How to Estimate Your Social Security COLA Increase From Your Benefit Statement

To estimate a Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), multiply your gross monthly benefit by the COLA rate written as a decimal. For 2026, the rate is 2.8%, or 0.028. Add that estimated increase to your old gross benefit. The result is an estimate—not your final deposit—because your personalized Social Security COLA notice lists the exact new amount and deductions.

The basic COLA calculation

Use this two-part formula:

  1. Estimated gross increase = old gross monthly benefit × COLA decimal.
  2. Estimated new gross benefit = old gross monthly benefit + estimated gross increase.

For the 2026 adjustment, substitute 0.028 for the COLA decimal. The multiplication estimates the increase before deductions. It does not calculate the amount that will reach your bank account.

Calculation item What to use
Starting amount Your monthly gross benefit for the benefit year you are estimating
COLA rate The Social Security Administration’s rate for that specific year; 2026 is 2.8%
Estimated increase Starting gross benefit multiplied by the rate as a decimal
Estimated new gross benefit Starting gross benefit plus the estimated increase
Final payable amount The individualized amount and deductions shown in your SSA COLA notice

First, identify which figure on your statement you are using

“Benefit statement” can mean two different documents. Choosing the wrong figure is the most common source of a misleading estimate.

A current monthly benefit

If you already receive retirement, survivor or disability benefits, start with the monthly gross benefit for the period immediately before the COLA. Gross means the amount before deductions. A bank deposit or other net payment may be lower, so do not use the deposit amount unless you are deliberately estimating the net amount and have accounted for every deduction separately.

Look for a monthly figure rather than an annual total. If your record shows more than one benefit, identify the specific retirement, survivor or disability benefit you are checking. Write the amount down exactly, including cents if they appear. Keeping the original amount visible makes it easier to explain any difference between your estimate and the later notice.

A future benefit estimate

A Social Security Statement generally provides your earnings history and personalized estimates of future retirement benefits. That estimate is not the same as a current beneficiary’s final post-COLA payment. If you are planning for retirement and have not started benefits, you can apply the published COLA rate to the estimate as a scenario, but label it as a projection. The statement does not replace the notice SSA sends after your benefit is actually adjusted.

A future estimate is useful for “what if” budgeting: you can see how a stated monthly amount would change if a particular rate were applied. It does not establish what your eventual check will be. Your claiming decision, benefit record and the COLA rate announced for the applicable year all matter. Keep the projected number separate from an amount you are already entitled to receive.

Match the benefit year

Write down the year attached to the amount you are using. A rate announced for one year should not be reused as if it were permanent. When estimating a later COLA, obtain the rate announced for that benefit year and convert that rate to a decimal before multiplying.

When comparing documents, record both the year of the benefit and the payment date. A notice for 2026 should not be compared with an older statement without identifying which number is the starting point. If a statement contains several claiming-age scenarios, select one scenario and one year; mixing figures from different rows creates a calculation that does not correspond to any actual estimate.

What the 2026 COLA is and when it applies

The Social Security Administration announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026. SSA based the announcement on the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025.

The increase applies to Social Security benefits payable in January 2026. Increased Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments began on December 31, 2025. Those dates are different because SSI follows its own payment schedule.

SSA said average retirement benefits would rise by about $56 per month beginning in January 2026. That is an average across beneficiaries, not a personal estimate. Your increase depends on your own gross benefit and the deductions listed in your notice. SSA said the 2026 adjustment affects about 75 million people receiving benefits.

The average-dollar figure and the percentage answer different questions. The 2.8% rate can be applied to your own gross amount. The roughly $56 average simply summarizes the experience of an average retirement beneficiary; it is not a minimum, maximum or promised increase for every recipient.

Step-by-step: estimate your gross increase

1. Write down the old gross monthly amount

Use the monthly amount for the benefit and year you are trying to estimate. If a statement shows several scenarios—such as different claiming ages—select the one that matches your question. If you are already receiving benefits, use the gross amount shown for the month before the adjustment.

Do not begin with the amount that arrived in your checking account unless your goal is a separate, carefully itemized net-payment exercise. The gross amount is the clean starting point because the COLA rate is applied to the benefit amount before the deductions listed on your record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Get the applicable SSA COLA rate

Use the rate published for that benefit year. For 2026, the rate is 2.8%. Do not substitute the average-dollar increase reported by SSA; the $56 figure describes an average retirement-benefit change and is not a rate.

For another year, find that year’s announcement from SSA instead of carrying 2.8% forward. A COLA is not a permanent annual multiplier. The percentage can change, and SSA may announce no increase if the required index comparison does not show an increase.

3. Convert the percentage to a decimal

Move the decimal point two places to the left: 2.8% becomes 0.028. A percentage must be in decimal form for the multiplication. Writing the conversion on paper helps prevent a common error: multiplying by 2.8 instead of 0.028 would make the result one hundred times too large.

4. Multiply the gross benefit by the decimal

Multiply your old gross monthly amount by 0.028. The result is the estimated gross dollar increase for 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a $1,500 gross benefit would produce $1,500 × 0.028 = $42. A $2,000 gross benefit would produce $2,000 × 0.028 = $56. These are illustrations of the formula, not statements about any particular person’s record.

5. Add the increase to the old gross benefit

Add the result from step 4 to the starting gross amount. This gives an estimated new gross monthly benefit before deductions. In the examples above, $1,500 becomes an estimated $1,542 gross benefit, and $2,000 becomes an estimated $2,056 gross benefit.

6. Check the personalized notice

Use the estimate as a reasonableness check, not as a replacement for SSA’s calculation. SSA’s one-page COLA notice provides your exact new benefit amount and the deductions used to arrive at the payable amount.

If your arithmetic and the notice differ, first check that you used the same starting amount, benefit year and gross-versus-net basis. The notice is the controlling source for the individualized figure. Keep it with the statement you used so you can reconstruct the comparison later.

Worked 2026 example

Suppose the relevant gross monthly benefit is $1,000. This is an illustrative calculation, not an SSA quote or a promise about any individual payment.

  1. Convert 2.8% to 0.028.
  2. Calculate the estimated increase: $1,000 × 0.028 = $28.
  3. Calculate the estimated new gross amount: $1,000 + $28 = $1,028.

The estimate is therefore a $28 gross increase and a $1,028 estimated gross benefit before deductions. Your notice may show a different payable amount because it identifies your personal deductions and the exact amount SSA uses.

Why your deposit may not rise by the calculated amount

The formula estimates gross benefits only. The amount deposited can differ when deductions change or when the amount you started with was already a net figure. Rather than trying to infer the final deposit from arithmetic, read the deduction section of the personalized COLA notice.

  • Gross versus net: Multiplying a bank deposit by 2.8% does not produce the gross COLA calculation. Start with the gross benefit.
  • Personal deductions: SSA’s notice lists the deductions that apply to your record. Those deductions determine the payable amount after the COLA.
  • Different documents: A future estimate on a Social Security Statement is planning information; a COLA notice is the direct source for a current beneficiary’s new amount.
  • Different payment dates: Social Security and SSI do not begin the 2026 increase on the same calendar date.

A deduction can stay the same, change, begin or end independently of the COLA. That means comparing only two bank deposits cannot tell you how much of the change came from the COLA. Compare the gross benefit and the listed deductions first, then use the payable amount and payment date to reconcile the deposit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How SSA determines the percentage

SSA uses the percentage increase in CPI-W between the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA was determined and the third quarter of the current year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) determines CPI-W, and SSA identifies it as the measure required by law for the COLA calculation.

The comparison is a rule, not a personal inflation index. It applies to the program nationally, while your dollar increase depends on your own benefit amount. SSA’s guidance states that if CPI-W does not increase over the relevant comparison, there can be no COLA.

For 2026, the relevant comparison ran from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. The rate was announced in 2025 and then applied to benefits payable in January 2026. Knowing the comparison period explains why a rate cannot be calculated from one month’s prices or from your household’s individual expenses.

Use your my Social Security account to verify the numbers

SSA’s free my Social Security service gives you access to your Social Security Statement, earnings history and personalized future benefit estimates. Beneficiaries can also view COLA notices online. Use the account to locate the document and amount that match your calculation, then compare your arithmetic with the notice rather than treating the statement’s projection as a final payment promise.

  1. Sign in to your my Social Security account.
  2. Open the Social Security Statement when you need earnings history or a future retirement estimate.
  3. Open the COLA notice when you need the current post-adjustment amount and deductions.
  4. Confirm that the benefit year and the gross-versus-net basis match the number you used in your calculation.
  5. Save or print the notice if you need a record for budgeting or to explain a difference with a household member.

No paid calculator or service is required for the basic estimate; the only inputs are the correct gross amount and the SSA-published rate. Using the official account also reduces the risk of relying on an outdated percentage or an unofficial estimate.

A simple worksheet you can complete in one minute

Write the following four lines before reaching for a calculator:

  1. Old gross monthly benefit: $_____
  2. Applicable COLA: _____% = _____ as a decimal
  3. Estimated gross increase: old gross × decimal = $_____
  4. Estimated new gross benefit: old gross + increase = $_____

Then add a fifth line from the notice: exact payable amount after deductions: $_____. Keeping the estimate and the notice amount on separate lines makes clear which number is a calculation and which number is individualized by SSA.

Troubleshoot a result that does not match your notice

You used the deposit amount

Recalculate with the gross monthly benefit shown on your SSA records. A deposit is the result after deductions, while the COLA percentage is applied to the benefit amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You used the wrong year’s rate

Check the year printed on the notice or statement and obtain the SSA rate for that year. The 2.8% figure applies to 2026; it is not a lifetime adjustment factor.

You compared a statement estimate with a current notice

Separate planning from payment verification. A future estimate can help you model a scenario, but the current COLA notice controls the amount for an existing beneficiary.

You expected the average increase

The approximately $56 monthly increase reported by SSA is an average retirement-benefit change. It is not a guaranteed increase and should not be substituted for your own gross-benefit calculation.

You checked an SSI payment on the wrong date

For 2026, increased SSI payments began December 31, 2025, while Social Security benefits payable in January 2026 received the increase in January. Check the program and payment date before deciding that an amount is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You rounded too early

Use the full monthly figure shown on your record through the multiplication, then compare your result with the notice. If you round a starting amount before calculating, a small difference can appear. The notice remains the authoritative individualized amount.

You treated a projection as an entitlement

A Statement estimate is designed to show personalized future benefit estimates based on your earnings record. It is not a promise that a future check will equal the number produced by applying today’s COLA. Label any calculation based on a future estimate as a scenario and update it when SSA announces the applicable rate.

A practical comparison checklist

When comparing an old statement, a new notice and a bank deposit, record these facts beside each amount:

  • The benefit program, such as Social Security or SSI.
  • The benefit year and payment date.
  • The monthly amount before deductions.
  • The COLA rate used in the estimate.
  • Whether the figure is gross, payable after deductions, or a bank deposit.
  • The exact amount and deductions printed on the personalized notice.

This prevents an apples-to-oranges comparison, such as matching a gross estimate to a net deposit or comparing a future retirement projection with a current benefit. It also creates a useful record if you review household income, prepare a budget or need to ask SSA about a discrepancy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What your estimate can—and cannot—tell you

The calculation can tell you the approximate size of the 2026 gross adjustment from a stated monthly benefit. It is useful for checking whether a notice appears broadly consistent with the announced rate and for building a preliminary household budget.

It cannot determine your final net payment without the personal information in SSA’s records. It also cannot predict a future year’s rate. Each year’s percentage is determined from the specified CPI-W comparison and announced by SSA; a prior rate should not be carried forward automatically.

The estimate also cannot explain every difference between two deposits without the deduction details. If the gross amount looks right but the payable amount does not, review the notice’s deductions and the payment date rather than changing the COLA formula.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Social Security COLA increase?

Take your old gross monthly benefit, convert the applicable SSA percentage to a decimal, and multiply. For 2026, multiply by 0.028. Add the result to the old gross amount to estimate the new gross benefit, then use your personalized COLA notice for the exact payable amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much will a $1,000 Social Security benefit increase in 2026?

At 2.8%, the estimated gross increase is $28: $1,000 × 0.028 = $28. The estimated gross benefit is $1,028 before deductions. The actual deposit can differ.

Is the 2026 COLA 2.8% for everyone?

The 2.8% rate is the announced 2026 Social Security COLA. The dollar increase is not the same for everyone because it is calculated from each person’s gross benefit. Deductions can also make payable amounts differ.

Why did SSA say the average increase was about $56?

SSA reported an average monthly retirement-benefit increase of about $56. That figure summarizes an average beneficiary’s change; it is not a fixed payment for every recipient and should not replace multiplying your own gross benefit by 0.028.

When did the 2026 increase start?

The increase applied to Social Security benefits payable in January 2026. Increased SSI payments began December 31, 2025, so the program and payment schedule matter when you check a deposit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I apply 2.8% to my future retirement estimate?

Yes, as a clearly labeled planning scenario. A Social Security Statement provides future estimates, while a COLA notice provides the exact amount for a current beneficiary. Do not treat a scenario as a guaranteed future payment.

Do I need a paid COLA calculator?

No. The basic estimate requires only the correct gross monthly amount and the official SSA rate. The free my Social Security service provides statements, earnings information, future estimates and, for beneficiaries, online COLA notices.

What should I do if my calculation and notice disagree?

Check the starting amount, benefit year, applicable rate, gross-versus-net basis and payment date. Then review the deductions on the personalized notice. SSA’s notice supplies the exact individualized benefit and deductions; your arithmetic is only a reasonableness check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for estimating a Social Security COLA?

Multiply the old gross monthly benefit by the COLA percentage written as a decimal. Add that estimated increase to the old gross amount. For 2026, use 0.028.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use my gross benefit or my bank deposit?

Use the gross benefit before deductions. A bank deposit is a net amount and may not rise by the same dollar amount.

What was the 2026 Social Security COLA?

The Social Security Administration announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026.

When did the 2026 COLA take effect?

It applied to Social Security benefits payable in January 2026. Increased SSI payments began December 31, 2025.

Where can I find my exact new benefit amount?

Check your personalized SSA COLA notice, available through your my Social Security account or delivered by SSA. It lists the exact amount and deductions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is SSA’s approximately $56 average increase my guaranteed increase?

No. About $56 was SSA’s reported average retirement-benefit increase. Your dollar increase depends on your own gross benefit.

Can a Social Security Statement give me my final post-COLA payment?

No. The Statement provides earnings history and future estimates. For a current beneficiary’s exact post-COLA amount, use the personalized COLA notice.

What if there is no COLA in a future year?

SSA says that if CPI-W does not increase over the required comparison period, there can be no COLA.

The Bottom Line

For 2026, multiply your old gross monthly Social Security benefit by 0.028, add the result to the old gross amount, and treat that figure as an estimate. Use the benefit year that matches your question, distinguish a future Statement estimate from a current benefit, and verify the exact payable amount and deductions in your personalized SSA COLA notice.
