Use the Social Security Administration’s personalized my Social Security Retirement Estimate, add the expected covered earnings for the extra year, and compare the result with the same benefit-start age. That is the only practical way to estimate your personal dollar change because SSA uses your own indexed earnings record, birth and eligibility information, and claiming age.
One additional year helps most when it fills a year with no earnings or replaces one of your 35 lowest indexed earnings years. If you already have 35 higher indexed years, the new year may not change the earnings portion of your benefit at all. Separately, starting benefits later can increase the monthly amount even when the extra work year does not enter the 35-year calculation.

Keep the planned benefit-start age identical in both estimates. That isolates the effect of the additional earnings year. If you also want to evaluate claiming at a different age, make a separate comparison after you have measured the work-year effect.
Information to gather before changing the estimate
- Your complete SSA earnings record, including the latest posted year.
- Your expected covered wages or net earnings from self-employment for the additional year.
- The age at which you intend to start retirement benefits.
- Whether any of your employment is not covered by Social Security.
- Your birth year and the year you first become eligible for retirement benefits.
SSA’s estimate is personalized to the earnings record it has on file. Pensions, savings, investment income, and other non-work income are not substitutes for covered earnings in the future-income field.
Why one more year can help—or produce no increase
SSA bases a standard retired-worker benefit on the highest 35 years of indexed earnings and the age you start receiving benefits. The additional year is not valued as a simple percentage of that year’s paycheck. It matters only if, after wage indexing, it is included among the 35 earnings years used in the computation.
If you have fewer than 35 years of earnings
SSA includes years with no earnings as zeros when there are fewer than 35 years of covered earnings. An additional covered year can therefore replace one zero. A positive indexed earnings year generally raises the average used in the benefit formula, although the size of the change still depends on the earnings amount and the formula that applies to your eligibility year.
If you already have 35 or more years
SSA selects the 35 highest indexed earnings years. Your new year must be higher, after indexing, than at least one year currently in that top group to affect the average. If it is lower than all 35 selected years, it is left out and the earnings portion of the benefit does not increase from that year.

Do not compare the new paycheck with an old nominal paycheck. SSA wage-indexes past earnings before selecting the highest years. A lower historical dollar amount can represent a higher indexed year than its original figure suggests.
Why the extra year is not an automatic raise
Three separate decisions are often confused:
- Working another year: adds a potential earnings year to the record.
- Replacing a low year: changes the 35-year average only when the new indexed year displaces a lower selected year.
- Delaying the start of benefits: changes the monthly amount under SSA’s claiming-age rules, independent of whether the new earnings year enters the top 35.
Working longer can also affect cash flow, taxes, health coverage, and the number of months you collect benefits. Those household decisions are outside the Social Security calculation itself.
How SSA turns earnings into a benefit
Understanding the calculation explains why the personalized estimator is more useful than a rule of thumb.
1. Wage indexing and the 35-year selection
SSA adjusts earlier covered earnings to reflect changes in national wage levels. It then selects the highest 35 indexed years for the standard retired-worker computation. For a full 35-year record, that period contains 420 months (35 years multiplied by 12). When fewer than 35 earnings years are available, zero-earnings years fill the missing months.
2. Average indexed monthly earnings (AIME)
SSA totals the selected indexed earnings and divides the result by the months in the computation period. With 35 years, the denominator is 420 months. The resulting average indexed monthly earnings, or AIME, is the earnings measure that enters the benefit formula.

An extra year that replaces a low selected year increases AIME by the difference between those two indexed years spread across the 420-month period. If it replaces a zero, the entire indexed amount is an addition to the total before the division. This explains why the same extra salary can have a different effect for two workers with different records.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. The primary insurance amount (PIA)
SSA applies a progressive formula to AIME. The bend points and percentages depend on the year you first become eligible. For a worker first eligible in 2026, SSA’s example uses bend points of $1,286 and $7,749. Those figures are year-specific formula inputs, not universal values for every worker or every future year.
The resulting primary insurance amount is then subject to applicable cost-of-living adjustments and to the rules for the age at which benefits begin. A calculator performs these steps using your eligibility year and record; manually multiplying an extra paycheck by a fixed percentage will not reproduce the result.
Run the comparison in the right order
- Record the baseline. In my Social Security, note the estimate at your intended claiming age before adding the extra year. Save the assumed future earnings if the account displays them.
- Enter the additional covered earnings. Adjust expected future income to include the annual covered earnings you expect for the extra work year. Use the amount SSA treats as earnings, not a pension, investment return, or other income.
- Keep the claim age unchanged. Generate the second estimate at the same benefit-start age as the baseline.
- Calculate the difference. Subtract the baseline monthly estimate from the revised monthly estimate. Treat the result as an estimate based on current assumptions, not a promised payment.
- Test claiming ages separately. If you are deciding both whether to work and when to claim, create a grid of claim ages for each work assumption. Do not attribute the entire difference between two cells to the extra work year when the claim ages differ.
- Save the assumptions and date. SSA estimates can change when your earnings record is updated, wage-indexing factors change, cost-of-living adjustments are applied, or the calculator is revised.
Check the 2026 covered-earnings limit
For 2026, SSA says covered earnings above $184,500 do not increase the earnings amount used for Social Security taxes and benefits. This limit changes over time, so use the limit for the year you are modeling rather than carrying the 2026 figure into a later year.
If your expected covered earnings are above the limit, enter the amount appropriate to SSA’s estimator and recognize that earnings beyond the annual maximum will not raise the benefit calculation for that year. The limit applies to covered work earnings; it does not turn pensions or investments into covered earnings.

| Detailed Calculator | Depends on the data you enter | Detailed earnings and eligibility assumptions | Complex or downloadable scenario analysis | SSA listed version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026; later updates can change results |
For an individual deciding whether one additional work year changes a retirement benefit, start with my Social Security. The other calculators are useful for checking a result or modeling a record that is not conveniently available in the account, but they require more manual assumptions.
How to use the Online or Detailed Calculator when you cannot use your account
Online Calculator workflow
- Collect the covered earnings shown on your SSA record, organized by year.
- Enter the requested birth, eligibility, and earnings information.
- Add the expected earnings for the additional work year.
- Run one estimate with the additional year and a second estimate without it.
- Use the same claimed-benefit age in both runs and compare the monthly results.
Because you are entering the record yourself, a missing year, a typo, or an incorrect covered-earnings amount can materially alter the result.
Detailed Calculator workflow
SSA identified version 2026.2 as released July 13, 2026, with assumptions updated using the 2026 Trustees Report. Download the current version listed by SSA rather than relying on an old copy. Enter the historical earnings record, projected future earnings, and intended start age. Create a baseline file and a second file containing the extra year so you can audit which assumption changed.
The Detailed Calculator is useful when you need to model several future earnings patterns, but it is not a guarantee of the eventual award. SSA may later revise a posted earnings year, indexing factors, cost-of-living adjustments, or calculator assumptions.

Examples of how the result differs by earnings record
| Record before the extra year | What the new year does | Likely effect on the earnings calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 35 covered earnings years | Fills one or more zero-earnings years | Usually raises the selected earnings total, with the amount determined by the indexed earnings and eligibility-year formula |
| Exactly 35 years, including a low indexed year | Replaces that lower selected year | Raises AIME by the indexed difference divided across the computation period |
| More than 35 years with 35 higher indexed years already selected | Falls below every selected year | May be excluded, producing no increase from the earnings year |
| High earnings subject to the 2026 maximum | Earnings above $184,500 in 2026 | Amounts over the annual covered-earnings limit do not increase the benefit calculation |
These are calculation patterns, not dollar promises. Two people earning the same amount in the extra year can see different results because their lowest selected year, indexing history, eligibility year, and claiming age differ.

Keep the claiming-age question separate
SSA explicitly describes the retirement benefit as depending on both the highest 35 years of earnings and the age you start receiving benefits. A clean analysis therefore uses two sets of scenarios:
- Work-year comparison: same claiming age, with and without the additional earnings year.
- Claiming-age comparison: same earnings assumptions, with benefits beginning at different ages.
If you work one more year and also delay claiming, the larger estimate reflects both changes. It is not possible to assign the full increase to the additional earnings year without holding the start age constant.
Whether delaying is financially preferable depends on factors the SSA estimator does not resolve for you, including longevity, taxes, other household income, employment conditions, health coverage, and cash-flow needs. The calculator supplies benefit amounts; it does not make a household claiming recommendation.
What can make an estimate change later
- Earnings-record updates: an employer report or self-employment record may post after you run the estimate.
- Wage indexing: SSA uses indexing factors that can change for future or newly posted years.
- Cost-of-living adjustments: applicable COLAs alter benefit amounts after the initial computation.
- Calculator revisions: SSA can update assumptions, formulas, or software versions.
- Changing future earnings: part-time work, unemployment, bonuses, or a different final work year can change the scenario.
- Covered-status differences: employment not covered by Social Security does not enter the covered-earnings record in the same way.
For these reasons, label every saved result with the date, calculator version when applicable, projected earnings, and claiming age.
Troubleshoot an unexpected result
The estimate did not increase
- Check whether the extra year is below all 35 selected indexed years.
- Confirm that the new income was entered as covered earnings.
- Verify that the 2026 annual maximum was applied correctly if the scenario is for 2026.
- Make sure you compared the same benefit-start age in both estimates.
- Check whether the account has received the latest earnings report.
The increase seems unusually large
- Look for zero-earnings years that the additional year may be replacing.
- Review the earnings history for a missing or mistyped year in the baseline.
- Confirm that the comparison did not accidentally change the claiming age.
- Re-run the scenario with the current SSA calculator version.
Your record is incomplete or wrong
Do not treat an estimate based on an incorrect record as a planning figure. Identify the affected year, gather wage statements or self-employment documentation, and follow SSA’s instructions for correcting an earnings record. Recalculate after the correction is reflected.
A practical checklist before relying on the number
- Confirm that the question is about U.S. Social Security retirement benefits.
- Review every year of the SSA earnings record.
- Identify whether you have fewer than 35 earnings years or a low year that the new year might replace.
- Use covered earnings, not pensions, investments, or other income, for the added-year scenario.
- Apply the annual covered-earnings limit for the modeled year; for 2026, it is $184,500.
- Run baseline and added-year estimates at the same claiming age.
- Run separate claiming-age scenarios if that is part of your decision.
- Record the date, projected earnings, claiming age, and calculator version.
- Recheck the estimate when SSA posts new earnings or updates its assumptions.
- Use the result as an informed estimate, not a guaranteed benefit or a complete retirement plan.
What you can and cannot infer from one extra year
You can determine whether the year appears to enter your top 35 and measure the change shown by SSA under a defined set of assumptions. You cannot infer a universal dollar increase from the extra paycheck alone. The outcome depends on your entire earnings record, wage indexing, your first-eligibility year, covered status, the annual earnings limit, cost-of-living adjustments, and the age benefits begin.
The most defensible answer to “Will working one more year increase my Social Security?” is therefore conditional: it is most likely when the year fills a zero or replaces a lower indexed year, but it may not increase the earnings calculation once 35 higher indexed years are already in place. Use the personalized estimate to quantify your own record, and keep the work-year and claiming-age effects analytically separate.
