How to Estimate Your Retirement Income Beyond Social Security

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

To estimate retirement income beyond Social Security, build a source-by-source schedule: verify your Social Security record and claiming age, obtain pension or annuity quotes from the plan or provider, convert account balances into an explicit withdrawal scenario, align every figure to the same dollar year and time period, then subtract estimated taxes and deductions. The result is a planning range, not a guarantee, until you compare it with your household spending target and test alternative assumptions.

What a retirement-income estimate should include

A complete estimate separates money that is contractual or guaranteed from money that depends on investment returns and withdrawals. It also distinguishes gross receipts from what you can actually spend.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Social Security: a personalized benefit based on your covered earnings record and the age you claim.
  • Pensions: benefits quoted by the employer plan, including payment form and survivor terms.
  • Annuities: contractual payments shown in the policy or provider illustration.
  • Retirement accounts: withdrawals from traditional, Roth, and workplace accounts under a stated schedule.
  • Other income: sources such as part-time work, rental income, interest, or dividends, modeled separately from Social Security earnings.
  • Taxes and deductions: an after-tax estimate that reflects the source and your circumstances.

Your estimate is only as useful as its assumptions. Record the amount, start date, inflation convention, payment variability, survivor protection, and tax treatment for every source.

Why the Social Security estimate is not your retirement-income estimate

My Social Security provides a personalized benefit estimate from your earnings record and selected claiming age. It does not add pensions, annuities, investment interest, dividends, or withdrawals. The Social Security Administration states that those amounts are not earnings used to calculate your Social Security benefit (Social Security Administration, “Your Retirement Benefit: How It Is Calculated”).

Social Security says, “We base your retirement benefit on your highest 35 years of earnings and the age you start receiving benefits.” If you have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, years without earnings can enter the calculation as zeros. Continuing to work can replace a lower year with a higher one, but only if the new earnings are high enough to change the top 35.

Check the earnings record before using the estimate

  1. Sign in to your my Social Security account and open your Statement.
  2. Review each year’s reported earnings and compare them with your tax records, pay statements, or employer records.
  3. Report an error to the Social Security Administration using its correction process before relying on the projection.
  4. Save the Statement date and the assumptions used for future updates.

The Social Security Administration encourages workers to review the Statement annually. A missing year or incorrect wage can affect the benefit calculation, so treat the record check as a required step rather than an optional detail.

Model more than one claiming age

Retirement benefits can begin as early as age 62, but starting before full retirement age produces a reduced monthly amount. Full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later; it differs for earlier birth years. Claiming at 70 generally produces a higher monthly benefit than claiming at full retirement age. Stopping work and claiming benefits are separate decisions: you can stop working and delay benefits, or continue working while claiming, subject to the rules that apply to your situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For perspective, the Social Security Administration lists these 2026 illustrative maximum monthly retirement benefits for a hypothetical worker who earned the taxable maximum beginning at age 22:

Claiming age Illustrative 2026 maximum monthly benefit
62 $2,969
Full retirement age $4,152
70 $5,181

These are not typical benefits and are not a planning assumption. The agency explicitly notes that no single maximum applies to everyone. Your Statement and calculator output are the relevant figures for your record.

Set one time and dollar basis before adding sources

Choose either monthly or annual amounts and use that unit throughout the worksheet. Then label every figure as either today’s dollars or future inflated dollars. Social Security’s online calculators let you choose between those conventions. Do not add a pension quoted in future dollars to an account withdrawal stated in today’s dollars without adjusting one of them.

A practical worksheet has these fields for each source:

  • Gross amount per month and per year.
  • First payment date and the age at that date.
  • Today’s-dollar or future-dollar convention.
  • Fixed, inflation-adjusted, or variable payment description.
  • Survivor benefit or beneficiary terms.
  • Expected tax treatment and withholding assumptions.

When a provider gives only an annual amount, divide by 12 for a monthly comparison; do not treat a 13th payment, bonus, or irregular distribution as a recurring monthly benefit.

Get pension and annuity numbers from the source

Defined-benefit pensions

Ask the plan administrator for a current benefit estimate at each relevant commencement date. Request the available payment forms, cost-of-living provisions, survivor elections, and any early-retirement reduction. A defined-benefit plan normally pays an annuity over your life or over the joint lives of you and a spouse, unless you elect another form allowed by the plan. The plan document and your election control the actual amount; a generic pension formula cannot replace the plan’s quote.

Record the quoted amount and the date it was prepared. A quote for starting at 65 cannot be treated as the amount payable at 62 or 70 unless the plan provides that comparison.

Defined-contribution plans

A 401(k), profit-sharing plan, or similar defined-contribution arrangement generally pays a lump sum or installments rather than a predetermined lifetime pension. The account balance is an asset, not an annual-income figure. Obtain the current balance, investment options, fees, and distribution rules, then model withdrawals separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Purchased or employer annuities

Use the contract or provider illustration for an annuity’s payment amount and start date. Capture whether payments are single-life or joint-life, whether a period-certain or refund feature applies, and whether payments increase. Annuity payments are contractual regular payments, but their tax treatment can contain taxable and tax-free portions depending on your basis and circumstances (Internal Revenue Service, “Publication 575, Pension and Annuity Income”). The fact that an annuity can provide income does not by itself make purchasing one appropriate.

Convert retirement-account balances into a withdrawal scenario

List each account separately by type and owner: traditional IRA, Roth IRA, 401(k), 403(b), governmental plan, or taxable investment account. For each, show the balance and a proposed withdrawal schedule. Never report the balance alone as though it were annual income.

Use a stated withdrawal amount or schedule

For example, your worksheet might show a $600,000 traditional account with a planned first-year withdrawal of $24,000, increasing by a stated percentage, or a variable amount tied to an annual review. The number is a scenario to test, not a guarantee that the balance will last. A sustainable amount depends on investment returns, inflation, fees, longevity, market losses, taxes, and the timing of withdrawals.

Understand required minimum distributions

Required minimum distributions (RMDs) are tax rules that set a minimum withdrawal for many traditional IRAs and workplace retirement accounts. They generally begin at age 73, subject to account-specific exceptions and current rules. An RMD is not a recommended spending rate, a safe withdrawal rate, or proof that the distribution is affordable. It is a minimum distribution requirement under federal tax law (Internal Revenue Service, “Retirement Plan and IRA Required Minimum Distributions FAQs”).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Show RMDs in the schedule when they apply, but keep them distinct from the amount you choose to spend. A distribution can exceed your spending need and be reinvested, or it can be less than your planned withdrawal if you are taking additional money voluntarily.

Build the source table

After collecting records, put every source into one table before calculating a total. This prevents a guaranteed pension from being blended invisibly with a speculative investment withdrawal.

Source Gross amount Start date Payment behavior Survivor terms Dollar basis
Social Security Personalized Statement estimate Selected claiming age Benefit subject to program rules and applicable adjustments Use the survivor rules that apply to your record Today’s or future dollars, as selected in the calculator
Defined-benefit pension Plan administrator quote Plan commencement date Annuity under the elected form Election specified by the plan As stated in the plan quote
Defined-contribution withdrawal Amount in your scenario Date withdrawals begin Variable and dependent on balance and schedule Beneficiary and remaining-balance rules apply Convert to the worksheet convention
Annuity contract Provider illustration Contract payment date Contractual payments under policy terms Joint-life, period-certain, or other contract feature As stated in the illustration

Sum the amounts only after converting them to the same period and dollar basis. Keep a second total for amounts that are contractual or otherwise relatively predictable, and a separate total for investment-dependent withdrawals.

Estimate taxes and arrive at spendable income

Gross income is not the same as spendable income. Pension and annuity payments may be partly taxable, and withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts are generally included in taxable income except for amounts already taxed or qualifying tax-free distributions. Roth distributions, basis in an annuity, and taxable-account withdrawals can follow different rules. The Internal Revenue Service explains that the taxable portion depends on the account, basis, and distribution circumstances.

Social Security benefits may also be taxable depending on your combined income and filing circumstances. Use current Internal Revenue Service guidance and instructions for the tax year being modeled; do not apply a permanent percentage to every source.

Make two views in your worksheet

  1. Gross view: total the scheduled receipts before withholding.
  2. Tax estimate: apply your filing status, other income, deductions, credits, account basis, and state-tax assumptions as appropriate.
  3. Spendable view: subtract estimated federal and state taxes, health-insurance premiums, Medicare premiums, and other automatic deductions.

Label the assumptions and tax year. A rough estimate can show whether a gap exists, but a tax professional or current tax software may be necessary when you have multiple account types, a pension lump sum, an annuity exclusion ratio, or substantial investment income.

Compare income with a household spending target

No official calculator supplies a universal retirement-income target. Build yours from actual or planned expenses:

  • Housing costs, property taxes, insurance, utilities, and maintenance.
  • Health insurance, Medicare premiums, supplemental coverage, prescriptions, and out-of-pocket care.
  • Debt payments and the date each debt ends.
  • Food, transportation, personal spending, and recurring subscriptions.
  • Travel, gifts, taxes, and irregular costs such as home repairs or vehicle replacement.
  • Long-term-care reserves and an emergency cash reserve.

Separate essential spending from discretionary spending. Compare the after-tax income view with essential costs first, then test whether discretionary spending remains affordable under less favorable investment or longevity assumptions. The amount a particular household needs cannot be calculated without its budget, location, tax details, balances, plan statements, and timing preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run scenarios instead of relying on one number

At minimum, create a side-by-side comparison of:

  • Social Security starting at 62, full retirement age, and 70 when those ages are available to you.
  • Stopping work at different dates while keeping the claiming date separate.
  • Each pension payment form offered by the plan, including survivor options.
  • At least two withdrawal schedules for retirement accounts.
  • Today’s-dollar and future-dollar presentations, with only like-for-like totals compared.

For every scenario, compare the monthly amount, first-payment date, inflation exposure, survivor protection, tax treatment, and flexibility. A higher monthly payment may require giving up a survivor benefit or accepting less liquidity. A larger account withdrawal may increase current spending but raise future tax bills or longevity risk. The point of the scenarios is to expose those trade-offs before you commit to an election.

Common estimation mistakes and fixes

Adding incompatible dollar years

Mistake: combining today’s-dollar Social Security with a future-dollar pension quote. Fix: convert all figures to one convention and label it beside every total.

Treating the account balance as income

Mistake: dividing a balance by an arbitrary number of years and calling the result safe. Fix: show a withdrawal schedule, test different returns and lifespans, and identify the schedule as a scenario.

Calling an RMD a spending recommendation

Mistake: assuming the required minimum is the amount you should spend. Fix: list the RMD separately from voluntary withdrawals and your spending plan.

Assuming every pension has the same survivor option

Mistake: promising a spouse a particular continuation percentage without checking the plan. Fix: obtain the plan’s election forms and quote each available option.

Using gross receipts as the budget

Mistake: comparing pre-tax income with after-tax expenses. Fix: create a tax and deductions view before deciding whether income covers spending.

Confusing work and benefit dates

Mistake: assuming the date you stop working must equal the date Social Security starts. Fix: model the two decisions independently.
