Use measured wall-clock time and total infrastructure charges—not the advertised GPU-hour rate—to estimate your bill. Start by specifying the model, precision, batch size, data volume, quality target and deadline. Select a GPU with enough VRAM and suitable networking, measure the complete run from provisioning through teardown, multiply the billed hours by the correctly normalized instance or GPU rate, then add storage, CPU/RAM, orchestration, snapshots, support and network transfer. Convert the result to cost per training run, image, request or million tokens, and publish low, base and high cases. For example, four H100s running 18 hours at $3.99 per GPU-hour produce $287.28 of compute before ancillary charges.
Prices below are USD examples available in October 2026 and can change by region, capacity, billing mode and provider. Treat them as inputs to a model, not as a universal quote.

A useful estimate is an end-to-end cost for producing a defined amount of useful work. The GPU line is usually the largest item, but it is not the whole bill. A training job can also consume attached disks, object storage, CPU and system memory, orchestration, snapshots, support and network egress. Inference can add idle worker time, API or serverless duration, request overhead and data-transfer charges.
Write the estimate around one measurable unit:
- Training: cost per completed run, epoch or training step.
- Fine-tuning: cost per adapter or checkpoint that meets the target quality.
- Batch inference: cost per image, document, audio minute or million tokens.
- Online inference: cost per successful request or million output tokens, including time workers wait for traffic.
Do not compare a per-GPU price with a multi-GPU instance price until both are expressed in the same unit. A quoted eight-GPU instance is already the price for all eight GPUs; dividing that price by eight and then multiplying by eight again will overstate the bill.

How do I define the workload before pricing it?
Record the inputs that determine both memory needs and runtime. Without them, a rate multiplied by an assumed number of hours is only a guess.
Training and fine-tuning inputs
- Model architecture and parameter count.
- Precision or quantization format, such as FP32, FP16, BF16 or 8-bit.
- Number of examples or tokens, dataset storage location and number of epochs.
- Per-device batch size, gradient accumulation and sequence length (or image resolution).
- Target quality, validation schedule and maximum acceptable deadline.
- Checkpoint frequency, expected restart policy and whether the job can be interrupted.
Inference inputs
- Model and precision, including any quantization.
- Prompt and output lengths, image dimensions or other payload size.
- Requests per second, burst pattern and expected daily or monthly volume.
- Latency or availability target, including whether workers must remain warm.
- Batching strategy and maximum queueing delay.
These details let you test several GPU candidates instead of selecting the cheapest hourly number. A small GPU may be inexpensive but unable to hold the model, while a larger GPU can finish work quickly enough to reduce total cost.
How do I choose a rented GPU or instance?
Filter candidates by VRAM first, then by interconnect, expected throughput, region and provider capacity. Capture whether the quote is per physical GPU, a fractional GPU, or an entire instance with host CPU and memory.
VRAM and precision
Model weights, activations, optimizer states, framework overhead and batch data all compete for VRAM. A model that barely fits can run slowly or fail when sequence length or batch size rises. Leave headroom for the runtime, CUDA kernels, communication buffers and checkpoints rather than sizing to the exact weight-file size.
Interconnect and multi-GPU communication
Distributed training and model parallelism can be limited by PCIe or network bandwidth. Two inexpensive GPUs with slow communication may deliver less useful work per dollar than one faster GPU, even when their aggregate VRAM is larger. Record the interconnect and the number of GPUs attached to each instance.
Region and host resources
Choose a region close to the data and users when transfer or latency matters. Check the included vCPUs, system RAM, local disk, attached-disk options and network limits. Google Cloud states that disk, machine memory, networking and images are separate from its GPU price, so a GPU-only comparison is incomplete.

AWS documents a P5.4xlarge shape with one H100 80 GB and a P5.48xlarge shape with eight H100 GPUs. The specification page does not provide one universal on-demand rate; use the live EC2 price for your region and purchase option.
What is the correct runtime to bill?
Measure the entire billed interval, not only the time your training loop reports. Start the timer when the provider begins charging and stop it after the final artifact is safely written and the instance or worker is terminated.
- Provisioning: include capacity allocation, boot time and driver initialization.
- Image and environment setup: include container or virtual-machine image pulls, package installation and compilation.
- Data staging: include downloads from object storage, decompression and preprocessing.
- Useful computation: include forward and backward passes, optimizer steps and evaluation.
- Checkpointing and uploads: include pauses while writing local or remote checkpoints.
- Retries and recovery: include failed attempts when they consume billable capacity.
- Teardown: include final uploads, snapshot creation and the time before the resource is actually released.
Amazon Web Services documents that On-Demand Instances are billed by the second with no long-term commitment, subject to a 60-second minimum. A short job therefore still incurs at least one minute, and idle or setup seconds inside a running instance count.

How do I calculate GPU or instance cost?
Use the unit in the provider’s quote.
compute cost = instances × hours running × price per instance-hour
If the provider quotes each GPU separately, use:
compute cost = GPUs × hours running × price per GPU-hour
For a multi-GPU instance, do not apply both formulas. If an eight-GPU machine costs $X per instance-hour, the compute line for 10 hours is 10 × $X, not 8 × 10 × $X.
Normalize the rate before comparing vendors
- Convert minutes or seconds to hours only after confirming the minimum billable duration.
- Record whether the price is on-demand, spot, reserved or promotional.
- Record GPU memory, GPU model, region, host CPU/RAM and the number of GPUs included.
- Separate a dedicated pod or fixed instance from request-driven serverless billing.
- Use the same currency and tax treatment across candidates.
What do current rented-GPU prices look like?
The following published examples illustrate the spread in October 2026. They are not throughput benchmarks and are not interchangeable: some are fixed GPU rates, some are serverless worker rates and Google figures are spot examples with interruption risk.
| Provider and mode | GPU or shape | Published rate (USD) | Billing context |
|---|---|---|---|
| RunPod fixed GPU | H100 PCIe | $2.89 per hour | Page updated October 8, 2026; workload mode and availability affect price. |
| RunPod fixed GPU | H100 SXM | $3.99 per hour | Page updated October 8, 2026; SXM and PCIe are different hardware configurations. |
| RunPod fixed GPU | A100 80 GB | $1.79 per hour | Page updated October 8, 2026; verify the exact region and host resources. |
| RunPod fixed GPU | L4 | $0.59 per hour | Page updated October 8, 2026; suitability depends on model memory and throughput. |
| RunPod fixed GPU | RTX 4090 | $0.89 per hour | Page updated October 8, 2026; consumer hardware may have different host and availability terms. |
| RunPod Serverless | H100 worker | $4.79 per hour | Request-driven inference workers; billed around worker execution rather than a permanently occupied pod. |
| RunPod Serverless | A100 worker | $2.72 per hour | Request-driven inference workers. |
| RunPod Serverless | L4, A5000, 3090 or MIG 24 GB | $0.69 per hour | Request-driven inference workers. |
| Google Cloud Spot | H100, a3-highgpu-1g | $6.307365068 per hour | Variable spot price; capacity can be interrupted. |
| Google Cloud Spot | A100, a2-highgpu-1g | $2.12081 per hour | Variable spot price; capacity can be interrupted. |
| Google Cloud Spot | L4, g2-standard-4 | $0.402748 per hour | Variable spot price; capacity can be interrupted. |
These figures show why “cheapest GPU” is not a complete answer. A higher hourly rate can be cheaper per completed run if it shortens the job enough, while a low spot rate can become expensive when interruptions force restarts.
What non-GPU charges should I add?
Create a separate line for every resource that remains after the GPU is selected.
- Attached block storage: boot volumes, datasets, scratch space and checkpoint disks, usually charged by capacity and sometimes by operations.
- Object storage: stored datasets, model artifacts, checkpoints, requests and retrieval charges.
- CPU and RAM: preprocessing, tokenization, data loaders, web servers and orchestration nodes.
- Snapshots and images: retained machine images or volume snapshots.
- Orchestration and serverless control plane: queues, API gateways, schedulers and monitoring.
- Support: paid support plans or managed-service fees.
- Network transfer: internet egress, cross-region traffic and traffic to users or another cloud.
Amazon Web Services lists an aggregated 100 GB per month of free internet egress, followed by tiered pricing beginning at $0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB per month. Same-region and cross-region paths have different treatment, so identify the exact source and destination before applying that number.
How do I calculate cost per training run?
Sum compute and every required add-on for one successful run, then include a clearly labeled allowance for expected setup and restart waste.

4 × 18 × $3.99 = $287.28 compute
Assume 200 GB-month of checkpoint storage, 80 GB of internet egress, CPU/RAM and other services. If those add-ons total $46, the subtotal is:
$287.28 + $46 = $333.28
State how contingency is treated. If the $46 already includes a 10% setup/restart allowance, the modeled total is $333.28. If $46 is only the direct add-on total and the 10% allowance is separate, the modeled total is $366.61 ($333.28 × 1.10). The arithmetic is illustrative, not a provider quote or a measured performance result; replace every assumption with the selected provider’s current line-item prices.
How should I compare on-demand, spot and commitment pricing?
Choose the purchase mode according to interruption tolerance, forecast confidence and the cost of lost progress—not the nominal discount alone.
| Purchase mode | Best fit | Main advantage | Main risk or cost | What to model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| On-demand | Unpredictable work, production deadlines and experiments that cannot restart easily | Capacity without a long-term commitment | Usually the highest flexible rate | Full runtime, minimum billable duration, setup and idle time |
| Spot or preemptible | Checkpointed training, batch jobs and fault-tolerant inference | Potentially lower variable price | Interruption, changing price and possible capacity unavailability | Interruption probability, checkpoint interval, restart time, lost work and alternate capacity |
| One- or three-year commitment | Stable, high utilization and predictable GPU demand | Lower effective rate when the commitment is fully used | Payment obligation when demand falls or hardware needs change | Utilization, cancellation or modification terms and the opportunity cost of unused capacity |
For spot, calculate an expected cost rather than multiplying the spot rate by ideal runtime. Add the expected restart hours and the probability of losing a run. The break-even point is the utilization or interruption rate at which the flexible option costs the same as the commitment or on-demand alternative.

Is the cheapest hourly GPU actually the cheapest?
Compare useful output per dollar. The relevant quantity is:
cost per unit = total cost ÷ successful output
For training, successful output may be one accepted model, one epoch or one million training tokens. For inference, use completed requests, images or tokens—not attempted requests that failed.
Throughput-adjusted comparison
Suppose GPU A costs $1 per hour and processes 100 images per hour, while GPU B costs $2 per hour and processes 300 images per hour. GPU A costs $0.01 per image; GPU B costs about $0.0067 per image before other charges. The faster GPU is cheaper for that workload even though its hourly rate is double. This example is a decision method, not a benchmark for any particular model.
Measure throughput with your model, precision, batch size, sequence or image length and serving configuration. Do not transfer a vendor’s benchmark to a different workload without testing the same conditions.

- Single GPU: simplest scheduling and usually the lowest coordination overhead; limited by model memory and one-device throughput.
- Data parallel: each GPU processes a shard, but gradient synchronization can leave devices waiting.
- Model or pipeline parallel: allows larger models, yet interconnect speed and pipeline bubbles affect utilization.
- Multi-GPU instance: may provide faster local links, but the provider may charge for the whole instance even when one device is underused.
Calculate scaling efficiency as the speedup divided by the number of GPUs. If four GPUs finish in one quarter of the single-GPU time, efficiency is 100 percent; if they finish in one half, efficiency is 50 percent. Apply the measured efficiency to total cost rather than assuming linear scaling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I use a fixed pod or request-driven serverless inference?
A fixed GPU is generally easier to control for steady traffic and long-lived state. Request-driven serverless workers can reduce payment for idle capacity when traffic is intermittent, but their worker rate, cold starts and duration rules must be modeled.
Fixed GPU or pod
- Pay while the machine is allocated, including idle periods.
- Warm model weights and predictable latency are easier to maintain.
- Best suited to sustained utilization, streaming workloads and strict latency targets.
Serverless endpoint
- Workers scale around incoming requests; the service is designed to run containerized inference behind an API.
- Model loading and cold-start time can increase per-request latency and billable duration.
- Best suited to bursty or low-duty-cycle traffic when the savings from avoiding idle workers exceed the higher execution rate.
Estimate both modes over the same month: requests, tokens per request, worker-seconds, cold starts, minimum duration, storage and egress. A lower serverless utilization does not automatically mean a lower bill if each request repeatedly pays startup overhead.

How do I convert an inference bill to cost per million tokens?
Measure successful input and output tokens separately, because the model may spend different time generating each. A practical formula is:
cost per 1M tokens = (GPU time + infrastructure charges) ÷ successful tokens × 1,000,000
Use the same denominator convention for every candidate: input tokens, output tokens or combined tokens. Include worker idle time for fixed servers, queue and cold-start duration for serverless, retries, failed requests and egress where those costs are material. If your service returns fewer tokens because of truncation or errors, count only the successful output represented by the billable unit you publish.
How do I build a low, base and high estimate?
A single number hides the assumptions most likely to change. Create a sensitivity table with at least these variables:
| Variable | Low case | Base case | High case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall-clock runtime | Measured best-case | Median measured run | Slow run including staging and evaluation |
| Utilization | High sustained use | Expected average | Idle and queueing included |
| Rate mode | Available spot or commitment | On-demand or expected mix | Fallback on-demand after interruption |
| GPU count | Smallest configuration that fits | Measured best throughput | Extra devices for deadline or redundancy |
| Failure and restart | No restart | Expected retry allowance | One or more full restarts |
| Network egress | Same-region or cached data | Expected transfer | Peak user or cross-region transfer |
Report the break-even value for the decision that matters. For example, state the interruption rate at which spot no longer beats on-demand, or the monthly utilization at which a commitment becomes cheaper than flexible pricing.
What is a repeatable GPU-cost worksheet?
- Describe the job: model, precision, batch size, sequence or image length, dataset size, target quality and deadline.
- List candidates: GPU memory, interconnect, region, host resources, GPU count and whether the quote is per GPU or instance.
- Run a representative pilot: include real preprocessing, checkpointing, evaluation and data movement.
- Record billed duration: provisioning through teardown, with the provider’s minimum billing rule.
- Capture the price: date, currency, region, purchase mode and exact hardware configuration.
- Calculate compute: apply the per-instance or per-GPU formula once.
- Add every ancillary line: disk, object storage, CPU/RAM, orchestration, snapshots, support and egress.
- Normalize output: run, epoch, step, image, request or million tokens.
- Stress the assumptions: vary runtime, utilization, GPU count, rate mode, transfer and restarts.
- Save evidence: retain the provider price page, quote timestamp and measured run logs so the estimate can be refreshed when prices or workload behavior change.
What mistakes make GPU estimates unreliable?
Using the advertised rate as the total
Fix it by itemizing storage, host resources, transfer, orchestration and support before presenting a total.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should taxes and currency conversion be included in the estimate?
Yes. Keep the provider’s quoted currency in the calculation, then add a separate conversion line using the exchange-rate date and any card, bank or tax charges. This preserves an auditable link between the provider bill and your finance report.
How can I budget for experiments that may never produce a usable model?
Track two metrics: cost per attempted run and cost per accepted model. Divide the total experimental budget by the historical acceptance rate to estimate the expected infrastructure spend for one accepted result; keep that factor separate from the GPU rate.
What utilization target should I use for an always-on inference GPU?
Do not choose a generic percentage. Derive it from request logs by measuring busy worker time, queue time, cold starts and maintenance windows over a representative period, then model a lower-demand month separately from peak demand.
How often should a GPU cost model be refreshed?
Refresh whenever you change region, GPU generation, precision, serving architecture or purchase mode, and at each budget cycle even if the workload is unchanged. Spot prices and promotional rates can move independently of your model’s throughput.
