What you are estimating
An Ethereum transaction has two separate quantities:

- Execution cost: the gas units consumed by the transaction.
- Payment: the ETH charged for each gas unit.
The basic estimate is:
estimated fee = estimated gas units × effective fee per gas
For an EIP-1559 transaction, Ethereum.org expresses the same idea as gas used × (base fee + priority fee). The ETH value in a transfer is not part of that multiplication. A transaction sending 0.2 ETH can use the same gas as one sending 2 ETH if every other field is identical.

Gas fees are paid in ether (ETH). Gwei is a smaller denomination: 1 gwei = 10-9 ETH. RPC methods return gas prices in wei, so divide a final wei result by 1018 to express it in ETH.
Why a fixed “average gas” number is unsafe
Gas is determined by what the EVM must execute, not simply by the amount of ETH involved. A plain transfer to an externally owned account is commonly documented as 21,000 gas units. A token transfer, contract call, swap, bridge operation, or transaction with large calldata executes different instructions and must be simulated with its actual destination, calldata and value.
Even an estimate from a node is not a guarantee. Ethereum JSON-RPC documentation warns that eth_estimateGas can return more gas than the transaction ultimately uses because of EVM mechanics and node performance. Treat the result as a simulation-based planning figure, retain a practical margin, and confirm that the simulation succeeds.

A token balance, allowance, contract storage slot, oracle value or deadline can change between the simulation and inclusion. Repeating an estimate after a meaningful state change is safer than reusing an old number, especially for swaps and other calls whose path depends on current state.
Step 1: Describe the exact transaction
Before asking for an estimate, assemble every field that can affect execution. Record:
from: the sender address.to: the recipient or contract address.value: the ETH amount, represented in wei for JSON-RPC.data: contract calldata, including the function selector and encoded arguments; use0xfor a plain transfer.chainId: the network on which the transaction will be broadcast.accessList, when the transaction type or application uses one.
Do not estimate a generic transfer and reuse its result for a contract method. Changing one argument, recipient, token amount or calldata path can change storage access, refunds, reverts and total gas. The transaction you simulate should be the transaction you sign; even a different sender can produce a different result when permissions or balances are checked.
Step 2: Estimate gas units with the node
Submit the same transaction fields to an Ethereum node using eth_estimateGas. A JSON-RPC request has this general shape (the exact hexadecimal values must come from your transaction):

}The result is a hexadecimal gas-unit count. Convert it to decimal for display and budgeting. If your wallet or library supplies a block tag, use the same state context you intend to send against; a state change between simulation and inclusion can alter the result.
A successful estimate means the node found a plausible execution path. It does not prove that a later transaction will succeed: balances, allowances, contract state, deadlines and competing transactions can change. A failed estimate is a diagnostic signal, not a reason to raise the gas limit blindly. Inspect the revert, the addresses, calldata, token allowance and chain before trying again.
Gas estimate versus gas limit
The simulated number is a planning estimate. The signed transaction also has a gas limit, which is the most gas the execution is allowed to consume. Set that limit with a practical margin over the successful estimate, but do not confuse a larger limit with a higher chance of overcoming a contract revert. If execution ends early, the unused portion of the limit is not charged; the final debit is based on gas actually consumed and the effective fee per gas.
How the 21,000-gas example fits
For a simple ETH transfer to an externally owned account with no contract calldata, 21,000 gas units is the documented example. It is a useful sanity check, not a universal constant. Sending ETH to a contract address can trigger code execution and require more gas, while token transfers and swaps are contract calls from the outset.

Step 3: Read current fee conditions
Gas units describe the work; fee fields describe how much you offer for that work. Query eth_feeHistory immediately before signing so the observation is close to the block in which you expect inclusion.
The method returns, for a requested recent block range:
- Base fees for the blocks in the range and a derived next-block base fee.
- Effective priority-fee rewards at the percentiles you request.
- Gas-used ratios, showing how full recent blocks were.
Use those signals together rather than copying a single gas-price number. Gas-used ratios show whether recent blocks were near their target, the base-fee series shows the direction and scale of recent changes, and reward percentiles show the tips that were actually effective. Select a lower priority-fee percentile when waiting is acceptable and a higher one when prompt inclusion matters. The observations become stale as new blocks arrive, so query close to signing rather than relying on a value copied earlier in the day.
Fee history is an input to a decision, not a guarantee of an inclusion time. A sudden demand change can make a previously adequate tip less competitive, while a quiet period can make a high tip unnecessary. If signing is delayed, refresh both the estimate and fee data instead of treating the old result as current.
Base-fee movement
The protocol adjusts the base fee according to block usage. Ethereum.org documents a maximum 12.5% adjustment per block under its gas-target rule. That limit does not predict the direction of the next block, and several blocks can pass before your transaction is included. Allow headroom in the maximum fee instead of setting it equal to a single observed base fee.
Step 4: Set EIP-1559 fee fields
A type-2 (EIP-1559) transaction has two fee controls:

Your maximum fee must be at least high enough to cover the block’s base fee plus the priority fee you intend to pay. A transaction whose maximum fee is below the block base fee cannot be included in that block.
The actual per-gas charge is bounded by the cap. In practical terms:
effective fee per gas = min(maxFeePerGas, baseFeePerGas + maxPriorityFeePerGas)
You pay the included block’s base fee and the priority fee actually charged, up to maxFeePerGas. The base fee per gas is burned under the EIP-1559 specification; it is not paid to the proposer. Any unused portion of the cap is not charged.
Think of the two fields as different promises. The priority fee expresses the tip you are willing to make available, while the maximum fee protects the transaction if the base fee rises before inclusion. Raising the cap without changing the tip mainly adds headroom; raising the tip can make the transaction more attractive when demand is high. Both values are denominated in wei per gas and should be checked against the same live fee data.

Step 5: Calculate the fee and convert units
Once you have the gas estimate and the fee fields, calculate:

For a conservative balance check before signing, use the ceiling instead:
maximum_fee_budget_wei = estimated_gas_units × maxFeePerGas
Then convert either result to ETH:
ETH = wei ÷ 1,000,000,000,000,000,000
The ceiling is a maximum budget, not a prediction of the final charge. If the transaction uses less gas than estimated, or the effective fee is below the cap, the actual debit is lower. Keep calculations in integer wei until the final display step so rounding does not accidentally understate the amount needed.

Worked plain-transfer example
Ethereum.org’s worked example uses 21,000 gas, a 10-gwei base fee and a 2-gwei priority fee:
- Effective fee per gas:
10 + 2 = 12 gwei. - Fee:
21,000 × 12 = 252,000 gwei. - ETH equivalent:
0.000252 ETH.
The 0.000252 ETH is the fee in that stated example; it is separate from whatever ETH value the transfer sends. If the transfer value were 0.2 ETH, the sender would budget for 0.200252 ETH at those stated conditions, subject to the maximum-fee check and any change before inclusion.
Worked contract-call example
Suppose a node simulates a contract call at 120,000 gas units. Assume, solely for illustration, that the current base fee is 18 gwei, the chosen tip is 2 gwei and the maximum fee is 30 gwei:
- Effective fee per gas:
min(30, 18 + 2) = 20 gwei. - Estimated fee:
120,000 × 20 = 2,400,000 gwei. - ETH equivalent:
0.0024 ETH. - Conservative cap budget:
120,000 × 30 = 3,600,000 gwei = 0.0036 ETH.
The example shows why a wallet can display a maximum possible fee that is higher than the expected charge. The 120,000-gas figure must come from simulation of that specific calldata; it is not a general allowance for every contract call.

Step 6: Check the balance correctly
For a transaction that sends ETH, the sender needs:
required balance = ETH value being transferred + maximum fee budget

For a contract call with zero ETH value, the balance still must cover the fee. For a token transfer, the token amount is taken from the token balance, but the network fee is still paid in ETH by the sender.
If a wallet says the balance is insufficient, compare the available ETH with the maximum budget, not only the expected fee. Also verify that the wallet is using the intended chain and that the transaction value has not been accidentally entered in wei while the interface expects ETH. A token balance cannot pay an ETH gas fee, and an ETH amount reserved for the transfer cannot be counted twice as fee liquidity.
Choosing between fee strategies
When a wallet offers “slow,” “standard” and “fast” settings, evaluate the underlying fields rather than the labels.

A larger maximum fee does not force you to pay that amount. It increases the authorized ceiling and the ETH you should have available, while the effective charge can remain much lower. Conversely, a very low ceiling can leave a correctly simulated transaction waiting indefinitely if the base fee rises above it.

The estimate is exactly 21,000 for a contract operation
Check whether the estimator actually received the contract address and calldata. A missing data field can make the request resemble a plain transfer. Re-run the simulation with the complete transaction object.
The transaction will not enter a block
Check that maxFeePerGas is above the current base fee and that the transaction uses the intended chain ID. If the base fee rose after signing, a cap that was adequate earlier may no longer be competitive for inclusion.

Compare all fields, not just the recipient: sender, value, calldata, access list, chain and simulation state. Then compare units. A wallet may show gwei or ETH while the RPC response is wei or hexadecimal gas units. An estimate from a different method, account or block state is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
eth_estimateGas fails
Do not solve a revert by multiplying the gas limit. Verify token allowance, contract parameters, deadline, sender permissions, recipient address and account balance. A deterministic contract revert will still revert with a larger limit and may consume simulation time without producing a sendable transaction.
The transaction used less gas than estimated
This is normal. Node documentation explicitly notes that estimates can exceed actual use. The unused gas limit is not charged; the final fee is based on gas actually consumed and the effective per-gas price, subject to the transaction’s cap.
The fee changed after signing
The signed cap remains the ceiling for that transaction, but the network can move while it waits. If the cap is below the base fee of a later block, the transaction cannot be included there. Refresh fee history before replacing or rebroadcasting, and do not assume that a previously observed base fee is still current.
Optional signing-security check
A hardware wallet can protect the private-key signing step, but it does not replace gas simulation or live fee analysis. Review the recipient, value, calldata, chain and fee fields on the wallet and signing device when available. Security of the signature and accuracy of the fee estimate are separate checks.

Pre-send checklist
- Confirm the network and chain ID.
- Confirm the sender and recipient addresses.
- Enter the ETH value separately from the fee budget.
- Include the exact calldata and access list, if any.
- Run
eth_estimateGasand confirm the simulation does not revert. - Query recent
eth_feeHistorydata immediately before signing. - Choose a priority-fee percentile based on urgency.
- Set
maxFeePerGashigh enough for the expected base fee and short-term movement. - Calculate both the expected fee and the maximum fee budget in wei, then convert to ETH.
- Verify that the sender’s ETH covers the transfer value plus the maximum budget.
- Review the wallet’s final transaction summary before approving the signature.
What cannot be known in advance
No static table can provide today’s correct Ethereum fee. The base fee, priority-fee market and block fullness are live conditions, and the base fee can change between the time you estimate and the time a block includes the transaction. The most defensible pre-send number is therefore a range or ceiling derived from a fresh simulation and fresh fee-history data, not a claimed current average.
For that reason, preserve the distinction between:
- Estimated charge: simulated gas multiplied by the current effective fee.
- Maximum budget: simulated gas multiplied by
maxFeePerGas. - Transfer value: the ETH or token amount the transaction is intended to move.
Keeping those three values separate prevents the most common budgeting error: believing that a displayed gas estimate is the amount being sent, or believing that a maximum fee cap will necessarily be debited.

How do I calculate the fee before clicking send?

What is the difference between max fee and priority fee?

How much ETH should I leave for gas?

Why did my estimate fail even after I increased the gas limit?
A failed simulation often indicates a revert caused by an allowance, deadline, parameter, permission, recipient, balance or chain problem. Increasing the limit does not fix a deterministic contract revert; inspect the transaction fields and simulation error instead.
Can I use yesterday’s gas price estimate?
It is risky. Base fees and priority-fee rewards are live conditions, and the base fee can change by as much as 12.5% per block under the documented gas-target rule. Query eth_feeHistory close to signing and refresh if the transaction waits.
Does a hardware wallet calculate Ethereum gas fees?
A hardware wallet protects the signing key and approval step, but it does not replace exact transaction simulation or live fee queries. Confirm the fee fields and transaction details separately before signing.
The Bottom Line
Simulate the exact transaction, query fresh fee-history data, and keep three numbers separate: gas units, the effective per-gas fee and the ETH value being sent. Use maxFeePerGas for a conservative balance budget, but expect the final charge to be lower whenever the transaction uses less gas or the effective fee is below the cap.
