Estimate a Lightning payment from the route your wallet or node is likely to use, then set a maximum fee before authorizing the payment. In LND, EstimateRouteFee can produce a graph-based lower-bound estimate from a destination and amount, or test an invoice with a payment-request probe. The result includes routing_fee_msat and a failure reason. A successful prepay probe should reach the destination and then fail because the payment details are intentionally incorrect, so the real invoice is not settled.
The estimate is not a permanent quote. Channel liquidity, forwarding policies, selected outgoing channels and route selection can change between the estimate and the actual payment. Recheck immediately before sending and enforce a ceiling with fee_limit_sat or fee_limit_msat when your wallet or node supports it.

What you actually pay on Lightning
A Lightning payment has two separate amounts: the amount the recipient’s invoice requests and the routing fee paid to nodes that forward the payment. The invoice amount is delivered to the recipient. The sender must budget for that amount plus the fees charged along the route.
Forwarding nodes set two policy values for each channel they operate:

- Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
- Base fee: a fixed charge applied when a node forwards an HTLC.
- Proportional fee: a rate applied to the amount being forwarded.
For one route, calculate the forwarding charge at every hop and add the results. The route’s total is therefore the sum of all per-hop base fees and all per-hop proportional charges. A route with more forwarding hops can cost more even when every individual policy is inexpensive.
Lightning Labs describes these charges as compensation for nodes that route payments on behalf of other nodes and commit their capital to channel liquidity. The fee belongs to the forwarding path, not to the recipient’s invoice.
The basic calculation
For a single forwarding hop, the conceptual calculation is:
Recommended Free Tools
hop fee = base fee + (amount forwarded × proportional rate)
The total route fee is:
route fee = hop 1 fee + hop 2 fee + … + final forwarding hop fee
Wallets and node software normally perform this arithmetic and display a total. LND reports the estimated amount in millisatoshis through routing_fee_msat; some interfaces also show satoshis. One satoshi is 1,000 millisatoshis, so check the unit before comparing a displayed amount with a limit.
Why multi-part payments can cost more
A multi-part payment splits one invoice amount across several routes or route segments. Each part is a separate forwarded HTLC, so each part can incur its own base fee. That can make the combined base-fee cost higher than sending the same amount over one path, even if splitting improves the chance of finding enough liquidity. The proportional component is calculated on the amount carried by each part, while the base component is charged per forwarded part.

Two ways to estimate a fee in LND
LND exposes two useful forms of EstimateRouteFee. Choose the graph estimate when you need a lower-bound planning figure without an invoice. Choose an invoice probe when you want information about the path selected for a specific payment request.
Graph estimate: destination plus amount
When no invoice is available, provide the destination and the amount you intend to send. LND uses its channel graph and known forwarding policies to calculate a lower bound for reaching that destination. Lightning Labs characterizes this result as a lower bound on what it may cost to send an HTLC to the target end destination.
A graph estimate is useful for budgeting or for deciding whether a prospective payment is economically sensible. It is not proof that a usable path exists at the moment you send. The graph does not reveal every detail of channel liquidity, and a path that appears inexpensive may be unable to carry your amount.
Invoice probe: the payment request
When you have a BOLT 11 invoice, pass its payment request to the estimate operation. LND can probe the payment path for that invoice and return the routing fee it expects for the current route conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA prepay probe tests the same amount with a random payment hash rather than the invoice’s real payment secret. If the route reaches the destination, the attempt should fail with incorrect payment details instead of settling the invoice. That gives you current route information without paying the merchant’s invoice. A probe can still fail before reaching the destination; in that case, its failure reason is more important than the fee number.
Pre-send workflow: check, cap and authorize
- Decode the invoice. Paste or scan the BOLT 11 invoice into a wallet that exposes a fee preview. Confirm the destination, invoice amount and expiry information shown by the wallet. Do not authorize until the displayed recipient and amount match your intention.
- Run the appropriate estimate. In LND, call
EstimateRouteFeewith the invoice’spayment_requestfor a probe-based estimate. If there is no invoice, use the destination and amount form for a graph estimate. - Read both outputs. Record
routing_fee_msatand the returned failure reason. A fee number without a successful, relevant route result is not an actionable quote. - Check the route status. Treat no route, timeout or insufficient-balance results as a reason to stop and change the conditions rather than as a fee you can safely accept. A successful probe provides route information, but still does not guarantee that the same path will remain available.
- Set a ceiling. Supply
fee_limit_satorfee_limit_msaton the payment attempt if your implementation supports those fields. The limit prevents the payment attempt from exceeding your chosen maximum routing fee. - Recheck immediately before approval. Route liquidity, node policies and path selection are dynamic. Perform the preview or probe as close as possible to the final authorization, especially for a large or time-sensitive payment.
- Authorize only after comparing totals. The maximum amount leaving your wallet is the invoice amount plus the allowed routing fee. Confirm that total against your available balance and your own fee ceiling.
How to choose a sensible fee limit
A fee limit is a risk control, not a promise that the payment will succeed. Set it high enough to permit a realistic route and low enough that an unexpected path cannot spend more than you accept.
Start with the estimate, not a universal percentage
Lightning has no single network-wide fee schedule. Every forwarding node can publish different base and proportional policies, and the path can contain different numbers of hops. Use the current route estimate as the starting point instead of assuming that a percentage that worked for another payment will work here.

Keep units consistent
LND can accept a ceiling in satoshis or millisatoshis. Match the unit of the field to the unit you calculated, and verify the wallet’s display before signing. A limit entered in the wrong unit can be far tighter or looser than intended.
Account for multi-part behavior
If the wallet may split the payment, leave room for repeated base fees. A ceiling that barely covers a single path may reject a valid multi-part attempt because each part can add its own base charge. Conversely, raising the limit does not force the wallet to use an expensive route; it only defines the maximum it may accept.
Use a deliberate decision rule
- Estimate is low and probe succeeds: set a limit modestly above the returned fee to allow small route changes, then send.
- Estimate is low but probe fails: do not treat the low number as usable. Investigate the failure or obtain a new route.
- Estimate is higher than your budget: lower the payment amount, try again later, or use another available channel or node. Do not silently raise your ceiling.
- No fee preview or limit is exposed: the wallet may still send, but you cannot enforce the same pre-send control. Consider software that displays both the estimate and the maximum before authorizing a consequential payment.
Reading the estimate and failure reason
The fee field and the failure field answer different questions. routing_fee_msat indicates the fee associated with the estimated route. The failure reason indicates whether the route could be tested or selected under the current conditions.
| Result | What it tells you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fee returned with a usable route | The node found a path that can be evaluated under the current graph or probe conditions. | Compare the fee with your budget, apply a fee limit, and recheck just before sending. |
| No route | No path meeting the amount and current routing constraints was found. | Do not send on the basis of the quoted number. Try a smaller amount, another channel or a later retry if appropriate. |
| Timeout | The attempt did not complete within the available time. | Retry only after checking connectivity and route conditions; a timeout is not a fee quote. |
| Insufficient balance | The selected path or a forwarding node could not carry the required amount. | Use a different outgoing channel, reduce the amount, or allow a different route if your wallet provides that control. |
| Incorrect payment details after a probe reaches the destination | The probe reached the destination but was intentionally rejected because it did not contain the real invoice payment details. | Use the route information to set your limit, then send the actual invoice only after checking it again. |
| Cancellation or another failure | The payment attempt ended for a reason not covered above. | Read the exact diagnostic, avoid assuming the fee is final, and obtain a fresh estimate before retrying. |
Why a quoted fee can change before settlement
Lightning estimates are route-specific and time-sensitive. The following changes can invalidate a preview without any error in the software:
Channel liquidity is only partially visible
A public channel graph can show that channels exist and can expose policy information, but it does not reveal every usable balance detail. A route that looks possible may fail when the actual HTLC is attempted because the required liquidity is on the other side of a channel or has been committed by another payment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your selected outgoing channel matters
If you choose a particular channel as the first hop, you remove routes that begin elsewhere. The remaining path may have a higher fee or no sufficient liquidity. A graph-wide lower bound therefore may not apply when the wallet is constrained to one outgoing channel.
Forwarding policies change
Nodes can update base fees and proportional rates. A route discovered earlier can therefore cost a different amount later, even if the destination and invoice are unchanged.

Concurrent payments consume capacity
Other activity can use channel liquidity while you are reviewing the estimate. This is one reason to perform the final check immediately before authorization instead of relying on a preview saved from an earlier session.
Multi-part routing changes the fee shape
Splitting a payment can replace one route with several. The proportional charges apply to the parts they carry, while each part can add a base fee. The final total may therefore differ from a single-path estimate.
Graph estimate versus invoice probe
| Question | Graph estimate | Invoice probe |
|---|---|---|
| What you provide | Destination and amount | A BOLT 11 payment request |
| Best use | Planning when no invoice is available | Checking a specific invoice and the route currently selected for it |
| Nature of result | A graph-based lower bound | A test of current path conditions |
| Can it prove settlement will work? | No; liquidity and route selection can differ at payment time | No; conditions can change after the probe |
| Distinct diagnostic value | Shows what the known graph suggests may be possible | A successful reach should end with incorrect payment details rather than settling the real invoice |
Use the graph form to answer, “What might this amount cost to reach that destination?” Use the probe form to answer, “Can the route for this particular invoice be tested now, and what fee does that path imply?” Neither replaces the fee limit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare wallets and node implementations
If you are choosing software for fee-aware payments, compare the controls it exposes rather than looking only for a headline fee percentage. The important differences are operational:
| Capability | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fee preview detail | Does the interface show the invoice amount, routing fee and total separately? | You can see what goes to the recipient and what goes to forwarding nodes. |
| Graph estimate | Can it estimate from a destination and amount when there is no invoice? | Useful for planning and liquidity decisions before a merchant creates an invoice. |
| Invoice probe | Can it test a BOLT 11 payment request without settling it? | Provides route-specific information for the payment you actually intend to make. |
| Configurable fee limit | Can you set a maximum in satoshis or millisatoshis? | Turns an estimate into an enforceable spending boundary. |
| Multi-part transparency | Does it indicate when a payment is split and account for per-part base fees? | Explains why a combined fee can exceed a single-path expectation. |
| Route diagnostics | Are the selected path, per-hop fees or failure reasons available? | Helps distinguish a high fee from a route that simply cannot carry the payment. |
If a product does not expose the selected path or per-hop details, it may still calculate the correct total internally, but troubleshooting a failed or unexpectedly expensive payment becomes harder.
Lightning routing fees are not Bitcoin transaction fees
Do not compare a Lightning routing fee directly with the fee for broadcasting an on-chain Bitcoin transaction. They pay for different resources.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Feature | Lightning payment | On-chain Bitcoin transaction |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives the fee | Forwarding nodes along the route | Miners include the transaction in a block |
| How it is priced | Per-hop base fee plus a proportional fee on the forwarded amount | Satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB), influenced by transaction size and block-space demand |
| Where you see it | A wallet or node’s routing-fee preview, often in millisatoshis | The wallet’s on-chain fee confirmation screen |
| What determines the amount | Route length, node policies, liquidity, path selection and whether the payment is split | Transaction virtual size and the fee rate selected for confirmation conditions |
Bitcoin.org states that a wallet shows the exact on-chain fee before you send. That statement concerns a Bitcoin transaction, not a Lightning route quote. Bitcoin.org also records that 100,000,000 satoshis equal 1 BTC and that a simple one-input, two-output transaction is around 140 virtual bytes. Those figures describe on-chain transaction accounting and should not be used to estimate a Lightning forwarding charge.

Worked planning example
Suppose an invoice requests a fixed amount and your node returns a routing fee in millisatoshis. The payment budget is the invoice amount plus that returned fee, converted into the unit your wallet uses for its balance and limit. If you set a ceiling just above the estimate, the payment can proceed when the route changes slightly but will stop if the required fee crosses your ceiling.
For a multi-part payment, perform the same check against the combined fee rather than multiplying a single-hop figure by the number of parts. Each part can take a different path and encounter a different policy. The wallet’s aggregate fee and the returned diagnostics are the authoritative values for that attempt.
This example is a method, not a promised network price. Actual amounts depend on the route, policies and liquidity available when you send.
Troubleshooting common situations
The wallet shows a fee but the payment fails
Re-run the estimate or probe and read the new failure reason. A displayed fee may have been valid for an earlier path that lost liquidity or became unavailable. Apply the fee limit again on the new attempt rather than assuming the original preview remains valid.
The probe returns incorrect payment details
When this occurs after the probe reached the destination, it is the expected protective result: the random payment hash or otherwise incorrect details prevented settlement. Treat the route and fee information as usable only for the immediate decision, then verify the real invoice and repeat the final authorization checks.
The estimate says no route
A no-route result means the current conditions do not provide an actionable path for that amount. Check whether an outgoing-channel restriction is excluding alternatives, whether the amount can be reduced, or whether your node has current connectivity. Do not send merely because a graph estimate previously returned a low lower bound.
The fee is higher than expected
Inspect hop count, forwarding policies and whether the wallet split the payment. A longer route adds another set of per-hop charges; a multi-part attempt can add base fees repeatedly. If the total exceeds your ceiling, stop and choose whether to retry under different route conditions or use another payment method.

A concise pre-send checklist
- Invoice decoded and destination verified.
- Invoice amount separated from the routing fee.
- Graph estimate used only as a lower-bound planning figure.
- Invoice probe used when a route-specific check is needed.
routing_fee_msatand the failure reason reviewed together.- No-route, timeout and insufficient-balance results treated as non-actionable.
- Fee limit set in the correct satoshi or millisatoshi unit.
- Multi-part base-fee effects considered.
- Final estimate or probe performed immediately before authorization.
- Total invoice amount plus permitted routing fee fits the available balance.
Key takeaways
Lightning fees are the sum of base and proportional charges at every forwarding hop. LND can estimate a lower bound from a destination and amount, or probe a specific BOLT 11 invoice to test current route conditions without settling it. Because liquidity, policies and path selection can change, use the result as a decision aid and pair it with an explicit fee ceiling. Keep Lightning routing fees separate from on-chain sat/vB fees: they compensate different participants and are calculated from different inputs.
