On Apple devices, the feature is called Emergency SOS via satellite and is documented for iPhone 14 or later. On Android, Google’s documented implementation is Satellite SOS on Pixel phones released since Pixel 9, except Pixel 9a. In both cases, the service depends on your exact model, software, country, network registration and an unobstructed view of the sky—not on a universal Android switch.
Set up your emergency contacts and medical information, run the built-in demonstration before traveling, and learn the real emergency flow. The demo is only practice; it does not contact emergency services. In a genuine emergency, try a normal call first, then follow the satellite emergency prompts shown by your phone.

What emergency satellite messaging does
Satellite SOS is a backup way to exchange essential information with emergency responders when your phone cannot reach a mobile network or Wi‑Fi. It is not ordinary satellite texting, a replacement for a telephone call when cellular service is available, or proof that coverage exists everywhere your phone can see the sky.

Apple and Google use different names, supported hardware and activation rules. Apple routes Emergency SOS messages through its satellite network and relay providers. Google’s Pixel feature registers the phone with a satellite network after required software and application programming interface updates. Both systems require you to be outdoors and to aim the phone according to on-screen instructions.

Messages may take longer than a normal text. Apple describes an ideal-condition connection as taking 30 seconds or more, with several minutes possible in less favorable conditions. Google says an emergency provider should reply by text within a few minutes after connection, while warning that connection and response times vary. Those figures describe possible timing, not a guaranteed response time.
Check your phone, software and country before relying on it
Apple: iPhone 14 or later
Apple documents Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhone 14 and later, provided the phone has compatible software and is in a supported country or region. Apple’s availability page lists Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The minimum iOS version differs by region, and use can be restricted for iPhones purchased in certain countries or regions. Check Apple’s current availability list for the country where the phone was purchased and where you will travel.
Apple says Emergency SOS via satellite is included for two years after activation of an iPhone 14 or later. That inclusion period is separate from any satellite service your carrier might offer, so check the terms that apply to your specific device and plan.

Google’s documented Android implementation is limited to Pixel devices since Pixel 9, except Pixel 9a. Google lists support in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia and the European countries shown on its support page. A listed country does not guarantee service at every location: network conditions and the relevant carrier’s government authorization also affect availability. Review Google’s current Pixel support information before a trip.

Satellite SOS becomes available only after required software and APIs have updated and the phone has registered with the satellite network. Google says the phone notifies you when the feature is active, and you can check service status in Settings. Google Messages must remain your default messaging app. Changing the default messaging app disables Satellite SOS.
Other Android phones
Android’s general Emergency SOS settings do not mean that every Android phone has satellite messaging. Manufacturers and carriers may implement different services, or none at all. If you do not have a supported Pixel model, consult the current emergency and satellite documentation for your exact manufacturer, model, software build and carrier. Do not assume that a recent Android version adds satellite capability by itself. Google’s Android Safety Center describes general emergency features separately from the Pixel Satellite SOS service.
Prepare before you leave cellular coverage
Add emergency contacts and medical information on iPhone
On an iPhone, add the people you want responders to be able to reach and complete Medical ID if it is appropriate for you. This information can make a satellite exchange more useful when you are injured, disoriented or unable to explain your medical needs. Apple’s setup instructions are in Use Emergency SOS via satellite on your iPhone.
Run Apple’s demonstration
- Open Settings.
- Tap Emergency SOS.
- Tap Try Demo and follow the aiming instructions.
Apple’s warning is explicit: “The Emergency SOS via satellite demo does not call emergency services.” Use it to learn the prompts and how moving the phone changes the connection indicator, not to test whether a real emergency center receives a message.

Run the Pixel demonstration
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Tap Satellite SOS.
- Follow the demonstration instructions.
During Google’s demo, the phone temporarily disables its mobile network. The network is restored when you exit the demo. Run it somewhere safe and do not mistake the temporary loss of cellular service for a fault.
Check the practical items
- Install pending operating-system, Google Play system and carrier updates before departure.
- Keep the phone charged and carry a way to protect it from rain or snow without blocking its sky view.
- Know the local emergency number for the country you are visiting. The satellite flow starts from that number, not from a generic “satellite text” app.
- Tell travel companions that a satellite session may require you to remain in one location and follow aiming prompts for several minutes.
How to send an emergency satellite message from an iPhone
Use this sequence only for a real emergency when ordinary calling cannot connect. Do not open Try Demo as a substitute for the emergency flow.
- Try the local emergency number first. Dial the emergency number used where you are. If the call connects, stay on the call and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
- Start Emergency Text via Satellite if the call fails. The iPhone presents the satellite option when it cannot establish a normal emergency call. Select Emergency Text via Satellite.
- Tap Report Emergency. Answer the questions on screen. The questionnaire gathers the details responders need and reduces the amount of typing required over a slow link.
- Move to an open location. Go outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Hold the iPhone naturally in your hand; Apple says you do not need to raise it overhead.
- Follow the aiming prompts. The phone shows how to turn or reposition it toward a satellite. Keep following the prompts while messages send and while you wait for replies.
- Remain available to the responder. Do not end the session merely because the situation appears less serious. Apple’s guidance says to wait for a responder and explain what happened.
In some regions, you can begin from the Messages app by texting the local emergency number. The exact option depends on local availability. If Messages does not offer that route, use the Emergency SOS flow presented after the failed emergency call.

Foliage, hills, mountains, canyons and tall structures can block or slow a satellite connection. Apple also says availability may fail above 62° latitude. A small move into a clearing or away from a building can make the difference, but do not leave a dangerous scene or separate from an injured person solely to improve reception.

According to Apple’s satellite connection guide, a message can take 30 seconds or more in ideal conditions and several minutes when conditions are worse. Keep the phone pointed as instructed and wait for the transmission indicator rather than repeatedly cancelling and restarting.
How to send an emergency satellite message from a supported Pixel
Google’s Pixel flow is available when you have no mobile or Wi‑Fi connection and Satellite SOS is active on the phone.
- Dial the local emergency number. Start with a normal emergency call, just as you would on an iPhone.
- Choose Satellite SOS. When the call cannot connect, select Satellite SOS, then tap Use Satellite SOS and Start.
- Complete the emergency questionnaire. Provide the requested information about the incident, your location and the people who need help.
- Choose whether to notify emergency contacts. Pixel’s flow asks whether you want to share emergency information and notify your contacts. You can decline that notification.
- Go outdoors and follow the aiming prompts. Keep a clear view of the sky so the phone can exchange messages with the satellite.
- Wait for replies. Google says the emergency provider should reply by text within a few minutes once connected, but connection and response times vary. Keep following the on-screen instructions until the exchange is complete.
If Satellite SOS is missing from Settings or from the failed-call screen, check the phone’s service-status message, install required updates, confirm that Google Messages is still the default messaging app and verify that your country and carrier are supported.

What happens to location and emergency information
Apple’s relay and location handling
Apple says its satellite network is provided by Globalstar, Inc. and affiliates or by third-party network providers. Emergency SOS messages are encrypted in transit and decrypted by Apple so they can be relayed to emergency services. Your location is shared with Apple and relay providers to route the request and help responders. This is part of the emergency-routing process, not ordinary public texting.

Google’s contact choice
Pixel Satellite SOS asks whether to notify emergency contacts and share emergency information. You can choose not to notify them. The choice is made during the emergency questionnaire, so review the prompt carefully rather than assuming every saved contact receives an alert.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The satellite option is not shown
- Verify the exact model. iPhone support starts at iPhone 14; Pixel support starts at Pixel 9 except Pixel 9a.
- Check the current country and purchase-region restrictions on Apple’s availability page or Google’s Pixel support page.
- Install required operating-system, API and carrier updates, then restart the phone if the service-status notice requests it.
- On Pixel, restore Google Messages as the default messaging app.
The phone cannot connect outdoors
- Move away from trees with dense foliage, cliffs, canyon walls, mountains and tall buildings.
- Use an unobstructed view of both sky and horizon, and follow the directional indicator instead of pointing the phone straight up.
- Stay still long enough for the transmission. Apple says an ideal message can take at least 30 seconds; Google says provider replies can take a few minutes.
- Check whether you are in a latitude, country or region where the provider says availability is limited.
The demo appears to disable service
That is expected during Google’s demo: mobile networking is temporarily disabled and restored when you exit. Apple’s demo likewise is only a simulation and does not call emergency services. Exit the demonstration before you need normal connectivity.
You are connected but help has not replied
Keep the phone outdoors, maintain the prompted orientation and continue answering questions. Response timing varies. Do not repeatedly cancel a session, and do not assume silence means the request was delivered or that help is unnecessary. If a normal call becomes possible, use it and tell the emergency provider that you already sent satellite information.

Use the right expectation in an emergency
Satellite SOS is a last-resort communications path, not a guarantee of immediate rescue. A compatible handset can still lack service because of country rules, software activation, registration, carrier authorization, terrain, structures, foliage, latitude or changing network conditions. Before going off grid, verify eligibility, complete the demo and plan how you will reach an open location without putting yourself or anyone else at greater risk.
When an incident occurs, attempt the local emergency call first. If it fails, use the exact satellite flow for your phone, answer the questionnaire accurately, follow the aiming prompts and remain available for the responder. That procedure gives emergency services the clearest information your device can transmit under the conditions.
