For U.S. residents with cash needed within about a year, the most practical non-stablecoin choices are an FDIC-insured savings account or CD, a staggered Treasury-bill ladder, and—when the cash already sits in a brokerage account—a carefully checked sweep vehicle or money-market fund. The right answer depends on when you need the money, whether you can accept a variable rate or a maturity commitment, how much price movement you can tolerate, and how federal and state taxes affect the net return.

Treasury bills can provide short maturities and an exemption from state and local income tax, while bank deposits are easier to access and CDs can lock a rate for a known term. Brokerage sweeps and money-market funds are convenient but are not interchangeable: one may be a bank deposit and the other a mutual fund without FDIC insurance. This is educational information, not individualized investment or tax advice; verify current rates, terms, insurance and tax rules before moving money.

Start with the trade-off, not the headline rate

“Yield” is only one part of a cash decision. A quoted annual percentage yield, discount rate or seven-day yield says little about whether you can get your money when a bill arrives, whether the balance is insured, or whether taxes and fees reduce the return. Evaluate every option on these dimensions:

  • Access: Can you withdraw today, after a business day, or only when a security matures?
  • Principal and price risk: Is the balance designed to remain stable, or can its market value fall before you sell?
  • Insurance or guarantee: Is it an insured bank deposit, a U.S. government obligation, or a mutual fund with no FDIC coverage?
  • Rate behavior: Is the return variable, fixed for a term, or determined at an auction?
  • Tax treatment: What is taxable federally, and what is exempt from state or local income tax?
  • Friction: Are there minimums, withdrawal penalties, reinvestment instructions, transfer holds or account fees?

That framework answers questions such as “Where should I park cash for yield?” more reliably than a list of the highest advertised rates.

How the main choices compare

Vehicle Principal and price risk Insurance or guarantee Access and maturity Rate type Tax treatment Operational work
Treasury bills Face value is paid at maturity; selling early exposes you to market-price risk. U.S. Treasury obligation; not FDIC deposit insurance. Regular terms of 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26 or 52 weeks; secondary-market sale is possible. Auction-determined discount rate or yield. Federal taxable interest; exempt from state and local income tax. Choose an auction, fund the purchase and decide what to do at maturity.
Insured savings account Deposit balance does not fluctuate with market prices. FDIC insurance applies within the applicable ownership and coverage limits. Usually on-demand access, subject to the bank’s transfer and withdrawal rules. Variable; the bank can change it. Interest generally taxable federally and by states that tax income. Low; monitor the rate and account terms.
Certificate of deposit Deposit balance is stable at the bank; early withdrawal can incur a penalty. FDIC insurance applies within the applicable limits. Fixed term; access before maturity depends on the penalty and contract. Usually fixed for the selected term. Interest generally taxable as it accrues under applicable tax rules. Moderate; select terms and manage maturities.
Brokerage bank sweep Deposit balance is generally stable; exact terms depend on the sweep program. May be distributed among participating banks under the program’s insurance rules. Designed for brokerage-account liquidity, subject to the firm’s procedures. Variable and set by the program. Generally taxable interest in a taxable account. Check the current disclosure, banks, rate and withdrawal mechanics.
Money-market fund NAV and income can vary; it is not a bank deposit. No FDIC insurance because it is a mutual fund. Shares are normally redeemable through the brokerage, subject to fund and market procedures. Floating seven-day yield after expenses. Depends on the fund’s portfolio and your account type; government, prime and tax-exempt funds differ. Compare category, yield, expense ratio and tax character.
Municipal bonds or municipal money-market funds Credit, duration, liquidity and market-price risk can apply. Not a deposit guarantee; protection depends on the security or fund. Varies by maturity and market liquidity. Coupon or fund yield; market values move. Interest is generally exempt from federal tax and may receive state or local exemption when conditions are met. Higher; assess credit, maturity, duration and after-tax value.

Treasury bills: short maturities with planning requirements

TreasuryDirect describes itself as the official United States government application for buying and holding Treasury marketable securities. Individuals can buy bills there or through a bank, broker or dealer. Treasury bills are issued in 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26- and 52-week terms, with a $100 minimum purchase in $100 increments.

How a bill produces interest

A bill is sold at par or at a discount and pays its face value at maturity. The difference between what you pay and the face value is the interest. TreasuryDirect presents the educational relationship as Price = Face value (1 – (discount rate x time)/360). The actual auction determines the applicable rate or yield, so a future bill does not have a guaranteed rate today.

For a bill held to maturity, the planned cash flow is straightforward: pay the discounted purchase price, then receive the face amount on the maturity date. If you sell before maturity, the price can be higher or lower than your cost because market rates and demand change. Brokerage commissions, spreads or other transaction considerations may also apply, depending on where you sell.

Buying bills step by step

  1. Set the cash date. List when the money is needed and leave a separate operating buffer for expenses that cannot wait for a maturity date.
  2. Choose the channel. TreasuryDirect accepts individual noncompetitive bids. A bank, broker or dealer may offer a different interface and secondary-market access; read its current fee and transfer terms.
  3. Select the term and amount. Use a 4- to 52-week maturity that matches your spending plan. Purchases start at $100 and increase in $100 increments.
  4. Submit a noncompetitive purchase or other permitted order. A noncompetitive TreasuryDirect bid accepts the auction’s resulting rate rather than specifying your own maximum rate.
  5. Record the maturity date. Put the date and expected face-value proceeds on your calendar. Decide in advance whether the proceeds will be spent, transferred or reinvested.

Taxes on Treasury bills

Interest from Treasury bills, notes and bonds is taxable for federal income-tax purposes. Treasury interest is exempt from state and local income taxes. That exemption can make a bill more attractive than a bank product with the same headline yield for someone in a high-tax jurisdiction, but the comparison must use after-tax yield and the investor’s actual tax situation.

Building a Treasury-bill ladder

A ladder spreads money across maturity dates instead of putting the entire balance into one bill. For example, you could divide funds among 4-, 8-, 13-, 26- and 52-week maturities, with each rung sized around an expected spending date. When a rung matures, use the proceeds or reinvest them into a new bill. TreasuryDirect confirms that proceeds from a maturing bill can be used to buy another bill.

Why laddering helps

  • It creates several planned liquidity dates, reducing the chance that you must sell early.
  • It spreads reinvestment decisions across auctions instead of forcing one all-or-nothing rate decision.
  • It can align maturities with tuition, a tax payment, a home purchase or other known cash needs.

A ladder is a cash-flow schedule, not a promise to outperform savings accounts or to lock today’s rate for every future rung. The rate for each replacement bill is unknown until its auction. Keep the emergency reserve outside the ladder if an unexpected expense could arise before the next maturity.

Ladder implementation checklist

  1. Write down the total amount available and the minimum cash reserve that must remain immediately accessible.
  2. Map each known spending date to a maturity that occurs early enough to allow for transfer time.
  3. Use the $100 increment rule to divide the investable amount among rungs.
  4. Track auction and maturity dates in one calendar, including instructions for TreasuryDirect or the brokerage.
  5. At each maturity, compare the new auction rate with your cash need and tax-adjusted alternatives before reinvesting.

FDIC-insured savings accounts and CDs

Savings accounts: simplest access, variable rate

An insured savings account is usually the least complicated home for cash that may be needed at any time. The balance does not move with bond prices, and withdrawals are handled through the bank’s normal transfer or payment system. The trade-off is that the interest rate is variable and institution-specific. A bank can lower it without changing your principal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the bank’s current APY, minimum balance, monthly fee, transfer limits, withdrawal rules and deposit-insurance status. Do not assume that a high introductory rate lasts indefinitely or that every account at a financial institution has identical terms.

Certificates of deposit: fixed term, less flexibility

A CD generally pays a stated rate for a selected term. In exchange for that certainty, the contract may impose an early-withdrawal penalty or limit access until maturity. Examine the penalty formula, automatic-renewal instructions, grace period, minimum deposit and whether interest can be withdrawn without breaking the CD.

Use a single CD when the cash date is known and the penalty risk is acceptable. A CD ladder uses several maturity dates—such as three, six, nine and twelve months—so part of the balance becomes available periodically. Future CD rates are not guaranteed, and a ladder can reinvest at lower rates when the market changes.

FDIC national benchmarks dated April 20, 2026

The following figures are national benchmarks published by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation on April 20, 2026. They are not quotes from a particular bank and should not be presented as October 2026 offers without a newer official table.

Deposit product FDIC national benchmark How to use it
Savings account 0.38% Context for evaluating an account’s variable APY; not a guaranteed offer.
Money-market deposit account 0.57% Benchmark for a bank deposit account, not a money-market mutual fund.
3-month CD 1.25% National benchmark for that term as of the stated date.
6-month CD 1.44% National benchmark for that term as of the stated date.
12-month CD 1.53% National benchmark for that term as of the stated date.

These benchmarks illustrate why a rate comparison must identify the date, term and product type. They do not establish what any bank is paying now.

Brokerage cash sweeps: inspect the default

If idle cash is already in an investment account, the brokerage may automatically sweep it into a cash vehicle. Investor.gov explains that bank sweep programs move uninvested cash into deposit accounts at one or more banks and generally pay a variable interest rate. The exact yield, participating banks, insurance treatment and withdrawal mechanics depend on the brokerage’s current agreement.

Questions to answer before leaving cash in a sweep

  • Is the default sweep a bank deposit or a money-market mutual fund?
  • Which banks hold the deposits, and how is insurance capacity allocated across ownership categories?
  • What rate is paid today, how often can it change, and is there a different rate for another sweep option?
  • How quickly can proceeds be used for a trade or transferred out?
  • Are there account fees, balance tiers or restrictions?

“Cash sweep” is a description of an arrangement, not a single product. Read the current sweep disclosure and account agreement instead of inferring protection or yield from the label.

Money-market funds are not money-market deposit accounts

What a money-market fund is

A money-market fund is a mutual fund that invests in high-quality, short-term debt. Investor.gov identifies government, tax-exempt and prime categories. The fund reports a current seven-day yield after expenses, and that yield changes as portfolio income and short-term rates change.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An investment in a money-market fund has no FDIC insurance because it is a mutual fund, not a bank product. Its value and income are not the same legal promise as an insured deposit. Inflation can also reduce the purchasing power of returns. When short-term rates are very low, fund expenses can exceed income and contribute to losses.

How to evaluate a fund

  • Category: Government, prime and tax-exempt funds have different portfolios and tax characteristics.
  • Seven-day yield: Treat it as a recent annualized measure, not a fixed future return.
  • Expense ratio: A higher fee directly reduces the amount reaching you.
  • Liquidity: Review redemption, settlement and any temporary restrictions.
  • Tax character: Tax-exempt income may not be entirely exempt in every jurisdiction; read the fund’s tax information.
  • Account wrapper: A taxable brokerage account and a tax-advantaged account produce different tax consequences.

Money-market fund versus money-market deposit account

Feature Money-market deposit account Money-market fund
Legal form Bank deposit account. Mutual fund shares.
FDIC insurance May apply within applicable limits at an insured bank. None.
Rate or yield Variable bank-deposit rate. Floating seven-day yield after fund expenses.
Price behavior Deposit balance is not marked to a market NAV. Fund income and value can vary.
Typical location Bank account. Brokerage or retirement account.

Municipal bonds and municipal money-market funds

Municipal-bond interest is generally exempt from federal income tax and may also be exempt from state and local tax for residents of the issuing state. That tax feature can be valuable to a high-tax investor, but a tax-exempt label does not make the investment a cash equivalent.

Individual municipal bonds can have credit, maturity, duration, liquidity and market-price risk. A municipal money-market fund has its own portfolio, expenses and redemption terms. Use either only when you can tolerate those risks and the after-tax result is better than a simpler insured deposit or Treasury bill. Money needed on a fixed near-term date should not be exposed to a maturity or price mismatch merely to obtain a tax label.

Compare after-tax yield instead of APY alone

For a taxable investment, a simple estimate is:

after-tax yield = stated yield × (1 − marginal tax rate)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a hypothetical 5% yield taxed at a combined 30% marginal rate leaves about 3.5% before considering fees. A Treasury bill with a slightly lower headline yield could produce the higher after-tax result for a taxpayer whose state and local taxes do not apply to Treasury interest. Conversely, a tax-exempt municipal investment may be useful only when its credit, duration and liquidity risks fit the cash purpose.

Do not compare a bank APY, a Treasury discount rate and a fund’s seven-day yield as though they were identical measurements. Confirm the compounding convention, quoted period, tax character, fees and the date of each figure.

Match the vehicle to the cash horizon

Money needed within days

Keep this amount in an immediately accessible insured deposit or the brokerage cash vehicle whose settlement and withdrawal rules you have verified. A bill or CD that matures later can force an early sale or penalty.

Money needed in one to three months

A short Treasury bill, an insured savings account or a short CD can fit. Choose the bill only if its maturity and transfer time match the spending date; choose the CD only if the early-withdrawal restriction is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Money needed in three to twelve months

A staggered Treasury-bill ladder or CD ladder can create planned access dates. Use savings for the portion whose date is uncertain. Compare the Treasury state-tax exemption with the bank product’s after-tax yield.

Money with no scheduled date but low tolerance for loss

Favor insured deposits or a ladder whose maturities are spaced widely enough to cover surprises. A money-market fund may be convenient in a brokerage account, but the absence of FDIC insurance and the fund’s variable yield must be acceptable.

Money that can remain invested beyond a year

Longer maturities and municipal bonds may enter the discussion, but they introduce more duration, credit and price risk. They should not be selected solely because a tax-exempt yield appears attractive.

Implementation and maintenance checklist

  1. Separate emergency cash and near-term bills from money genuinely available for a term commitment.
  2. Write the required amount, date and acceptable delay for every planned use of the cash.
  3. Verify that the institution or security provides the insurance or guarantee you think it does.
  4. Compare net, after-tax yield using the same time basis and include all account, fund, transaction and early-withdrawal fees.
  5. For Treasuries, record the auction, settlement and maturity dates and decide whether proceeds will roll over.
  6. For CDs, turn off automatic renewal when a maturity date matters, or confirm the renewal term and grace period.
  7. For a brokerage sweep, download the current disclosure and identify whether it is a deposit sweep or a fund sweep.
  8. Review rates and terms whenever cash moves, a maturity arrives or the account changes its default setting.

Common mistakes and fixes

Chasing a rate without checking access

Problem: The highest rate is attached to a term, transfer delay or penalty that conflicts with the cash date.
Fix: Put the required date and acceptable access time ahead of the advertised yield.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every sweep is insured

Problem: The word “cash” is mistaken for an FDIC-insured deposit.
Fix: Identify the legal vehicle in the sweep disclosure and confirm the insurance arrangement.

Confusing a money-market fund with a bank account

Problem: A fund’s seven-day yield is treated as a guaranteed APY.
Fix: Check the fund category, expense ratio, tax treatment, redemption mechanics and lack of FDIC coverage.

Putting all cash in one maturity

Problem: A single bill or CD matures at the wrong time, forcing a sale or penalty.
Fix: Use a ladder or retain a separate liquid reserve.

Using stale rate data

Problem: A national benchmark or old auction result is presented as today’s offer.
Fix: Check the latest official auction result, bank disclosure, sweep terms or fund yield immediately before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most cash needed within roughly one year, begin with insured savings or CDs for simplicity and a Treasury-bill ladder for planned maturities and potential state-tax savings. Use brokerage sweeps and money-market funds only after identifying exactly what holds the cash and what protection applies. Municipal choices can improve after-tax income for some investors, but they are not automatically stable or liquid. The strongest decision is the one whose access date, principal risk, insurance, tax treatment and maintenance burden match the job the cash must perform.
