How to e-verify your income tax return after missing the 30-day deadline

By TheFinanceBase Team 13 min read

If you uploaded an Indian income-tax return but did not verify it within 30 days, sign in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and open e-File > Income Tax Returns > e-Verify Return. Select the affected return, submit a condonation-of-delay request with the real reason for the delay, and provide supporting evidence where relevant. Condonation is discretionary: sending the request does not by itself make the return valid. After the department approves the delay, complete e-verification using an available method such as Aadhaar OTP, bank or demat EVC, net banking or a digital signature certificate (DSC).

This guide covers a return that was uploaded but remains unverified. It is different from a return that was never filed.

What the 30-day deadline means

For current Indian income-tax returns, verification or submission of signed ITR-V must generally be completed within 30 days after the return is uploaded. The Income Tax Department introduced the current 30-day treatment through Notification No. 2/2024, effective 1 April 2024. The department’s current guidance treats the date of e-verification or ITR-V submission as important when the 30-day period is missed.

If you uploaded the return by the filing due date but verify it after 30 days, the later verification date may be treated as the date on which the return was furnished. That can trigger consequences that apply to a late-filed return. If the return is not verified within the applicable period, it can be treated as invalid unless the department condones the delay.

An older general FAQ refers to a 120-day period for returns filed on or before 31 July 2022. For present-day returns, use the 30-day rule and the current portal workflow rather than relying on that historical reference.

First check whether the return is actually unverified

Before filing a condonation request, sign in to your e-Filing account and review the return list and acknowledgement details. Confirm that:

  • the return was uploaded successfully;
  • the acknowledgement number belongs to the return you intend to verify;
  • the status indicates that verification is pending, incomplete or otherwise not completed; and
  • you are not looking at a return that was rejected, already verified or never submitted.

Save the acknowledgement and the date of upload. You will use those details when explaining why the 30-day period expired. Also check the assessment year and taxpayer identity before you begin. Individuals who have more than one return or account should not assume that the first item shown in the list is the correct one.

Why the upload and verification dates both matter

Uploading the data and authenticating the return are separate events. The upload creates a return record, but verification confirms that the taxpayer stands behind that record. The department’s 30-day rule measures the period after upload. If verification happens outside that period, the later verification or ITR-V date may be used as the furnishing date, even where the upload itself occurred by the filing due date.

That distinction can affect whether late-filing consequences apply. It also explains why an acknowledgement alone is not proof that the return is valid. Keep both the upload acknowledgement and the later verification confirmation so you can demonstrate the complete sequence.

How to submit a late-verification request

  1. Sign in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal. Use the account associated with the taxpayer whose return is pending verification.
  2. Open the verification service. Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > e-Verify Return.
  3. Choose the affected return. Select e-Verify beside the relevant acknowledgement.
  4. Read the late-verification prompt. When the portal detects that more than 30 days have passed, it will route you to the reason-for-delay or condonation workflow.
  5. Enter a truthful explanation. Select the closest reason from the menu. If you choose Others, enter the circumstances in the remarks box as the portal manual requires. Give dates and facts that match your records; do not paste a generic explanation that is inaccurate.
  6. Submit the request and note its reference details. Keep a copy of the acknowledgement, the submitted explanation and any transaction or request number shown by the portal.

The department’s condonation guidance states that approval is not automatic and depends on the validity or genuineness of the reasons provided. A request that is merely submitted or marked pending does not restore the return’s validity.

What makes a condonation request persuasive

The law and portal guidance do not promise approval for a particular category of delay. Your explanation should therefore focus on the specific event that prevented verification and why you acted as soon as you could.

Describe the actual timeline

State when the return was uploaded, when you discovered it was still unverified, and what prevented verification during the 30-day period. Avoid broad statements such as “technical issue” unless you can explain what failed and when. If access was restored later, state when that happened and when you attempted verification.

Attach relevant evidence

Where the portal allows documents, provide records that support the explanation, such as account or communication records showing an access problem, evidence of a medical or family emergency, or other contemporaneous documents. Submit only material that relates to the delay and keep the originals. Do not upload unrelated personal documents or make claims that the attachments cannot support.

Explain corrective action

Tell the department what you did once the problem was discovered—for example, restoring account access, updating an authentication method or attempting verification again. This does not guarantee relief, but it gives the decision-maker a complete chronology.

Use the taxpayer’s own facts

A short, precise explanation is safer than a long template. Identify the return, the relevant dates, the obstacle and the action taken. If someone else prepared or uploaded the return, explain the verification problem from the taxpayer’s perspective rather than implying that preparation alone completed the filing process.

Monitor the decision

Use the portal’s request-status facility to see whether the condonation application is submitted, pending, approved or rejected. The department does not publish a guaranteed processing time or an approval percentage, so do not assume that silence means approval. Keep checking the account and retain any message displayed with the decision.

What approval changes—and what it does not

Condonation is the department’s decision to excuse the delay. It is not an automatic extension, a guarantee that the original upload date will be restored, or a substitute for verification. The return becomes capable of being treated as valid only when the delay is approved and the return is successfully verified through an accepted method.

Read the status carefully. “Request submitted” or “under process” describes the application, not the final validity of the return. If the request is rejected, the late delay has not been excused. If it is approved, complete the verification step promptly and save the resulting transaction details.

When to complete e-verification

After the portal permits verification, select a method that is already enabled and accessible for the taxpayer. Depending on the account, the department lists these electronic options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method What must already be available Practical check before starting
Aadhaar OTP The mobile number registered with Aadhaar must be available to receive the one-time password. Confirm that the registered mobile is active and can receive the OTP.
Electronic Verification Code (EVC) from a bank account The bank account must be pre-validated in the e-Filing account and eligible to generate an EVC. Do not expect an unvalidated account to generate a usable code.
EVC from a demat account The demat account must be pre-validated and supported for EVC. Check the validation status before choosing this route.
Net banking Your bank’s net-banking access must be linked or enabled for e-Filing verification. Have the bank login and any required second-factor device ready.
Digital Signature Certificate A valid DSC and the required signing setup must be registered for the taxpayer. Make sure the certificate is current and recognised by the portal.

The portal may show only the methods available for your account. An inactive bank or demat account, an unlinked mobile number or an unregistered DSC will not become usable simply because the verification deadline was missed.

Choosing between electronic and paper verification

Electronic verification is usually the more direct route because the portal can display the methods already associated with the taxpayer’s account and provide an immediate success message. The practical choice depends on what is enabled: an Aadhaar-linked mobile, a pre-validated bank or demat account, net banking or a registered DSC.

Paper ITR-V is a manual alternative when electronic methods are unavailable. It requires printing, signing and dispatching the form, and you must retain proof of posting. It does not remove the need to meet the applicable timing rule or obtain condonation for a late submission. Do not buy a DSC solely because the deadline was missed; the department lists several other verification methods.

How to finish the electronic verification

  1. Return to e-File > Income Tax Returns > e-Verify Return and select the same acknowledgement.
  2. Choose the enabled method displayed by the portal.
  3. Complete the OTP, EVC, net-banking or DSC prompts exactly as shown. Do not share an OTP or EVC with another person.
  4. Wait for the confirmation screen. The department’s manual and FAQ describe a successful-verification message and a transaction ID.
  5. Save the transaction ID, acknowledgement, date and method used. Then revisit the return status to confirm that it has changed from pending verification.

If the condonation decision is still pending, the portal may accept a verification action or keep the return in a pending state. In either case, the return is not treated as valid merely because you completed the request or entered an OTP; the department’s approval of the delay is the controlling step.

Late verification is not the same as late filing

These situations are often confused:

Situation What the 30-day rule does What you should do
Return uploaded by the filing due date and verified within 30 days The verification is within the normal window. Keep the success message and transaction ID.
Return uploaded by the filing due date but verified after 30 days The verification or ITR-V date may be treated as the furnishing date, with applicable late-filing consequences. Use the late-verification workflow and request condonation with an accurate explanation.
Return uploaded but never verified It may be treated as invalid unless the delay is condoned. Submit the condonation request and complete verification when permitted.
No return was uploaded at all The 30-day verification rule does not turn an unfiled return into a filed return. Follow the rules for filing a return, including any applicable deadline or late-filing provisions.

Condonation is not a guaranteed extension of the original filing date. It is a discretionary decision on whether the department will excuse the delay in verification.

If electronic verification is unavailable: the signed ITR-V route

The department also allows manual submission of a signed ITR-V. This is a separate route from e-verification and still has to meet the applicable timing requirements or be covered by an approved condonation request.

For the manual route, Notification No. 51/2026 specifies that Form ITR-V is to be sent by speed post only to:

Older help pages may show different postal instructions. Check the latest notification before mailing, retain the signed copy and postal receipt, and use the tracking information to document dispatch. Do not send paper ITR-V merely because an electronic method is inconvenient if an available e-verification option can be completed more quickly.

Troubleshooting common problems

The portal still shows “pending verification” after I used an OTP

Save the transaction ID and check the return status again. A successful authentication attempt and a final valid-return status are not always the same event when a late-verification condonation request is involved. Confirm whether the condonation request has been approved.

There is no usable Aadhaar OTP

The OTP goes to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. If that number is unavailable or not linked, choose another method displayed for the account, such as a pre-validated bank or demat EVC, net banking or DSC. Do not assume an unlinked mobile will work.

The bank or demat EVC option fails

Check that the account is pre-validated in the e-Filing profile and that the account is eligible for EVC. If validation is incomplete, use another enabled method rather than repeatedly requesting codes from an account the portal cannot verify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Net banking does not appear

Only methods enabled for the account are displayed. Confirm that the bank’s net-banking route is supported and linked for e-Filing, then try another displayed option if it is not available. Do not treat the absence of a method as evidence that the return has been rejected.

The DSC is not recognised

Check that the certificate is valid, registered for the taxpayer and recognised by the portal’s signing setup. If the DSC route remains unavailable, use Aadhaar OTP, EVC or net banking when one of those methods is enabled.

The portal asks for a reason but none fits exactly

Select the closest truthful category. If none is suitable, use Others and explain the circumstances in the remarks box, including relevant dates and why verification could not be completed earlier.

The condonation request is rejected

Read the status and any instruction shown in the portal. A rejection means the late delay has not been excused; the uploaded return should not be treated as valid merely because verification was attempted. Keep the rejection record and obtain qualified Indian tax advice if the consequences are material or the facts are complex.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The return was uploaded under the wrong account or acknowledgement

Stop before submitting a request. Match the taxpayer identity, acknowledgement number and assessment year to the return you intend to verify. A request attached to the wrong return can create a separate correction problem.

When professional help may be useful

Most straightforward cases can begin with the portal’s self-service workflow. Consider qualified Indian tax-professional advice when the delay involves several returns, a disputed acknowledgement, a rejected condonation request, substantial late-filing consequences or evidence that is difficult to organise. Professional assistance does not guarantee approval, and you should still verify that any explanation submitted in your name is complete and accurate.

Records to keep after verification

Maintain one folder containing:

  • the original filing acknowledgement;
  • the date the return was uploaded;
  • a copy of the condonation explanation and supporting documents;
  • the condonation request reference and decision;
  • the final e-verification transaction ID or ITR-V postal receipt; and
  • a screenshot or downloaded copy of the updated return status.

These records show the sequence from upload through approval and verification if the return’s status is questioned later. Keep postal tracking details for the manual route and do not discard the signed ITR-V copy until the portal reflects the outcome.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Confirm that the return was uploaded and identify its acknowledgement.
  2. Count 30 days from the upload date and note how far outside the window you are.
  3. Open e-File > Income Tax Returns > e-Verify Return.
  4. Submit a factual condonation explanation when the portal asks for one.
  5. Check the request status instead of assuming submission equals approval.
  6. Use the electronic method that your account already supports.
  7. Save the success message and transaction ID.
  8. If using paper, follow the current Notification No. 51/2026 speed-post instruction and retain proof of dispatch.

The central issue is sequence: an uploaded return must be verified, and a verification delay beyond 30 days must be condoned before the return can be treated as valid. Complete both parts and preserve evidence of each step.

Does submitting a condonation request make my return valid?

No. Condonation is not automatic. The return is not treated as valid merely because the request was submitted or is pending; approval and successful verification are required.

Can I use Aadhaar OTP after the deadline?

Yes, if the portal makes Aadhaar OTP available and the mobile number registered with Aadhaar can receive the OTP. The method must be enabled for the taxpayer’s account.

What if my Aadhaar-linked mobile number is unavailable?

Use another method displayed by the portal, such as EVC from a pre-validated bank or demat account, net banking or a registered DSC. An unlinked mobile will not receive the Aadhaar OTP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an unvalidated bank account generate an EVC?

The department’s guidance requires a pre-validated, eligible bank account for bank EVC. If validation is incomplete, choose another enabled method.

Is late verification the same as late filing?

No. The 30-day period concerns verification after upload. However, when a return uploaded by the filing due date is verified late, the later verification or ITR-V date may be treated as the furnishing date, with applicable late-filing consequences.

What is the current postal address for ITR-V?

Notification No. 51/2026 specifies speed-post dispatch only to Centralized Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru 560500. Check the latest notification before mailing because older help pages may differ.

How long does condonation approval take?

The department’s reviewed guidance does not promise a processing time or publish an approval percentage. Monitor the request status in the e-Filing account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What evidence should accompany a condonation request?

Provide relevant records supporting the actual reason for delay, such as access-problem communications or documents relating to a medical or family emergency, where the portal permits attachments. Keep originals.

What should I save after successful verification?

Keep the filing acknowledgement, condonation decision, verification date and method, success message, transaction ID and updated return-status record. For paper ITR-V, also retain the signed copy, postal receipt and tracking details.

The Bottom Line

If an uploaded return is still unverified after 30 days, use e-File > Income Tax Returns > e-Verify Return, submit a factual condonation request and monitor its decision. After approval, verify through an enabled Aadhaar OTP, EVC, net-banking or DSC route, then save the transaction ID and updated status. A request alone does not validate the return.
