It is identified mainly through the PAN and holding pattern of the first or sole holder.
Use the official NSDL or CDSL route that applies to your account, open the password-protected PDF with the first holder’s PAN in capital letters, then verify the identity details, statement period, holdings, values, transactions and closing balances. The checks below also explain what to do when a folio or demat account is absent or a transaction does not match your records.

What a CAS contains
SEBI defines CAS as a “single/ combined account statement” showing an investor’s transactions during a month across mutual funds and other securities held in demat accounts. In practical terms, it replaces several separate statements with one consolidated view.
NSDL describes its CAS as a single statement containing transactions and holdings in an investor’s NSDL and CDSL demat account(s), together with mutual-fund units held in Statement of Account (SOA) form. That means the document can include dematerialised securities as well as mutual-fund units that are not held in a demat account.

How accounts are matched
Consolidation is driven primarily by the PAN of the first or sole holder and by the holding pattern. A folio or demat account in a different first-holder name, joint-holder order or holding pattern may therefore appear in a different statement or not be included in the expected CAS. Verify those fields before treating an omission as an error.
If you maintain demat accounts at both depositories, the depository connected to the earlier-opened demat account generally issues the CAS. The statement can still contain holdings from both NSDL and CDSL, because the purpose of CAS is to present them together.
What CAS is—and is not
- It is an official record for checking transactions and holdings across the accounts and folios covered by the consolidation rules.
- It is not, by itself, a tax computation, a capital-gains statement or an investment recommendation. Use contract notes, broker records, fund statements and tax reports for those purposes.
- A value shown in the portfolio section is the value stated by the statement for its reporting date; it is not a promise of future performance.
When you should receive a CAS
A transaction in any covered demat account or mutual-fund folio generally triggers a CAS for the following month. Purchases, sales, switches, redemptions, transfers, credits, debits, dividends or other listed events can therefore result in a monthly statement.
When there are no transactions but holdings remain, the normal half-yearly cycle is based on March-end and September-end holdings, with statements generally sent in April and October. NSDL also describes an annual dispatch for accounts with no transactions or balances. Account type and current depository rules can affect the exact schedule, so use the cycle stated by your depository if it differs.
The CAS is associated with the period printed in the statement, not necessarily the day you download it. A statement generated in April may report March-end holdings or activity during the preceding month, so read the “statement period” and “as at” date before reconciling figures.
Choose the correct download route
Use a depository CAS when you need demat securities and mutual-fund information in one record. Mutual-fund-only services are useful for portfolio information but do not replace a depository CAS for securities held in demat accounts.

For a combined record, start with the depository used by your account. If you do not know which depository issues your statement, check an earlier CAS or ask your DP (depository participant); the earlier-opened demat account generally determines the issuing depository when you have both NSDL and CDSL accounts.

Download an NSDL e-CAS
NSDL’s CAS service is the direct route when NSDL is the issuing depository or when you need a duplicate of a statement already generated.
- Open the official NSDL CAS page at nsdlcas.nsdl.com.
- Enter your CAS ID and PAN when your CAS ID is available.
- If you do not know the CAS ID, use the lookup on that page with your PAN, DP name, DP ID and client ID. Enter the identifiers exactly as shown in your demat records.
- Submit the request and select the statement period or statement available for download.
- Save the e-CAS PDF to a secure location and keep the original file unchanged for reconciliation.
For an existing statement or duplicate, register for NSDL IDeAS at eservices.nsdl.com. NSDL also lists SPEED-e as an access route. After signing in, open the statement area and download the available e-CAS.
If the NSDL lookup does not find your account
- Check that the PAN belongs to the first or sole holder, not another joint holder.
- Compare the DP name, DP ID and client ID with the account-opening or broker records; a single wrong digit can prevent a match.
- Check whether the statement period you selected is one for which a CAS was generated. A no-transaction account may follow the half-yearly rather than monthly cycle.
- If the details are correct and the statement is still unavailable, contact your DP or NSDL through the official support or CAS-feedback route.
Download a CDSL CAS
Use the CDSL CAS facility when CDSL is the relevant issuing depository or when the CDSL portal is the route provided for your statement.
- Open the CAS facility from cdslindia.com.
- Enter the PAN, the 16-digit demat account number, date of birth and the one-time password requested by the service.
- After authentication, choose the statement period you need.
- Download the PDF or request it by email, depending on the option shown.
- For a statement that was already dispatched, open the CAS tab; CDSL says dispatched statements remain available there for download.
Use the full 16-digit demat account number, including leading digits if they are displayed in your records. If the OTP does not arrive, confirm that the registered mobile number and email are current with your DP before repeating the request.

They do not turn a mutual-fund-only statement into a complete securities record. Shares, bonds, government securities, NPS holdings or other instruments in a demat account require the depository CAS or the relevant account statement. If you hold both mutual funds and demat securities, use the depository CAS for the combined picture and use the registrar service to investigate a fund-specific data issue.
Open the password-protected PDF
NSDL says its e-CAS is a digitally signed, password-protected PDF. The password is the PAN of the first or sole holder, entered in capital letters. For example, if the first holder’s PAN is shown as ABCDE1234F, enter ABCDE1234F, not a joint holder’s PAN and not a version with lower-case letters.
- Download the file again from the official NSDL or CDSL portal if the first attempt fails.
- Open the newly downloaded file in a current PDF reader and enter the first-holder PAN in capital letters.
- Check that the file name and statement period correspond to the request you made.
- If the PDF remains inaccessible, contact the depository or your DP. Do not upload the statement to an untrusted PDF-unlocking website; doing so could expose PAN, account numbers and transaction data.
A digital signature helps establish that the electronic document came from the issuing service and has not been altered after signing. Retain the downloaded original rather than relying only on a printout.
Read your CAS in the right order
1. Confirm identity and scope
Start with the first-holder name, PAN, holding pattern, statement period and the DP or demat identifiers shown in the opening pages. Check whether the statement is single-holder, joint-holder or another permitted pattern. A mismatch here can explain why an expected folio or account is absent.
List every demat account and mutual-fund folio that should be included. The list is your scope check: you can then distinguish a genuine missing account from a statement that was never meant to include it.
2. Read the portfolio summary
The portfolio section groups holdings by asset or investment and may show the quantity or units, the stated price, aggregate portfolio value and a value-change graph. Note the valuation date and whether the number is based on closing holdings for the statement period.

For each demat account and mutual-fund folio, compare the closing balance displayed in the summary with the detailed holding pages. NSDL’s investor guidance specifically directs readers to check the statement period and closing balance for every demat account and mutual-fund folio.
3. Check demat holdings line by line
For equity, bonds, government securities, NPS or other listed demat instruments, verify the security description, quantity and closing balance. Compare corporate-action credits, transfers, pledges, debits or other events with broker or DP records for the same period.
- A buy should normally appear as a credit after settlement, while a sale should be reflected as a debit or reduced balance.
- A transfer between demat accounts should be visible in the relevant transaction details and should not be counted as a market purchase.
- A corporate action can change quantity, security identity or both; retain the issuer or DP notice when reconciling the resulting balance.
The CAS is a consolidated record, so the transaction date and settlement date may differ from the date on a broker order screen. Use the transaction references and dates printed in the statement when matching records.
4. Check mutual-fund details
Review the folio number, scheme name, plan or option where shown, units, valuation and transaction entries. Check KYC and contact fields displayed in the statement, especially after changing an address, email or mobile number.
Match purchases, switches, redemptions, systematic transactions, dividends or other listed events against the fund’s account statement. If a folio appears with an incorrect name, address, KYC status, unit balance or valuation, the mutual-fund company or its registrar is the appropriate party to correct the source data.

Use the closing quantity or unit balance as the bridge to the next period. The next CAS should generally open with the prior closing balance after allowing for documented transactions and corporate actions. Investigate a difference instead of silently carrying it forward.

A simple reconciliation worksheet can have one row per security or folio and columns for prior closing balance, additions, reductions, corporate-action adjustment, current closing balance and the supporting reference. Keep the CAS PDF and the matching broker, DP or fund records together.
What to do when a holding or transaction is missing
First, rule out a consolidation mismatch
- Confirm the PAN printed in the CAS is the PAN of the first or sole holder for the missing account or folio.
- Compare the first-holder name and holding pattern, including the order of joint holders.
- Check the statement period and the expected delivery cycle. A no-transaction account may not produce a monthly statement.
- Check whether the missing investment is held in demat form or as mutual-fund SOA units; the relevant record may be in a different section.
For a missing demat account or incorrect demat transaction
Contact the DP promptly with the CAS PDF, account number, transaction date, quantity and broker or DP reference. Ask the DP to verify the PAN mapping, account linkage and transaction reporting. If the issue is not resolved, use the CAS-feedback or support route provided by the depository and retain copies of every submission.
For a missing or incorrect mutual-fund folio
Contact the mutual-fund company or its registrar with the folio number, PAN, statement period and the transaction confirmation. Registrar records may need correction even when the depository portion of the CAS is accurate. Keep the CAS, fund account statement, transaction confirmation and correspondence until the corrected entry appears.
For a statement that never arrived
Check spam or filtered email folders, the registered email address, the depository’s online statement area and the applicable delivery cycle. Request a duplicate through the NSDL CAS or IDeAS route, or through the CDSL CAS tab, rather than relying on an attachment forwarded by someone else.
Keep the CAS secure and useful
- Store the original digitally signed PDF in an encrypted or access-controlled location.
- Use a consistent file name containing the issuer, statement period and download date, but do not rename the original if your record-keeping system needs the original file name for signature validation.
- Do not email an unlocked copy casually; the document can expose PAN, demat identifiers, folio numbers and transaction history.
- Retain the supporting contract notes, fund statements, DP communications and corporate-action notices needed to explain any balance change.
- Review every statement you receive, even when there was no trade. An unexpected credit, debit or contact-detail change can be easier to correct when reported promptly.
CAS checks you can complete in one sitting
- Verify first-holder name, PAN and holding pattern.
- Confirm the statement period and issuing depository.
- List every expected demat account and mutual-fund folio.
- Compare each opening and closing balance with the prior statement.
- Match every transaction to a broker, DP or fund record.
- Review mutual-fund KYC and contact fields.
- Save the original PDF and record any discrepancy reference number.
Following this order turns the CAS into a practical control document: it shows what was held, what changed, which source record supports the change and which institution must correct an error.
