Do not make a one-day decision to sell everything. First measure how much of your portfolio depends on Chinese artificial-intelligence companies, China generally, technology and semiconductor growth, the renminbi or Hong Kong dollar, and the same regulatory and geopolitical risks. Then set a maximum exposure that fits your time horizon, cash needs and tolerance for loss. If your current position exceeds that limit, reduce it through a planned rebalance and redirect the money to genuinely broader assets—such as global funds, non-China sectors, high-quality bonds and cash reserves—rather than replacing one narrow technology theme with another.
Diversification is “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk,” according to Investor.gov. It cannot prevent a loss, but it can stop one country, industry or issuer from determining your entire result.

Why a fall in Chinese AI stocks can hit several parts of a portfolio at once
Chinese AI shares can create overlapping concentrations. A holding may be exposed to a single country, one fast-moving industry, a small group of issuers, a foreign currency, a particular exchange or legal structure, and a common regulatory regime. Owning several funds does not remove those overlaps if the funds hold many of the same companies.
The 2025 filing for the Themes China Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF describes concentration risk and warns that a focused fund may be more volatile than a broader fund. It identifies risks including rapid technological change, short product cycles, heavy research spending, cyberattacks and possible increased scrutiny of data practices. A 2026 filing for the China AI Labs Ecosystem ETF says the fund is non-diversified and can place a greater percentage of assets in a small number of issuers. It warns that the fund may underperform broader equity markets, other technology-focused investments or other China-focused investments when Chinese AI companies are out of favor or market sentiment turns negative.

Those risks can interact. A regulatory announcement can pressure several companies simultaneously; a technology shock can reduce valuations across the sector; and a weaker renminbi can reduce a foreign investor’s return even if the local share price is unchanged. A portfolio that looks diversified by ticker count may therefore remain highly correlated in a sell-off.
Step 1: Map your actual China-AI exposure
List direct positions
Record every individual Chinese AI, cloud, internet, chip, robotics or data-platform company you own. Note the market value, cost basis, listing venue, currency, voting or depositary structure and the percentage of your total portfolio represented by each position. Include shares held in taxable accounts, retirement accounts and employer plans.
Look through every fund
Download the latest holdings and factsheets for technology, semiconductor, emerging-market, China, Asia-Pacific and thematic funds. Add the indirect exposure to the direct positions you already listed. Check the top-ten holdings, country weights and sector classification rather than relying on a fund’s name. Investor.gov cautions that a mutual fund or ETF will not necessarily provide diversification when it is narrowly focused, such as on one industry sector.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure the other concentrations
- Issuer: calculate the percentage in your largest company and the combined percentage in the top five and top ten.
- Country and region: separate mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other markets; a broad emerging-market label may still contain a substantial China allocation.
- Theme and sector: identify exposure to AI, semiconductors, internet platforms, hardware, data centers and other businesses that may respond to the same growth or policy shock.
- Currency: record renminbi, Hong Kong dollar and U.S.-dollar exposure, and whether the fund hedges currency.
- Jurisdiction and structure: note the exchange, depositary arrangement, fund domicile, capital-control implications and investor protections.
- Economic sensitivity: estimate how much of the portfolio depends on high-growth valuations, Chinese domestic demand, government procurement or access to advanced chips.
A simple spreadsheet can show the result. For each security, multiply its portfolio weight by its China, AI and issuer exposure, then add overlapping amounts across funds. The calculation is an estimate, not a promise of how a fund will behave, but it reveals concentrations that a ticker-by-ticker review misses.

Step 2: Set a personal maximum instead of copying a “safe” percentage
There is no universally valid safe allocation to Chinese AI stocks. Investor.gov and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission state that asset allocation depends on personal circumstances, including time horizon and risk tolerance.
Match the limit to your time horizon
- Money needed within a few years: a large allocation to volatile thematic shares can jeopardize a known withdrawal date. Prioritize liquidity and capital stability.
- Long-term retirement money: you may be able to tolerate more equity volatility, but a long horizon does not make a single-country or single-theme concentration prudent by itself.
- Flexible, long-term capital: a small satellite position may be acceptable if you can withstand a prolonged drawdown and still meet every financial obligation.
Account for loss capacity and behavior
Ask how much of the portfolio you could lose without selling at a forced or emotionally driven time. Include emergency savings, debt payments, insurance needs and upcoming purchases. Also consider whether a 40% or 60% decline would cause you to abandon your plan. A theoretical risk tolerance that disappears in a bear market is not a workable allocation.
Write the rule before the next shock
Define a maximum China-AI exposure and a broader maximum for all China-linked assets. You can also set a single-issuer ceiling and a top-ten ceiling. The exact numbers are personal; the important feature is that the rule is written before prices move. Leave room for ordinary market drift so that you do not trade on every daily fluctuation.
Step 3: Choose diversifiers that are actually different
The objective is not to exchange one concentrated technology bet for another. Compare each destination by breadth, likely correlation, liquidity, currency, cost, tax and governance.

| Destination | What it can diversify | Risks that remain | Checks before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad global equity fund | Country, sector and issuer concentration | Global equity losses, valuation risk and currency movements | Country weights, top-ten concentration, expense ratio, index rules and trading spread |
| Regional or developed-market fund excluding China | China-specific policy, market-access and domestic-demand risk | Regional recessions, technology overlap and foreign-currency risk | Actual China weight, sector overlap with your existing holdings and domicile |
| Non-China sectors | Some China-AI and semiconductor correlation | Sector-specific cycles; many “innovation” funds still own similar growth companies | Holdings, revenue geography, valuation sensitivity and concentration |
| High-quality government or investment-grade bonds | Equity volatility and some growth-stock valuation risk | Interest-rate, inflation, reinvestment and duration risk | Credit quality, duration, maturity, yield, liquidity and currency |
| Cash or short-term instruments | Near-term spending and forced-sale risk | Inflation and lower long-term returns | Access, deposit or issuer protections, rate reset and tax treatment |
Broad equity is not automatically low risk
A global fund can still be dominated by a handful of large technology companies. Inspect the top-ten share and sector weights. A fund with hundreds of securities may remain narrow if most assets sit in one country, industry or mega-cap group.
Bonds diversify a different risk, not every risk
High-quality bonds often behave differently from speculative equities, but they can fall when interest rates rise. Longer duration creates more price sensitivity; lower-quality credit can move with equities during a stress event. Match duration and currency to the date you need the money rather than buying bonds solely because a label says “fixed income.”
Cash is a risk-management tool
Cash reserves can prevent you from selling a depressed position to pay an upcoming bill. They are not a complete long-term portfolio, because inflation can reduce purchasing power, but they are useful for emergency funds and near-term liabilities.
Step 4: Rebalance in a controlled sequence
- Freeze new concentration. Stop automatic contributions or reinvestment that would increase Chinese AI or overlapping technology exposure while you assess the portfolio.
- Calculate the excess. Compare current weights with the limits you wrote. Separate a one-off price decline from a change in your long-term objective.
- Choose a schedule or band. Investor.gov explains that rebalancing is often done infrequently or when preset thresholds are crossed. A calendar date or percentage band reduces the temptation to trade on headlines.
- Decide what to sell first. Consider the most concentrated issuer, the fund with the greatest overlap, positions whose risk no longer fits your plan, and holdings that create an unacceptable tax bill or liquidity problem.
- Direct proceeds to distinct exposures. Use broad funds, non-China assets, high-quality bonds or cash according to the role each asset must play. Do not buy another AI or semiconductor theme merely because it has a different country label.
- Use staged trades when appropriate. Splitting a planned reduction into several dates can limit timing risk, but it does not guarantee a better price. Keep the end-state allocation and deadline explicit so “staging” does not become indefinite inaction.
- Reinvest deliberately. Check dividend and capital-gain settings so distributions do not quietly rebuild the concentration you just reduced.
- Document the transaction. Save the reason, target weights, tax estimate and next review date. A written record helps distinguish a rules-based rebalance from a reaction to social-media forecasts.
What to compare before selecting a fund or ETF
Two funds with similar names can have very different risks. Use the current prospectus, holdings file and exchange data.

| Dimension | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Breadth | How many countries, sectors and issuers are included? What percentage is in the top ten? |
| Correlation | Could the fund fall for the same China-tech, semiconductor, global-growth or regulatory shock already affecting your portfolio? |
| Liquidity | What are normal trading volume and bid-ask spreads? Can you access the money when markets are stressed? |
| Currency and listing | Which currencies and exchanges are involved? Is currency hedging used, and what are the costs and limitations? |
| Fees and taxes | What is the expense ratio, turnover, withholding treatment and likely realized-gain consequence of the switch? |
| Governance | How is the index constructed and rebalanced? Are holdings and methodology disclosed clearly? |
| Legal protections | Where is the fund domiciled, what regulations apply, and what investor eligibility or capital-control restrictions exist? |
Turnover deserves context. The 2026 U.S. SEC filing for the Themes China Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF reports 16% portfolio turnover for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2025. That is a fund-specific historical figure, not a recommended turnover rate or a forecast for future tax costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the market has already fallen: sell, hold or rebalance?
Sell when the exposure violates your plan
A price decline does not by itself prove that the investment is worthless or that a rebound is imminent. Selling or trimming is rational when the position exceeds your written risk limit, the money is needed soon, your thesis or objective changed, or the loss would impair your ability to meet obligations. Use the same criteria you would have used before the decline.
Hold when the position still fits and you can tolerate the risk
If the allocation remains within your limit, the investment still serves its intended role and you have sufficient liquidity elsewhere, holding can avoid turning a temporary price move into a permanent realized loss. Holding is not the same as adding; keep monitoring overlap and concentration.

Rebalance rather than forecast a bottom
A planned rebalance sells enough to restore your target mix and buys the assets that are underweight. It does not require predicting the next policy announcement, earnings report or market low. If tax or liquidity constraints make an immediate trade unsuitable, record a date or threshold for the next review and use new contributions to move gradually toward the target.

Tax, account and execution issues
- Taxable accounts: estimate capital gains, loss-harvesting opportunities, holding periods and local wash-sale or equivalent rules before selling. Tax treatment varies by country and account type.
- Retirement accounts: trades may have different immediate tax consequences, but fund expenses, trading spreads and withdrawal rules still matter.
- Currency conversion: a sale in one currency followed by a purchase in another can create conversion costs and additional exchange-rate exposure.
- Trading conditions: use limit orders only when you understand the trade-off between price control and execution risk. Check spreads and market hours for foreign listings.
- Liquidity reserve: keep emergency and near-term spending money outside volatile investments so a further fall cannot force a sale.
- Professional advice: cross-border taxation, restricted securities and complex derivatives may require a licensed adviser in your jurisdiction.
China-specific access and policy context
The Shanghai Stock Exchange states that qualified foreign investors may access stocks, depositary receipts, bonds, bond repos, asset-backed securities and specified derivatives under its rules. It also says ETF options became accessible to qualified foreign investors for hedging purposes from October 9, 2025. These permissions do not apply uniformly to retail investors in every country and are not a recommendation to use derivatives.
A Chinese State Council opinion dated April 16, 2024 calls for stronger capital-market risk oversight and an expedited approval channel for exchange-traded index funds. Policy support can affect market structure and liquidity, but it is context rather than protection against losses. Check current eligibility, product rules and local regulation before acting.
Mistakes that undermine diversification
- Counting tickers instead of exposures: five funds can own the same companies.
- Replacing China AI with another narrow theme: a different label does not guarantee different economic drivers.
- Using a universal percentage: an allocation suitable for one investor may be reckless for another.
- Ignoring currency and jurisdiction: local-market performance may not equal your home-currency return.
- Trading from a headline: a single day’s move cannot establish a long-term allocation.
- Forgetting taxes and spreads: a theoretically better mix can be costly to implement.
- Letting distributions rebuild the position: automatic reinvestment can undo a rebalance.
- Assuming policy support eliminates risk: regulation, technology changes and sentiment can still produce large losses.
A practical review checklist
- Have you included direct shares and every fund’s current holdings?
- What are your China, China-AI, technology, semiconductor, currency and single-issuer percentages?
- What maximums and rebalancing bands fit your time horizon and loss capacity?
- Does each proposed diversifier differ by country, sector, issuer and likely shock?
- Have you checked duration and credit quality for bonds, and liquidity for every holding?
- What are the expense ratio, turnover, spread, withholding and realized-gain consequences?
- Are the fund’s domicile, listing venue, investor eligibility and protections suitable?
- When is the next scheduled review, and what exact event would trigger an earlier one?
Frequently asked questions
Should I sell all my Chinese AI shares after a crash?
Not automatically. Sell or trim when the exposure exceeds your written limit, your objective changed, or you need the money; otherwise a rules-based hold or rebalance may be more appropriate than an all-or-nothing reaction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can a broad emerging-market ETF offset China-AI risk?
Only partly. Inspect its actual China and technology weights and top holdings. A fund marketed as broad can still have substantial exposure to the same companies or economic drivers.
Are government bonds guaranteed to rise when Chinese AI stocks fall?
No. High-quality bonds may diversify equity risk, but prices can decline when interest rates rise, and credit-sensitive bonds may fall alongside equities. Duration, credit quality and currency determine the behavior.
How often should I rebalance?
Use a calendar interval or preset percentage band that you can follow consistently. Investor.gov notes that rebalancing is often infrequent or triggered by thresholds; the appropriate schedule depends on your costs, taxes and circumstances.
Can foreign investors hedge China exposure with Shanghai-listed ETF options?
The Shanghai Stock Exchange says qualified foreign investors could access ETF options for hedging purposes from October 9, 2025, subject to its rules. Eligibility is not uniform for retail investors, and derivatives introduce liquidity, margin and loss risks.
