The right choice depends on whether you want broad developed-Europe exposure, a narrower country or eurozone tilt, a sector or factor bet, or a wider non-U.S. allocation. Start with your existing holdings, inspect the ETF’s index and actual exposures, then set a target and rebalancing rule instead of chasing whichever region recently performed best.
What the S&P 500 already gives you
The S&P 500 is a U.S. large-cap equity benchmark. The Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF prospectus describes a passive fund designed to track an index representing 500 companies across major industries and the broad domestic economy. That is substantial diversification within the United States, but it is not a complete global portfolio.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Holding an S&P 500 ETF leaves several forms of concentration:
- Country concentration: the companies are based in the United States.
- Company-size concentration: the benchmark focuses on large companies, so it does not deliberately represent smaller firms.
- Equity concentration: the fund is exposed to stock-market losses rather than bonds or other asset classes.
- Currency concentration: the underlying businesses primarily report and earn in U.S.-dollar-linked markets, even if your ETF trades in another currency.
A European ETF addresses mainly the first point and, depending on its index, may add different company sizes and industries. It does not by itself diversify you away from equities, guarantee lower volatility, or protect your capital in a market decline.

What “diversifying beyond the S&P 500” can mean
Before selecting a fund, identify the type of concentration you are trying to change. These are different objectives and can lead to different products:
- Reduce U.S. country concentration: add European, broader international, or global ex-U.S. equities.
- Reduce large-cap concentration: add small- or mid-cap funds, whether in the United States or abroad.
- Add emerging markets: use an emerging-market or all-world approach rather than assuming Europe includes them.
- Add another asset class: use bonds, cash, or other assets if your main concern is total portfolio volatility.
- Make a Europe tilt: deliberately hold more European companies than a neutral global allocation would provide.
The title’s Europe route is appropriate when the final objective is intentional European exposure. If your real goal is simply “less United States,” a broad international or global ex-U.S. ETF may spread that allocation across more regions and avoid making Europe an unintended single-region bet.
What a European ETF can add—and what it cannot
Geographic and economic diversification
A broad Europe fund owns companies headquartered across several European countries. Their revenues, regulations, interest-rate environments and economic cycles are not identical to those of U.S. companies. That can make the return pattern of the combined portfolio different from an S&P 500-only portfolio.

Different does not mean reliably better. Europe can lag the United States for extended periods, and a regional allocation can fall at the same time as U.S. stocks. International diversification guidance from Vanguard emphasizes that diversification may improve the range of opportunities but cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Potentially different sector and company exposures
European indexes can have different industry weights from a U.S. large-cap index. A broad regional fund may therefore change your exposure to financials, industrial companies, health care, consumer businesses, energy and other sectors. The effect depends on the index methodology and current holdings; never infer it from the word “Europe” alone.
Currency exposure
If your home currency is the U.S. dollar, pound, euro or another currency, the value of European holdings will be affected by exchange rates as well as share prices. An ETF that trades in euros can still own companies earning revenue in pounds, Swiss francs, Swedish kronor or other currencies. The trading currency is the currency used to buy and sell the shares; it is not a guarantee that the underlying currency risk has been removed.

Read the fund documents to see whether the share class is currency-hedged. Hedging can reduce some exchange-rate movement relative to your chosen reference currency, but it introduces its own costs and does not eliminate equity or regional risk.

Broadness should be decided before looking at recent performance. Official S&P Dow Jones Indices material distinguishes broad European measures from specialized strategies, while Vanguard notes that similarly named ETFs can follow different indexes and offer different diversification.
| Route | Geographic breadth | Typical construction | Concentration to expect | Possible portfolio role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad Europe or developed Europe | Several European countries, usually developed markets covered by the index | Often market-cap based, though methodology varies | More diversified than a country or sector fund, but still subject to regional and index concentration | Core European allocation when the goal is broad regional exposure |
| Eurozone | Countries using the euro, excluding eligible European markets outside the currency union | Index rules determine country and company eligibility | Greater dependence on a smaller country set and the euro-area economic cycle | Targeted euro-area or euro-currency objective |
| Single country | One national market | Country index, sometimes with large-cap or dividend screens | High dependence on that country’s companies, sectors, politics and currency | Satellite position based on a specific thesis, not an automatic core holding |
| European sector, factor or thematic | Companies selected from one region but filtered by industry, style or theme | Sector, value, quality, momentum, dividend or thematic methodology | Can be highly concentrated in a few industries or names | Small satellite tilt after a broad regional core is established |
| Global ex-U.S. or broad international | Multiple non-U.S. regions, potentially including Europe, Pacific markets and emerging markets | Global or international index with stated country rules | Less concentrated in Europe, but Europe may be a smaller part of the total | General reduction in U.S. concentration without a deliberate Europe overweight |
“Broad” is not a guarantee of equal country or company weights. A market-cap-weighted fund can still be dominated by its largest markets and companies. Check the current factsheet rather than assuming that every country has a meaningful allocation.
Do not confuse a European listing with European exposure
An ETF can be listed on a European exchange while investing in U.S., global or emerging-market companies. Conversely, a fund listed outside Europe can hold European companies. Listing venue, fund domicile, trading currency and underlying exposure are separate facts.
For every candidate, record:
- the index name and methodology;
- the countries and companies eligible for inclusion;
- the fund domicile and whether it is a UCITS fund;
- the exchange listing and trading currency;
- the share class, including distributing or accumulating treatment;
- whether currency hedging is used; and
- whether your brokerage account and jurisdiction permit the purchase.
These details determine what you actually own and how the position behaves. A familiar ticker or a European-sounding fund name is not sufficient evidence.
How to compare a Europe ETF with your existing funds
1. Map your current portfolio
List the S&P 500 fund, every global or international fund, workplace plan holding, and any individual shares. For each, note the index, top holdings, country weights and sector weights. Looking only at account labels can hide substantial duplication.

2. Measure overlap by holdings and index rules
Compare the candidate’s holdings with those of your existing funds. Look at the largest positions, the percentage represented by the top 10 companies, country allocations and sector allocations. Two ETFs with different names may own many of the same companies; adding the second may increase the weight of those companies rather than diversify you.
Also compare index methodology. One fund may include only developed Europe, another may include smaller companies, and another may apply dividend, value or volatility screens. The methodology explains differences that a ticker comparison cannot.
3. Assess concentration before buying
Ask whether the candidate is diversified enough for its intended role. A country, sector, factor or thematic fund can have a narrow set of holdings even when its legal structure is an ETF. If a small number of companies or one industry would determine most of the result, treat it as a satellite position and size it according to your own risk capacity rather than as a substitute for a broad regional fund.

4. Check currency and hedging
Identify the currencies of the underlying companies and whether the share class hedges them. Compare that with the currency in which you expect to spend the money. Do not assume that buying an accumulating share class, using a euro listing or converting your account balance changes the underlying economic exposure.
5. Verify fund structure and access
Confirm UCITS status, domicile, distribution policy, fund size, trading venue and eligibility for your account. Availability can differ by country, broker and account type, and these conditions can change.
Costs that matter beyond the headline expense ratio
The ongoing fund charge is only one part of the cost. Vanguard ETF guidance identifies commissions and bid-offer spreads as costs investors should consider, and tracking difference shows how closely the fund has actually followed its index after expenses and implementation effects.

| Cost or friction | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing fund expenses | The current expense ratio or ongoing charge in the factsheet | Deducted within the fund and incurred while you hold it |
| Bid-offer spread | The difference between the price available to buy and sell on your venue | Paid implicitly when trading; can widen when liquidity is lower or markets are stressed |
| Brokerage commission | Your account’s per-trade or percentage charge | Especially important for small, frequent purchases |
| Currency conversion | Broker markup or fee when converting into the listing currency | Can materially affect returns for repeated purchases or sales |
| Tracking difference | Historical gap between the fund and its stated index, after costs | Shows implementation results rather than relying only on the published expense ratio |
| Tax and withholding | Rules for your residence, account wrapper, fund domicile and distributions | Tax treatment is jurisdiction-specific and can change; it may dominate small fee differences |
Compare like with like: the same share-class policy, currency-hedging approach, exchange and account type. A fund with a slightly lower ongoing charge may still be more expensive for you if its spread, conversion cost or access conditions are less favorable.
A practical implementation sequence
- Inventory your exposure. Download or record the current holdings, indexes, country weights and sector weights for your S&P 500 and other funds.
- Write the purpose in one sentence. Examples include reducing U.S. concentration, adding a Europe tilt, diversifying currencies, or building a broader non-U.S. allocation. If the purpose is unclear, postpone the purchase.
- Choose the breadth level. Decide between broad Europe, eurozone, one country, a specialized strategy or global ex-U.S. before reviewing performance charts.
- Read the primary documents. Check the index methodology, holdings, country and sector weights, domicile, UCITS status, share class, hedging policy, liquidity and all stated costs.
- Run an overlap check. Estimate how the purchase changes your look-through exposure to companies, countries and sectors. A different fund name is not proof of a different risk.
- Set a target range and rule. Choose the intended portfolio range and decide in advance when you will rebalance. A rule based on a calendar or a stated threshold is more consistent than reacting to recent returns.
- Place trades through an eligible broker. Confirm that the listing, fund structure and account are available in your jurisdiction, then review the live spread, commission and currency-conversion cost before submitting an order.
- Document the decision. Save the fund documents, your target, the reason for the allocation and the next review date. This record helps you distinguish a planned rebalance from performance-driven trading.
How to set an allocation without a universal percentage
There is no defensible Europe percentage for every reader. The appropriate range depends on your country, tax wrapper, time horizon, spending currency, existing international exposure, income stability and tolerance for losses. A person already holding a global fund may need only a small tilt to change the portfolio; a person holding only U.S. stocks may have a different objective.
Use a decision framework instead of a formula:
- Core versus satellite: use a broad Europe or global ex-U.S. fund for a core allocation; reserve country, sector, factor and thematic funds for deliberate satellites.
- Neutral exposure versus active tilt: decide whether you want Europe roughly in line with a broad non-U.S. benchmark or intentionally above that weight.
- Risk budget: make sure the potential drawdown of the new allocation fits your ability and willingness to stay invested.
- Currency objective: determine whether unhedged currency movement is acceptable or whether a hedged share class better matches your liabilities.
- Maintenance capacity: choose an allocation you can monitor and rebalance without frequent discretionary trades.
This process is educational, not individualized investment advice. A regulated adviser or tax professional can assess circumstances that a general article cannot.
Rebalancing and maintenance
Once the target is chosen, write down how you will maintain it. You might review on a fixed schedule, use a tolerance band around the target, or direct new contributions toward whichever holding is below target. The important feature is that the rule is defined before a region has a dramatic rally or decline.
At each review, check whether the fund still follows the intended index, whether country or sector weights have changed materially, whether the share class remains suitable, and whether your broker still provides acceptable access and trading costs. Rebalancing can create commissions, spreads, currency-conversion costs and taxable events, so account for those frictions before trading.

Do not change the allocation solely because Europe recently outperformed or underperformed the S&P 500. Past regional leadership does not establish what will happen next, and frequent switches can turn a diversification plan into performance chasing.

Risks specific to adding Europe
Regional underperformance
European stocks may trail U.S. stocks for long periods. A Europe allocation can reduce reliance on one market while lowering returns relative to an S&P 500-only portfolio during a U.S.-led cycle.
Currency movements
Exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce returns measured in your home currency. Hedged and unhedged share classes behave differently, and neither removes the risk of falling share prices.
Country, political and regulatory risk
European markets are subject to country-specific elections, regulation, fiscal conditions and trade relationships. A broad fund spreads these risks across countries but does not eliminate them.
Sector and company concentration
Some European indexes are heavily weighted toward particular industries or the largest companies. A specialized fund can magnify that concentration. Read the holdings rather than assuming “Europe” means balanced exposure.
Liquidity and trading conditions
Bid-offer spreads and execution quality can change with market hours, exchange liquidity and market stress. Use the actual spread and trading venue available to you, not a generic cost assumption.
Tax uncertainty
Tax treatment varies by residence, account type, fund domicile, distributions and local rules. Guidance that applies in the United States may not apply in the United Kingdom, the European Union or another jurisdiction. Check current local guidance or consult a qualified professional before acting.
Questions to answer before you buy
- What exact exposure is missing from my current portfolio?
- Does this fund invest in Europe, or is it merely listed on a European exchange?
- Which index does it track, and how are companies and countries selected?
- How much of my combined portfolio would the largest companies and sectors represent?
- How much overlap exists with my S&P 500, global or international funds?
- Is the share class accumulating or distributing, and is it hedged?
- What are the ongoing charge, spread, commission, conversion cost and tracking difference?
- Is the fund eligible for my account and jurisdiction, and what tax rules apply?
- What target range and rebalancing rule will I follow?
- Can I hold through a period when Europe underperforms the United States?
Choosing between a Europe ETF and a broader non-U.S. fund
Choose broad Europe when your stated objective is a deliberate European allocation and you accept the resulting regional and currency risks. Choose global ex-U.S. or broad international exposure when your objective is simply to reduce U.S. concentration across several regions. Choose a country, sector, factor or thematic fund only when you can explain the specific thesis, concentration and exit rule in advance.
In every case, the decision should come from the role the fund plays in the whole portfolio, not from a memorable ticker, a recent return chart or the assumption that one region is inherently safer or cheaper.
