You can reduce dependence on AI stocks without giving up a growth-oriented portfolio by diversifying the sources of growth: add industries outside technology, vary company sizes and investment styles, include international markets, and decide whether bonds or cash fit your ability to tolerate losses. The objective is not to predict which theme wins next or to eliminate losses. It is to prevent one sector, group of companies, or economic scenario from determining your entire result. Your allocation should follow your goals, time horizon, and capacity and willingness to withstand declines, not a forecast about the latest winning sector.
What does diversifying beyond AI stocks actually mean?
Diversification means spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov guide, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing, defines it this way: “The practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk is known as diversification.”

For an AI-heavy portfolio, diversification has two separate jobs:
- Spread exposure across asset classes. Stocks, bonds and cash respond differently to economic conditions. A portfolio made entirely of stocks can be diversified by sector and geography, but it still bears broad stock-market risk.
- Spread exposure within each asset class. Within equities, that means avoiding dependence on one technology theme by using several industries, company sizes, investment styles and regions.
Diversification reduces reliance on a single holding or segment; it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent every loss. A broad portfolio may still fall during a market-wide sell-off and can trail a concentrated AI position during a period when AI-related companies lead.

How do I find out how concentrated my portfolio is?
Start with the holdings underneath each fund or account, not the fund names alone. A fund labeled “technology,” “innovation” or “AI” can be narrow, and several funds can own the same large companies even when their names look different.
- List every holding and its weight. Export the current holdings of each fund, plus individual shares and employer plans. Record the percentage of the total portfolio represented by each company.
- Group holdings by sector. Identify technology and communication-services exposure, as well as businesses whose revenue is closely tied to AI hardware, cloud infrastructure, data centers, software or related services.
- Look for repeated companies. Add together the weight of a company that appears in multiple funds. A broad index fund and a technology fund may both own the same large technology companies.
- Check geographic and size exposure. Note how much is in domestic versus international companies, and in large-, mid- and small-cap stocks.
- Record the asset-class mix. Separate equities from bonds and cash so you know whether the portfolio is diversified only inside stocks or also across asset classes.
The available guidance supports checking fund holdings and sector breadth, but it does not establish a current, universal percentage for how much of any reader’s portfolio is “AI.” Your own look-through calculation is therefore more useful than an index headline or a guessed concentration statistic.

What should I add to a portfolio that is heavy in AI stocks?
Add exposures that depend on different businesses, market environments and return drivers. No addition guarantees outperformance; the point is to make the portfolio less dependent on one theme.
Broaden across industries
Consider sectors beyond technology and communication services, such as health care, financials, industrials, consumer businesses, energy, utilities and real estate. The economic drivers differ: a bank’s results depend on credit and interest rates, while a utility is influenced by regulation and demand for essential services. Sector diversification can reduce the impact of a problem specific to AI supply chains or technology valuations, but sectors can still decline together during a broad recession or market shock.
Vary company size
Large companies may dominate AI indexes. Adding mid-cap and small-cap exposure changes the mix of business models and development stages. Smaller companies can have more room to expand, but their shares may be less liquid and more volatile than those of established large companies.
Balance growth with value
Growth stocks are priced for expectations of faster sales or earnings expansion. Value-oriented companies generally have lower prices relative to measures such as earnings or book value. Their leadership can alternate as interest rates, economic growth and investor preferences change. Adding value exposure does not make it a guaranteed hedge; value stocks carry their own business and market risks.

Include other regions
International equities expose you to different economies, industries, currencies and market valuations. Developed and emerging markets can behave differently from the U.S., although foreign markets also bring currency, political, regulatory and liquidity risks. International exposure should be evaluated by its underlying countries and sectors rather than treated as automatically independent of domestic technology stocks.
| Diversification source | What it changes | Risks and trade-offs to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Other sectors | Revenue and profit drivers outside AI and technology | Sectors can still move together in a market-wide decline |
| Mid- and small-cap stocks | Company size, business maturity and growth paths | Greater volatility and potentially lower liquidity |
| Value-oriented equities | Valuation and style exposure rather than only high-growth expectations | Value can lag for long periods and companies may face fundamental problems |
| International equities | Different economies, currencies, industries and market valuations | Currency, political, regulatory and market-structure risks |
| Bonds or cash | Asset-class diversification and potential stability | Lower expected long-run return than stocks, plus interest-rate, credit or inflation risk |
How much of my portfolio should be in AI stocks?
There is no evidence-based percentage that fits every investor, and the supplied primary sources do not provide an AI-specific limit. Set a target allocation from your goals and risk capacity, then treat AI exposure as one component of that plan rather than as a prediction about the next market leader.
Ask three questions before choosing a ceiling:
- When will you need the money? A near-term spending goal has less time to recover from a severe decline than a retirement goal decades away.
- Can your finances absorb a loss? Stable income, emergency savings and other assets affect your ability to remain invested during a downturn.
- Will you remain invested during a loss? An allocation is unsuitable if a large decline would cause you to sell in panic, regardless of its historical appeal.
The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says that, as a rule of thumb for experienced investors seeking higher potential returns, high-risk investments should be limited to 10% of a portfolio. The FCA page was last updated 16 May 2025. This is general U.K. consumer guidance, not an AI-specific allocation, individualized advice or a universal regulator requirement. It should not be transplanted mechanically to another country or to a different risk profile.
Should I add bonds or cash to keep growth potential?
Bonds can moderate volatility and add stability, but they generally offer lower expected long-run returns than stocks. Whether they belong in your portfolio, and in what amount, depends on your time horizon, goals and ability and willingness to tolerate losses; the available guidance does not prescribe a bond percentage.
High-quality bonds can provide an asset class whose return drivers differ from equities. They are not risk-free: bond prices can fall when interest rates rise, and issuers may fail to pay. Bond funds can also lose value, particularly when maturities are long or credit quality is low. Cash usually has less day-to-day price movement but can lose purchasing power to inflation and may produce less growth over long periods.
Use the role you need to decide. Money needed soon may call for greater stability, while a long-term goal may support a higher stock allocation if you can withstand large temporary losses. Do not add bonds merely because an AI theme feels uncomfortable; add them when they match the job your portfolio must perform.

How should I choose an allocation without trying to forecast the next winner?
Choose the risk level first and the investments second. Investor.gov describes allocation changes as decisions driven by goals and circumstances, with rebalancing used to restore the chosen mix rather than to chase recent performance.
- Define each goal and deadline. Separate retirement, a house deposit, education and other objectives instead of treating all savings as one account.
- Set a tolerable loss range. Consider both financial ability and emotional willingness to hold through a decline.
- Choose broad equity dimensions. Decide how much exposure you want to sectors, company sizes, growth and value styles, and domestic and international markets.
- Decide whether fixed income or cash is needed. Use it for stability or a known spending date, recognizing the trade-off with expected growth.
- Write the target down. A written policy makes it easier to distinguish a deliberate change from a reaction to a headline.
The result can be growth-oriented without being concentrated in a single technology narrative. It does not need to resemble anyone else’s portfolio.

Compare investments by what they own, not by their labels, ticker symbols or packaging. An exchange-traded fund or mutual fund is not automatically diversified, and two broad-sounding funds can share many of the same companies.
| Check | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Holdings | Which companies are the largest positions, and how much do they represent together? | Reveals repeated exposure hidden across funds |
| Sector mix | Does the fund add industries or mainly repeat technology and communication services? | Shows whether it changes the portfolio’s economic drivers |
| Geography | Which countries and regions generate the holdings’ revenue? | Identifies genuine regional diversification and foreign-market risks |
| Company size and style | Is the exposure large-cap growth again, or does it add smaller companies or value stocks? | Prevents a nominally different fund from repeating the same style |
| Costs and implementation | What are the fund expenses, trading costs and tax consequences of changing positions? | A diversification benefit can be reduced by avoidable friction |
Review the underlying holdings regularly enough to notice major changes, but do not assume that a new fund name means a new risk source. The relevant comparison is the combined portfolio after the purchase.
How do I rebalance an AI-heavy portfolio?
Rebalancing restores your chosen risk and allocation levels after market movements. Use a rule decided in advance rather than selling solely because a news cycle is optimistic or fearful.
- Set a review rule. Choose a calendar interval or a preselected percentage-point threshold that triggers a review.
- Compare current weights with targets. Include direct shares and look-through fund holdings where practical.
- Direct new money first. Use new contributions or reinvested income toward underweight areas before selling, when that is workable.
- Sell only as needed. If trades are necessary, reduce the positions that create the excess concentration and buy the intended exposures.
- Check taxes and costs first. Selling can create taxable gains, transaction charges or account-specific consequences. These may justify a gradual approach or using tax-advantaged account rules where applicable.
- Record the decision. Note the target, trade and reason so the next review measures discipline rather than hindsight.
Rebalancing is not a market-timing system. Its purpose is to return the portfolio to the risk level you selected when prices or contributions moved it away.

What mistakes undermine diversification beyond AI?
Replacing one concentration with another
Moving from an AI fund into a different narrow theme does not solve concentration. A portfolio can be dominated by a sector, country, company size or style even when no holding uses the word “AI.”
Counting funds instead of exposures
Owning five funds is not necessarily safer than owning two. Shared holdings, overlapping sectors and similar regional exposure determine the actual diversification.
Chasing the latest leader
Recent performance is not a reliable forecast of future leadership. Changing allocation because one sector has just risen can lock in a high purchase price and create a new concentration.
Ignoring stock-market risk
A portfolio spread across many equity sectors can still lose value when stocks decline broadly. Asset-class diversification is a separate decision from sector diversification.

Expenses, bid-ask spreads, taxes and other trading consequences affect the result. A theoretically diversified mix may be less useful if the cost of reaching it is excessive or if sales create an avoidable tax bill.
What might a practical transition look like?
Suppose your holdings are dominated by several technology funds and individual AI-related companies. A disciplined transition would first map the repeated holdings and calculate the combined sector and company weights. You would then write a target mix based on your goals and loss tolerance, identify broad exposures that add other sectors, company sizes, styles and regions, and decide whether bonds or cash have a role.

Rather than making an all-at-once forecast-driven switch, you could direct new contributions to underrepresented areas, sell only where the concentration is materially above target, and schedule a review under your written rule. The exact securities, percentages and account actions depend on your jurisdiction, tax situation, current holdings and available investment menu; no single fund or ticker is established as appropriate for every reader.
What can diversification not do?
Diversification cannot remove market risk, guarantee a return or ensure that you will beat a concentrated AI portfolio. It can reduce the damage caused by one holding, sector or economic scenario going badly, while accepting that some diversifying assets may lag the current winner. The useful test is whether the combined portfolio matches the risk you can live with and the goals it must fund.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stop buying AI stocks completely?
Not necessarily. A diversified growth portfolio can retain an intentional AI allocation as long as its size is consistent with your written risk target and you understand the resulting concentration. The decision is whether the exposure is deliberate and survivable, not whether the theme is fashionable.
Is the FCA’s 10% figure a legal limit on AI investing?
No. It is a U.K. Financial Conduct Authority rule of thumb for experienced investors considering high-risk investments, not a law, an AI-specific cap or a recommendation tailored to people in every country. Your own regulator, account rules and circumstances may differ.
How can I diversify if my workplace plan offers only a few funds?
Read each fund’s holdings and choose the broadest available combination rather than counting the number of options. If the menu cannot provide the needed sector, size, style or regional balance, document the limitation and consider how other accounts and future contributions could change total-portfolio exposure, subject to your plan and tax rules.
When should I revisit my diversification plan?
Use the review interval or threshold in your written policy, and revisit it sooner after a major change in goals, time horizon, income, emergency reserves or ability to tolerate losses. Do not change targets merely because a daily market move makes one sector look attractive.
