Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a mix of Indian and overseas assets, not just more Indian stocks. A practical plan combines broad domestic equity with selected international exposure, high-quality debt or cash, and assets whose return drivers differ. This can reduce dependence on one economy, currency and market cycle, but it cannot guarantee protection: a global shock can push Indian and overseas markets down together.
For an Indian resident, overseas exposure usually comes through either an India-domiciled mutual-fund scheme that invests abroad or direct holdings funded under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). The two routes differ in diversification, costs, currency handling, liquidity, regulation, taxation and operational workload. Choose only after examining your whole portfolio, time horizon, risk capacity and compliance obligations.

What diversification can—and cannot—do
Indian equities are exposed to domestic earnings, interest rates, the rupee, local regulation and India-specific events. Adding assets linked to other economies can broaden the sources of return. A US, European, Japanese or emerging-market holding may respond differently to an Indian slowdown, while bonds or cash can behave differently from shares.

That benefit is not a promise of a hedge. A worldwide recession, liquidity crisis, war, commodity shock or abrupt rise in interest rates can reduce the value of Indian shares and overseas assets at the same time. Currency moves can amplify or offset the result when foreign holdings are measured in rupees. No official source cited here provides a defensible percentage for how much global diversification reduces losses in a shock, so treat diversification as risk management—not insurance.

Start with an exposure map, not a country list
Before buying anything, calculate what you already own. Include direct shares, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), employee stock, provident-fund assets, insurance investments, bank deposits and any property or business exposure relevant to your finances.
Record these dimensions
- Asset class: equity, government or corporate debt, cash, gold or other permitted assets.
- Geography: India, developed markets, emerging markets and the country where each company earns its revenue.
- Sector and factor: financials, technology, energy, healthcare, small-cap exposure, growth or value tilts.
- Currency: primarily INR, or foreign currencies such as USD, EUR or JPY.
- Concentration: the largest companies, funds and sectors, including overlap between schemes.
- Liquidity and purpose: money needed soon should not depend on selling a volatile overseas asset at an unfavourable time.
Country labels can mislead. An “international” fund may be heavily concentrated in a few US technology companies, and two funds with different names may own many of the same securities. Inspect the latest portfolio, benchmark, mandate and top holdings before treating an investment as additional diversification.
Choose the role overseas exposure will play
Write the job of each allocation before selecting a product. A broad overseas equity holding can provide long-term geographic diversification; a foreign-currency asset may also change the currency mix of your wealth. It is not automatically a short-term crisis hedge. Debt or cash may be more appropriate for near-term spending and emergency reserves.

Match allocation to the investor
- Long horizon and high risk capacity: can tolerate a larger, diversified equity allocation, rebalanced periodically.
- Short or uncertain horizon: keep money needed within the next few years in suitable domestic cash and debt instruments rather than relying on international shares.
- Large future foreign-currency expenses: an appropriately selected foreign-currency asset may reduce a currency mismatch, but it still fluctuates in value.
- Existing global income or employer stock: count that exposure; buying more of the same country or sector may increase concentration.
There is no universally correct overseas percentage. The RBI’s LRS ceiling is a legal remittance limit, not an allocation target, and a fund’s regulatory capacity is not a recommendation to use it.
Route 1: India-domiciled mutual funds and overseas ETFs
An India-domiciled scheme can buy eligible overseas securities, units of overseas mutual funds or overseas ETFs, subject to applicable Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and RBI rules. You invest in rupees through the Indian fund structure; the scheme handles foreign-market dealing, custody and portfolio administration within its mandate.
Regulatory capacity and availability
A SEBI scheme disclosure dated September 2025 describes an overall industry ceiling of USD 7 billion for overseas investments and a USD 1 billion ceiling per mutual fund. It separately describes a USD 1 billion industry ceiling for overseas ETFs and a USD 300 million ceiling per mutual fund: SEBI mutual-fund scheme disclosure (September 2025). These are regulatory limits in that disclosure, not evidence that a particular scheme has unused capacity or is accepting new subscriptions.

A more recent WhiteOak Capital Mutual Fund Scheme Information Document dated May 2026 also refers to overseas limits and conditions: SEBI scheme information document (May 2026). Limits can be exhausted or close to exhaustion, forcing a scheme to restrict or pause additional overseas investment. Check the latest SEBI circular, the fund’s current notice and its scheme documents before investing; do not assume that a fund named in an article is open for fresh money.

- Rupee-based purchase and redemption through the Indian mutual-fund system.
- Professional portfolio management and, in many schemes, broader exposure than a small set of self-selected shares.
- No need for the investor to open and maintain an overseas brokerage account.
- Indian statements and an established local dealing process, subject to the scheme’s terms.
Risks and limitations
- The portfolio may be concentrated by country, sector, theme or a small number of underlying funds.
- Costs can include the scheme’s expense ratio, expenses of underlying funds, transaction costs and currency-conversion effects. Compare the total cost, not only the headline ratio.
- Redemptions occur under the scheme’s dealing timetable and may be affected by market holidays, foreign-market settlement or temporary restrictions.
- Currency risk remains unless the mandate actually uses hedging. Read the current mandate and holdings; never infer that an international label means INR hedging.
- SEBI/RBI limits can constrain new investments even when the fund itself remains listed or visible on a platform.
- Tax treatment depends on the scheme’s structure and the investor’s circumstances. Confirm the current rules and reporting obligations with a qualified tax professional.
Route 2: Direct overseas holdings under the LRS
Resident individuals can use the LRS to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year (April–March) for permitted current or capital-account transactions, or a combination of them. The cap is shared across the individual’s permitted LRS remittances during that year; it is not a separate investment allowance. RBI’s Master Direction – Liberalised Remittance Scheme states: “Under the Scheme, Resident individuals are free to acquire and hold shares or debt instruments or any other asset including immovable property outside India without prior approval of the Reserve Bank.”
The quotation is subject to the rest of the framework. Impermissible transactions remain prohibited, and overseas exchange or counterparty-margin remittances are not allowed under LRS. Use an authorised dealer, establish the permitted purpose, and confirm documentation, tax collection, reporting and account procedures under current guidance. The USD 250,000 ceiling is neither a recommendation nor a suitable portfolio weight.

What direct ownership can add
- Access to a broad overseas ETF or individual securities unavailable through an Indian scheme, where legally permitted.
- Control over security selection, position size, currency conversion and trading time.
- Potentially transparent visibility into each holding and its domicile.
What it requires
- Access and eligibility: use a lawful intermediary and confirm that the account, instruments and investor category are permitted for an Indian resident.
- Currency management: fund the account and measure results in both the foreign currency and INR. A gain in dollars can become a loss in rupees, and vice versa.
- Custody and operational risk: assess the custodian, investor-protection regime, estate procedures, account security, corporate actions and what happens if the intermediary changes terms.
- Costs: include remittance charges, foreign-exchange spreads, brokerage, exchange fees, fund expense ratios, custody or platform fees and transfer costs. Small recurring charges can materially affect a long holding period.
- Tax and compliance: retain contract notes, remittance records, income statements and details needed for Indian tax returns and any foreign reporting. Rules can change; obtain current professional advice for your facts.
- Liquidity: market hours, holidays, settlement cycles and withdrawal procedures may differ from India. A foreign market can be open when Indian banking support is unavailable.
Compare the two routes before committing
| Decision factor | India-domiciled international scheme | Direct overseas investment |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying diversification | Depends on the scheme mandate, benchmark, holdings and overlap with your existing funds. | You choose the ETF or securities; diversification depends on your selection and position sizes. |
| Concentration risk | Can be concentrated by theme, country, sector or underlying fund. | Can be broad through one diversified ETF or concentrated in a few shares; investor controls the outcome. |
| Currency exposure | Foreign assets create INR currency exposure; hedging is possible only if the scheme actually uses it. | You generally hold foreign-currency assets directly and bear conversion risk unless a permitted hedge is used. |
| Costs | Scheme and underlying-fund expenses plus trading and currency effects. | Remittance, spread, brokerage, exchange, custody, platform and fund costs. |
| Liquidity and access | Indian mutual-fund dealing schedule, subject to scheme restrictions and overseas-market conditions. | Foreign-market hours, settlement, account funding and withdrawal processes. |
| Regulatory limits | SEBI/RBI overseas-investment ceilings can limit a scheme’s ability to invest. | LRS permits up to USD 250,000 per resident individual per April–March financial year for permitted transactions; the cap is shared and exclusions apply. |
| Tax and records | Tax depends on the Indian scheme and the investor’s situation; keep statements and notices. | May require more detailed records of remittances, trades, income, gains and foreign assets; obtain current advice. |
| Best fit | Investors seeking local administration and a professionally managed international allocation. | Investors needing specific overseas access who can manage compliance, costs, custody and currency decisions. |
Build diversification across assets, not only countries
Adding foreign equities to an all-equity portfolio changes geography but may not reduce drawdowns enough for your circumstances. Consider the purpose of each sleeve.
Domestic and international equity
Use broad exposure rather than collecting narrowly themed funds. Check company, sector and regional overlap. A global fund that is mostly one country may not provide the diversification you expect, while several funds can recreate the same large companies.
Debt and cash reserves
Emergency money and near-term goals need liquidity and capital stability appropriate to the investor, not an overseas equity allocation. Domestic debt and cash also carry credit, interest-rate and inflation risks, so evaluate quality, maturity and access rather than treating them as risk-free.

Gold and other diversifiers
Gold or another permitted diversifying asset may respond to different drivers from corporate earnings, but prices can be volatile and may fall during some shocks. Select it only for a defined portfolio role and account for its costs, liquidity and tax treatment.
Currency risk: measure it explicitly
If a foreign asset rises 8% in its local currency while the rupee strengthens 5% against that currency, the INR return will be lower than 8% before costs and taxes. A rupee decline can work in the opposite direction. This arithmetic is why the same overseas holding can have different local-currency and home-currency results.
Funds may hedge currency where their mandate permits, but hedging introduces costs and can remove some benefit from a favourable currency move. Read the scheme’s current policy, hedging ratio and disclosures. Direct investors should decide whether the foreign-currency exposure matches a future liability or is simply an additional source of volatility.
A practical implementation process
- Set a target role. Define whether overseas assets are for long-term growth, a future foreign-currency liability or broader diversification. Write the time horizon and maximum tolerable loss.
- Map current holdings. Aggregate direct and indirect Indian and foreign exposure, including overlapping companies, sectors and currencies.
- Choose an asset mix. Decide how much belongs in domestic equity, international equity, debt, cash and any other permitted diversifier. Keep goal-specific reserves separate.
- Screen the route. For an Indian scheme, read the mandate, benchmark, top holdings, expense disclosures, dealing terms, currency policy and current overseas-limit notice. For direct investing, verify LRS eligibility, authorised-dealer process, intermediary permissions and all charges.
- Check total cost and taxes. Model recurring expenses, conversion spreads, remittance fees, brokerage, withholding and Indian tax reporting without assuming a particular tax rate or treatment.
- Fund gradually if appropriate. A staged approach can reduce the risk of committing all available money immediately, but it does not remove market or currency risk. Follow the chosen route’s rules and minimums.
- Set a rebalancing rule. Rebalance on a calendar or when an allocation moves beyond a pre-set band. Use new contributions and withdrawals first where practical to reduce unnecessary transactions.
- Review after material changes. Recheck the portfolio when income, goals, residency, tax rules, fund mandates, overseas limits or intermediary terms change.
Stress-test the plan before a shock arrives
Use scenarios rather than a single historical return. Ask what happens if Indian equities fall sharply, global equities fall together, the rupee strengthens, the rupee weakens, foreign markets close while India is open, or your chosen fund temporarily cannot add overseas positions. For each scenario, identify the cash you can access, the assets you would not sell, and the rebalancing rule you would follow.
Also test operational failure: a delayed remittance, a frozen subscription, a missing tax statement, a custodian outage or an unexpected change in an intermediary’s terms. Keep an emergency reserve and records outside the investment account so a market disruption does not become a household cash-flow crisis.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating the LRS ceiling as a target: the USD 250,000 limit is a legal cap for permitted remittances, shared across the financial year—not a recommended allocation.
- Assuming “global” means broadly diversified: inspect country, sector, company and benchmark weights.
- Ignoring overlap: compare look-through holdings across Indian and international funds.
- Assuming a hedge: verify whether the scheme actually hedges currency and how much.
- Forgetting regulatory capacity: scheme-level overseas limits can restrict additional investment even when a product remains visible.
- Comparing only headline fees: include underlying expenses, spreads, remittance, brokerage, custody and tax-related costs.
- Using volatile assets for near-term goals: match liquidity and risk to the date the money is needed.
- Relying on stale availability information: confirm current subscriptions, limits and account terms directly in official notices.
- Skipping records: retain remittance proofs, statements, trade confirmations, dividends, withholding details and valuation information.
Decision checklist
- Have you calculated your existing India, overseas, sector and currency exposure?
- Does the proposed investment add a genuinely different return driver?
- Is the route legal and available to your investor category today?
- Have you read the current mandate, holdings, limits, dealing terms and currency policy?
- Can you explain every recurring and one-time cost?
- Can you meet your near-term expenses without selling it?
- Do you understand the tax and reporting work, and have you obtained qualified advice where necessary?
- What exact event will trigger rebalancing, and how will you fund it?
Bottom line
A resilient Indian portfolio is usually built by combining appropriately sized domestic and international exposure with assets and liquidity matched to your goals. Compare an India-domiciled fund with direct overseas ownership on underlying diversification, concentration, currency, total cost, access, regulatory limits, tax and operational burden. Use official, current documents and remember that diversification broadens exposures; it does not make the portfolio immune to a global market shock.
