If AI stocks make up most of your portfolio, diversify in this order: measure your real AI exposure (including overlapping fund holdings), set a stock-bond-cash mix for your goal and risk capacity, broaden equities across sectors, company sizes, regions and investment styles, then rebalance on rules rather than headlines. There is no universally correct percentage for AI or technology; the suitable amount depends on when you need the money, how much loss you can withstand, taxes and cash-flow needs.
What diversification means when AI shares dominate
Diversification is the deliberate spread of risk across investments that do not all respond to the same event. The SEC’s Investor.gov describes it as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” For an AI-heavy portfolio, that means looking beyond the number of tickers. You need to spread risk across:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Asset classes: stocks, high-quality bonds and, for near-term needs, cash or cash equivalents.
- Sectors: technology alongside health care, consumer goods, financials, energy and other industries.
- Company sizes: large-, mid- and small-capitalization companies.
- Geographies: U.S., developed markets outside the U.S. and emerging markets.
- Investment styles: growth and value.
Several funds can still leave you concentrated. A technology ETF, a growth fund, a Nasdaq-tracking fund and a broad-market fund may all own the same large AI-related companies. Counting four funds as four independent sources of risk would overstate your diversification. Investor.gov cautions that owning several funds does not ensure diversification when their holdings overlap.
Diversification reduces concentration risk; it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses. Stocks can fall together, bonds can lose value when interest rates rise, and international investments carry currency and political risks.

Step 1: Map your total AI and technology exposure
Do not choose a new fund until you know what you already own. Build one inventory that includes taxable and retirement accounts, workplace plans, employer stock and money set aside for the same goal.
List direct and indirect exposure
- Individual companies whose revenues or valuations are closely tied to AI infrastructure, chips, cloud computing or AI software.
- Employer stock, including restricted shares or options that have not yet vested.
- Technology, semiconductor, robotics, artificial-intelligence and other sector funds.
- Growth, innovation and Nasdaq-oriented funds.
- Broad U.S. or global index funds that may hold the same companies among their largest positions.
Look through every fund
For each fund, record its current top holdings, sector weights, regional weights and the date of the fact sheet. Multiply each repeated holding by its percentage in each fund and add the results across your accounts. The same process works for technology exposure as a whole, even when a company is not marketed as an AI investment.
An illustrative calculation: if one fund is 8% in Company A and another is 4% in Company A, your portfolio has 12% exposure to that company before considering any shares you own directly. The arithmetic is only an example; use the actual weights and account values shown by your providers.

For every holding, calculate its portfolio weight as the holding’s market value divided by the value of all investments for that goal. Then group the results by company, sector, geography and style. A portfolio can look spread across many securities yet have a high single-company or U.S. growth concentration.
Refresh the map after large price moves, fund changes or an employer-stock vesting event. Fund holdings change, so an old snapshot can understate today’s overlap.
Step 2: Set the strategic mix before choosing an AI allocation
The right question is not “What percentage of my portfolio should be AI?” It is “What mix of volatile and defensive assets can fund this goal without forcing a sale at a bad time?” The SEC framework bases asset allocation on your time horizon and your ability and willingness to bear losses.

Match risk to the goal’s time horizon
- Near-term spending: Money needed soon generally calls for less volatility and a larger role for cash or high-quality short-term bonds.
- Intermediate goals: A blend of stocks and bonds can reduce the chance that a market decline coincides with a planned withdrawal.
- Long-term goals: A longer horizon can support more volatile assets, but only if you can continue holding them through severe declines.
Separate ability from willingness to take risk
Your ability to bear a loss depends on stable income, emergency reserves, debt, insurance and when withdrawals begin. Willingness is your behavioral response to a decline. If you would sell a concentrated AI position after a 30% drop, its current weight may be too high even if your spreadsheet labels the portfolio aggressive.

Write a target range for stocks, bonds and cash before deciding how much of the stock allocation belongs in technology or AI. This prevents a recent run-up from silently turning a long-term plan into a single-theme bet.
Step 3: Diversify the equity portion
Spread across sectors
Use broad equity funds where they fit your plan, then inspect their holdings. Complement technology exposure with sectors such as health care, consumer goods, financials and energy. Sector diversification does not make each sector safe; it reduces dependence on one industry’s earnings cycle, regulation and valuation.
Spread across company sizes
Large-cap growth companies may dominate AI benchmarks. Adding mid- and small-cap exposure changes the economic drivers of the equity sleeve, although smaller companies can be more volatile and less liquid. Keep the allocation consistent with your overall risk capacity rather than adding small caps simply because a concentrated position rose.
Spread across regions
Consider U.S. equities together with developed markets outside the U.S. and emerging markets. Regional diversification introduces currency and political risks, but it can reduce reliance on U.S. mega-cap AI leaders. Vanguard’s 2026 commentary identifies non-U.S. equities as a potential complement to U.S. AI leaders; its scenario work is model-based and not a promise of performance.

Balance growth and value styles
Growth companies are often valued for earnings expected in the future, while value-oriented companies generally trade at lower prices relative to measures such as earnings or book value. They can respond differently to interest rates, economic growth and investor sentiment. Vanguard’s AI discussion says that, if AI succeeds in transforming the economy, companies using the technology may benefit more broadly than the companies building it; in that scenario, value and ex-U.S. companies could benefit relative to today’s U.S. growth leaders. That is a scenario, not a forecast or a required allocation.

Step 4: Add ballast that matches the goal
High-quality bonds
Bonds are generally less volatile than stocks, although bond categories differ materially. Government bonds, investment-grade bonds, corporate credit and high-yield bonds carry different default, interest-rate and liquidity risks. A bond allocation should therefore be specified by quality, maturity and role, not just by the word “bonds.”
Vanguard’s 2026 commentary says the diversification benefit of bonds is perhaps the strongest it has been in years and points to a balanced mix of maturities, geographies and modest inflation protection as a source of resilience. The appropriate mix still depends on your withdrawal date and tolerance for price changes.
Cash and cash equivalents
Cash-like holdings can suit emergency reserves and short-term spending because they are less exposed to daily stock-market swings. They may lose purchasing power to inflation and can earn less than longer-term investments. Keep the amount tied to a defined cash need rather than using cash as an indefinite reaction to market fear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the ballast to protect a withdrawal plan
If you expect to draw from the portfolio during a volatile period, assign enough cash or high-quality bonds to scheduled withdrawals so you are not forced to sell an AI-heavy stock after a sharp decline. Revisit that reserve as the spending date approaches.
What Vanguard’s current AI scenarios imply—and what they do not
Vanguard global head of portfolio construction Roger Aliaga-Díaz notes that investment in AI has powered earnings and that the builders may still have room to run, while also warning that valuations surpass even optimistic earnings forecasts and could become a performance headwind. The same commentary says that, over the longer term and assuming AI transforms the economy, companies using the technology may receive the greatest benefit rather than the builders themselves. That logic supports considering value and non-U.S. equities alongside U.S. AI leaders, not replacing one concentrated bet with another.
Vanguard’s 2026 outlook uses a model portfolio spread across U.S. value, a U.S. small-cap factor, emerging markets, developed ex-U.S. equities, U.S. aggregate and Treasury bonds, credit and international bonds. The paper labels these allocations and projections hypothetical. They are useful examples of diversification axes, not a universal recipe or a promise that any sleeve will outperform.

Think in scenarios rather than predictions:
| Scenario | Potential pressure point | Why a diversified mix can help |
|---|---|---|
| AI earnings and adoption broaden faster than expected | Non-AI holdings may lag the leaders for a period | You retain participation through broad equity exposure without making one theme your entire plan |
| AI expectations disappoint or valuations reset | Highly concentrated growth and semiconductor positions can fall together | Bonds, cash, value, smaller companies and non-U.S. equities may respond to different drivers |
| Interest rates or inflation change the valuation of long-duration growth stocks | Growth-heavy portfolios can experience simultaneous pressure | A mix of maturities, bond quality, styles and regions spreads the sources of return and risk |
Step 5: Choose an implementation method
| Approach | Concentration reduction | Volatility control | Implementation burden | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trim individual AI or technology shares | Directly lowers single-company risk | Depends on what replaces the shares | Requires tax-lot and order decisions | Selling appreciated positions can create taxable gains and transaction costs |
| Use broad diversified equity funds | Spreads exposure across sectors, sizes and regions when holdings support that goal | Still stock-market risk | Moderate; holdings and overlap must be checked | A broad fund may still be top-heavy in large U.S. growth companies |
| Add high-quality bond or cash allocations | Reduces dependence on equities | Can reduce portfolio volatility, subject to bond risks | Requires selecting quality, maturity and account location | Lower expected growth than an all-stock portfolio and possible interest-rate losses |
| Redirect new contributions and dividends | Raises underweight areas without immediately selling | Gradual change | Low to moderate | May take time if the concentration is large |
| Target-date or automated rebalancing solution | Uses a preset diversified policy | Depends on the selected glide path | Lower day-to-day effort | You give up some control and must review the strategy, fees and tax treatment |
Compare options on the axes that matter to you: concentration reduction, volatility control, growth exposure, implementation effort, tax and cost impact, and performance in contrasting AI outcomes.
Step 6: Rebalance with rules, not headlines
Rebalancing restores the strategic mix after market movements push it away from target. The SEC says savvy investors typically do not increase stocks merely because the stock market is hot; they rebalance instead. Vanguard describes rebalancing as staying aligned with long-term goals rather than market timing.
Pick a calendar rule
Choose an annual review date or another interval you can follow consistently. At the review, compare actual weights with your targets and trade only when the difference matters under your written policy.
Pick a drift-threshold rule
A threshold such as 5 percentage points triggers a review when an allocation moves that far from target. For example, a target of 20% for a sleeve would prompt attention at 25% or 15%. The threshold is a governance rule, not a prediction that markets will reverse.
Combine both rules
Many investors review on a fixed schedule and act when a sleeve exceeds its threshold. Record the date, weights, trades, tax lots and the reason for each change. Do not rewrite the target merely because AI shares recently outperformed; change the target only after a deliberate review of the goal, risk capacity and assumptions.
Use cash flows before selling when practical
Direct new contributions, employer-plan deferrals and dividends toward underweight assets. In taxable accounts, this can reduce the need to sell appreciated AI positions. When selling is necessary, consider tax lots, holding periods, capital-loss opportunities, transaction costs and any restrictions in an employer plan. Tax rules vary by jurisdiction; consult a qualified tax professional for personal advice.

Tax, account and practical checks before you trade
- Taxable accounts: Estimate the gain, holding period and tax impact for each lot before selling.
- Retirement accounts: Rebalancing may be simpler when trades do not create current capital-gains taxes, but plan rules and investment menus still matter.
- Employer stock: Treat unvested and vested shares as part of total exposure, not as a separate portfolio.
- Fees and spreads: Compare fund expense ratios, trading costs and bid-ask spreads before replacing holdings.
- Fund methodology: Read the index or strategy description; “technology,” “innovation” and “AI” labels do not guarantee broad diversification.
- Beneficiaries and liquidity: Keep emergency reserves and near-term obligations outside a volatile allocation.
Common mistakes when diversifying away from AI concentration
Replacing one theme with another
Moving from AI stocks into a single non-U.S. or small-cap fund does not create a complete plan. Check how the new holding changes sector, regional, size and style exposures together.
Assuming fund count equals diversification
Five funds can have fewer distinct economic exposures than one genuinely broad fund. Review top holdings and overlap before adding another ticker.
Using a fixed AI percentage for everyone
A worker with decades until retirement and a household needing the money next year should not receive the same target. Time horizon, risk capacity, taxes and cash needs come first.
Recommended Free Tools
Waiting for a perfect exit price
Trying to sell at the peak and buy the replacement at the bottom turns risk control into market timing. A documented schedule, threshold or cash-flow plan is more repeatable.
Ignoring behavior
If a position is large enough to change your sleep, spending or willingness to stay invested, it is large enough to review regardless of its recent return.
Confusing a bond label with safety
Long maturities, lower credit quality and concentrated credit funds can fluctuate substantially. Match bond quality and maturity to the role the allocation must play.
A one-page action checklist
- Define the goal, withdrawal date and minimum cash reserve.
- List every account, individual security, employer holding and fund.
- Calculate repeated company weights and total technology exposure across funds.
- Set a strategic stock, bond and cash mix based on time horizon and risk capacity.
- Within stocks, set intentional exposures to sectors, company sizes, regions and growth/value styles.
- Choose bond quality, maturities and any inflation-sensitive exposure that fit the goal.
- Decide whether to trim, redirect contributions, exchange funds or use an automated solution.
- Estimate taxes, fees and trading restrictions before placing orders.
- Write an annual review date, a drift threshold such as 5 percentage points, or both.
- Document the policy and follow it through both AI rallies and sell-offs.
Bottom line for an AI-heavy portfolio
Start with exposure mapping, not a market forecast. Then build the asset allocation around the goal, diversify the equity sleeve across sectors, sizes, regions and styles, add bonds or cash for the required stability, and rebalance under precommitted rules. Vanguard’s 2026 scenarios support considering value, non-U.S. equities and a balanced bond allocation as complements to U.S. AI leaders, while explicitly warning that model projections are hypothetical. The durable decision is a mix you can maintain when AI expectations are soaring and when they disappoint.
