If a handful of technology companies drive most of your returns, reduce the risk by setting a target mix based on your goal, time horizon and risk tolerance; measuring direct and fund-level overlap; adding exposure to other sectors, company sizes, regions and asset classes; and rebalancing when the portfolio drifts. You do not have to sell every successful technology holding at once. New contributions, tax-aware sales and a diversified broad-market or target-date fund can move you toward a better balance.
There is no single percentage of technology exposure that is “too much” for every investor. The right limit depends on what the money is for, when you need it, how much loss you can withstand and whether your job or other assets already depend on the same sector.

Why a technology-heavy portfolio is a concentration risk
Diversification has two layers. Asset allocation spreads money among stocks, bonds, cash and, where appropriate, other asset categories. Within-asset diversification spreads each category across companies, sectors, company sizes and regions. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes diversification as spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. Owning several technology shares, or several funds that all own the same large technology companies, addresses neither layer adequately.
A concentrated portfolio can rise quickly when the favored companies and growth style are in favor, but the same concentration magnifies losses when earnings disappoint, valuations fall, regulation changes, interest rates rise or a business suffers an operational problem. If your wages, stock options or retirement plan also depend on your employer—a technology company, for example—you may have more exposure than your brokerage statement suggests. A decline could affect both your investments and your income at the same time.

Concentration is not automatically wrong. An investor with a long horizon, substantial non-technology assets and the ability to tolerate large swings may intentionally keep more technology exposure. The decision becomes dangerous when the exposure is accidental, hidden in fund overlap or inconsistent with the date and purpose of the money.
Step 1: Map the exposure you already own
Before buying or selling anything, create one consolidated inventory. Record the market value and percentage of every individual security, mutual fund, exchange-traded fund (ETF), workplace plan holding and cash balance. Then look through each fund’s current holdings and sector weights. A fund’s name—“growth,” “innovation” or even “index”—does not prove that it diversifies your existing positions.
| What to record | Why it matters | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Security and account | Shows where a position is held and whether selling could create tax or plan restrictions. | Separate taxable, traditional retirement and Roth accounts before choosing what to sell. |
| Portfolio weight | Reveals whether one company or fund can materially change the result. | Calculate each holding as a percentage of the entire portfolio, not just one account. |
| Sector and industry | Identifies technology, communication-services and other exposures that may behave similarly. | Compare the combined weight with the target you set for your circumstances. |
| Top holdings inside each fund | Shows indirect ownership of the same mega-cap companies. | Add overlapping companies together instead of counting each fund as independent. |
| Geography and company size | Indicates whether the portfolio depends on one country or capitalization segment. | Look for exposure to multiple regions and to small- and mid-sized companies when appropriate. |
| Cost, turnover and tax status | Determines how expensive and tax-inefficient a change may be. | Use expense ratios, trading costs, distributions and account type in the implementation decision. |
Calculate overlap instead of counting fund labels
Suppose you own three funds. One is a broad U.S. index, one tracks large-company growth stocks and one is a technology-sector fund. They are three line items, but their largest holdings may be the same companies. Add the look-through value of each company across all funds and individual shares. The resulting total is your economic exposure.
Also check correlations in plain language: funds concentrated in large growth companies can fall together even when their legal fund names differ. A broad fund can be a useful core holding, but it may still have a large technology weight because the market-capitalization index gives its biggest companies the largest positions. “Broad” means broad relative to its benchmark, not necessarily balanced for your household.
How much technology exposure is too much?
No authoritative source establishes one universal current percentage for technology exposure. Market composition changes, and an appropriate allocation is personal. Instead of searching for a magic number, use a decision rule tied to your plan.
Start with the loss you can finance
Ask how a severe decline in technology stocks would affect a specific goal. Money needed for a house purchase, tuition, an emergency reserve or a near-term retirement withdrawal generally has less capacity for equity volatility than money intended for a goal decades away. If a large drawdown would force you to sell at an inconvenient time, the exposure is too high for that goal even if the long-run expected return looks attractive.

Include career and human-capital exposure
Count employer stock, unvested awards, options, a technology-sector salary and a business you own as related exposure. An employee whose paycheck and retirement account depend on one company may need a lower portfolio allocation to that company or sector than an investor with no such connection. Vesting schedules, blackout windows and tax withholding can make a gradual reduction more practical than a single sale.

Use concentration tests
- Single-company test: What percentage of the entire household balance would be lost if one holding fell sharply?
- Top-holdings test: Add the largest positions across every fund and account. Does a small group dominate the result?
- Sector test: Combine technology with adjacent exposures that may respond to the same growth, rate or regulatory forces.
- Scenario test: Model a substantial decline in technology and a period in which value stocks, bonds or international shares lead instead. Could you stay invested and meet withdrawals?
- Goal test: Would the concentration compromise a required goal, emergency reserve or debt-payment plan?
If several tests produce an uncomfortable answer, reduce the dependence even if the sector has recently outperformed. The SEC’s investor guidance cautions against changing an allocation simply because one sector has done well.
Set a target allocation before changing positions
Write down the goal, dollar amount, time horizon, required liquidity and your tolerance for both temporary and permanent loss. Then choose a target mix among equities, bonds, cash and any other category you can understand and monitor. The target is a policy for your household, not a prediction about next year’s winners.
Match risk to the time horizon
- Short horizon: Prioritize money needed soon in assets whose value is less likely to swing sharply. Keep an adequate cash reserve separate from long-term investments.
- Intermediate horizon: Use a blend that can support growth while limiting the chance that a market decline coincides with the spending date.
- Long horizon: You may accept more stock volatility, but still spread equity exposure so one sector or company does not determine the outcome.
These are principles, not personal recommendations. The SEC notes that allocation is complicated and depends on individual circumstances. Document why each target exists, what would cause you to change it and which account will hold each asset.
Choose a technology limit as part of the policy
Rather than trying to forecast a sector’s return, set a maximum or range that you can maintain through a full market cycle. The range can apply to a single company, all technology holdings or a broader group of correlated growth investments. A range is more workable than a point target because prices move every day. Revisit the range after a job change, inheritance, major purchase, retirement or change in risk capacity—not merely after a headline.

Build diversification within equities
Once the overall stock-versus-bond mix is clear, diversify the stock sleeve. Broad funds can provide many companies in one purchase, but inspect the benchmark, top-ten weight, sector breakdown, geographic exposure and turnover. A fund that owns hundreds of securities can still be dominated by its largest positions.

Spread across sectors and company sizes
Combine exposure to businesses with different revenue drivers rather than adding several versions of the same large-growth strategy. Depending on your plan, that may include industrial, health-care, consumer, financial, energy, utility, real-estate and other sectors, plus a mix of large-, mid- and small-capitalization companies. Sector labels are imperfect, so review the actual holdings and the industries represented.
Consider geographic breadth
International and emerging-market shares can diversify country-specific economic, currency and policy risks, but they introduce their own volatility, costs and tax considerations. Decide whether the geographic mix belongs in your target policy, then use funds whose regional exposure is clear. Do not assume that a company listed in one country earns all of its revenue there.
Add bonds and cash for a different risk source
Bonds and cash do not guarantee a profit, and bond prices can fall when interest rates rise. Their role is to provide a different return and risk pattern from equities and to fund planned spending without selling stocks after a decline. Match bond maturity and credit risk to the job the allocation must perform; a high-yield fund is not a substitute for a low-volatility reserve.
Compare three implementation approaches
There is no universally best structure. Compare each approach against your total stock and bond allocation, technology and top-ten concentration, overlap with current holdings, geographic and sector breadth, expenses, turnover, tax location, rebalancing method, glide path and fit with your time horizon.
| Approach | How it works | Advantages | Limitations to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| One broad-market fund | Holds a wide slice of a market using one mutual fund or ETF. | Simple, usually easy to monitor and often broadly diversified within its benchmark. | Market-cap weighting can leave large technology companies prominent; it may not include the bond, cash or international mix you need. |
| Multi-fund portfolio | Combines separate stock, bond, international or other funds. | Lets you set the asset, sector, size and geographic mix more precisely. | Requires overlap checks, periodic rebalancing, tax decisions and discipline; several funds can still be concentrated. |
| Target-date fund | Uses underlying stock and bond funds and generally becomes more conservative as the stated target date approaches. | Automates allocation changes and rebalancing in one holding. | Glide paths, equity levels, fees, holdings and target-date assumptions differ; it may not match your other accounts or withdrawal plan. |
Read the fund’s prospectus and current holdings before deciding. A target-date fund can simplify the job, but compare its glide path and total costs with your needs. If you hold one alongside other accounts, analyze the combined portfolio; otherwise the intended allocation can be overwhelmed by outside technology positions.
Move toward the target without an avoidable tax bill
Tax treatment depends on account type, cost basis, holding period and jurisdiction. Consider the implementation sequence before placing an order.

- Use contributions first. Direct new retirement contributions, payroll deferrals and taxable-account purchases to underweight assets. This can reduce concentration without selling appreciated shares.
- Rebalance inside tax-advantaged accounts when practical. Trades inside many retirement accounts generally do not create a current capital-gains bill, although plan rules, investment menus and future withdrawals still matter. Verify the rules for your account.
- Sell deliberately in taxable accounts. Review each tax lot, unrealized gain or loss, holding period and applicable capital-gains rate. You may spread sales across tax years or combine gains and losses, but obtain tax advice for your circumstances.
- Use a drift rule. Rebalance on a calendar schedule or when an allocation moves a preset amount or percentage away from target. A rule reduces emotional trading and limits unnecessary transactions.
- Check transaction costs and distributions. Account for commissions where applicable, bid-ask spreads, fund redemption fees and taxable year-end distributions before trading.
- Document the trade. Record the target, the reason for the change, the lots sold and the resulting allocation. This prevents a temporary market move from becoming an unplanned strategy change.
Tax efficiency should not justify keeping a risk level you cannot afford. If a concentrated position has a very large unrealized gain, a staged plan, charitable strategy where eligible, or professional tax advice may make the reduction more manageable. Do not let a tax bill turn into an excuse to ignore an exposure that threatens a required goal.
Rebalance on a schedule or threshold
Rebalancing means restoring the target mix, not guessing which asset will rise next. Choose one method:
- Calendar method: Review at a regular interval, such as annually, and trade only when the allocation no longer fits the policy.
- Threshold method: Trade when an asset class or concentration exceeds the written tolerance. Thresholds can be expressed in percentage points, relative percentages or a specific company limit.
- Contribution method: Redirect deposits and distributions first, then sell only when cash flows cannot correct the drift.
Review at least annually and after a major life change. A review is not a command to trade; it is a check that goals, risk capacity, fees, beneficiaries, tax location and holdings still align. Rebalancing too frequently can create costs and taxes, while never rebalancing lets a successful sector silently become the portfolio.
Handle employer stock and concentrated awards
Employer shares deserve a separate plan because they combine investment risk with employment risk. List vested shares, unvested awards, options, purchase-plan shares and the percentage of household income tied to the employer. Note vesting dates, trading windows, blackout periods and withholding arrangements.
Decide in advance what happens when shares vest: retain, sell immediately, or sell enough to cover taxes and diversify the remainder. The correct choice depends on your risk, tax basis, liquidity needs and confidence in keeping the job; none is universally right. Avoid allowing automatic reinvestment or a company-stock match to grow beyond the limit in your policy. A fee-only fiduciary adviser and tax professional can be useful when the position is large, the gain is substantial or the rules are complex.

A practical annual checklist
- Download current statements and list every holding, account, balance and cost basis.
- Look through each fund to record top holdings, sector weights, regions and company sizes.
- Add direct and indirect technology exposure, including employer stock and awards.
- Review goals, time horizons, emergency reserves, debt and risk capacity.
- Write or update target ranges for stocks, bonds, cash, sectors, regions and single-company exposure.
- Compare the target with the actual portfolio and identify the least costly way to close the gap.
- Redirect new contributions and distributions before selling appreciated assets.
- If selling is necessary, review tax lots, holding periods, fees and trading restrictions.
- Record the transactions and schedule the next review.
Repeat the process after retirement, a job change, inheritance, marriage, divorce, major purchase or any event that changes your ability to take risk. When concentrated employer stock, large unrealized gains or complicated taxes make the plan difficult, interview a fee-only fiduciary adviser who will disclose compensation and conflicts.
What to remember
Technology exposure becomes a portfolio problem when it can determine whether an important goal succeeds. Measure the exposure through every account, set a target that reflects your own horizon and risk tolerance, diversify both the asset mix and the holdings inside it, and use contributions or disciplined rebalancing to move toward that target. Broad funds and target-date funds can make the process easier, but only a look-through review tells you whether your portfolio is actually diversified.
