First measure your real technology exposure—including the technology holdings inside funds and employer stock—then set a target mix that fits your goals, time horizon, cash needs and tolerance for losses. Direct new contributions toward underweight areas, sell appreciated positions selectively with taxes in mind, and rebalance using a written rule.
There is no universally correct technology percentage. A portfolio can look diversified by fund count while the same large technology companies appear in several funds. Diversification works only after you examine the holdings underneath each label.

What technology overexposure actually means
Technology overexposure is a concentration problem, not simply a problem of owning a technology company. Your exposure is the combined share of every holding whose performance is strongly tied to technology, including direct shares, sector funds, broad-market funds, target-date funds, employer stock, stock options and concentrated positions in a taxable account.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes diversification as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” The same principle applies at two levels: between asset categories such as stocks, bonds and cash, and within each category across companies, industries, sizes, regions and investment styles. A portfolio with five technology funds may still be one concentrated bet.

Concentration can increase the effect of a single earnings disappointment, product cycle, regulation, interest-rate change or valuation decline. It can also create an income and career risk if you work in the technology industry and your salary, bonus or company equity depend on the same economic forces as your investments. Diversification reduces dependence on one outcome; it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Why the number of funds is a poor test
Two exchange-traded or mutual funds can own many of the same mega-cap companies. A fund described as “broad market” may have a substantial technology weight because those companies are a large part of its index. Investor.gov warns that narrowly focused funds may not diversify an investor and recommends checking overlapping top holdings. Count the underlying companies and their weights, not just the tickers in your account.
Step 1: Map your exposure before changing anything
Build a complete inventory
List every account and position at its current market value. Include taxable brokerage accounts, retirement plans, health savings accounts, custodial accounts and cash that is intended for investment. Record direct technology shares, sector funds, broad-market funds, company stock, restricted stock, options and any concentrated legacy positions. Note whether each holding is pre-tax, Roth, tax-exempt or taxable; the same sale can have very different consequences in each account.
For an employer position, include shares you cannot yet sell and vested equity you plan to receive. A holding that is locked up still contributes to your economic concentration, even if it cannot be traded today. If your household finances are shared, include a spouse’s or partner’s concentrated positions when judging the risk you can actually bear.
Look through every fund
Use the latest holdings and sector breakdown supplied by each fund provider. Record the percentage classified as technology, the ten largest holdings, geographic exposure, company-size exposure and investment style. Classification systems differ, so read the methodology and the date of the factsheet rather than assuming that two funds use identical sector definitions.
Add the technology weight from each fund to your direct technology holdings. For example, if a hypothetical investor owns 25% directly in technology shares, 30% in a broad fund that is 28% technology, and 15% in a sector fund that is 90% technology, the look-through technology exposure is 25% + (30% × 28%) + (15% × 90%) = 46.9% of the portfolio. The arithmetic is illustrative; use your own current weights and fund data.
Check company overlap
Make a second list of the largest companies across all funds and direct holdings. If the same company appears in several funds, add those weights. A portfolio can have a lower stated sector percentage than expected yet still be heavily dependent on a few companies. Include a company’s shares held through an employer plan when calculating that company’s total household weight.
Separate economic exposure from labels
Some businesses are classified outside technology even though their revenue, suppliers or customers are closely linked to technology spending. Conversely, a technology-labeled company may have diversified revenue. Use the official sector classification for a consistent starting point, then consider business and employment exposure when deciding how much concentration is acceptable.
Step 2: Write a target policy before trading
Set the broad asset mix
Write the percentage ranges you want in stocks, bonds and cash equivalents. The right mix depends on when the money will be needed, how stable your income is, whether you have an emergency reserve and how much of a temporary decline you can tolerate without selling. Money needed soon generally has less capacity for stock risk than money for a distant goal, but the decision is personal rather than a universal formula.

Define what counts as cash for your plan. A bank deposit or money-market holding may serve near-term liquidity, while a short-term bond fund can fluctuate in value. State the purpose and time horizon for each bucket so that a market decline does not force you to sell long-term assets for a short-term bill.
Set limits within the stock allocation
Choose a maximum weight for any one company and a maximum combined weight for technology. Do not copy a threshold from another investor: a founder with substantial private-company wealth, a worker whose compensation is tied to a technology employer and a retiree drawing from a portfolio have different concentration risks. Your written limit should cover direct shares and fund look-through exposure together.
Define diversification beyond sectors
Vanguard recommends spreading stock exposure across sectors, company sizes, geographic regions and investment styles. Decide whether your policy includes:
- Large-, mid- and small-cap companies rather than only the largest firms.
- Developed international and emerging-market stocks in addition to domestic stocks.
- Value, blend and growth styles, recognizing that style labels can overlap and change.
- Non-technology industries such as health care, consumer staples, industrials, energy, utilities and financials.
These categories are tools for reducing dependence on one market outcome, not a list of mandatory purchases. A broad fund may already contain several of them, so check its holdings before adding another fund.
Write the policy in a usable format
For each asset category, record a target percentage, an acceptable range, the account in which it will be held, the fund or security type you will use and the rule for correcting drift. Also record which assets are excluded from the target because they are employer stock, private investments or money reserved for spending. A policy that can be followed during a volatile market is more useful than a detailed plan you will abandon.
Step 3: Choose practical diversification levers
Redirect new contributions first
Changing the destination of future 401(k), IRA or brokerage contributions can reduce concentration without immediately realizing gains. Direct purchases toward the asset classes, regions or company sizes that are below your targets. This approach is especially useful when a taxable position has a large unrealized gain or when a retirement plan offers limited trading choices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a broad-market fund carefully
A total-market or similarly broad fund can spread exposure across many companies and industries with one holding. It is not automatically a solution: inspect its current technology weight, top holdings, geographic split, index methodology and expense ratio. Adding a second broad fund with nearly identical holdings may change the ticker count without changing your risk.
Add non-technology stock exposure
Health care, consumer staples, industrials, energy, utilities and financials respond to different economic drivers, although none is guaranteed to rise when technology falls. Sector funds can be useful for a deliberate gap, but they are concentrated by design. Compare the fund’s largest holdings and total sector weight with what you already own before buying.
Broaden company size
Small- and mid-cap funds can reduce dependence on mega-cap companies. They bring different business, liquidity and volatility characteristics, so treat them as part of the stock allocation rather than as a substitute for bonds or cash. Check whether a broad-market fund already includes them and whether a proposed fund duplicates another holding.

Add international stocks
Developed and emerging international markets can reduce dependence on U.S. technology leadership and introduce different currencies, industries and economic cycles. International markets can lag domestic stocks for long periods, and currency movements can help or hurt returns. Decide whether your policy will hedge currency exposure or accept it, and understand the fund’s regional weights before investing.
Recommended Free Tools
Use high-quality bonds for a different risk source
High-quality government and investment-grade bond funds can diversify stock volatility, although bond prices can fall when interest rates rise and credit quality matters. International bonds may reduce volatility through lower correlations with domestic assets, but they add currency and country risks. No bond allocation guarantees gains or eliminates losses.
Keep an intentional cash reserve
Cash equivalents can cover near-term spending and reduce the chance that you must sell stocks after a decline. Cash has inflation and reinvestment risks, so size it for a stated liquidity need rather than treating it as a permanent return strategy.
Step 4: Implement changes with taxes and costs in mind
Use account location deliberately
In a tax-deferred retirement account, trades generally do not create an immediate capital-gains bill, although withdrawals can be taxable under the account’s rules. In a taxable account, selling can realize short- or long-term gains or losses. Roth accounts have their own contribution and withdrawal rules. Confirm the rules that apply in your jurisdiction and account before placing an order.
Choose tax lots, not just securities
When reducing an appreciated technology position, review individual tax lots, holding periods and cost bases. Selling a high-cost lot may realize less gain than selling a low-cost lot. Compare the expected tax with bid-ask spreads, commissions where applicable, fund expenses and any exit fees. A tax professional can help when the position is large, inherited, subject to special restrictions or connected to employer equity compensation.

Stage a transition when appropriate
There is no universally safest schedule. Selling everything immediately removes concentration sooner but locks in the current tax and market price. Redirecting contributions or making several planned sales lowers the risk of making one large timing decision but leaves the concentration in place longer. Set a specific schedule and maximum exposure rather than making ad hoc trades after headlines.
Mind trading and fund mechanics
Check each fund’s spread, trading volume, expense ratio, redemption rules and distribution history. Make sure a replacement fund actually changes sector, geographic or company overlap. Keep records of trade dates, quantities, tax lots and the reason for each change so that future rebalancing follows the policy.
Step 5: Rebalance by a rule, not by headlines
Investor.gov notes that some professionals review portfolios every six or 12 months, while others use preset percentage bands. Either approach can work if it is written in advance and followed consistently. Rebalancing too often can create unnecessary taxes, costs and emotional decisions.
- Choose the review date or drift bands. For example, you might review on a six- or 12-month schedule, or act only when an allocation moves outside a range you set.
- Calculate current look-through weights. Include direct holdings and each fund’s latest sector and top-company data.
- Use cash flows first. Send dividends, contributions and withdrawals toward underweight categories where practical.
- Trade the smallest number of positions needed. Consider account type, tax lots, spreads and fund fees before selling.
- Document the result. Record the new weights, realized gains and the next review date.
Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a forecast that the sold sector will fall or the purchased sector will rise. Vanguard’s Roger Aliaga-Díaz wrote on January 22, 2025, “There will always be an asset class, sector, or security that will outperform your portfolio.” Accepting that trade-off is part of maintaining a diversified plan.

How much technology exposure is too much?
No regulator or major fund provider sets one correct percentage for every investor. Exposure is too high when a technology decline would prevent you from meeting a goal, force you to sell at an unacceptable time or cause you to abandon your plan. The same percentage can be reasonable for one household and imprudent for another.
Ask these questions:
- Could you tolerate a severe decline in technology stocks without selling money needed within the next several years?
- Does your job, business, pension or private-company equity already depend on technology?
- Do several funds hold the same companies, making your effective concentration higher than the sector labels suggest?
- Would a tax bill, trading restriction or liquidity need prevent you from reducing the position quickly?
- Does your written target still match your time horizon, emergency reserve and spending plan?
Warning signs include one company dominating the portfolio, a sector weight that exceeds your policy range, employer stock that is large relative to investable assets, and a fund purchase made solely because its recent returns were strong. These are prompts to measure and plan, not automatic sell signals.
What international diversification can and cannot do
International exposure can reduce dependence on the United States and its technology leaders, but it can trail domestic stocks for many years. Vanguard illustrated this trade-off with a hypothetical investment over the 10 years ending December 31, 2024:
| Investment in Vanguard’s illustration | Value of a hypothetical $100 | Annualized return |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. stocks | $334 | 13% |
| Non-U.S. stocks | $160 | 5% |
The figures are a historical illustration for that period, not a forecast or a recommended allocation. Holding international assets means accepting country, currency, political and market-structure risks in exchange for reducing reliance on one country’s market leadership.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Selling every technology holding at once
Problem: You may create a large tax bill, lose a position that still belongs in your target and make a market-timing decision under stress.
Correction: Calculate the required reduction, redirect new money, select tax lots and use a staged schedule if that better fits your policy and tax situation.
Assuming an ETF label means diversification
Problem: A fund can be narrow, expensive or dominated by the same companies you already own.
Correction: Read the current holdings, sector weights, regional exposure, index rules and fees. Add it only if the look-through portfolio changes in a way your policy requires.

A repeatable checklist
- List every account, direct security, fund, employer position, option and cash balance.
- Obtain current fund holdings, sector weights, top positions, geographic split and fees.
- Calculate direct and look-through technology exposure and total weight in repeated companies.
- Write target ranges for stocks, bonds, cash, sectors, company sizes, regions and styles.
- Choose a maximum single-company and technology-sector weight that fits your circumstances.
- Redirect new contributions and dividends toward underweight categories.
- Before selling, compare tax lots, holding periods, account rules, spreads, fees and liquidity.
- Implement the smallest set of trades that brings the portfolio toward policy.
- Review on a six- or 12-month schedule or when a preset drift band is breached.
- Update the plan after a job change, major goal, inheritance, exercise of options or change in risk tolerance.
Bottom line
Reducing technology concentration is a portfolio-design exercise, not a prediction about the next winning sector. Measure the exposure beneath every fund, set targets that reflect your real life, diversify across asset classes and within stocks, use international and high-quality bond exposure where appropriate, and make tax-aware changes under a written rebalancing rule. That process can reduce dependence on technology stocks while preserving a deliberate role for them in a portfolio that matches your goals.
