How to Diversify a Portfolio That Is Heavily Invested in Tech Stocks

Start by measuring your real technology exposure, not just counting the funds in your account. List every holding, look through each fund’s top positions and sectors, separate single-company, technology-sector, U.S.-market, equity-market and employer-stock risks, then set a target mix that fits your goals, time horizon, tax position and ability to tolerate losses. You can often reduce concentration by directing new money to underweight areas before selling appreciated shares.

Why a portfolio can look diversified while still being a tech bet

Diversification means spreading money among investments so one risk does not determine the result. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes two necessary layers: diversification between asset categories and diversification within asset categories. Owning several funds addresses neither layer if the funds all hold the same large technology companies.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, a U.S. stock index fund, a growth fund and a technology-sector fund may have different names but substantial overlap in their largest holdings. A portfolio can therefore contain dozens of securities while still depending on the earnings, valuations and regulation of a small group of technology businesses. Count the underlying companies and sectors, not the number of account lines.

A tech-heavy portfolio combines several kinds of concentration:

  • Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
  • Single-stock risk: one company can suffer an accounting problem, product failure, lawsuit or management change.
  • Sector risk: technology companies may react similarly to interest rates, regulation, chip cycles or changes in business spending.
  • U.S.-market risk: many technology holdings are listed in the United States, so your results may depend heavily on one country’s economy and currency.
  • Equity risk: stocks as a group can fall together during recessions or market shocks, even when sectors differ.
  • Employer and compensation risk: company shares, restricted stock or options can link both your paycheck and investments to the same employer.

Adding another narrow technology fund does not solve these risks. A useful diversification decision changes at least one underlying driver of return, such as asset class, geography, company size or sector.

How much technology exposure is too much?

There is no evidence-based technology percentage that is correct for every investor. The appropriate level depends on what the money is for, when it will be needed, how much loss you can financially and emotionally withstand, other assets and income, and the tax cost of changing the portfolio.

Fidelity’s February 19, 2025 concentration guidance says that a single position representing 5% or more of investments may warrant reexamination. Fidelity also uses the warning that holding 5% of a total portfolio in one stock could be too risky. This is a screening reference, not a universal limit for every person or account. A 5% position in a diversified fund is not the same risk as 5% in one company, and a household may have additional exposure through an employer plan or stock compensation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the 5% figure as a prompt to investigate. Then ask whether the position is intentionally sized, whether you could meet your goals after a severe decline, and whether the same company appears in other funds. Your technology-sector exposure can be high even when no single stock reaches 5%.

Step 1: Build a look-through inventory of your holdings

Export current positions from every taxable account, retirement plan and employer equity program. Record the ticker or fund name, number of shares, market value, account type, cost basis where available, and whether the holding came from compensation. Include cash balances and short-term investments so the final allocation is based on the entire investable portfolio.

  1. Group positions by asset class. Label each as a stock, bond, cash or other investment. A fund that owns stocks remains an equity exposure even if its name emphasizes dividends, growth or a theme.
  2. Record each fund’s top holdings and sector weights. Use the current prospectus, fact sheet or portfolio page. Holdings and weights change, so date the snapshot.
  3. Combine duplicate companies. Add direct shares to the same company held through every mutual fund, exchange-traded fund (ETF) and workplace plan.
  4. Separate sector and geography. Calculate how much is in information technology and related technology-sensitive businesses, then note U.S. versus non-U.S. exposure.
  5. Flag concentrated positions. Mark any single stock near or above the 5% screening reference, as well as any position that would threaten your goals if it fell sharply.
  6. Include human-capital exposure. If your salary, bonus or future job prospects depend on one technology employer, treat that dependence as part of the concentration decision even though it is not shown on a brokerage statement.

Do not assume that a fund with a broad label is automatically broad. Review its largest positions and sector breakdown. If the documents do not provide a comparable figure, record it as “not stated” and avoid pretending that the exposure is known.

Step 2: Define a target allocation before choosing products

Choose the portfolio’s structure first and the funds second. Write down the purpose of the money, the earliest withdrawal date, expected withdrawals, emergency reserves held elsewhere, tolerance for a temporary decline and the account’s tax rules. A near-term spending goal generally cannot tolerate the same stock exposure as a retirement account with decades before withdrawals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your target should address four decisions:

  • Equity versus bonds and cash: Stocks provide growth potential but can lose substantial value. High-quality bonds and cash can provide stability and liquidity, although they carry inflation, interest-rate and credit risks of their own.
  • U.S. versus international stocks: International holdings add companies and economies that may not move in lockstep with U.S. technology shares. They also introduce currency, political and market-structure risks.
  • Broad versus narrow exposure: Broad-market funds spread ownership across many sectors and companies. A sector fund remains concentrated by design.
  • Control versus convenience: A multi-fund portfolio gives you control over each sleeve. A target-date fund provides one-fund management and changes its mix over time, but its glide path, underlying holdings and fees must fit your needs.

Write the target in a way you can maintain. For example, specify the asset categories you intend to own and the conditions that would trigger a review, rather than selecting a technology percentage because it recently performed well. Historical returns do not establish what will happen next.

Ways to add diversification

Building block What it adds What to check
Broad U.S. stock fund Exposure across many domestic sectors and company sizes instead of a single technology theme. Top holdings, information-technology weight, overlap with your existing funds and expense ratio.
International stock fund Companies outside the United States and returns influenced by different economies and currencies. Developed versus emerging-market coverage, regional concentration, currency policy, fees and overlap with other funds.
Bond fund or individual bonds An asset class with different primary drivers from stocks and a potential source of portfolio stability and income. Credit quality, duration or maturity, interest-rate sensitivity, costs and whether the account needs predictable cash flows.
Cash or cash equivalents Liquidity for near-term expenses and a reserve that does not depend on stock prices. Inflation risk, interest earned, deposit or fund protections and the time horizon for the money.
Target-date fund A single diversified portfolio that generally becomes more conservative as its target year approaches. Glide path, equity level at and after the target date, underlying funds, total fees and whether it includes international stocks and bonds.
Narrow sector fund Intentional exposure to a specific industry. It is not a substitute for diversification; check concentration, volatility, fees and how it fits the overall target.

Mutual funds and ETFs can make diversification easier because one purchase can own many securities, as Investor.gov explains. They still require look-through analysis: two funds can hold many of the same companies, and a broad fund can become top-heavy when a few companies dominate its index.

Step 3: Reduce concentration without creating an unnecessary tax bill

Redirect new contributions first

In a retirement plan or regular investment account, direct new contributions, dividends and distributions to categories below your target. This changes the mix without selling the appreciated technology shares. It may be the least disruptive first move when contributions are large relative to the portfolio or when selling would create a substantial taxable gain.

Use exchanges inside tax-advantaged accounts

Many retirement accounts allow you to exchange one fund for another without a current capital-gains tax bill, although plan rules, fees and investment choices vary. Confirm the account’s treatment and any restrictions before trading. A tax-free exchange can still realize an investment loss economically, so make sure the replacement fits the target rather than simply chasing a recent winner.

Sell deliberately in taxable accounts

When contributions and exchanges cannot reduce the concentration enough, compare the risk of holding the position with the tax and trading cost of selling. Review each tax lot, unrealized gain or loss, holding period, transaction fee and the effect on your tax return. You may choose to sell in stages, beginning with the lots that best reduce risk for the least tax cost, but the correct sequence depends on your circumstances.

Do not let a tax bill turn an unintended concentration into a permanent allocation. Taxes are a cost of changing the portfolio, not a reason to ignore a risk that could damage a major goal. Conversely, do not sell automatically: in a taxable account, a sale can create a liability that requires cash planning. A tax professional can help with a situation involving large gains, restricted stock, options or multiple jurisdictions.

Handle employer stock separately

Employer shares deserve a written limit because your income and portfolio can fall together. For restricted stock or options, note vesting dates, expiration dates, blackout periods, withholding and the tax treatment of each transaction. Decide in advance what happens when shares vest or become exercisable; an automatic plan to sell or diversify can prevent a growing position from becoming accidental concentration, subject to company rules and personal tax advice.

Step 4: Check for overlap before buying a “different” fund

Compare the top holdings of every candidate fund with the companies you already own directly and indirectly. Look at sector and country weights, not just fund names. If a new broad-market fund has the same largest technology companies as your current U.S. growth fund, the purchase may add less diversification than expected.

Also compare fees and trading characteristics. A lower expense ratio is useful only if the fund provides the exposure you need. Consider bid-ask spreads, commissions, minimums, securities-lending practices, tracking difference and tax efficiency where those facts are available in current fund documents. Product availability and fees can change, so verify them before investing.

Step 5: Rebalance using a rule you can follow

Rebalancing restores the target after market movements or contributions push categories away from their intended weights. You can rebalance by selling an overweight asset, buying an underweight asset, redirecting contributions, or combining these methods.

Choose either a calendar review, such as a periodic review at a frequency you can maintain, or a threshold rule that triggers action when an allocation moves materially from target. A threshold can reduce unnecessary trades during small market movements; a calendar can be simpler when account values are difficult to monitor. Record the date, target, actual allocation and action taken.

  1. Update the look-through inventory and include newly vested employer shares.
  2. Measure each asset category, geography and major company against the target.
  3. Use contributions and distributions to correct smaller gaps first.
  4. For larger gaps, evaluate tax lots, account rules, transaction costs and liquidity before selling or exchanging.
  5. Document the trade and set the next review date.

Review sooner after a major goal change, job change, inheritance, large vesting event or shift in your ability to tolerate risk. Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a forecast that the sold asset will decline or the purchased asset will rise.

What recent performance does—and does not—tell you

Strong technology performance can make concentration feel justified just as it makes the portfolio most dependent on that sector. Vanguard’s 2025 comparison for the 10 years ended December 31, 2024 illustrates how leadership can narrow: $100 hypothetically invested in U.S. stocks grew to $334 versus $160 for non-U.S. stocks; U.S. growth stocks outperformed the broad U.S. market by 1.4 times; and the “Magnificent Seven” outperformed the information-technology sector by 6.8 times. These are historical comparisons, not forecasts or a reason to reverse course based on a single period.

  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.

The lesson is concentration risk, not a prediction that technology will underperform. A diversified plan accepts that different regions and sectors will lead at different times, while avoiding the need to identify the next leader in advance.

Common mistakes when diversifying away from tech concentration

  • Counting funds instead of exposures: five overlapping funds can behave like one position.
  • Replacing one theme with another: moving from technology to a different narrow sector does not create broad diversification.
  • Ignoring bonds and cash: adding more stock sectors still leaves the portfolio exposed to an equity-market decline.
  • Using a recent return as the target: an allocation should follow goals and risk capacity, not the last decade’s winner.
  • Forgetting workplace plans: an employer’s stock fund or target-date fund may materially change household exposure.
  • Selling without tax planning: a large gain, fee or account restriction can change the best implementation route.
  • Rebalancing by emotion: abandoning a plan after a market drop can lock in losses and recreate concentration elsewhere.
  • Assuming diversification prevents losses: diversified assets can decline together. Vanguard’s standard disclosure is explicit that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.

Three practical decision paths

You have high gains in a taxable technology position

First direct all new money and reinvested distributions to underweight categories. Then model partial sales by tax lot and compare the resulting tax with the risk reduction. Spread transactions over time only if that still brings the portfolio toward the target and does not leave an unacceptable concentration.

Your retirement plan offers limited funds

Use the broadest available stock and bond options, inspect their top holdings and sector weights, and coordinate the plan with investments in other accounts. If the plan’s menu cannot provide a needed exposure, the allocation in an IRA or taxable account may fill the gap, subject to taxes and fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your portfolio is mostly employer stock

Separate shares that are vested and liquid from awards that are subject to restrictions. Establish a written diversification rule for future vesting, check trading windows and withholding, and keep enough cash outside the employer’s stock for near-term needs. Consider your employment risk when deciding how much additional technology exposure belongs in other accounts.

When professional help is worth considering

Independent financial or tax advice can be valuable when a single position is a large share of net worth, selling would create a major gain, equity compensation has complex tax treatment, a concentrated holding is inherited, or several family accounts must be coordinated. Bring the full inventory, cost basis, vesting schedule, goals and planned withdrawals. A professional can help compare tax cost with concentration risk, but you remain responsible for checking fees, conflicts and the suitability of any recommendation.

Bottom line

Diversifying a tech-heavy portfolio is a measurement and implementation exercise, not a hunt for one perfect technology percentage. Look through every fund, identify single-company and employer overlap, set a goal-based mix of U.S. stocks, international stocks, bonds and cash, and reduce excess exposure with new contributions, exchanges or carefully planned sales. Rebalance under a written rule and remember that diversification lowers concentration risk but cannot eliminate investment losses.
