How to Diversify a Portfolio That Is Heavily Invested in Chip Stocks

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Start by measuring your total semiconductor exposure, including the chips hidden inside funds, then set a target mix that matches your goal, time horizon, taxes and risk capacity. Reduce oversized positions deliberately—through staged sales, new contributions, or both—and redirect the money across broad equities, non-chip sectors, international assets, bonds and cash. Review the portfolio at the look-through level and rebalance when it drifts.

This is an educational framework, not individualized investment advice. The right destination allocation depends on facts such as your account type, unrealized gains, need for income and ability to withstand losses.

Why a chip-heavy portfolio needs two kinds of diversification

Owning several semiconductor companies is not the same as owning a diversified portfolio. A portfolio can hold ten chip stocks and still be driven by the same industry cycle, customer demand, manufacturing constraints, export rules and valuation changes.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines diversification as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” Its Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing identifies stocks, bonds, cash equivalents, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as building blocks. Diversification therefore works at two levels:

  • Across asset categories: combining growth-oriented assets with assets that may behave differently, such as high-quality bonds or cash.
  • Within each category: spreading equity exposure across sectors, company sizes and geographies rather than concentrating it in semiconductors.

Vanguard Professional described hyper-concentration on January 4, 2026, as “having a few stocks, one, two or three stocks and a large balance associated with those.” That structure leaves the investor exposed to company-specific, or idiosyncratic, risks and reduces the benefits of a multi-asset portfolio.

Fidelity’s concentration guidance provides a useful warning signal, not a universal rule: a single position representing 5% or more of investments may be worth reexamining, and its sector guidance calls more than 5% in one stock a concentrated position that may increase risk. The 5% reference applies to one stock; it does not establish a maximum for the entire semiconductor sector.

Step 1: Map your real semiconductor exposure

Before selling anything, build one inventory of every account and holding. Include taxable brokerage accounts, workplace retirement plans, individual retirement accounts, employer stock, mutual funds, ETFs and cash. Use current statements and fund holdings rather than relying on ticker names.

Create a look-through inventory

Record for each holding Why it matters
Market value and percentage of the total portfolio Shows whether a single position or account dominates your outcome.
Account type and tax status A sale in a taxable account can create a gain; trades inside many retirement accounts generally have different tax treatment.
Sector and industry Separates semiconductor exposure from other technology and non-chip sectors.
Geography and currency exposure Reveals whether your portfolio is tied to one country or region.
Company-size mix Identifies whether the portfolio is concentrated in a few mega-cap companies or one size segment.
Largest underlying positions Shows overlap between a fund and stocks you already own directly.
Fees, liquidity and tracking approach Helps compare replacement investments on more than ticker count.

Add direct semiconductor holdings to the estimated semiconductor exposure inside each fund. For example, an investor who owns Nvidia, AMD and TSMC directly may also have material exposure to those companies through a technology ETF, a broad-market index fund and a workplace plan. Count the underlying positions only once when estimating total economic exposure.

Do not mistake a long holdings list for diversification

A narrow-industry fund can own dozens of companies while remaining highly concentrated. Fidelity’s disclosure for the Fidelity Select Semiconductors Portfolio (FSELX), accessed in 2026, says it normally invests at least 80% of assets in semiconductor and semiconductor-equipment companies. Fidelity warns that narrow-industry funds can be more volatile than diversified funds and the overall market. The relevant question is not “How many tickers do I own?” but “What risks drive most of my balance?”

Estimate concentration in three ways

  1. Single-stock weight: divide each stock’s market value by the total portfolio value. Flag any position near or above the 5% reference used in Fidelity’s 2025 guidance for reexamination.
  2. Industry weight: add direct chip stocks, semiconductor-equipment companies and the semiconductor portions of funds.
  3. Factor and geography overlap: note repeated exposure to the same company size, country, currency or growth factor even when the holdings have different names.

Write down the result before deciding what to buy. A clear baseline prevents a sale from being followed by an accidental repurchase of the same risk through another fund.

Step 2: Define the destination allocation

There is no responsible single percentage for “how much to keep in chips.” Your target should fit the purpose of the money, the date you will need it, your tax situation and your ability to tolerate a large drawdown without selling at the wrong time. A portfolio for a long-term retirement goal can hold more volatile equities than money needed for a near-term purchase, but the decision is personal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set target ranges before choosing replacement funds. Fidelity recommends diversification across stocks, bonds, market capitalizations, sectors and geography, with rebalancing to maintain the intended risk level. The SEC notes that asset categories can behave differently under changing market conditions.

Destination component Problem it can address Questions to answer
Broad domestic equities Reduces dependence on semiconductors while retaining long-term equity growth potential. How much of the domestic market is already represented indirectly by your existing funds?
Non-chip sectors Adds businesses whose revenues and cost structures are not primarily tied to chip demand. Would a broad fund provide this exposure more reliably than selecting another handful of sectors?
International equities Reduces reliance on one country, economy and currency. What geographic mix fits your goal and tolerance for currency and political risk?
Bonds Can provide a different source of return and may reduce the portfolio’s dependence on equity valuations. What credit quality, maturity and interest-rate risk can you accept?
Cash or cash equivalents Provides liquidity for near-term needs and can reduce pressure to sell volatile assets during a downturn. How much must remain readily available for emergencies or planned spending?

Use ranges rather than pretending that one exact percentage is optimal. Document why each range exists, which account will hold it and what event would cause you to revise it.

Step 3: Choose a deliberate way to reduce the chip concentration

Once the destination is clear, select a selling method that balances risk reduction, taxes and practicality. The best approach may differ between a taxable account, a retirement account and employer stock.

Immediate reduction

Selling part of an oversized position at once removes concentration quickly. This can be appropriate when the position threatens a near-term goal, violates your written risk limit or has become too large to tolerate. In a taxable account, estimate the gain or loss on each tax lot and consider whether the trade could push you into a different tax bracket or affect other tax items. A tax professional can address rules that depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Staged sales

Divide the reduction into preplanned transactions over several dates. Staging can make the decision easier psychologically and may avoid committing all proceeds at one market price, but it leaves the concentration in place until the schedule is completed. Set the dates and target position size in advance rather than allowing short-term price moves to rewrite the plan.

Use new money first

Direct new contributions, dividends and distributions to underweight asset categories. This can move the portfolio toward its targets without selling appreciated shares. The method works best when contributions are large enough relative to the oversized position and when the investor can wait for the allocation to converge.

Combine sales with tax-aware lot selection

In a taxable account, compare holding periods, unrealized gains and losses, and the cost basis of each lot. Losses may offset gains subject to applicable rules; selling a low-basis lot can create a larger taxable gain. In retirement accounts, check the plan’s trading rules and investment menu. Employer-stock plans may impose blackout periods or other restrictions, so verify them before placing an order.

Fidelity’s 2025 concentration guidance recommends identifying a strategy for reducing a large position and then choosing a diversified portfolio for reinvestment. Do not sell a chip holding merely to leave the proceeds uninvested; assign each dollar to a destination category before trading.

Step 4: Test every replacement for overlap

Adding an S&P 500 fund or another broad-market ETF may improve diversification, but it does not automatically remove semiconductor exposure. Large semiconductor companies can be among the largest holdings in broad U.S. indexes. Compare the candidate fund’s current top holdings and sector weights with your direct positions and other funds. Fund names and holdings change, so check the current prospectus and holdings before trading.

Candidate What it can add What to check
Broad-market equity fund Exposure to many domestic companies and sectors in one vehicle. Its current semiconductor weight, top holdings, market-cap bias, fee and tracking method.
International equity fund Companies outside your home market and a different geographic revenue mix. Country concentration, currency exposure, emerging-market share and overlap with existing multinational holdings.
Bond fund Fixed-income exposure that may behave differently from equities. Credit quality, duration, interest-rate sensitivity, fees and whether the fund fits your time horizon.
Cash or cash equivalent Liquidity and a reserve for near-term spending. Whether the yield, access and purchasing-power risk fit the purpose of the money.

Compare candidates by asset class, sector overlap, company-size mix, geography, volatility, fees, taxes, liquidity, tracking approach and fit with your time horizon. A portfolio with four complementary funds can be more diversified than one with twelve overlapping technology funds.

Step 5: Implement the transition in the right order

  1. Write the target ranges. Specify broad equities, non-chip sectors, international equities, bonds and cash, plus any maximum you want for one stock or one industry.
  2. Identify the account for each trade. Note taxable versus retirement status, employer restrictions and available investment options.
  3. Prioritize the largest risk. Reduce a single stock or fund that is farthest above its limit before fine-tuning smaller differences.
  4. Place destination orders. Invest proceeds according to the written ranges instead of buying whichever asset has recently performed best.
  5. Redirect future cash flows. Change contribution elections and dividend instructions so the concentration does not rebuild.
  6. Record the transaction. Save the date, amount, tax lot, destination and reason. This creates an audit trail for the next review.

If you are unsure whether an order is suitable for your tax situation or retirement plan, pause and obtain qualified tax or financial advice rather than guessing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 6: Rebalance and review at the look-through level

Rebalancing restores the risk level you selected after market movements change the weights. Choose either a calendar review or tolerance bands—for example, reviewing on a set schedule or when a holding moves materially outside its target range. The specific interval and band should reflect your costs, taxes and ability to monitor the accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use contributions and distributions to correct underweights before creating taxable sales where practical. When a sale is necessary, apply the same tax-lot and account analysis used for the initial transition. Fidelity identifies rebalancing as a key way to maintain an intended risk level.

At each review, repeat the look-through check. A fund merger, index change or market rally can alter sector weights without any trade by you. Verify current prospectuses and holdings, especially for narrow-industry funds whose mandates and portfolios may change.

Worked examples

An investor with Nvidia, AMD, TSMC and chip ETFs

Suppose an investor owns those three companies directly and also holds two semiconductor ETFs. The first step is not to pick a sixth ticker. List the value of each position, add the semiconductor companies held inside the ETFs, and check whether a workplace plan or broad technology fund owns the same names.

If one stock exceeds the investor’s written limit, the investor could trim that position, stage sales, or direct all new contributions elsewhere while considering taxes. The proceeds might be split among a broad domestic fund, international equities, bonds and cash according to the investor’s target ranges. The exact split cannot be determined from the stock list alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A taxable account with large unrealized gains

An investor may recognize that a chip position is too large but face a substantial gain. The investor can list tax lots, identify lots with losses or smaller gains, coordinate sales with other realized gains and use new contributions to underweight categories. Staging can reduce exposure gradually, but it should have a defined end point and target position size.

A retirement account with limited fund choices

In a workplace plan, the menu may not include every desired asset class. Use the available broad equity, international, bond and stable-value or cash-like options to approximate the written allocation. Review employer trading restrictions and contribution elections. An outside IRA or taxable account should be analyzed together with the plan because diversification is a household-portfolio question, not a one-account question.

How much AI or semiconductor exposure should remain?

No universal percentage answers this question. The 5% figure from Fidelity is a warning reference for a single stock, not a rule that says every investor should hold no more than 5% in all semiconductor companies. A diversified investor may intentionally keep a satellite position in a sector they understand, while another investor may need little or none because the money has a near-term purpose or the existing indirect exposure is already high.

Set a ceiling you can explain in writing: why the exposure exists, what loss you could tolerate, which account will hold it and what event will trigger a trim. Count direct and indirect exposure together. If the position grows above the ceiling because of price appreciation, rebalance rather than changing the rule after the fact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Counting tickers instead of risks: Five semiconductor funds may all own the same leading companies. Use look-through holdings and sector weights.
  • Assuming an S&P 500 fund eliminates chip risk: Check its current semiconductor allocation and top holdings before buying.
  • Replacing one concentrated stock with another: Moving from a chip maker to a different single technology company does not solve single-stock risk. Use diversified vehicles and multiple asset categories.
  • Selling everything without a destination: A large cash balance can create a different mismatch with a long-term goal. Write the target allocation first.
  • Ignoring taxes and restrictions: Review tax lots, holding periods, account rules and employer blackout periods before trading.
  • Letting a temporary price move set the policy: Predefined ranges and review dates are more reliable than reacting to headlines.
  • Never checking again: Market movements and fund changes can rebuild concentration. Schedule a look-through review and rebalance when needed.

A concise implementation checklist

  • Inventory every stock, fund, retirement account and employer position.
  • Calculate each holding’s portfolio weight and aggregate semiconductor exposure.
  • Review the largest underlying positions in every fund.
  • Write target ranges for domestic equities, non-chip sectors, international assets, bonds and cash.
  • Choose immediate, staged or contribution-driven reductions based on risk and taxes.
  • Check tax lots, account type and trading restrictions before placing orders.
  • Redirect proceeds, contributions and distributions to the destination allocation.
  • Set a calendar review or tolerance-band rule.
  • Recheck fund holdings and rebalance at the look-through level.

A chip-heavy portfolio becomes more resilient when concentration is measured honestly, reduced with a written plan and replaced by exposures that solve different risks. The objective is not to predict the next semiconductor cycle; it is to make the portfolio’s risk fit the job the money must do.
