How do I dispute an unfamiliar charge on a bank statement? First check the transaction details and whether an authorized user or subscription explains it. If it still looks unauthorized, contact your bank, credit union, or card issuer promptly using a trusted number or its secure dispute channel. The next steps and deadlines depend on whether the charge was made with a debit card or other electronic fund transfer (EFT), or with a credit card. This guide covers U.S. consumer accounts; rules and procedures may differ elsewhere.
Check the charge, then report it promptly
Write down the posted date, amount, exact merchant descriptor, and account. Compare the entry with receipts, online purchases, subscriptions, travel, authorized users’ activity, and payments routed through a processor whose name may differ from the seller’s. An unfamiliar descriptor is not proof of fraud, but a small test charge or a transaction that still does not make sense deserves prompt attention. The CFPB advises consumers to contact their bank or card provider immediately if they suspect an unauthorized debit or charge (CFPB guidance on monitoring accounts).

Call the number printed on your card or statement, or use the provider’s authenticated website or app. Give the transaction date and amount, say clearly that you do not recognize or authorize it, and ask for it to be handled as a disputed or unauthorized transaction. Ask whether to lock or replace the card or other access device and whether to change your PIN. Record the date and method of contact, the representative’s name if available, and the claim or reference number.
Before relying on a deadline, identify the payment type. Debit-card purchases and many other electronic transfers generally follow Regulation E; credit-card billing errors generally follow Regulation Z. The rules below are U.S. federal guidance, and your statement’s dispute instructions can specify where and how to submit a notice.

Which dispute deadline applies?
| Transaction type | Notice route and timing | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card or other covered EFT | Notify the financial institution as soon as possible. CFPB guidance says to report an unauthorized withdrawal no later than 60 days after the statement showing it was sent; if a card or PIN was lost or stolen, notice within two business days of learning of the loss or theft is important to the liability limit. | These are Regulation E procedures; whether a transfer is covered and the liability consequences depend on the facts and timing. See the Regulation E liability rule. |
| Credit card | Call promptly, then send a written billing-error notice to the billing-dispute address or by the method in the billing-rights notice. Generally, the issuer must receive notice within 60 days after the first periodic statement reflecting the error was transmitted. | The billing-dispute address may differ from the payment address. See Regulation Z’s billing-error rule. |
Debit card and other electronic transfers
Regulation E covers many consumer electronic transfers, including debit-card purchases, ATM withdrawals, some online bill payments, and preauthorized deductions. Report a suspected error as soon as possible and follow the institution’s instructions. If your first report is by phone, the institution may ask you to confirm it in writing; respond within the period it gives you, because failure to do so can affect provisional credit.
The statement-based 60-day notice advice and the two-business-day period after learning that an access device was lost or stolen are not interchangeable. Federal liability tiers can be up to $50, up to $500, or potentially more depending on notice timing and circumstances; there is no universal $50 cap for every debit-card fraud claim. The CFPB explains the time limits and investigation process in its EFT error-resolution guidance.

Credit-card billing errors
For a credit-card charge, contact the issuer quickly and send the formal notice to the address or through the method identified in the billing-rights notice. Include enough information for the issuer to identify your account and understand the issue: the charge’s date, amount, description, and why you believe it is an error. Keep a copy and proof of delivery or submission. The CFPB’s credit-card billing guidance explains the written-notice route.

If the dispute concerns goods or services not accepted or delivered as agreed, Regulation Z does not require you to contact the merchant first before sending the billing-error notice to the creditor. Contacting the merchant may still help resolve an ordinary service problem, but it is not a prerequisite to that statutory notice route. For purchases funded through a payment intermediary, coverage can depend on how the credit funded the transaction and the specific facts.

What happens during the investigation?
For debit and other EFT errors
Under CFPB guidance, a bank generally has 10 business days to investigate an EFT error, or 20 business days for an account opened less than 30 days before the notice. If it cannot complete the investigation in that initial period, it generally must provisionally credit the disputed amount while continuing its work; it may withhold up to $50, and exceptions apply. The general outside period is 45 days, with up to 90 days for certain cases, including foreign transactions, point-of-sale debit purchases, and transactions made within 30 days of opening an account. If the bank finds an error, it must correct it within one business day and report its findings within three business days, according to the CFPB’s investigation-timeframe guidance.
For credit-card billing errors
An issuer generally must acknowledge written notice within 30 days unless it resolves the matter sooner, and it has up to two complete billing cycles to finish its investigation. Continue paying undisputed charges on time. CFPB guidance says you do not have to pay the disputed charge or related finance charges while the dispute is pending; follow the issuer’s statement and notice instructions about the disputed balance.

Keep records and respond to the decision
Keep the statement, transaction details, receipts, correspondence, claim number, copies of notices, and dated notes of calls together. If an EFT investigation concludes that no error occurred, you can ask the bank for the information it relied on; the CFPB says it must provide that information promptly on request. If a credit-card issuer finds no billing error, it must explain its decision in writing and state what amount is owed and when it is due. You may also request documentary evidence of the alleged indebtedness. Note any resulting payment deadline and ask the provider what appeal or complaint route is available if you still disagree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not assume a police report or affidavit is always required. Regulation Z’s official interpretation says an issuer may not automatically deny a claim solely because the consumer did not comply with a particular request such as filing a police report, though missing information can affect its investigation.
