You may still be able to deposit money after the counter closes, but only through a channel your bank supports. Check, in order: a deposit-taking ATM or cash machine, your bank’s mobile cheque-deposit feature, a participating postal or shared-counter service, or a branch night depository. Before using one, confirm that it accepts your bank, account and deposit type, then check the cutoff, limits, fees and funds-availability rule. Keep the receipt or digital confirmation.
Start with the channel your bank actually supports
“The branch is closed” does not mean every after-hours option is available. An ATM near you may accept deposits only for its own bank, a cash machine may accept cheques but not cash, and a postal counter may serve only participating institutions. Use your bank’s official locator or service instructions rather than assuming any nearby machine or counter will work.

- Credited: the bank records the amount in your account, which can occur later if you miss a cutoff or use a non-business day.
- Available: the amount can be spent or withdrawn. A hold or additional processing time can delay this even after the account shows a credit.
A channel accepting your item proves only that the bank received it through that route; it does not guarantee immediate use of the funds.

After-hours deposit options compared
| Channel | Usually accepts | What you need | Timing and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank ATM or cash-deposit machine | Cash, cheques, or both, depending on the machine and bank | Often a bank card and PIN; some machines require envelopes or follow on-screen instructions | Cutoff, receipt, limits and holds are bank- and location-specific. A machine may not accept another bank’s customers. |
| Mobile banking app | Eligible cheques; generally not physical cash | Bank app, eligible account and cheque meeting the bank’s image, currency, endorsement and amount rules | Submission time, cheque conditions and account type affect processing. Keep the cheque until the bank says it may be destroyed. |
| Participating postal or shared counter | Cash and/or cheques for listed banks | Bank card or personalized paying-in slip, plus the bank’s required deposit envelope for cheques where specified | Participating banks, limits, fees and next-working-day rules vary. Never put cash in a cheque-only envelope. |
| Night depository | Sealed deposits accepted by that branch | Bank-approved bag or envelope, paying-in documentation and access to the depository | The deposit may be treated as received only when bank staff remove and process it, not when you drop it in. |
Using an ATM or cash-deposit machine
Confirm the machine and item first
Look for a deposit-enabled machine listed by your bank. The machine should explicitly indicate whether it accepts cash, cheques, or both. Emirates NBD’s UAE branch guidance, for example, lists automated services for depositing cash or cheques; that is evidence of the bank’s own service, not proof that every UAE ATM accepts deposits for every bank.
Some banks require you to use your own debit card, while others identify the account through a card, account number or another method. Follow the machine’s instructions exactly and do not insert an item if the screen does not identify your bank account or deposit type as eligible.
Prepare and complete the transaction
- Sort cash and cheques and remove clips, staples and other objects the machine could reject.
- Insert your card if required and choose Deposit, then select the account and item type.
- Count cash carefully and enter cheques one at a time if the machine requests it. Confirm the displayed total before accepting it.
- Wait for the machine to finish and print a receipt. If it returns an item, keep the item and note the reason shown on screen.
- Check your account later for the credited amount and any hold. Keep the receipt until the deposit is fully available and reconciled with your records.
Cutoffs are local and method-specific
Wells Fargo’s US guidance says most of its ATM locations have a 9 p.m. local cutoff, while its mobile cutoff is 9 p.m. Pacific Time. Those are examples for that bank and method, not a universal 9 p.m. rule. The applicable cutoff can vary by location, account and item. A deposit after the cutoff or on a non-business day is generally credited on the next business day under Wells Fargo’s stated policy, and a hold may still apply.

Depositing a cheque in your banking app
Check eligibility before taking a photograph
Mobile cheque deposit is an option only if your bank offers it and the cheque meets its conditions. Typical conditions can include the currency, cheque type, payable name, endorsement wording, image quality, amount, account type and how soon after issue the cheque is deposited. The bank’s current app instructions control; a cheque that looks acceptable at a counter can still be rejected in an app.
Submit it correctly
- Open the official banking app and choose the cheque-deposit function for the account that should receive the money.
- Endorse the back exactly as the app or bank directs. Do not add wording that conflicts with the bank’s instructions.
- Photograph the front and endorsed back in good light, with all corners visible and no glare.
- Enter the amount exactly as written, review the account and accept the disclosure about processing and holds.
- Save the confirmation number or screenshot. Store the original cheque securely and follow the bank’s retention instruction; do not destroy it merely because the app accepted the images.
Santander UK explains that cheque timing differs among its app, cash-machine and Post Office routes, and that cheque type and deposit timing affect the result. An app confirmation therefore means the submission was received, not necessarily that the money is spendable immediately.
Using a Post Office or other shared counter in the UK
Check that your bank participates
UK Post Office everyday-banking guidance lists bank-by-bank cash and cheque services. Availability, eligible accounts, paperwork, limits and charges vary by institution. Use the Post Office listing for your bank and confirm the individual branch offers the service before travelling.

Cash deposits
The Post Office says cash paid in using a bank card normally shows in the account the same day, while a payment made with a paying-in slip normally shows on the next working day. The bank sets the applicable limits and may charge a fee. “Normally” is not a guarantee of immediate spending power: a bank’s own processing and availability rules still apply.

Cheque deposits and the envelope rule
For a cheque, the Post Office says you may need the cheque, your bank’s personalized paying-in slip where applicable, and the bank’s deposit envelope. Its instruction is explicit: “Please do not enclose cash.” A cheque-only envelope is not a cash-deposit method. If you need to pay in both items, ask the counter which separate process and paperwork your bank supports.
Do not substitute a generic envelope when the bank requires a branded or personalized one. The Post Office notes that most branches stock deposit envelopes, but the bank’s own requirements determine whether your deposit will be accepted.
Leaving a deposit in a night depository
A night depository is a secure slot or compartment at a branch that accepts a sealed deposit while the counter is closed. It is available only where the bank provides one and may require a bank-issued bag, envelope, paying-in slip and account details.

- Obtain the bank’s approved bag or envelope and complete every field on the paying-in documentation.
- Count the cash and list cheques according to the bank’s instructions. Keep a duplicate record before sealing the package.
- Seal the package and place it in the designated night-depository slot, not through an ordinary mail opening.
- Record the date and time and retain any receipt, key, reference or camera-labeled drop confirmation.
- Monitor the account and contact the branch if the amount is not credited within the bank’s stated processing window.
Peoples Bank states that a night-depository deposit is considered received when the bank removes it. That means the time you drop it off may not be the official receipt time, especially over a weekend or holiday.

How cutoffs, weekends and holds change the result
A bank can use different cutoffs for the counter, ATM, mobile app and electronic transfers. The cutoff can also be expressed in local time or, for an app, in a time zone that differs from your location. Wells Fargo’s published examples distinguish a 9 p.m. local ATM cutoff from a 9 p.m. Pacific Time mobile cutoff.
If you submit after the relevant cutoff, on a Saturday or Sunday, or on a bank holiday, the bank may date the transaction for the next business day. “Next business day” means the next day the bank processes that type of transaction, not necessarily the next calendar day.
Funds availability is a separate question. A bank may credit a cheque while placing a hold, or show an ATM deposit as pending until it verifies the amount. Before spending against an after-hours deposit, read the receipt, app message or account disclosure for the available date. If the money is needed for a payment due immediately, use only funds already shown as available.

| Example | What the published guidance says | Limit of the example |
|---|---|---|
| Wells Fargo, United States | Most ATM locations list a 9 p.m. local cutoff; the mobile cutoff example is 9 p.m. Pacific Time. After-cutoff and non-business-day deposits are generally credited the next business day, with possible holds. | These times apply to the bank’s stated US operations and can vary by location, method and account. |
| TD Bank, United States | Store, ATM and mobile/electronic deposits have separate cutoff and availability tables. | Do not apply one channel’s cutoff to another bank or method. |
| Santander UK | Cheque processing expectations differ for app, cash-machine and Post Office deposits, with conditions on cheque type and timing. | The route and cheque must meet Santander UK’s current eligibility rules. |
| Post Office, United Kingdom | Card-based cash deposits normally show the same day; slip-based deposits normally show the next working day. Bank-specific limits and fees apply. | Only participating banks and services are covered; this is not a universal UK rule. |
| Emirates NBD, United Arab Emirates | Branch guidance lists automated cash- and cheque-deposit services. | Availability depends on the bank, machine and account; it does not extend to unrelated ATMs. |
| HSBC UK | Cash deposited through named alternative channels counts toward the bank’s cash-deposit limits. | Use the current HSBC UK limit and channel list for your account. |
A practical decision process for tonight
- Classify the item. Decide whether you have cash, a cheque, or both. An app can generally handle only eligible cheques, not physical cash.
- Open your bank’s official channel list. Look for deposit-taking ATMs, mobile cheque deposit, participating postal counters and night depositories.
- Match the account and item. Confirm that the channel accepts your bank, account type, currency and amount, and whether a card, slip, envelope or endorsement is required.
- Check timing. Note the cutoff in the relevant time zone, the next-business-day rule and the stated funds-availability date.
- Check cost and limits. Bank-specific limits and fees can apply, particularly at shared counters and alternative channels.
- Make the deposit and capture proof. Keep the ATM receipt, app confirmation or counter receipt; for a night depository, record the drop time and package details.
- Verify posting. Compare the credited amount with your record and wait for any hold to expire before treating the funds as spendable.
Common problems and how to handle them
The machine rejects the cash or cheque
Stop and read the rejection message. The item may be outside the machine’s accepted currency, condition or amount rules, or the machine may accept only customers of its own bank. Do not keep forcing the item into the slot. Use a listed deposit machine, app or counter instead, and retain the rejected item.

The deposit is missing after the expected date
Compare the receipt or confirmation with the account number, amount and submission time. If the deposit was after cutoff, on a non-business day or in a night depository, wait through the bank’s stated processing window. Then contact the bank with the reference number, location, date and amount; do not discard your evidence.
The account shows a credit but the money cannot be spent
Look for a hold, pending status or separate “available balance” figure. Cheques are commonly subject to verification, and a credit entry is not the same as release for spending. Ask the bank for the exact availability date and the reason for any hold.
The postal counter asks for paperwork you do not have
Do not improvise with a plain envelope or place cash in a cheque envelope. Obtain the personalized paying-in slip or bank-approved envelope, or use another channel confirmed by your bank. The Post Office’s participating-bank instructions determine what that counter can accept.
Protect yourself and keep a complete record
- Use only the bank’s official app and a deposit channel identified by the bank.
- Count cash privately before and after the transaction; never hand an unsealed package to an unofficial intermediary.
- Photograph or copy the paying-in slip, cheque details and sealed package record where the bank permits it.
- Keep receipts and app confirmations until the amount is credited and available, then retain them according to your own record-keeping needs.
- Never share your banking password, one-time code or full card details with someone offering to make an after-hours deposit.
The safest route is the one your bank explicitly supports for the exact item you hold. Confirm the cutoff and availability date before relying on the deposit for a payment.
