Your decision depends on how its concentrated growth exposures, private-company holdings, gearing, currencies and market-price discount overlap with the rest of your investments and with your financial needs.
The most useful test is therefore a whole-portfolio review: identify duplicated risks, check whether you can tolerate substantial losses and volatility, and decide whether you need long-term capital growth rather than dependable income or near-term liquidity. The available evidence supports that framework, not a universal percentage allocation.

What Scottish Mortgage is designed to do
Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC is a listed, closed-end investment trust managed by Baillie Gifford. Its stated objective in the 2026 Annual Report is “The objective is to maximise total return from a portfolio of long term investments chosen on a global basis enabling the Company to provide capital and dividend growth.” In practice, that means pursuing long-term growth from companies selected worldwide, rather than targeting a stable income stream or capital protection.

Management is not constrained by fixed sector or geographic limits, although the board monitors concentration and diversity. A closed-end structure gives the trust a permanent pool of capital: shareholder purchases and sales do not normally force the manager to trade holdings, which can support patient ownership of private businesses. Shares in the trust still trade on the stock market, so their price can move above or below the net asset value (NAV) of the underlying portfolio.

Why a high holding count does not settle the diversification question
Diversification means spreading money across investments with different drivers, products and markets. It can reduce dependence on one holding or one market and may smooth returns, but it cannot remove investment risk. A portfolio can contain many securities while remaining exposed to the same economic themes.
Scottish Mortgage illustrates that distinction. Baillie Gifford’s factsheet dated 30 September 2026 listed 48 publicly traded companies and 53 private companies, yet the 30 largest holdings accounted for 81.2% of total assets. Space Exploration Technologies alone represented 15.0%. The first ten holdings made up 52.2%. The trust is therefore broad in the number of names but concentrated in the effect that its largest positions can have on returns.
Compare those risks with your other funds, shares, pensions and workplace plans. Repeated exposure to large technology companies, artificial-intelligence infrastructure, US or Asian equities, emerging markets, private-company valuations or foreign currencies can leave the whole portfolio dependent on a relatively small set of outcomes. The trust’s 87% active share versus the FTSE All-World Index shows that it differs markedly from that benchmark; active share does not mean low risk or prove that it diversifies everything else you own.

Portfolio analytics dated 31 August 2026 describes a high-conviction public and private-company portfolio with themes including cloud and artificial-intelligence infrastructure, digital finance, transport and healthcare innovation.

Compare Scottish Mortgage with the portfolio you already own
Map duplicated holdings and drivers
Look through each fund and account, not just its label. Record the largest underlying companies, sector tendencies, countries of revenue, currencies and investment themes. A global index fund may already own several of Scottish Mortgage’s large listed positions. A technology fund, venture-style investment or employer share plan can add further concentration even when the account names appear different.
Mark both direct duplicates and indirect overlaps. Two companies may operate in different industries but depend on the same interest-rate environment, cloud spending cycle, semiconductor supply chain or appetite for speculative growth. The relevant question is how much of your total wealth would suffer if those common drivers weakened.
Separate public and private exposure
Private companies were 24.9% of total assets in the 30 September 2026 factsheet. Their valuations may be based on funding rounds, models or other less frequent transactions rather than a continuously quoted price. That can make reported NAV appear smoother than the price of a comparable listed asset, while reducing your ability to sell quickly at a known value.
Include private equity funds, venture investments, unlisted employee shares and property partnerships in the same review. A private holding can grow into a large position inside the trust, increasing the impact of a later markdown or failed exit.
Account for gearing across all accounts
The factsheet reported 4% net gearing and 6% gross gearing. Borrowing adds to exposure when markets rise and increases losses when assets fall; interest and refinancing conditions also matter. Add the trust’s leverage to any margin loan, leveraged fund, mortgage-dependent investment or other borrowing in your own finances. The combination may be unsuitable even if each component looks modest in isolation.

Examine currency and emerging-market risk
The trust is global, with 63.0% in North America and 19.7% in Asia in the reported geographic breakdown. Exchange rates can change the sterling value of overseas assets and dividends. The trust also identifies emerging-market risks, including political and regulatory changes, lower liquidity and settlement difficulties. Check whether your other investments already create a large US-dollar, Asian or emerging-market exposure and whether your future spending is in sterling or another currency.

Understand the price-to-NAV mechanism
An investment trust’s quoted share price is not the same thing as its NAV. On 30 September 2026, Scottish Mortgage’s 1,590.50-pence share price was 7.9% below its 1,726.85-pence NAV per share. The discount can widen or narrow independently of changes in the underlying companies. Your return therefore reflects both portfolio performance and the movement in the market price relative to NAV.
A discount is not proof that the shares are cheap: it may persist or widen, particularly when investors are avoiding growth assets or private-company exposure. Conversely, a narrowing discount can boost the share price even if the NAV changes little. Review the discount history and the trust’s policy, but do not base the decision on one date’s percentage alone.
Choose the role, rather than starting with a percentage
Growth satellite
A satellite position may make sense when the rest of your assets already supplies broad exposure to shares, bonds and cash, and you deliberately want a focused, long-horizon growth sleeve. You must be able to tolerate substantial price swings and the possibility that the trust’s concentrated themes lag for years. The position should be assessed by its effect on total-portfolio risk, not by the number of companies inside the trust.
Major or core holding
Making Scottish Mortgage a large holding requires a higher standard of evidence. Test whether its top holdings, growth style, private assets, foreign currencies and gearing would dominate your outcome. A large allocation can be inconsistent with a portfolio whose other funds already track global equities or technology-heavy benchmarks. You also need enough accessible, less volatile assets to cover foreseeable spending without selling during a sharp drawdown.

Smaller allocation or no allocation
Reducing or omitting the trust can be rational if you need regular income, expect to invest for less than five years, cannot tolerate substantial short-term volatility or capital loss, or already own similar concentrated growth exposures. Scottish Mortgage itself warns that it may not suit investors concerned about short-term performance, seeking regular income or investing for under five years. A broad, lower-cost or less concentrated alternative may better match those constraints, but the appropriate substitute depends on your existing portfolio and objectives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step decision process
- Define the job for the money. Write down whether the capital is for retirement growth, a house deposit, education, emergency reserves or another goal. Record when it may be needed and whether withdrawals are flexible.
- Measure loss capacity. Estimate how a 30%, 40% or larger fall in this position would affect your ability to pay bills and meet goals. Include the possibility that the discount to NAV widens at the same time as underlying assets decline.
- Build an exposure map. For every account, list the largest companies, asset classes, sectors, regions, currencies and private or illiquid assets. Add the Scottish Mortgage figures as a separate line and identify overlaps.
- Stress-test common drivers. Consider a sell-off in expensive growth shares, a fall in US technology stocks, weaker Asian markets, sterling appreciation, a private-company markdown and higher borrowing costs. Ask what proportion of the whole portfolio could be affected by each event.
- Check income and liquidity. The historical dividend yield was 0.3% on the dated factsheet and is not guaranteed. Decide whether you can fund spending from other cash or income sources without relying on trust distributions or a favorable share price.
- Review costs and tax. Include the reported 0.33% ongoing charge, dealing costs, platform fees and any tax consequences in the account you would use. The charge is a dated trust figure, not a complete measure of your personal cost.
- Set a written role and limit. If you proceed, document why the trust is held, what overlap is acceptable, what loss would trigger a review and how often you will rebalance. Do not treat the limit as a prediction of returns.
- Recheck after material changes. Review when your goals, income, debts, other holdings or the trust’s structure change. Factsheet weights, gearing, discounts and private-company values move over time.
Principal risks that can change the outcome
- Concentration: The top 30 holdings were 81.2% of assets at the factsheet date, so a few large positions can drive results.
- Growth-style volatility: Companies valued for distant growth can fall sharply when interest rates, expectations or financing conditions change.
- Private-company uncertainty: Less frequent valuations and limited liquidity can delay recognition of losses and make exits difficult.
- Gearing: Borrowing magnifies losses and introduces financing costs.
- Foreign exchange: Currency movements can raise or reduce sterling returns independently of company performance.
- Emerging markets: Political, regulatory, liquidity and settlement risks can be greater than in developed markets.
- Discount or premium to NAV: The share price can diverge from the value of the underlying portfolio, affecting your entry and exit returns.
- Capital loss: The trust and its manager warn that share value and income can fall and investors may not recover their capital.
How to use the FCA’s diversification guidance
The Financial Conduct Authority updated its consumer diversification guidance on 16 May 2025. It describes diversification as choosing different kinds of investments across markets that do not rely on the same things to perform well. The guidance gives a general rule of thumb of limiting exposure to high-risk investments to 10% of a portfolio, but it does not classify Scottish Mortgage as a high-risk investment for that rule and does not set an allocation for this trust.
Use the FCA principle to investigate shared risks rather than converting the 10% figure into a Scottish Mortgage target. Your appropriate exposure depends on assets, debts, horizon, liquidity needs, tax position, objectives and ability to withstand losses—information that cannot be inferred from the trust’s factsheet.
When the answer should change
A position that is reasonable for a young investor with secure income, a long horizon and diversified defensive assets may be unsuitable after a job loss, a planned house purchase or a change in retirement withdrawals. Likewise, a trust discount that looks attractive can become less relevant if private-company valuations, gearing or your own liquidity needs change. Re-run the whole-portfolio test whenever your circumstances or the trust’s exposures materially change, rather than relying on the original purchase rationale.
Practical conclusion
Scottish Mortgage belongs in a diversified portfolio only when its specific risks add an intentional growth exposure rather than accidentally duplicating what you already own. The 30 September 2026 figures show why a holding-count test is inadequate: 101 companies were reported, but 81.2% of assets sat in the top 30, 24.9% in private companies, and net gearing was 4%. Compare those characteristics with your existing funds, currencies, sectors, liquidity and borrowing before deciding on a satellite, core, reduced or zero allocation. Treat the 0.3% historical yield, 0.33% ongoing charge and 7.9% discount as dated facts, not guarantees or valuation instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does owning Scottish Mortgage automatically diversify a global index fund?
No. The trust’s largest listed holdings and growth themes can overlap with a global index fund, while its private assets, gearing and discount-to-NAV behavior add different risks. Compare underlying holdings and drivers across both investments.
Is the 7.9% discount to NAV a reason to buy?
Not by itself. A discount can persist or widen, and your return depends on both NAV performance and the share-price discount. Treat the 7.9% figure as the 30 September 2026 snapshot it was, not as proof of value.
Can Scottish Mortgage provide dependable income?
It is primarily aimed at long-term total return and reported a 0.3% historical dividend yield on the dated factsheet. Income is not guaranteed, so investors needing regular payments should assess other reliable sources.
How long should an investor be prepared to hold it?
The trust says it may not suit investors with a horizon of less than five years or those concerned about short-term performance. The relevant horizon is the time before you may need to sell, not a guaranteed recovery period.
