Gold belongs in a portfolio only when it solves a specific problem that your existing holdings do not. It can diversify a stock-and-bond portfolio because its returns and correlations can differ from traditional assets, and it has sometimes held up during severe equity selloffs. It is not a guaranteed crash or inflation hedge, pays no regular income, can be highly volatile, and carries route-specific costs and risks.
The right decision therefore depends on your current allocation, risk tolerance, time horizon, need for cash flow, preferred form of ownership, tax position and total holding costs—not on a universal percentage or a forecast for gold’s next move.

Start with the portfolio problem, not the gold price
Before buying anything, write down what you want gold to do. Common objectives include reducing dependence on equities, adding an asset that may behave differently from stocks and bonds, maintaining a liquid market position during periods of stress, or owning metal directly. Each objective points to different trade-offs.

It has no contractual interest or dividend, and its annual return can swing sharply. The World Gold Council reports that gold’s annual performance was close to +30% in 2010 and close to −30% in 2013. It has also underperformed over some medium-term periods. A holding that is useful for diversification can still be disappointing when judged only by its return against a stock index.

If the objective is protection, define the kind of protection you mean. Diversification means a holding may not fall in lockstep with the rest of the portfolio. A hedge is expected to offset a particular loss, such as an inflation shock or an equity crash. Gold’s historical behavior provides evidence for the first idea and some periods of the second, but it does not guarantee protection in a future event.
What the historical evidence does—and does not—show
Modeled portfolio results
The World Gold Council’s Gold as a strategic asset: 2026 edition compared a hypothetical U.S.-dollar portfolio with and without a 5% gold allocation. For every displayed period ending 31 December 2025, the version containing 5% gold had a higher modeled annualized return, lower annualized volatility and a smaller maximum drawdown. The figures are historical model outputs from the Council, an industry organization; they are not forecasts, guarantees or individualized advice.
| Period ending 31 December 2025 | Annualized return with 5% gold | Annualized return without gold | Modeled volatility and maximum drawdown |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 years | 14.1% | 13.1% | Lower than the no-gold portfolio |
| 5 years | 7.2% | 6.6% | Lower than the no-gold portfolio |
| 10 years | 8.4% | 8.0% | Lower than the no-gold portfolio |
| 20 years | 7.0% | 6.7% | Lower than the no-gold portfolio |
The comparison answers a narrow question: how did this particular 5% allocation behave inside this particular modeled U.S.-dollar portfolio over these historical windows? It does not establish that 5% is right for you. The Council explicitly says the “optimal” amount varies with an individual’s underlying asset allocation and risk. Changing the equity, bond, cash, currency or alternative-asset mix can change the result.

The Council’s analysis of weekly U.S.-dollar returns, the S&P 500, U.S. Treasuries and the LBMA Gold Price PM found that gold’s correlation with equities became more negative during extreme selloffs. It also reports that gold rose 21% in U.S. dollars from December 2007 to February 2009, and that gold remained positive during sharp equity pullbacks in 2022 and 2025.
Those observations are useful when testing the diversification case, but they are period-specific. Correlations change, and an asset that rises during one crisis can fall, stay flat or lag during another. The figures do not prove that gold will rise during the next stock-market decline, nor that it will offset every loss in your portfolio.

Inflation is a separate question
People often use “inflation hedge” to mean an asset whose value reliably keeps pace with consumer prices. The evidence above concerns portfolio behavior and equity selloffs; it does not establish a constant inflation relationship. Gold’s price can be influenced by interest rates, currencies, investor demand and market stress as well as inflation expectations. If inflation protection is your main goal, compare gold with the other inflation-sensitive assets available in your jurisdiction and judge whether the uncertainty is acceptable.
Understand the cost of owning an asset with no income
Gold does not make scheduled interest or dividend payments. The World Gold Council describes the absence of regular income as a widely perceived drawback compared with bonds, property and some company shares. Your return generally depends on a later sale price exceeding your all-in acquisition and ownership costs.

- the purchase premium over the underlying metal price;
- the bid-ask spread when you buy and sell;
- management, platform, brokerage or trading fees;
- vaulting, storage, insurance and audit charges;
- delivery, assay or resale costs for physical metal;
- financing and margin costs for derivatives;
- taxes and the tax value of losses or gains;
- the cost of converting the position to cash when markets are stressed.
A large, liquid global market does not remove these expenses for an individual investor. The World Gold Council estimates average gold-market trading volume of approximately US$361 billion per day in 2025, across over-the-counter, futures and exchange-traded-product activity. It reports approximately US$7 billion per day in average global gold exchange-traded-fund volume. Those are market-wide estimates, not a promise that a particular coin, fund or account will trade at those spreads or volumes.
Choose the exposure route that matches your objective
| Route | What you hold | Key checks | Main risks or trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical bullion or coins | Metal held directly under a specified custody arrangement | Premium, authenticity, storage, insurance, audit, resale market, delivery and jurisdiction-specific tax rules | Custody and security responsibilities; wider trading friction for some products; no income |
| Gold-backed ETF or other exchange-traded product | A security whose legal structure and assets vary by product | Registration status, holdings, fee schedule, custody, tracking, liquidity and historical premiums or discounts to asset value | Market price can differ from underlying value; product structure may not provide direct bullion ownership |
| Futures or other derivatives | A contract linked to gold prices | Margin, leverage, expiry, roll mechanics, tracking, contract size and all product fees | Losses can be magnified; contract returns may diverge from spot bullion |
| Mining shares or mining funds | Equity in companies involved in mining | Company finances, operating assets, jurisdiction, currency, costs and equity valuation | Company and stock-market risks are added; a mining share is not bullion |
Physical bullion and coins
Physical ownership is the most direct route to metal, but “direct” does not mean cost-free or risk-free. Before buying, verify the seller, the product’s purity and authenticity process, the premium over the quoted metal price, shipping and return terms, and the price at which the dealer will repurchase it. Decide whether you will keep it yourself or use a professional vault. Self-storage creates security and insurance questions; third-party custody creates service, access and counterparty questions.

Ask how ownership is recorded, whether individual bars or coins are allocated to you, how audits work, and what happens if the custodian closes or you need delivery. A promise of access is not the same as immediate delivery, so read the custody agreement rather than relying on a product label.
Gold-backed ETFs and other exchange-traded products
Exchange-traded exposure is usually easier to buy and sell in a brokerage account than individual coins, but the legal wrapper matters. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov bulletin explains that registered ETF shares trade at market prices that may be higher or lower than net asset value (NAV). A premium or discount can therefore affect your result even when the underlying gold price is unchanged.
The same SEC bulletin does not cover commodity exchange-traded funds or notes that are not registered under the Investment Company Act. Check the prospectus and current offering documents to determine whether the product is an investment company, a commodity exchange-traded product or another structure. Then review what it actually holds, its expense ratio and other charges, custody arrangements, creation and redemption process, average spreads and trading volume.
Do not assume that two products with “gold” in their names provide the same exposure. Some may be backed by bullion, some may use futures, and some may hold mining companies. Their tax treatment and tracking behavior can differ.
Futures and derivatives
Futures can provide efficient price exposure but require you to understand margin, contract expiry and rolling. A 2026 prospectus filed for a gold strategy exchange-traded fund warns that futures can be leveraged and may not track bullion perfectly. That warning is specific to the disclosed strategy, but the underlying issues—leverage and imperfect tracking—are fundamental questions for any derivative-based approach.

Before using a futures product, determine the maximum loss under a large adverse move, the margin-maintenance rules, the contract’s roll schedule and the effect of contango or backwardation where applicable. A position that appears small relative to your account can create a much larger economic exposure than a fully funded bullion holding.
Mining shares and funds
Mining companies can benefit when gold prices rise, but they are operating businesses. Labor, energy, permitting, environmental obligations, ore quality, management decisions, debt, local currencies and equity-market sentiment can all affect the share price. A mining fund spreads company-specific risk but remains an equity investment. Buy it only if you want that broader business exposure, not as a substitute for bullion.
Use a five-step decision process
- Identify the problem. State whether you seek diversification, potential crisis resilience, liquidity, physical possession or something else. If you cannot name the job, you cannot judge whether gold is earning its place.
- Map your current exposures. List stocks, bonds, cash, property, commodities, foreign currencies and any existing gold or mining holdings. An allocation that looks diversified by account may be concentrated when all accounts are combined.
- Define constraints. Set your investment horizon, acceptable drawdown, need for regular income, emergency-cash requirements and tolerance for complexity. Money needed soon should not be exposed to a volatile asset merely because a long-run chart looks favorable.
- Compare routes on an all-in basis. For each candidate, record fees, premiums, spreads, custody, insurance, tracking, delivery rights, liquidity, leverage and tax treatment. Use the product’s current prospectus, custody agreement or dealer terms, not a generic description.
- Set a review rule before buying. Decide what would make you reduce, replace or sell the position: a change in the portfolio’s purpose, a cost increase, a loss of liquidity, a change in your time horizon or a breach of your risk limit. A prewritten rule reduces the temptation to chase a recent rise.
How much gold should you own?
There is no evidence-based universal percentage. The World Gold Council’s own modeled work says the allocation that optimizes risk-adjusted return changes with the underlying portfolio’s asset mix and risk. Its 5% illustration is a scenario, not a prescription.
Start with the smallest exposure that could plausibly perform the job you identified, then test the effect on the whole portfolio. Ask:
Recommended Free Tools
- How much would a 30% fall in gold change my total account?
- Would the position still be affordable after adding storage, spreads, taxes and account fees?
- Am I reducing a stock or bond position that serves a more important income or liquidity need?
- Does the proposed route create leverage or a custody obligation I do not understand?
- Would I still hold it if gold produced no return for several years?
These questions are more useful than copying a percentage from another investor. Two people with different currencies, tax accounts, liabilities and existing assets can reasonably choose different allocations—or no allocation at all.

When gold is more likely to fit
- You have a diversified core portfolio and want an asset whose historical correlation with equities has sometimes fallen during extreme selloffs.
- You can tolerate periods of substantial volatility and do not require the holding to pay income.
- You have a clearly defined reason for owning metal and can explain why existing assets do not already meet that need.
- You understand the custody, liquidity and tax consequences of the route you selected.
- Your time horizon is long enough that you are not forced to sell after a short-term decline.
When gold may be a poor fit
- You need predictable cash flow from every major holding.
- You are using money needed for near-term expenses or an emergency reserve.
- You are buying after a sharp rally solely because you fear missing out.
- You cannot verify the product’s ownership, fees, pricing or exit terms.
- You are using leverage without a written loss limit and a full understanding of margin requirements.
- Your existing portfolio already has the diversification or crisis characteristics you want and the new holding would mainly add cost and complexity.
Tax and account rules require jurisdiction-specific checking
Tax treatment depends on where you live, the account type and the exact product. In the United States, the Internal Revenue Service discussion cited for this subject concerns collectibles in individually directed qualified-plan accounts. It describes exceptions for certain coins and for bullion meeting specified fineness requirements when physical possession is maintained by a bank or an approved non-bank trustee.
That guidance is not a complete rulebook for ordinary taxable accounts, every retirement account or non-U.S. investors. Before purchasing, check the current tax rules for capital gains, collectibles, distributions, reporting, withholding and losses in your jurisdiction, and ask a qualified tax professional when the account structure is unclear.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing a strong historical period with a forecast
The 21% rise during December 2007–February 2009 and positive results during the 2022 and 2025 equity pullbacks describe what happened, not what must happen next. Build an allocation that can survive an outcome different from the historical examples.
Comparing only headline fees
A low management fee does not necessarily mean a low-cost holding. Include premiums, spreads, custody, insurance, delivery, financing and taxes. For physical metal, the buy-sell gap can matter more than a quoted annual fee. For an exchange-traded product, a persistent premium or discount to NAV can matter more than a small difference in expense ratios.
Calling mining shares “gold”
Mining equities add operating and market risks. Analyze them as stocks, even when their business depends on gold.
Ignoring the legal wrapper
“ETF,” “ETP” and “gold-backed” are not interchangeable descriptions. Read the prospectus, identify the assets and understand how creation, redemption, custody and valuation work.
Putting a large allocation in an income-free asset
Because gold does not pay regular income, an oversized position can leave your portfolio short of the cash flow needed for spending or liabilities. Size it alongside—not instead of—your liquidity and income plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write the role gold is supposed to play in one sentence.
- Calculate the proposed exposure as a percentage of all investable assets, not just one account.
- Stress-test the portfolio for a large gold decline and a simultaneous equity decline.
- Obtain the current prospectus, dealer terms or custody agreement.
- Record every recurring and one-time cost, including the sale cost.
- Confirm how and how quickly you can exit or obtain delivery.
- Verify the tax treatment for your country and account.
- Set a review or rebalancing rule that does not depend on predicting the next crisis.
Gold can be a rational component of a diversified portfolio when its purpose, route and costs are clear. It is not automatically suitable because it is scarce, popular or historically resilient in selected crises. Make the decision from the needs and risks of your entire portfolio, then treat the historical evidence as context—not a promise.
