There is no universally best age to claim Social Security retirement benefits. Claiming as early as 62 gives you income sooner but permanently reduces the monthly worker benefit. Waiting until full retirement age (FRA) produces a larger monthly amount, and delaying beyond FRA increases it until age 70. The sound choice comes from comparing your own estimates with your cash needs, work plans, health and longevity expectations, earnings record, family benefits and Medicare obligations.

The decision in one sentence

Choose the claiming age that best balances the size of your future monthly check against the years of income you give up while waiting. Social Security Administration (SSA) guidance says benefits can begin at 62, delayed-retirement credits stop at 70, and “Choosing when to start receiving your Social Security retirement benefits is an important decision that affects your monthly benefit amount for the rest of your life.”

Stopping work and starting benefits are separate decisions. You can keep working while claiming, stop working and delay, or continue working and delay. Your personal estimate, rather than a published maximum, is the starting point for comparing those options.

How age changes your benefit

Your full retirement age depends on your birth year. For people attaining age 62 in 2026, FRA is 67. Other birth cohorts can have a different FRA, so do not apply one reduction percentage to everyone.

Claiming at 62

Starting before FRA reduces the worker retirement benefit for life. For people whose FRA is 67, SSA says the reduction can be as much as 30% at age 62. The exact reduction depends on birth year and the number of months benefits begin before FRA. A spouse’s or survivor’s benefit can follow different rules.

Claiming at full retirement age

At FRA, you receive the unreduced worker retirement amount calculated from your earnings record. Reaching FRA also ends the retirement earnings test: beginning with the month you reach FRA, wages and net self-employment earnings no longer reduce your Social Security checks.

Delaying after full retirement age

Delayed-retirement credits increase the worker benefit for each month you wait after FRA, up to age 70. There is no additional delayed-retirement credit after 70; SSA states that “There is no incentive to delay filing for your benefits after age 70.” Delaying therefore means accepting fewer checks in the early years in exchange for a larger monthly amount later.

Claiming choice Monthly amount Checks received before age 70 Key issue
Age 62 or another date before FRA Permanently reduced worker benefit; reduction varies by birth year and months early Most Immediate income, but a smaller check and possible earnings-test withholding if you work
FRA Unreduced worker benefit Fewer than an age-62 claim Balances current income with a larger base benefit and no earnings test after FRA
After FRA through age 70 Increased by delayed-retirement credits until 70 Fewer still Requires other resources while waiting but provides the largest worker check at 70

Build a comparison from your own SSA estimates

Illustrations using a maximum earner can be badly misleading. Sign in to your my Social Security account and record the estimates offered for several starting ages. Use the same assumptions for each age so the comparison is meaningful.

  1. Open your earnings record. Check every year for missing or incorrect wages. SSA uses your highest 35 years of earnings; a year with no earnings can count as zero.
  2. Save estimates at multiple ages. Capture the monthly amounts at 62 (if available), one or more ages before FRA, FRA, and 70. If you expect to keep working, review estimates that include those future earnings.
  3. Record the assumptions. Note whether each estimate assumes continued work, a particular stop-work date, or no additional earnings. Changing the assumed earnings can change the benefit.
  4. Map your cash needs. List essential monthly expenses, reliable income, liquid savings and the amount you would need to withdraw while waiting. A larger future benefit is useful only if you can fund the waiting period safely.
  5. Check family eligibility. Identify whether either spouse may qualify for a spousal, divorced-spouse or survivor benefit. Filing rules can change the household comparison.
  6. Put Medicare on a separate timeline. Mark age 65 and verify whether your employer coverage changes when or how you enroll, even if you plan to delay Social Security.
  7. Revisit the decision after major changes. A new job, health event, change in marital status or revised savings balance can make a different claiming age more practical.

SSA’s planning language asks whether you should “start receiving benefits now, or wait until I can receive a higher benefit amount?” Answer that question with your estimates and household facts, not a rule of thumb.

Work, earnings and your 35-year record

Working does not force you to claim

You may work and claim, work and delay, stop working and claim, or stop working and delay. These are independent choices. If you continue earning, later high-earning years can replace lower or zero years in the 35-year calculation and raise your estimate. If you already have 35 higher-earning years, an additional year may not increase the benefit unless it exceeds one of those years.

The 2026 earnings test before FRA

If you are under FRA for the entire year and claim benefits, SSA withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 of wages or net self-employment earnings above $24,480 in 2026. These are 2026 limits and must be refreshed for later years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the calendar year you reach FRA, the rule is different: SSA withholds $1 for every $3 earned above $65,160 in 2026, counting only earnings received before the month you reach FRA. Starting with that month, earnings do not reduce benefits.

Withholding under the earnings test is not necessarily a permanent loss. SSA says it recalculates your benefit at FRA to account for months in which benefits were withheld because earnings were too high. Keep wage records and report changes promptly so the agency can apply the correct rule.

What counts for this test

The limits apply to wages and net self-employment earnings. They do not turn the decision into a simple “work or claim” choice: the possible withholding, the value of additional earnings years and your need for current cash all have to be considered together.

Health, longevity and the cost of waiting

Delaying increases the monthly worker benefit, but you give up payments during the delay. The larger check has value only for as long as you receive it, while claiming early provides cash during the years you wait. Your health, family longevity, access to savings and ability to keep working therefore matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If you need income for basic expenses now, claiming earlier may prevent unsustainable withdrawals or debt, even though the monthly benefit is lower.
  • If you can cover expenses from wages or savings, delaying can buy a larger inflation-adjusted Social Security income stream later.
  • If your health or life expectancy is uncertain, compare the financial consequences under several plausible lifespans rather than relying on a single break-even age.
  • If longevity runs in your family, a higher monthly benefit that lasts for life can become more valuable, particularly for the household member who will eventually receive it.

There is no universal break-even age established by SSA’s published guidance. A generic calculation cannot account for your tax situation, investment withdrawals, spouse’s benefit or survivor needs, so use your own estimates and household cash-flow plan.

Spousal, survivor and household rules

Retirement and spousal claims

For many people who are eligible for both a retirement benefit and a spousal benefit, deemed-filing rules generally link the applications. That means you cannot assume you may freely claim one benefit while allowing the other to grow. Eligibility, age and filing sequence are fact-specific; review the rules that apply to your marriage or former marriage.

Survivor benefits are different

An eligible surviving spouse may claim a survivor benefit independently while allowing their own retirement benefit to continue growing. Survivor benefits are not automatically subject to the same deemed-filing treatment as retirement and spousal benefits. Model the outcome for the surviving spouse, not just the combined benefit while both spouses are alive.

Household questions to answer

  • Who has the higher worker benefit and who is likely to live longer?
  • Would one spouse rely on the other’s record after the first death?
  • Does either person have eligibility based on a previous marriage?
  • Would claiming now trigger deemed filing for another benefit?

Medicare has its own timetable

Delaying Social Security does not mean you can ignore Medicare. If you are not already receiving Social Security, SSA says to apply for Medicare three months before age 65. Employer coverage can affect when Part B enrollment is appropriate, so verify how your active employment and employer plan interact with Medicare before deciding to delay or enroll.

Treat age 65 as a separate deadline in your claiming plan. Confirm who must file, which coverage is considered current employer coverage, and whether your work status will change before you postpone enrollment. The fact that you delay Social Security alone is not a reason to postpone Medicare automatically.

Taxes and other retirement resources

Your decision also interacts with pensions, investment accounts, annuities, wages and taxes. The general SSA rules establish the claiming and earnings-test mechanics, but they do not determine your individual tax result. Before acting, coordinate the Social Security estimates with a cash-flow plan that shows which account supplies spending money each year and how withdrawals could change your taxable income. Do not treat a tax outcome or a personalized recommendation as settled without advice based on your actual records and current law.

What the 2026 maximum-earner examples do—and do not—show

SSA’s 2026 illustrations assume a worker earned the taxable maximum in every year beginning at age 22 and starts benefits in 2026. Under that narrow assumption, the examples are:

Starting age Monthly example Qualification
62 $2,969 Maximum-earner illustration, benefits starting in 2026
FRA $4,152 Maximum-earner illustration, benefits starting in 2026
70 $5,181 Maximum-earner illustration, benefits starting in 2026

These figures are not typical benefits, a promise of what any individual will receive, or a substitute for your account estimate. Your earnings history, birth year and claiming date determine your amount.

Compare the three practical strategies

Decision factor Claim before FRA Claim at FRA Delay toward 70
Monthly benefit Lowest worker amount; permanently reduced Unreduced worker amount Highest worker amount at 70 because credits accrue through 70
Payments before 70 Most months paid Fewer months paid Fewest months paid
Current expenses Provides income sooner Requires less waiting than a delayed claim Requires wages, savings or other income during the delay
Earnings test Can apply before FRA; 2026 thresholds are $24,480 or the FRA-year $65,160 rule Ends when FRA month begins Does not apply once you have reached FRA
Effect of continued work New high-earning years may improve the record, but withholding can occur New high-earning years may improve the record New high-earning years may improve the record while the benefit grows for delay
Spouse and survivor consequences May reduce a worker benefit used in household planning; filing rules are fact-specific Provides the unreduced worker amount for household modeling Can create a larger worker amount or survivor base, but requires a household plan
Medicare Still evaluate Medicare at 65 Still evaluate Medicare at 65 Still evaluate Medicare at 65; delaying Social Security does not automatically delay Medicare

How the choice looks in common situations

You need the benefit to meet essential bills

Start by testing whether wages, cash reserves or other reliable income can cover necessities until FRA or 70. If they cannot, claiming may be the safer cash-flow choice. Do not force a delay that requires high-interest debt or drains reserves needed for medical and housing costs.

You are still earning a substantial wage

Compare the value of the paycheck and any additional high-earning years with the possibility of earnings-test withholding before FRA. If you claim while working, estimate the amount that could be withheld under the 2026 rule and remember that SSA later recalculates for withheld months.

You can comfortably self-fund the delay

Use your account estimates to see how much the worker benefit rises at FRA and 70. Then test whether your assets can support the waiting period without undermining emergency reserves or other goals. A higher later check may be attractive, but it is not automatically optimal for every health or family situation.

You are coordinating two spouses

Build a household timeline rather than choosing each claim in isolation. Check deemed-filing rules, each person’s worker estimate and the survivor outcome. A strategy that looks efficient while both spouses are alive may leave the survivor with less income than expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are approaching 65 with employer coverage

Resolve Medicare enrollment before finalizing a Social Security date. Confirm whether your employer plan permits a Part B delay and what happens if employment or coverage ends. Social Security timing cannot answer that Medicare question by itself.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using age 62, FRA or 70 as a universal rule. Replace the rule with your own estimates, spending needs and household analysis.
  • Assuming every FRA is 67. Verify your birth-year FRA; the 67 figure applies to people attaining age 62 in 2026.
  • Confusing stopping work with filing. Evaluate the work decision and claiming decision separately.
  • Applying the 2026 earnings limits forever. Treat $24,480 and $65,160 as 2026 amounts and check the current-year limits before filing.
  • Thinking earnings-test withholding is permanently forfeited. SSA recalculates at FRA for months benefits were withheld because earnings were too high.
  • Ignoring additional earnings years. Review whether new wages can replace zero or lower years in your highest-35 calculation.
  • Assuming you can claim a spousal benefit while delaying your own without restriction. Deemed-filing rules often link retirement and spousal applications.
  • Treating survivor benefits like spousal benefits. Survivor claims can be filed independently and follow different rules.
  • Delaying Medicare because Social Security is delayed. Apply for Medicare around 65 when required and verify employer-coverage rules, especially for Part B.
  • Using maximum-earner examples as a forecast. The 2026 figures are illustrations for a worker at the taxable maximum from age 22.
  • Relying on a generic break-even age. Compare your own estimates and resources; no single published age fits every household.

A final claiming checklist

  1. Verify your FRA and save your current SSA estimates.
  2. Check your earnings record for missing years and understand whether future work could replace lower years.
  3. Write down the monthly income required before FRA and at 70.
  4. Compare claiming before FRA, at FRA and at 70 using the same assumptions.
  5. If working before FRA, apply the correct 2026 earnings-test limit and withholding formula.
  6. Review spousal, divorced-spouse and survivor eligibility for both partners.
  7. Set a Medicare deadline three months before 65 if you are not already receiving benefits, and verify employer coverage before deciding about Part B.
  8. Account for pensions, savings and taxes using current, individualized information.
  9. Recheck the plan if health, work, marriage or finances change before you file.
