To create a wallet for AI-agent payments, open the Base app, select its smart wallet, copy the wallet address, and fund it with USDC on the Base network. You can buy USDC through Coinbase Onramp, transfer it from a Coinbase account, or send it from another wallet. Choose Base as the network every time and keep a small ETH balance available because ERC-20 transfers can require ETH for gas.
For an autonomous agent, a personal smart wallet is only the starting point. Production use normally adds Coinbase Agentic Wallets, AgentKit, or Base MCP, plus per-transaction and per-session limits, a dedicated low-balance wallet, destination checks, and a response plan for suspicious activity. This setup lets an agent pay for APIs, data, inference, search, compute, and other services that accept USDC through Base protocols such as x402.

What are you creating: a Base wallet, a Coinbase wallet, or an agent wallet?
Base and Coinbase wallet interfaces can give you access to the same underlying concept: a blockchain address that can hold assets on the Base network. The Base app’s wallet switcher lets you select a smart wallet and copy its address. Coinbase documentation may refer to this as Coinbase Wallet, while the current consumer interface may appear in the Base app; follow the labels shown in your installed app and confirm that the selected network is Base.
A smart wallet is controlled through wallet software rather than a traditional bank account. Its address is public and can receive funds, but control over spending depends on the wallet’s authentication and signing setup. An agent should not automatically receive unrestricted control of a personal wallet. Create a separate wallet for the agent, fund only the amount needed for its assigned work, and keep savings or long-term holdings elsewhere.

USDC is the usual payment asset for this workflow. Coinbase describes USDC as a dollar-pegged stablecoin redeemable 1:1 and backed by dollar-denominated assets held in segregated accounts. A USDC balance is still a crypto asset on a blockchain, not a bank deposit, and its usability depends on the network and the service accepting it.
How do I create or access the smart wallet?
The wallet itself can be accessed in a few minutes, but the important step is verifying the address and network before anyone sends money.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open the Base app. Use the official app you normally use for your Base account and open the wallet area.
- Open the wallet switcher. Select the smart wallet rather than an unrelated account or network view.
- Copy the address with the copy icon. Do not retype it. A single incorrect character can send funds to an unrecoverable destination.
- Record the network beside the address. Label it clearly as Base. An address format that looks familiar does not make an Ethereum, Base, or other network transfer interchangeable.
- Check the receiving asset. Decide whether the wallet should receive USDC, ETH, or another supported asset before initiating a transfer.
- Use a small test transfer when the sender or amount is unfamiliar. Confirm that the test arrives before sending the remaining balance.
Coinbase’s smart-wallet instructions say the wallet can be funded either by sending crypto directly to its address or by buying through Coinbase Onramp. The address is not a payment invoice with built-in currency conversion: the sender must choose the correct asset and Base network in the sending interface.
How can I fund the wallet with USDC on Base?
There are three practical funding routes. Buying inside the wallet is simplest for a new user, a Coinbase-to-wallet transfer is convenient when your funds already sit on Coinbase, and an external-wallet transfer works when your crypto is held elsewhere.
| Route | Best use | Core path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy USDC on Base | You need to acquire USDC and do not already hold it on Base | Base or Coinbase Wallet → Buy → USDC on Base network → amount → payment method → confirm | Payment methods vary by country; network fees may still apply. |
| Transfer from Coinbase | Your USDC or other crypto is already in a Coinbase account | Coinbase app → Transfer → Send crypto → asset → Base network → wallet address → preview → send | The transfer is on-chain and is not necessarily instant. |
| Send from another wallet | Funds are held with another exchange or self-custody wallet | Copy the smart-wallet address, paste it into the sender’s To field, choose Base, and confirm | The sender must support the Base network for that asset. |
Route A: buy USDC directly on Base
- Open the wallet and choose Buy.
- Select USDC on Base network, not an identically named USDC asset on another network.
- Enter the amount and select an available payment method.
- Review the quoted amount, network, and any displayed fee.
- Confirm the purchase and wait for the wallet balance to update.
Coinbase states that payment methods differ by country. A displayed purchase amount therefore should not be treated as a universal price or fee schedule. Network charges can still apply even when the purchase is initiated inside the wallet.
Route B: transfer from a Coinbase account
- Open the Coinbase app and choose Transfer, then Send crypto.
- Select the asset you want to send. For agent payments, this is commonly USDC.
- When the network list appears, choose Base.
- Select the wallet address you copied from the Base smart wallet.
- Preview the transaction and check the asset, network, destination, amount, and any fee shown.
- Send the transfer and wait for on-chain confirmation.
Do not assume that an internal-looking Coinbase transfer is instant. Coinbase’s instructions describe this flow as an on-chain transfer, so confirmation time can vary with network conditions and service processing.

Route C: send from another wallet
- In the Base app, switch to the smart wallet and copy its address.
- In the sending wallet, open its send screen and paste the address into the To field.
- Select the asset and explicitly select Base as the network.
- Review the destination and amount. If the sender offers a network-specific balance, make sure it is the Base balance.
- Submit a small test transaction if this is the first transfer between the two wallets.
- After the test arrives, send the amount required for the agent’s approved budget.
Coinbase warns users to identify and select the correct network. Sending an asset on the wrong network can make recovery difficult or impossible, even when the text of the address appears correct.
Why does an agent wallet need ETH if the agent pays in USDC?
USDC is the payment asset, but Base transactions that move an ERC-20 token can require ETH to pay the network fee. Keep a small ETH balance in the wallet that will initiate transfers or approve token movements.
| Asset | Role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USDC on Base | Budget for API, data, inference, search, compute, or other service payments | Confirm the token is on Base and that the service accepts USDC on Base. |
| ETH on Base | Network gas for eligible transfers and contract interactions | Maintain a reserve; an agent can have enough USDC and still fail when ETH gas is exhausted. |
| Other assets | Optional funding or conversion source | Verify that the wallet and the intended protocol support the asset and network. |
The required ETH amount is not stated as a fixed universal number because fees depend on the transaction and network conditions. Treat the ETH reserve as an operating balance, monitor it separately from the USDC budget, and replenish it only through an approved process.
Which infrastructure should run an AI agent’s payments?
A person making occasional payments can use a smart wallet manually. A software agent that signs or initiates transactions needs a controlled integration layer. The practical choices described by Coinbase and Base differ mainly in how much wallet management and policy enforcement they provide.
| Option | Best for | Funding path | Main control or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base app or Coinbase Wallet smart wallet | A person who wants a simple wallet and onramp | Buy USDC on Base or receive a transfer | Simple interface, but network, destination, and fee checks remain necessary. |
| Coinbase Agentic Wallets | Production agents needing managed wallet operations | Fund through an approved Coinbase or Base flow, then use the agent skills | Coinbase advertises spend caps, enclave isolation for private keys, and KYT screening; access and terms must be verified for your account. |
| AgentKit | Developers who want framework- and wallet-agnostic tooling | Developer-controlled wallet setup and funding | Flexible and supports fee-free stablecoin payments in its described capabilities, but the developer remains responsible for prompt-injection and transfer safety. |
| Base MCP | Prompt-driven interaction with Base protocols | Connect a Base Account and fund the associated wallet | Convenient tool workflows require explicit transaction review and policy boundaries. |
Coinbase Agentic Wallets
Coinbase describes Agentic Wallets as wallet infrastructure that lets agents spend, earn, and trade. Its listed use cases include autonomous DeFi, machine-economy payments for API keys, compute and data, and agentic commerce. The product page advertises per-session and per-transaction spend caps, enclave isolation for private keys, and know-your-transaction screening.
Those features are controls offered by the product, not a guarantee that every transaction is safe. Confirm which limits, screening rules, recovery methods, and jurisdictions apply to the version available to you before moving production funds.

AgentKit
AgentKit is described in its repository as framework-agnostic and wallet-agnostic, with support for stablecoin payments and on-chain interactions. That flexibility is useful when your agent already runs in a particular framework or when you need to connect more than one wallet implementation.
The same flexibility means the application developer must define authentication, allowed actions, destination policies, key handling, logging, and emergency shutdown behavior. AgentKit warns that direct or indirect prompt injection can influence transfers when a funded wallet and a fund-moving action provider are available.

Base MCP
Base MCP connects an AI tool to a Base Account for wallet operations and protocol interactions. It can make a prompt-driven workflow feel natural, but natural-language convenience should not bypass a transaction preview or a spending policy. Require the agent to present the asset, network, destination, amount, and purpose before a signing step.
How do AI agents pay for APIs and services on Base?
Base describes x402 as an HTTP payment protocol with native payment semantics: a service can require payment and an agent can pay as part of a request. In practical terms, an agent discovers a payable endpoint, receives the amount and payment instructions, creates the authorized USDC payment, and retries or completes the request after the service verifies payment.
Base presents agents paying USDC for x402-enabled inference, data, search, and other services. Its agentic.market is described as a discovery venue for services, while Base MCP supplies a way to connect tools to Base wallet and protocol operations.
- Discovery: the agent identifies a service and reads its payment requirements.
- Policy check: the agent compares the requested amount, recipient, asset, network, and service category with its allowed policy.
- Authorization: the wallet infrastructure applies session and transaction limits and requests the required signature or approval.
- Payment: the transaction is submitted on Base using USDC and any required gas.
- Verification: the service checks the payment and returns the requested API result or access token.
- Logging: the agent records the request, transaction identifier, amount, recipient, and response status.
Coinbase’s Agentic Wallets page says the x402 standard has been battle-tested with more than 50 million transactions. Coinbase presents that as an undated vendor claim; it is not a dated, independently verified statistic in the available material.

How should I limit an agent’s spending safely?
Start with a dedicated wallet and a deliberately small balance. Then make the agent prove that each payment fits a policy before any signing capability is enabled.
- Separate funds: keep operating funds in the agent wallet and store personal or treasury assets elsewhere.
- Set transaction caps: define the maximum USDC amount for one payment. Use the smallest amount that can complete the task.
- Set session caps: limit total spending during one run, conversation, or time window.
- Restrict recipients: use an allowlist for known API providers where your infrastructure supports it.
- Restrict categories: distinguish approved inference, data, search, or compute services from arbitrary contract calls.
- Require human approval for exceptions: pause when the amount, destination, contract, or network differs from policy.
- Keep ETH separate in monitoring: alert on low gas balance before a payment fails.
- Log every action: retain the prompt or job identifier, policy decision, transaction hash, amount, and result.
- Use least privilege: expose only the wallet actions the agent actually needs; do not enable trading or unrestricted transfers for an API-payment agent.
Coinbase advertises per-session and per-transaction caps for Agentic Wallets. If you use another stack, implement equivalent controls in the wallet adapter, policy engine, or approval service rather than assuming the model will enforce them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I defend against prompt injection and bad payment instructions?
Treat text returned by websites, documents, APIs, and other agents as untrusted input. A malicious page can instruct an agent to send funds, change a recipient, or disable safeguards unless the payment policy is enforced outside the model’s free-form reasoning.
- Keep payment instructions separate from content. Parse recipient, amount, asset, network, and expiry into structured fields.
- Validate against policy. Reject missing fields, unsupported networks, unknown recipients, excessive amounts, and unusual contract calls.
- Show a final transaction preview. The preview should include the exact destination and amount, not only a natural-language summary.
- Require an independent approval for policy changes. A webpage or model response must not be able to raise its own spending limit.
- Expire sessions. Re-authenticate after inactivity, a large balance change, or a change in task scope.
- Stop on anomalies. Pause after repeated failures, a sudden recipient change, unexpected token approval, or a request to reveal keys.
AgentKit specifically warns that direct and indirect prompt injection can affect transfers when a funded wallet and a fund-moving action provider are available. No wallet framework removes the need to isolate secrets, constrain actions, and review high-risk transactions.
What should I verify before the first live payment?
Run a controlled test with a small amount and a service you understand. Use this checklist before allowing an agent to operate unattended.
- The wallet address was copied from the intended smart-wallet view.
- The sending and receiving networks both show Base.
- The token is USDC on Base, not USDC on another chain.
- The wallet has enough ETH for the expected transaction type.
- The agent has only the permissions needed for the test.
- The per-transaction and per-session limits are lower than the wallet balance.
- The service recipient and contract address match your allowlist or approval rule.
- A transaction preview displays the expected amount and destination.
- The transaction identifier and service response are written to your logs.
- You know how to disable the agent and move remaining funds if the test fails.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| USDC balance is present but a transfer fails | Insufficient ETH for Base gas | Send a small amount of ETH on Base through an approved route, then retry after confirming the balance. |
| The recipient cannot find the payment | Wrong network, wrong token version, or pending on-chain confirmation | Check the transaction record, network, token contract, and confirmation status before sending again. |
| A buy option is unavailable | Payment-method or regional availability differs | Use an available method or fund the wallet from a supported Coinbase or external-wallet route. |
| The agent exceeds its normal spend pattern | Prompt injection, policy failure, compromised integration, or incorrect service pricing | Disable signing, preserve logs, review recent prompts and destinations, and move remaining funds to a clean wallet if compromise is suspected. |
| A transfer was sent on the wrong network | Network was not selected or reviewed correctly | Contact the sending platform’s support process and the receiving wallet provider; recovery depends on custody and destination control and is not guaranteed. |
| The wallet address looks right but funds are missing | Address copied from a different account or network view | Compare the exact address, account, network, and transaction hash. Do not send additional funds until the discrepancy is resolved. |
How should I keep records and handle taxes?
Maintain a ledger for every purchase, transfer, gas payment, agent payment, refund, and conversion. Record the date and time, asset, network, quantity, fiat value used by your accounting method, transaction identifier, recipient, service purpose, and wallet involved.

Coinbase notes that reporting rules differ by country. An agent paying for a business API can create expenses, while acquiring, disposing of, swapping, or receiving crypto can have separate tax consequences. Ask a tax professional in your jurisdiction how to classify USDC purchases, gas, service payments, and any rewards or revenue; do not assume that a dollar-pegged token is tax-neutral.
What is the safest operating model for a small team?
Use a three-layer arrangement: a human-controlled funding wallet, a low-balance agent wallet, and a policy service between the agent and the signer. The human wallet replenishes the agent wallet only when an approved budget requires it. The policy service validates every payment and can stop the agent without exposing the human wallet’s credentials.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a solo developer, the same model can be implemented with separate wallet accounts, environment-specific keys, hard-coded limits, and manual approval for transfers above a threshold. Test on a small balance first, rotate credentials when personnel or infrastructure changes, and document who can pause the agent and recover funds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fund an AI-agent wallet without using a Coinbase account?
Yes. Copy the smart-wallet address from the Base app and send USDC or ETH from another wallet that supports the Base network. The sender still has to choose Base explicitly and should perform a small test transfer before the full amount.
What happens if the agent runs out of ETH but still has USDC?
Token payments or approvals that require gas can fail even when the USDC balance is sufficient. Pause the agent, verify the wallet address, and replenish a small ETH amount on Base through an approved funding route before retrying.
Can I revoke an agent’s spending access after I fund it?
The exact method depends on the wallet infrastructure. Disable the agent or signing service first, remove its credentials or permissions, and move remaining funds to a clean wallet if you suspect compromise; never rely on a model instruction to stop itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Are Base and Ethereum addresses interchangeable?
They may share a similar address format, but the network is part of the transaction. A sender can put funds on Ethereum or another chain while displaying the same-looking address, so always confirm Base in both the sending and receiving interfaces.
How long should I wait before assuming a payment failed?
Check the on-chain transaction status and the service’s payment record rather than immediately sending a duplicate. Confirmation and API settlement times vary, and a second payment can create an unintended double charge.
