How to Create and Back Up a Secure Crypto Wallet Seed Phrase

Create your recovery phrase inside a reputable wallet—preferably a hardware wallet initialized by you—and let the device generate it from its own trusted random source. Write every word in the displayed order, complete the device’s backup check, and keep the record offline, private, and physically protected. Make separate copies in separate secure locations so one fire, flood, theft, or misplaced item cannot remove your only recovery path.

A seed phrase is an ordered mnemonic from which a deterministic wallet derives its seed and private keys. Anyone who obtains the phrase can generally control the assets it restores, so treat it like an unrestricted signing secret. Never invent a sentence, use a website generator, photograph the words, or send them to support.

What a crypto seed phrase does

A seed phrase, also called a wallet backup or recovery phrase, is an ordered list of words that encodes the information needed to recreate a wallet. The wallet converts the mnemonic into a binary seed and derives the account keys and addresses from that seed. With a deterministic wallet, one correctly recorded backup can restore addresses generated in the past and, subject to the wallet’s implementation and derivation paths, addresses generated later.

Possession is the critical security boundary. A person who reads your phrase may be able to restore the wallet on another device and sign transactions without your hardware wallet, password, or permission. Conversely, a lost or broken hardware device is usually replaceable if the phrase is intact and you know the wallet’s standard, assets, derivation settings, and any additional passphrase.

Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39 (BIP39), published by its authors in 2013, defines mnemonics generated from 128 to 256 bits of entropy and a checksum, then derives a wallet seed with PBKDF2. BIP39 explicitly is not a method for processing a sentence that a person invents; a memorable “brainwallet” is not a safe substitute for device-generated entropy.

Choose the wallet standard before creating anything

Do not begin by copying words into a new app. First determine which backup format the wallet uses and whether it supports the assets and account paths you need. A phrase can look valid yet restore a different wallet if the recovery standard or derivation path is incompatible.

BIP39 mnemonics

BIP39 is the common 12- or 24-word format. The words come from entropy plus a checksum, not from a user-selected sentence. A BIP39-compatible wallet must also use compatible word language, account type, and derivation path to show the expected addresses after recovery.

SLIP39 shares

SLIP39 is a different backup system documented by Trezor for supported devices. It can use a 20-word single-share backup or a multi-share arrangement in which a required number of shares reconstructs the wallet. SLIP39 shares and BIP39 phrases are not universally interchangeable. Confirm compatibility before moving funds or assuming that a BIP39 restore screen can accept SLIP39 shares.

Asset and derivation support

Write down the wallet brand and model, the standard used, the assets held, and any derivation-path or account-type information that a future recovery may require. Keep this operational information separate from the secret words. It helps an heir or your future self identify the correct restore procedure without turning the phrase into a digital document.

How to create a seed phrase safely

  1. Acquire the device through a trusted channel. If you choose hardware, inspect the packaging and complete the manufacturer’s authenticity checks. Do not accept a device that arrives initialized, has a preprinted phrase, or instructs you to use words supplied by a seller or message.
  2. Prepare a private environment. Initialize the wallet yourself, away from cameras, visitors, smart speakers, and active screen-sharing sessions. The phrase should appear only on the trusted device or its supplied backup materials.
  3. Let the wallet generate the words. Use the device’s own random generator rather than a website, chat bot, spreadsheet, dice shortcut, or sentence you compose. Trezor says its words are generated from hardware entropy rather than a pattern a person could predict or recreate.
  4. Record each word exactly. Use the supplied card or another durable offline medium. Preserve spelling, order, and numbering as you write. Do not add labels, account names, or explanatory text in a way that could be mistaken for a seed word.
  5. Check the entire sequence on the device. Read the words back slowly. A single transposition, misspelling, or omitted word creates a different wallet.
  6. Complete the built-in backup test. Most hardware wallets require you to select or enter words as a confirmation. Treat the backup as unverified until the device accepts this check; a card that has never been tested may contain a transcription error.
  7. Keep the phrase off connected devices. Do not type it into a phone, computer, website, cloud note, email, password manager, or support form. A connected copy can be captured by malware, browser history, synchronization, screenshots, or account compromise.
  8. Make protected offline copies. Create a second, exact copy and place it in a separate secure location. Separation protects against a single event destroying both copies, but every copy increases the number of places that must be secured.

How to write and verify the backup

Paper is acceptable for a temporary or lower-value setup if it is stored in a genuinely dry, private location. Write with a permanent pen, keep the words legible, and avoid folding or marking the card where a digit or word can be hidden. Numbering the lines helps detect a swapped pair during a later check.

For long-term self-custody, a metal backup plate can resist fire, water, and physical deterioration better than paper. It does not solve the confidentiality problem: anyone who finds and reads the plate can use the phrase. Store it where unauthorized people cannot inspect it, and do not advertise that a seed backup is present.

After recording, use the wallet’s recovery-check function. If the device reports an error, stop and compare the card with the displayed words in order. Do not “correct” a word by guessing from memory or by searching a list online. If the phrase cannot be verified, assume the backup is unreliable until the wallet is reinitialized or the words are confirmed through the device’s documented process.

Where to store a seed phrase

Method Strength Main weakness Best use
Paper card Cheap, simple, and offline Can burn, tear, fade, or be photographed Small balances or a temporary setup while arranging durable storage
Metal backup plate Greater resistance to fire, water, and wear Costs more and still reveals the words to anyone who finds it Long-term self-custody
Hardware-wallet backup Generated and used on a dedicated device rather than a general-purpose computer Device loss, phishing, and supply-chain risks still require attention Regular signing and larger balances
Multisignature or shares Reduces dependence on one key or one location More setup and a more complicated recovery procedure Higher-value or shared custody

Use more than one secure location when the value or consequences justify it. A home safe plus another protected location can prevent one burglary, flood, or fire from removing every copy. Do not put all copies in the same bag, drawer, or cloud account and call that redundancy.

Is a 12-word or 24-word phrase better?

Both are legitimate BIP39 lengths. A 12-word phrase represents 128 bits of initial entropy plus its checksum; a 24-word phrase represents 256 bits of initial entropy plus its checksum. The longer phrase provides a larger theoretical search space, while the shorter phrase is easier to write and verify accurately. For most users, the decisive risks are exposure, loss, and transcription mistakes—not an attacker guessing a correctly generated phrase by brute force.

Choose the length your wallet generates and that you can store and verify reliably. Do not shorten a 24-word phrase, append your own words, or combine words from two wallets. Ledger’s developer documentation states that its devices use a 24-word BIP39 English mnemonic by default; other wallets may generate 12 words or offer a different standard. The device’s documented format, not a generic internet recommendation, controls the correct restore procedure.

Optional passphrases: useful but unforgiving

BIP39 supports an optional passphrase in addition to the mnemonic. The passphrase changes the derived wallet: the same words with a different passphrase produce a different set of keys and addresses. It is therefore not a harmless password layered on top of the original wallet.

If you use one, record that a passphrase exists and preserve the exact capitalization, spaces, and punctuation in a separate, secure record. Never store it in the same obvious location as the phrase. Forgetting the passphrase can make correct words restore an apparently empty wallet, and there is no customer-support override that can reconstruct a forgotten value.

A passphrase increases the consequences of poor documentation. Use it only when you understand how the wallet handles it, can retrieve it during an emergency, and have a plan for authorized heirs. Test a complete restore—including the passphrase and address verification—before depositing significant funds.

What to do if the hardware wallet is lost

A missing device does not by itself destroy a deterministic wallet. Obtain a compatible replacement from a trusted channel, choose the restore or recover option during setup, select the same standard, and enter the words only on the trusted device. If the original wallet used a passphrase, enter that exact passphrase as well.

After restoration, verify that the expected accounts and receiving addresses appear before signing anything. If the balances appear absent, check the standard, account type, network, derivation path, and passphrase. A different path can produce a valid but empty-looking account even when every word was entered correctly. Do not send the phrase to a support agent to troubleshoot the discrepancy.

If you believe the phrase may have been seen, treat the wallet as compromised rather than merely replacing the hardware. Create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase on a trusted device and move assets to addresses controlled by the new wallet. The old phrase cannot be made secret again.

Threats that defeat otherwise good backups

Phishing and fake support

Unexpected requests for your phrase are a theft attempt. Trezor states that it will never ask for a wallet backup, including during a support conversation. A legitimate support representative, buyer, friend, or recovery service does not need the words to diagnose a device. Navigate to official support through a source you already trust rather than clicking a message link.

Digital copies

Do not photograph, screenshot, scan, email, message, or upload the phrase. Trezor specifically warns against digital copies such as screenshots, photographs, emails, and Dropbox files. A password manager or encrypted drive can be part of an expert-level threat model, but an ordinary cloud-synchronized copy creates another account and device that must remain uncompromised. Offline storage is the safer default.

Malware and an exposed computer

Connected computers and malware can steal wallet data or alter transactions. Keep the wallet firmware, wallet application, and operating system updated from their official channels. Review the destination address and amount on the hardware-wallet screen before approving a transaction; the computer display is not the final authority.

Supply-chain tampering

A hardware wallet should arrive uninitialized and pass its authenticity checks. Never use a phrase printed on a card in the box, and never follow a setup instruction that asks you to send words back to a seller. Generate the phrase during your own initialization.

Physical discovery

Fire- and water-resistant material protects availability, not secrecy. A metal plate in an unlocked desk is still a full wallet for anyone who finds it. Limit who knows that a backup exists, control access to the storage location, and consider whether an intruder could read the words without removing the container.

Multisignature and share-based backups

For a high-value treasury or shared household custody, multisignature wallets or threshold shares can reduce dependence on one phrase or one location. They also introduce more failure points: every participant needs clear instructions, compatible software, and a way to identify which shares or keys are required for recovery.

Document the wallet type, quorum or signing requirement, participating devices, supported assets, and derivation information separately from the secret material. Conduct a supervised recovery test before the funds become difficult to move. A complex design that nobody can recover is less safe than a simpler design that is documented and tested.

Prepare recovery instructions without exposing the secret

Create a short, non-secret inventory for your future self or heirs. It can identify the wallet manufacturer and model, whether the backup is BIP39 or SLIP39, the assets and networks used, the existence of a passphrase, and where the physical backup is held. It can also explain which restore screen to choose and how to verify a receiving address.

Keep the inventory separate from the words. Never put the phrase in a cloud document or send it by email. If another person must be able to recover the assets, decide in advance how that person will receive access to the physical backup and any separate passphrase without creating an easily copied digital record.

Annual backup check

  • Inspect paper or metal for fading, corrosion, water damage, or missing characters.
  • Confirm that every word is legible and in the correct numbered order.
  • Check that the wallet’s standard and supported assets have not changed after an upgrade.
  • Review where each copy is stored and who can access it.
  • Verify that your heirs or designated recovery person know the non-secret procedure.
  • Test recovery only in a controlled environment; never type the phrase into a website or an internet-connected form.

Bitcoin.org describes a wallet backup stored in a safe place as protection against computer failures and many human mistakes, and calls hardware wallets the best balance between very high security and ease of use. The practical rule is straightforward: generate the phrase on a trusted wallet, verify it on that wallet, keep it offline and private, and maintain enough physically separated copies to survive the hazards you actually face.
