Do not file a second original form. For a wrong form type, use a two-step process: zero out the erroneous record, then file the correct form as an original return. Furnish the recipient a corrected statement and keep the new submission identifiers.
Which IRIS correction method applies?
The correction method depends on what is wrong, not on whether the error seems minor. IRIS distinguishes an ordinary data correction from a replacement of the form type itself.

| Error | IRIS method | What to submit |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong payee name or taxpayer identification number (TIN) | One-step correction | Correct the record and submit it through Correct/Replace. If the return should never have been issued to that recipient, enter zero for every amount. |
| Incorrect payment amount | One-step correction | Correct the amount on the existing form and transmit the correction. |
| Wrong code, checkbox or indicator | One-step correction | Correct the affected field and transmit the correction. |
| Form filed for someone who should not have received one | One-step correction | Use the correction record with zero in all amount fields. |
| Wrong form type, such as Form 1099-MISC instead of Form 1099-NEC | Two-step correction/replacement | First submit a correction that zeros the money amounts on the wrong record. Then submit the right form as an original return with the correct data. |
Publication 5717 (Rev. 9-2026) states: “You must submit corrections through the portal for information returns submitted through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal.” That channel rule is the starting point for every portal-filed correction.

Have the original filing details ready before you begin. This prevents a second mistake and makes it easier to prove what changed.

- Your IRIS Taxpayer Portal login and five-digit Transmitter Control Code (TCC). The IRS says IRIS is free for businesses of any size, but a TCC is required for the Taxpayer Portal.
- The transmission that contains the erroneous 1099.
- The recipient’s current legal name and TIN, when the error involves identity information.
- The corrected payment amounts, codes, indicators and other fields.
- The original form type and tax year.
- A copy of the original statement and any notice, recipient message or internal review that identified the error.
- A plan for furnishing the recipient a corrected statement after the IRS submission.
Do not start by creating a new original return. The correction must be linked to the submitted record inside IRIS; a duplicate original can create duplicate reporting.
How to correct a 1099 in the IRIS Taxpayer Portal
Use this workflow for a form submitted through the portal, whether you are correcting one form or selecting several forms from the same transmission.
- Locate the original transmission. Sign in to IRIS and find the transmission containing the erroneous form. Confirm the tax year, recipient and form type before selecting anything.
- Select the form or forms. Choose the affected record or records and click Correct/Replace. This tells IRIS that the new submission is tied to an already filed return.
- Open the correction draft. IRIS starts the correction process and places the selected forms on the Unsubmitted Forms page. The record is not corrected merely by selecting the button; it remains a draft until you finish and submit it.
- Edit the fields. Enter the corrected name, TIN, amount, code, indicator or other data. For a form that should not have been filed for that recipient, set every amount to zero. For a wrong-form replacement, follow the two-step procedure described below rather than changing the form type inside a single correction.
- Review the complete record. Check the recipient identity, address, TIN, tax year, form type, amounts, codes and indicators. A correction that fixes one field but carries forward another error can require another filing.
- Submit the correction as a new transmission. Follow IRIS’s submission prompts and wait for the submission to be accepted or otherwise processed. A saved draft or an on-screen review is not a filed correction.
- Save the evidence. Record the new transmission identifier, submission date, status and any confirmation information. Keep it with the original filing and your corrected statement.
- Furnish the recipient. Send a corrected statement to the recipient using your normal delivery method and retain proof of when and how it was furnished.
Make the correction as soon as you discover the error. The IRS’s statement that an electronically filed 1099 can receive confirmation in as little as 48 hours is a published processing-time statement, not a guarantee that a correction will be completed within 48 hours.

Incorrect payment amounts
If the form type is correct but a dollar amount is wrong, use Correct/Replace, change the affected amount and submit the corrected record. Review related amount fields at the same time: changing one payment category may expose a mismatch with totals or another box.
Incorrect codes, indicators or checkboxes
A wrong code or indicator is generally handled in one correction. Select the original form, update the field, review the whole record and submit it as a correction. Do not send a second original simply because the first record contained a coding mistake.
Wrong payee name or TIN
Use the one-step IRIS correction path to update the recipient’s name or TIN. Verify the legal name and TIN against the information you maintain before submitting. The corrected statement furnished to the recipient should show the corrected identity information.

Identity errors are different from selecting a different form type. If the form itself is the right type and only the payee data is wrong, you do not use the wrong-form two-step process.
A return filed for the wrong recipient
If a 1099 was issued to a person or business that should not have received one, select the original record through Correct/Replace and enter zero for all amounts in the correction. Complete the rest of the record as required by IRIS, submit it, and notify the recipient that the return was corrected. Retain the reason for the correction in your records.
Two-step corrections when the form type is wrong
A form-type error requires two related filings. The classic example is filing Form 1099-MISC when the payment should have been reported on Form 1099-NEC.
Step 1: zero the erroneous record
In IRIS, select the filed wrong-form record and start Correct/Replace. Submit a correction that zeros the money amounts on that erroneous record. This removes the reportable amounts from the wrong form rather than merely changing a field on it.
Step 2: file the correct form as original
Create and submit the correct form as an original return, using the accurate recipient information and amounts. It is a new original of the right form type, not another correction to the wrong form.
| Stage | Form type | Amounts | Transmission status |
|---|---|---|---|
| First filing | Wrong form, for example 1099-MISC | Original reported amounts | Already filed |
| Correction | The same wrong form | Amounts changed to zero | Correction through Correct/Replace |
| Replacement filing | Correct form, for example 1099-NEC | Correct reportable amounts | Original return |
Do not try to solve a wrong-form error by filing the correct form alone. Without the zero-dollar correction, the original wrong form can remain on the recipient’s record and the amounts may be reported twice or under two form types.

Portal filing versus IRIS Application-to-Application (A2A)
The Taxpayer Portal is intended for manual work in the IRIS interface. A2A is the software-driven channel used by applications that transmit information returns to IRIS. The correction principle is the same, but the record-linking data is different.
| Consideration | Taxpayer Portal | A2A |
|---|---|---|
| How you start | Locate the transmission and select Correct/Replace. | Generate a correction through your IRIS-compatible software workflow. |
| Best fit | Manual filing and smaller or occasional correction batches. | Software-driven or high-volume transmission processes. |
| Link to the original | IRIS supplies the relationship when you select the filed record. | Each corrected record must include the original UniqueRecordId. |
| What can trigger a correction | Your review, a recipient report or an IRS notice. | Publication 5718 identifies an IRS error notice, transmitter review or recipient report as possible triggers. |
| Duplicate risk | Do not create a new original for an ordinary error. | Do not file the original record again; a duplicate report can result. |
A2A record linkage
Publication 5718 requires each corrected A2A record to include the original UniqueRecordId. That identifier is built from the original receipt, submission and record identifiers. Your software or technical process must carry the original identifier into the correction; a new identifier that is not linked to the filed record can prevent IRIS from treating the message as a correction.
If your application cannot identify the original receipt, submission and record identifiers, stop and retrieve them before transmitting. Sending an unlinked original is not a substitute for a correction.

Do you need to send the recipient a corrected 1099?
Yes. After submitting the IRIS correction, furnish the recipient a corrected statement. The IRS portal filing and the recipient copy are separate obligations: fixing the IRS record does not automatically deliver a corrected statement to the payee.
- Prepare the corrected statement using the same corrected information submitted to IRIS.
- Identify it as corrected in the manner required for that form and delivery method.
- Use the recipient’s current mailing address or approved electronic-delivery process.
- Keep proof of delivery, mailing or electronic availability with the IRIS transmission record.
- If the form should never have been issued, tell the recipient that the record was corrected to zero rather than leaving the recipient to interpret the change.
When a wrong form type requires two steps, the recipient should receive the corrected result: the zeroed record for the erroneous form and the correct form type with the reportable amounts.
Timing, confirmations and filing thresholds
When to correct
Submit the correction as soon as you identify the error. Prompt action reduces the chance that the recipient uses incorrect information on a tax return and gives you a cleaner record of why the correction was made.

What “48 hours” means
IRS Tax Tip 2025-05 says electronically filed 1099 returns can receive confirmation in as little as 48 hours. That is the IRS’s published statement for receiving an electronically filed return; it is not a promise that every correction will be processed, accepted or reflected within that period. Keep checking the transmission status and retain the confirmation information.
The electronic-filing threshold
The IRS states that electronic filing is required at 10 or more information returns under the applicable e-file regulations. Confirm the threshold for the current tax year before filing, because regulations and counting rules can change. IRIS is available free for businesses of any size, but the filing requirement still depends on the applicable tax-year rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the VOID box does not fix an IRIS-filed return
A VOID box is not the remedy for a return that has already been filed through IRIS. The void concept belongs to a form that is wrong before submission or to paper-form procedures; it does not withdraw an accepted electronic filing in the IRIS portal.
For context, IRS paper instructions use the CORRECTED checkbox for ordinary amount, code or checkbox errors. Paper TIN/name errors and wrong-form errors use a two-step process: first a corrected zero-dollar record, then a new original return with the correct TIN, name or form type. Those paper instructions do not replace the IRIS rule. An IRIS-filed return must be corrected in the IRIS channel.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Filing a second original instead of a correction
Symptom: You submit a new original with the corrected amount or TIN, while the first record remains unchanged.

Changing the wrong form type in one step
Symptom: You try to turn a filed 1099-MISC into a 1099-NEC by editing the existing record.
Fix: Submit the zero-dollar correction for the wrong form, then submit the correct form as an original return.
Zeroing only one amount field
Symptom: A return intended for the wrong recipient or a wrong-form correction still contains a dollar amount in another box.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: For a return that should not have been filed for that recipient, zero every amount. For a wrong-form correction, zero the money amounts on the erroneous record and review the entire record before submission.
Correcting the IRS record but not the recipient copy
Symptom: IRIS shows a correction, but the payee still has the original statement.
Fix: Furnish a corrected statement and retain delivery evidence. The recipient’s copy must match the corrected IRS filing.
Losing the original identifiers in A2A
Symptom: Software sends a corrected record without the original UniqueRecordId.

Recordkeeping checklist after submission
- Original transmission identifier and copy of the filed 1099.
- Reason for the correction and the date the error was discovered.
- Corrected transmission identifier, submission date and status.
- For A2A, the original UniqueRecordId and the component receipt, submission and record identifiers.
- Copy of the corrected recipient statement and proof it was furnished.
- For a wrong-form replacement, evidence of both the zero-dollar correction and the new original correct form.
- Any IRS notice or recipient communication that led to the correction.
These records let you demonstrate that the original was not simply refiled and that the correction was linked to the proper return.
Quick Recap
A practical decision tree
- Was the 1099 filed through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal? If yes, correct it through IRIS’s Correct/Replace function. If it was sent through A2A, use the A2A correction process and original UniqueRecordId.
- Is the form type correct? If yes, use a one-step correction for the amount, code, indicator, name, TIN or recipient error. If no, continue to the two-step process.
- Should the recipient have received any 1099? If no, submit the correction with zero in every amount field. If yes, enter the corrected information.
- Is the correction submitted? Save the new transmission and status; a draft on the Unsubmitted Forms page is not complete.
- Has the recipient received the corrected statement? Furnish it and retain proof.
Bottom line for each type of 1099 error
| Situation | Required action |
|---|---|
| Wrong amount, code, indicator, name or TIN | One-step correction through IRIS Correct/Replace. |
| 1099 issued to a recipient who should not have received one | One-step correction with all amounts zeroed. |
| Wrong form type | Two steps: zero the erroneous record, then file the correct form as original. |
| A2A correction | Include the original UniqueRecordId on every corrected record. |
| Recipient copy | Furnish a corrected statement after the IRS correction. |
| VOID box | Do not use it to repair a return already filed through IRIS. |
