The right fix depends on whether Social Security has made an initial decision. If your retirement application is still pending, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) promptly, identify the exact error or omission, and ask how to update the claim. There is no single public correction form for every pending-application mistake.
If SSA has already issued a decision and you believe it relied on wrong information or reached the wrong result, use the non-medical reconsideration process—normally Form SSA-561—not an informal edit. If you want to cancel the claim entirely, consider withdrawal with Form SSA-521; withdrawal is a separate remedy that can require repayment and affect other people’s benefits.

First, determine which situation applies
“I made a mistake” can describe three different administrative problems. The remedy, paperwork, and risk are different for each one.
| Situation | What you are trying to do | Usual route | Main concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application is pending and no initial decision has been issued | Correct an entry, add omitted information, or provide a missing document | Contact SSA and ask how to update the pending claim | SSA does not publish one universal correction form for every pending error |
| SSA issued an initial decision you believe is wrong | Challenge the determination | Request non-medical reconsideration online or with Form SSA-561 | File generally within 60 days after receiving the decision notice |
| You want to cancel the retirement claim | Withdraw the application | Request withdrawal with Form SSA-521 | Repayment, consent from affected beneficiaries, and a limited time window may apply |
| Reconsideration did not resolve the dispute | Continue the appeal | Request an administrative law judge hearing with Form HA-501 or a letter | Follow the reconsideration notice and its filing period |
SSA’s internal instructions distinguish a pending application from an appealable initial determination. Do not file an appeal simply to change a field while the claim is still awaiting its first decision. Wait for SSA’s instructions on updating the pending claim, unless a decision has already been issued.

How to correct a pending retirement application
A pending claim is one for which SSA has not yet made the initial determination. Examples include a wrong date, an omitted employer, an incorrect earnings detail, a missing answer about another benefit, or a document you did not upload.
1. Contact SSA as soon as you discover the error
Use one of SSA’s retirement-application contact channels: call 1-800-772-1213, use the online pathway available for your claim, or contact a local Social Security office. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. Tell the representative that the retirement application is pending and that you need to correct a specific item.
There is no public, all-purpose “edit submitted application” form identified for every type of pending mistake. The correct process may depend on what you entered, whether SSA has begun processing the claim, and whether the correction changes eligibility or the benefit amount. Ask the representative exactly what SSA needs: an online update, a written statement, a document, an appointment, or another submission.

Have your confirmation or claim information available. Explain:
- Which answer, date, name, address, employment detail, or benefit choice is wrong.
- What the correct information should be.
- When you submitted the application and when you noticed the mistake.
- Whether the error affects your requested start date, earnings record, marital or family information, or another person’s potential benefit.
- What records support the correction.
A clear description helps SSA route the request. Avoid sending a general message such as “please fix my application” without identifying the field or omission. If several entries are wrong, list each one separately so the representative can confirm that every item was recorded.
3. Follow the channel SSA gives you
If SSA tells you to submit a written correction, use the method it specifies and keep a complete copy. Include your name, identifying information requested by SSA, the claim or confirmation details you have, the incorrect information, the corrected information, and a short explanation. If SSA requests evidence, send copies rather than irreplaceable originals unless the agency specifically instructs otherwise.
If an online update is available, save the submission confirmation. For a local-office, fax, or mail submission, keep the delivery record, fax confirmation, or a dated copy of what you sent. These records let you show when you reported the mistake if processing continues without the correction.

Do not delay filing a retirement application solely because every supporting document is not yet available. SSA cautions that delaying an application can cause a person to lose benefits that would otherwise be due. File or correct promptly, then provide requested evidence through the channel SSA identifies.
What to do after SSA issues a decision
Once SSA has made an initial determination, the issue is no longer an informal edit to a pending application. If you disagree with the non-medical decision—for example, because SSA used incorrect information, calculated the benefit incorrectly, or selected the wrong effective date—request reconsideration.
Use the non-medical reconsideration process
SSA describes reconsideration as asking the agency to review a decision you do not agree with. Its Form SSA-561 is the Request for Reconsideration. SSA also provides an online reconsideration process and accepts the form through a local office under the instructions for the claim.

In the request, identify the determination you dispute and explain why. State the correction you believe is needed, not merely that the result is unfair. Attach relevant records, such as a notice showing the disputed date, an earnings document, or other information that directly addresses the determination. Keep a copy of the completed request and everything submitted with it. Organize attachments by issue and refer to them in your explanation so the reviewer can connect each record to the disputed entry.
Watch the filing period
SSA generally requires a reconsideration request within 60 days after you receive the decision. Use the date and instructions on your own notice, because the notice controls the case-specific filing directions. If the period may have expired, contact SSA immediately and ask whether an explanation for late filing and an extension request are available. An extension is not automatic. Do not assume that a phone conversation by itself preserves the appeal; ask how SSA wants the request formally filed.
Do not use withdrawal to solve an ordinary clerical error
Withdrawal ends the application rather than correcting one answer. It may create repayment obligations and can affect benefits payable to a spouse, child, or other person. Use reconsideration when the objective is to have SSA correct or review the decision; reserve withdrawal for a genuine decision to cancel the claim after reviewing its consequences.
When withdrawal is the remedy
Form SSA-521, Request for Withdrawal of Application, is the form for asking SSA to withdraw a claim. It is not the form for changing one incorrect entry while keeping the application active.
Withdrawal after a decision can have financial consequences
If SSA has already decided the claim, written consent from people whose benefits would be affected may be required. SSA may also require repayment of benefits already paid, or assurance that the required repayment will be made. Because withdrawal can affect more than the applicant, review the SSA withdrawal instructions before signing. Consider whether a spouse, child, or another beneficiary has received or could receive a benefit based on your claim.

Retirement withdrawal has a limited window
For old-age retirement benefits, SSA’s public instructions describe withdrawal as available only within 12 months after the first month of entitlement. The applicant may not previously have withdrawn an old-age application. These rules make withdrawal a limited, generally one-time choice rather than a routine correction method.
Ask SSA for a case-specific calculation
Before filing SSA-521, ask SSA what must be repaid, whether another person’s benefits are involved, and what entitlement month applies to the 12-month window. Do not assume that withdrawing automatically erases every payment or restores every option without financial consequences. Ask for the answer in writing when possible, and keep it with the form and any payment records.
If reconsideration does not fix the problem
A claimant who still disagrees after reconsideration can request a hearing before an administrative law judge. SSA identifies Form HA-501, Request for Hearing by Administrative Law Judge, or a letter as the next-level request. The reconsideration decision notice explains how to file and the applicable deadline, generally 60 days after receiving that decision.
In a hearing request, identify the reconsideration decision and explain the issue you still dispute. Follow the notice’s submission directions and keep proof of filing. A hearing request is for continuing an appeal after reconsideration; it is not a substitute for reporting a simple correction while the original application is still pending. If the notice lists a different submission route or deadline, follow that notice rather than relying on a general description.
Forms, contact routes, and what each one does
| Item | Purpose | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSA retirement contact channels | Report a mistake in a pending claim and receive case-specific instructions | Before an initial decision | No single public correction form covers every pending error |
| Form SSA-561, Request for Reconsideration | Challenge an initial non-medical determination | After SSA issues a decision you dispute | Generally due within 60 days after receiving the decision |
| Form SSA-521, Request for Withdrawal of Application | Cancel the application | When you intentionally want to withdraw, not merely edit an entry | May require repayment and consent; retirement withdrawal has a 12-month and one-time restriction |
| Form HA-501, Request for Hearing by Administrative Law Judge | Continue an appeal after reconsideration | After an unfavorable or disputed reconsideration decision | Follow the notice and its generally 60-day filing period |
SSA forms are free. SSA’s forms index identifies upload, fax, or mail options for selected forms. Do not buy a form or pay an unofficial service merely to obtain one. Use the agency’s official website, phone number, or office instructions to obtain the current version and filing directions.
Common mistakes that make correction harder
Waiting until a payment problem appears
Reporting an error immediately gives SSA more opportunity to address it while the claim is pending. Waiting can turn a straightforward update into a disagreement with an issued determination, so contact SSA when you discover the problem.
Choosing reconsideration before a decision exists
Reconsideration challenges an initial determination. If SSA has not made that determination, report the correction through SSA’s retirement-application channels instead.

Using SSA-521 for a typo
Withdrawal cancels the claim and can trigger repayment and third-party effects. It is disproportionate to a spelling mistake, wrong date, or omitted document unless you genuinely intend to cancel the application.

Sending unsupported explanations
A reconsideration request should connect the disputed determination to relevant records. A concise explanation plus documents that address the exact issue is more useful than a long narrative unrelated to the calculation or date in the notice.
Missing the notice deadline
Keep the decision and reconsideration notices together with your calendar. If circumstances may prevent timely filing, contact SSA before the period ends; if it has already passed, contact SSA immediately rather than assuming the request is impossible.
Failing to distinguish correction from a new choice
Changing a factual error is different from changing your mind about the month you want benefits to start or whether you want benefits at all. Tell SSA which objective applies. A request that sounds like a correction but actually cancels or changes the claim can require a different form and produce different consequences.

Examples of the correct path
You entered the wrong birth date, and the claim is still pending
Call SSA or use the available online or local-office channel. State the incorrect and correct dates, ask whether proof is required, and follow the instructed submission method. Do not file SSA-561 unless SSA has issued an initial decision you are challenging.
SSA’s award notice uses the wrong earnings information
The notice is an initial determination. Request non-medical reconsideration with SSA-561 or SSA’s online process, identify the earnings entry, explain the correction, and attach records supporting it. File within the period stated in the notice, generally 60 days after receipt.
You changed your mind about claiming retirement benefits
Review SSA’s withdrawal instructions and SSA-521 before acting. Ask about the entitlement month, repayment, and any affected beneficiaries. Confirm that the retirement withdrawal window and one-time rule allow the request.
SSA denied reconsideration
Read the reconsideration notice and, if you still disagree, request an administrative law judge hearing using HA-501 or a letter as directed. Explain the continuing dispute and retain proof of submission.
You forgot to report another benefit on the pending application
Contact SSA promptly, identify the unanswered or incorrect question, and ask whether the agency wants an online update, written statement, or supporting document. Because the claim has not reached an initial decision, use the pending-claim instructions rather than an appeal form.

Personal checklist before you contact SSA
- Confirm whether an initial decision has been issued.
- Write down the exact incorrect entry or omitted information.
- Gather the application confirmation, decision notice if any, and supporting records.
- Decide whether you want a correction, a reconsideration, or a complete withdrawal.
- Use only SSA’s official channels and forms.
- Record the date, method, and substance of every contact.
- Keep copies of every form, letter, attachment, and confirmation.
- Calendar the applicable filing period from the notice.
- Ask whether another person’s benefits or a repayment obligation could be affected.
- Confirm where and how SSA wants each item submitted.
The practical rule is simple: correct a pending claim through SSA’s instructions, challenge an issued determination through reconsideration, and use withdrawal only when you truly intend to cancel the retirement application. Acting promptly and preserving a paper trail protects your ability to get the record and the benefit decision reviewed accurately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit my Social Security retirement application online after submitting it?
SSA does not identify one universal online edit function or correction form for every pending retirement application. Contact SSA through the channel available for your claim and ask whether an online update is possible or whether the agency needs a statement, document, or appointment. Save any confirmation of an online submission.
Should I file Form SSA-561 if I discover a mistake before SSA decides my claim?
Generally no. SSA-561 is for requesting reconsideration of an initial determination. Before a decision exists, report the exact error through SSA’s retirement-application contact channels and follow the instructions SSA gives you for updating the pending claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is the deadline to request reconsideration?
SSA generally requires a request within 60 days after you receive the decision. Your notice controls the case-specific instructions. If the period may have expired, contact SSA immediately and ask about explaining a late filing and requesting an extension; an extension is not automatic.
Is SSA-521 the form to fix a wrong date or spelling error?
No. SSA-521 requests withdrawal of the application, which cancels the claim. It is not a routine correction form. Withdrawal can require repayment and may affect a spouse, child, or another beneficiary, so use it only when you genuinely intend to withdraw.
Can I withdraw a retirement application whenever I want?
For old-age retirement benefits, SSA’s public instructions describe withdrawal as available only within 12 months after the first month of entitlement, and the applicant may not previously have withdrawn an old-age application. Ask SSA to confirm your entitlement month, repayment requirements, and eligibility before filing SSA-521.
What if reconsideration does not correct the mistake?
You can generally request an administrative law judge hearing after reconsideration. Follow the reconsideration notice, which identifies the filing method and deadline. SSA identifies Form HA-501 or a letter as ways to request the hearing, generally within 60 days after receiving the reconsideration decision.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No. SSA forms are free. The agency’s forms index identifies upload, fax, or mail options for selected forms. Use official SSA channels and do not buy a form or pay an unofficial service simply to obtain or submit it.
What records should I keep while correcting an application?
Keep the application confirmation, every notice, copies of forms and attachments, delivery or fax confirmations, online submission receipts, and notes showing when and how you contacted SSA. Also record the exact incorrect and corrected information and any instructions SSA gives you.
The Bottom Line
Check whether SSA has issued an initial decision. For a pending claim, contact SSA promptly and follow its instructions for correcting the specific entry. After a decision, use reconsideration—generally within 60 days—rather than trying to edit the application. Use SSA-521 only for a deliberate withdrawal after reviewing repayment, beneficiary-consent, and 12-month retirement limits. Keep copies and proof of every submission.
