First identify the tax authority that processed the return, then check whether the return is still processing, the refund failed and was returned, or the payment was accepted into another person’s account. The United States, India and South Africa unlock corrections at different points and require different verification.
Use the country section below that matches your return and follow its status-specific route. Do not submit a replacement account until you have confirmed the account and routing details with your bank.

Start with the refund status, not the bank-change form
A bank-detail correction is controlled by the tax authority’s payment status. Changing information in a portal may do nothing if the return has already posted, while a failed payment may require a formal reissue request rather than an edit to the original return.
Identify these three facts
- Jurisdiction: Select the country whose tax authority issued the refund. The procedures below cover the United States (IRS), India (Income Tax Department e-Filing) and South Africa (SARS).
- Tax year and return status: Have the tax year, filing confirmation and current refund status available before contacting the authority.
- What happened to the transfer: A return that has not posted, a returned or failed refund, and a deposit accepted by somebody else require different remedies.
| Situation | Correct first action | Why the route differs |
|---|---|---|
| Return is still processing or has not posted | Ask whether the authority can stop the direct deposit before it is sent. | Some authorities can intercept an outgoing payment; a normal account edit may be unavailable. |
| Refund failed or the bank returned it | Validate or nominate a replacement account, then use the authority’s reissue process. | The original payment has already failed, so the authority needs a new payment instruction. |
| Refund was accepted into an account belonging to someone else | Contact the receiving financial institution immediately and follow the authority’s tracing procedure. | The tax authority may not be able to reverse a completed transfer. |
| Account details are wrong but no failure or notice is shown | Check the authority’s specific eligibility rule before changing anything. | For example, the IRS generally permits a U.S. update only after issuing CP53E. |
Pending, failed and misdirected are not the same
A pending or unposted return may still be in the authority’s processing queue. A failed refund normally means the payment was rejected or returned, so the authority needs a new instruction. A misdirected payment is different again: the transfer reached an account and was accepted, even if that account was not yours. The same account number error can therefore produce three different remedies.

Check the authority’s own refund-status service and notices rather than relying only on a bank alert. Record the wording of the status, the date it changed and any notice number. That record helps an agent determine whether a stop request, reissue, trace or bank recovery effort is available.
United States: IRS procedures
The IRS route depends on whether the return has posted, whether the deposit was rejected, and whether the IRS issued a CP53E notice. The controlling instructions are in the IRS refund inquiries FAQ.
If the IRS issued CP53E
CP53E asks you to provide new or updated direct-deposit information through your IRS Online Account. Sign in using the link and instructions in the notice, submit the replacement account there, and retain the confirmation. The notice is the trigger that unlocks this online update.
Use the account information exactly as confirmed by the financial institution. Check every digit of the routing and account numbers, the account type and the legal name on the account. The IRS advises checking those details with the bank and not requesting a deposit into an account that is not in your own name.
If the return posted but no CP53E was issued
The IRS says a posted return’s bank information cannot be changed when no CP53E notice was issued. Do not file an amended return merely to replace a routing or account number; an amended return does not create the CP53E update path. Continue checking the refund status and use the remedy that matches what happened to the payment.
Repeatedly editing profile information, sending unrequested bank statements or filing another return will not substitute for the notice-based process. Keep the filed-return acknowledgement and status details available if you need to ask the IRS what event is pending.
If the return has not posted and you want to stop the deposit
Ask the IRS to stop the direct deposit by calling 800-829-1040. This option applies while the return has not posted and is intended to prevent the payment from being sent to the wrong account. Have your identity and return information ready for the call.

A stop request is not the same as changing the bank account. Ask the representative what will happen after the deposit is stopped and what payment method or follow-up is available for your case. Note the call date, any case reference and the instructions you receive.
If the account or routing number failed validation
The IRS may issue CP53E when a number fails its validation check. Follow that notice’s online-account procedure rather than sending unrequested bank documents. Before submitting the replacement, confirm the routing number, account number and account ownership with the financial institution. The IRS advises against requesting a deposit into an account that is not in your own name.

A number can appear plausible and still fail the bank’s validation. Ask the bank whether the account is open, active and able to receive an electronic tax payment. If the account is a joint, representative or otherwise nonstandard account, confirm that it meets the IRS payment requirements before using it.
If the bank rejected and returned the refund
A valid-looking account can still be rejected by the bank and returned to the IRS. If the IRS issues CP53E, use the notice route to provide a new account. If no CP53E appears, the IRS FAQ says the posted return cannot have its bank information changed; monitor the refund instructions and contact the IRS for the status-specific next step rather than repeatedly changing portal data.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the bank’s rejection or return information if it provides one. It can help explain why the payment failed, but the IRS determines which remedy is available and whether a notice will be issued.
If another person’s account accepted the refund
Contact that financial institution directly and ask it to investigate and return the misdirected payment. The IRS directs the taxpayer to work with the institution that received the funds. The IRS also states that it cannot compel a bank to return money it accepted into another account.
Give the institution the payment date, amount, trace information and proof that the refund was intended for you, while using only its verified contact channel. Do not assume that the IRS can simply redirect a completed deposit. If the account holder or bank will not return accepted funds, ask the IRS what tracing documentation is appropriate, knowing that the agency cannot force the bank to release the money.
Tracing a missing deposit with Form 3911
If you have contacted the financial institution and five calendar days have passed without the expected deposit, the IRS says you may file Form 3911 to start a refund trace. The agency states that a bank may take up to 90 days to respond to the initial trace and that resolution may take up to 120 days. These are IRS-published procedural periods, not a guarantee that every case will finish within them.
Do not file the trace before checking with the institution that should have received the payment. Keep copies of the completed form, delivery proof and any bank case number. A trace follows the payment; it does not correct an account number by itself.
Refunds routed through a preparer or provider
A refund-anticipation loan, prepaid arrangement or check routed through a tax preparer or software provider may involve that provider’s financial institution rather than a direct IRS deposit. Contact the provider and the institution named in the payment paperwork, while keeping the IRS status information for reference.
Ask who actually received the IRS payment and whether the arrangement converted it to a check, card credit or loan payoff. The provider may have its own recovery or replacement process, separate from the IRS CP53E and Form 3911 procedures.

India: Income Tax Department refund reissue
India’s Refund Reissue service is designed for a registered e-Filing user whose filed return has a failed refund. The official Refund reissue User Manual requires a validated e-Filing bank account and access to an available e-verification method.
The service is not a general pre-filing bank edit and is not intended for a refund that has already been successfully credited to an unrelated account. First confirm that the portal identifies the refund as failed and that you can sign in as the registered user.
Step 1: Validate the replacement account
If the intended account is not validated, open My Bank Account in the e-Filing portal and add and pre-validate it before requesting reissue. The portal asks for:
- Account number
- Account type
- Holder type
- IFSC
Complete the portal’s e-verification. The separate My Bank Account User Manual explains the add-and-validation flow. A validated account can then be nominated for a refund.
Check the account details against the bank’s records before submitting. Validation can fail when the account number, PAN linkage or account-holder name does not match the information held by the bank and the tax portal.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 2: Submit the refund-reissue request
- Sign in to the Income Tax Department e-Filing portal.
- Open Services > Refund Reissue.
- Create a new request and select the failed-refund record shown for the return.
- Choose the validated bank account that should receive the payment.
- Complete e-verification using an available method.
- Save the transaction ID displayed after successful verification.
The portal generates confirmation to the email address and mobile number registered with the account. Keep the transaction ID with the return acknowledgement and bank confirmation. If the request does not show the failed refund or the account is not selectable, resolve the validation or status issue instead of creating duplicate requests.
Fixing common bank-validation failures
The portal’s validation result determines the next fix:
- Account-number mismatch: Correct the account number in the e-Filing portal and submit validation again.
- PAN not linked to the account: Ask the bank to link the PAN, then retry validation.
- Name mismatch: Ask the bank to correct the account-holder name or otherwise align the bank record with the tax record before retrying.
- Closed or inactive account: Add and validate a different active account.
- Validation still cannot be completed: Use another account that can be verified or, where applicable, an ECS mandate with the refund-reissue request.
Do not select an account merely because it appears in the portal; it must be validated and capable of receiving the refund. If you change the bank record, allow the portal and bank information to align before attempting validation again.
What to preserve after reissue
Save the transaction ID, the portal confirmation, the failed-refund record and the email or mobile confirmation. These identify the exact reissue request if you need to follow up. Keep the bank’s confirmation that the selected account is active and linked correctly, but upload documents only through the official portal when requested.

South Africa: SARS banking-detail changes
SARS electronically verifies bank details before paying an auto-assessed refund. If the details do not match, SARS may ask you to verify them. The current requirements and channels are in the SARS guide GEN-GEN-41-G01 – Change of Banking Details – External Guide, effective 25 April 2025.
Permitted channels
Use the channel that fits your access and case:
- The personal-income-tax banking-detail update button on eFiling.
- RAV01 in the registered-details area of eFiling.
- Submission together with an ITR12 return.
- A SARS mobile tax unit.
- Email, only in exceptional circumstances described by SARS.
- An in-person SARS office visit when electronic channels cannot be used.
SARS does not accept banking-detail change requests by telephone or post. Select an authorized electronic or in-person route and retain the submission reference. Do not send bank details to an address found in an unsolicited message; use the current contact route published by SARS.
Account rules
Under the SARS guide, the replacement account must be a South African cheque, savings or transmission account in the taxpayer’s name. Credit-card accounts, bond accounts and foreign bank accounts are not permitted for this purpose. A joint or third-party arrangement may require additional handling, so confirm eligibility before submitting it.
The account rule applies even when the refund is being corrected after an auto-assessment. An account that is convenient but outside these categories can be rejected during electronic verification.
Evidence and identity checks
SARS’s banking-details page lists identity and bank evidence requirements for different taxpayer types. The document list varies by the taxpayer and the reason for the change; use the current checklist linked from SARS rather than assuming one set of documents applies to every case.
Prepare the requested identity proof and bank evidence in the format and timeframe SARS specifies. A mismatch may result in a request to verify details rather than an immediate payment. Respond through the same authorized profile or channel and retain the reference for the update.
Stopping an auto-assessed refund headed to the wrong account
For an auto-assessed taxpayer who sees incorrect banking details, follow the correction and verification instructions in SARS’s FAQ, I’ve been auto assessed but need to update my Banking Details, how can I stop the refund from being paid into the wrong account?. Act through eFiling or another authorized SARS channel before the payment is released, and respond to any verification request shown in the profile.
An eFiling edit does not by itself reverse a payment that has already been released and accepted. If the transfer has completed, contact SARS through an authorized channel and the receiving bank for the case-specific recovery steps.

How the three systems differ
| Jurisdiction | When an update or reissue is available | Account preparation | Verification and channel | If another account received the money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States (IRS) | Online replacement is tied to a CP53E notice. A posted return without CP53E generally cannot have bank information changed. | Confirm routing and account numbers with the bank; use an account in your own name. | IRS Online Account after CP53E; call 800-829-1040 to ask about stopping a deposit if the return has not posted; Form 3911 can start a trace after the stated five-day wait. | Work directly with the receiving financial institution. The IRS says it cannot compel return of funds accepted by that bank. |
| India | Refund Reissue is for a filed return whose refund failed. | Replacement account must be validated in e-Filing and then nominated. | Services > Refund Reissue, account selection and e-verification; save the transaction ID. | Use the bank and authority channels for the specific failed or misdirected-payment status; the reissue flow applies to failed refunds, not an already accepted payment. |
| South Africa (SARS) | Update details and complete SARS verification before an auto-assessed refund is paid, or when SARS requests correction. | South African cheque, savings or transmission account in the taxpayer’s name. | eFiling update, RAV01, ITR12, mobile unit, exceptional email or office visit; no telephone or post requests. | Contact SARS through an authorized channel and the receiving bank; do not assume an eFiling edit alone reverses a completed transfer. |
Quick decision guide
- Check the jurisdiction and tax year shown on the return.
- Read the latest refund-status message and identify whether the return is unposted, the payment failed, or the payment was accepted.
- Look for the jurisdiction-specific trigger: CP53E in the United States, a failed-refund record in India, or a SARS verification/update request.
- Prepare an eligible account and verify its digits and ownership with the bank.
- Use only the listed portal, form, phone or in-person route.
- Save every receipt, transaction ID, notice and case reference, then monitor the status.
Checks that prevent another failed refund
- Read every digit of the account and routing number against a bank statement or confirmation from the institution.
- Confirm that the account is open, active and able to receive the type of payment being sent.
- Match the legal account-holder name and tax identifier where the authority requires it.
- Use the tax authority’s own portal or published phone and office channels; do not email bank details to an unverified address.
- Save the notice number, submission receipt, transaction ID, call date and any trace or case number.
- Check the refund status again after submitting the correction, but do not create duplicate requests unless the authority instructs you to.
- Keep the old account information and the corrected information separately so you can explain exactly what changed.
- Check whether a preparer, refund-anticipation lender or payment provider sits between the authority and your bank.
What to have ready before contacting the authority
Prepare the documents and facts that let an agent or portal match the request to the correct return:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Taxpayer identification and identity-verification information.
- Tax year, return acknowledgement or filing confirmation.
- Refund amount and the latest status message.
- Bank name, account type, account number and routing or IFSC details, as applicable.
- The CP53E notice, failed-refund record, SARS verification request or other payment notice.
- Evidence that the account belongs to you and is active, if the authority or bank requests it.
- Any bank rejection notice, payment trace information or provider paperwork.
Never publish account credentials, one-time passwords or full bank details in a public forum. Tax authorities and banks use secure portals and verified contact methods for this information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my bank account information after I filed my tax return?
It depends on the country and payment status. The IRS generally allows an online replacement only when it issues CP53E; India uses Refund Reissue after a failed refund and requires a validated account; SARS provides specified update channels and verifies the account before payment.
What should I do if I entered an incorrect routing or account number for a U.S. direct-deposit refund?
Check whether the return has posted and whether CP53E was issued. If the return has not posted, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to ask about stopping the deposit. If CP53E was issued, submit the corrected details through IRS Online Account. If another account accepted the payment, contact that financial institution.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I reissue a failed Indian income-tax refund?
Validate the intended account in My Bank Account, then sign in and choose Services > Refund Reissue. Select the failed-refund record, choose the validated account, complete e-verification and save the transaction ID.
Why did my Indian bank account fail validation?
Common causes include an account-number mismatch, PAN not linked to the account, a name mismatch, or a closed or inactive account. Correct the portal data, ask the bank to fix the linkage or name, or validate another active account.
Which South African bank accounts can SARS use for a refund?
The SARS guide specifies a South African cheque, savings or transmission account in the taxpayer’s name. Credit-card, bond and foreign bank accounts are not permitted under that guide.
Can I change SARS banking details by phone or post?
No. SARS lists eFiling, RAV01, an ITR12 submission, mobile tax units, exceptional email and an office visit when electronic means cannot be used. It does not accept banking-detail change requests by telephone or post.
How long does an IRS refund trace take?
After contacting the financial institution, the IRS says you may file Form 3911 if five calendar days pass without the expected deposit. A bank may take up to 90 days to respond to the initial trace, and resolution may take up to 120 days.
What if the refund went to someone else’s account?
Contact the receiving financial institution immediately. The IRS says the taxpayer must work with that institution and that the IRS cannot compel a bank to return funds it accepted. In India or South Africa, use the authority’s authorized channel as well as the bank for the specific payment status.
The Bottom Line
Start with the tax authority and refund status, not a generic bank-edit request. Use CP53E and the IRS Online Account for an eligible U.S. update, validate an Indian account before filing Refund Reissue, and use SARS’s approved channels and South African account rules. If another account accepted the money, contact that institution immediately and preserve every notice, receipt and trace reference.
