Search using the refund application reference number (ARN), then select UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT in the Bank Validation Status column. You can choose another account already listed, or first add or correct an account through a non-core registration amendment and then select it for the refund.
What the correction process actually changes
A GST refund account is selected from the bank accounts associated with your GST registration. Correcting the account therefore has two parts: making a valid account available in registration, and assigning that account to the refund application. Changing your bank details in a separate banking system does not by itself change the account attached to a GST refund.

The appropriate action depends on where the refund is in its processing cycle and why validation failed. PFMS (the Public Financial Management System) validates the account after you file refund application RFD-01 and again after the tax officer issues payment order RFD-05. A refund can therefore pass the first check and still fail at the payment stage.
Identify your refund’s stage before changing anything
| Refund stage | What is being checked | What you do | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
| After RFD-01, before RFD-05 | PFMS validates the account supplied with the refund application. | Correct or add the account through a non-core amendment, then use UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT against the ARN. | The updated account is sent for PFMS validation before the officer can issue RFD-05. |
| After RFD-05 | PFMS validates the account in the payment order before disbursal. | Correct or add the account and notify the tax officer handling the refund. | If incorrect details caused the failure, the officer must invalidate and replace the payment order after correction. |
| Technical file-exchange failure | The GST System and PFMS could not exchange or process the file correctly. | Check the displayed error and avoid changing a correct account solely because of a technical message. | GST System is expected to correct the file and send it back to PFMS for revalidation. |
The GST Portal tells you where the refund application is in processing. PFMS tells you whether the bank account passed validation and whether payment was disbursed. Check both when their statuses do not appear to match.

Use this decision guide before filing an amendment
- A different account is already visible: If the account is accurate and belongs to the taxpayer associated with the GSTIN, use UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT and select it. Do not create a new amendment merely to choose an account that is already available.
- The required account is missing: Add it through the non-core registration amendment in FORM GST REG-14. After it becomes available, return to the refund ARN and assign it there.
- The listed account has a wrong number, type or IFSC: Correct the registration record through the same amendment workflow, then update the refund selection.
- The error identifies a technical file problem: Preserve the message and allow the GST System/PFMS revalidation path to operate. Replacing a correct account will not repair a file-exchange error.
- RFD-05 has already been issued: Correcting registration is only the first step. The proper officer must invalidate and reissue the payment order when incorrect details caused the post-order failure.
Bank details that have already been auto-populated cannot be switched as a general preference. The January 2026 GST refund handbook states that a change is allowed only when there is a validation error relating to those details.
Fastest route when Bank Validation Status is failed
- Sign in to the GST Portal. Use the GSTIN credentials associated with the refund application.
- Open the refund tracker. Go to Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.
- Find the application. Search by the refund ARN. The tracker also allows searches by filing year.
- Open the bank-action control. In the Bank Validation Status column, select UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT.
- Choose the corrected account. Select a valid account already shown in the dropdown. If the required account is absent or its details are wrong, stop and complete the non-core registration amendment described below.
- Submit the update and record the result. Keep the ARN, amendment acknowledgement number and the displayed status for follow-up with the proper officer if required.
This route is available when GSTN has exposed a failed validation for that ARN. The January 2026 GST refund handbook states that changes to auto-populated bank details are not permitted unless there is a validation error relating to those details. A successful registration amendment by itself does not retarget an existing refund; the account must also be selected in the refund tracker.
Add or correct the bank account through a non-core amendment
Use the registration amendment when the account you need is not in the refund dropdown or when the account number, type or IFSC is incorrect. The amendment is filed in FORM GST REG-14 through the GST Portal’s non-core fields.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrepare the information before opening the form
Have the exact account number, account type, current IFSC, bank name, branch details and PAN linked to the account available. Ask the bank for confirmation when an account has been transferred, a branch has merged, an IFSC has changed or an account has been dormant. This avoids consuming validation attempts with guesses and gives you evidence if the officer asks why the details changed.
Enter the bank details
Enter the complete bank account number, select the account type and provide the IFSC. Use the IFSC belonging to the branch where the account is maintained, not a similarly named branch or an old code. Ask the bank to confirm the current IFSC if the account was moved, merged or converted.
Retrieve and review the branch information
Use the portal option to retrieve branch information from the IFSC. Check the bank name and branch returned by the system before continuing. An IFSC that is inactive in PFMS or cannot be found in PFMS can fail even when the number was typed correctly.
Check the account and PAN match
Review the account number and account type character by character. The GST Portal guide says the PAN maintained with the bank should match the PAN provided for the GSTIN for successful verification. If the account belongs to a different PAN holder, resolve the ownership or mandate issue with the bank before relying on it for the refund. A joint or otherwise restricted account may need the bank to correct its customer record before electronic validation can succeed.

Enter the amendment details and evidence
Enter the effective amendment date and the reason for adding or correcting the account. Upload at least one supporting document as required by the portal. Use a document that clearly connects the account to the registered taxpayer and shows the relevant account details; keep the original available if the officer requests clarification.

Submit with DSC or EVC
Submit the non-core amendment using the authorised signatory’s Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Electronic Verification Code (EVC), according to the taxpayer’s registration requirements. Save the acknowledgement and note the amendment status in the bank-account status area. If submission fails, record the exact portal message rather than repeatedly changing correct details.
Wait for the account to appear in the refund selector
After the amendment is processed and the account is available, return to the refund tracker, search the ARN and use UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT to select the corrected account. Adding an account to registration is not the same as assigning it to an existing refund; both actions must be completed.
The non-core account-entry guide describes a maximum of 20 validation attempts per day. That is a portal limit stated in the guide, not a target or a reason to submit repeated guesses. Recheck the source details before trying again.
Why GST refund bank validation fails
Incorrect bank name
PFMS may reject a bank name that does not correspond to the account or to the bank record returned for the IFSC. Compare the portal’s retrieved bank information with the bank’s confirmation rather than relying on an old passbook entry. If the bank has changed its name after a merger, use the current record returned by the portal and confirm the transition with the bank.
IFSC mismatch
An IFSC mismatch can occur when the code was entered incorrectly, the account moved to another branch, or the branch’s code changed. Retrieve the branch details again after entering the code and correct the registration record if the returned information is wrong.
IFSC inactive in PFMS
A valid-looking IFSC can still be inactive in PFMS. Ask the bank whether the branch code is currently active for electronic government payments. Replacing the account with one using an active, correctly verified IFSC may be necessary.
IFSC not found in PFMS
If PFMS cannot find the IFSC, the code may be obsolete, mistyped or not yet present in its directory. Confirm the current code with the bank and use the corrected account details in the non-core amendment.

Account not in use or suspended
The portal guide cautions that an account can show an error status when it is not in use or has been suspended. Read the exact status displayed instead of treating every non-green status as the same failure. The bank may need to reactivate the account or remove a restriction before validation can succeed.

PAN mismatch
PFMS and the GST Portal rely on the PAN associated with the bank account and the PAN recorded for the GSTIN. A mismatch can block validation even when the account number and IFSC are accurate. Obtain a bank correction or use an account held under the matching PAN.
Track the correction on both portals
GST Portal tracking
On the GST Portal, go to Services > Refunds > Track Application Status. Search by filing year or ARN. This view is for the refund application’s processing position and for actions such as UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT. The ARN is the key reference to preserve in every communication about the refund.
PFMS tracking before RFD-05
After filing RFD-01, use PFMS’s GST Registered view. Search by GSTIN or account number to see bank-validation information for the registered taxpayer.

Once the officer issues RFD-05, use PFMS’s GST Successfully Processed view to look for the payment. If no result appears there, the advisory says to check GST Under Process for validation errors.
Keep screenshots or downloaded status records showing the ARN, account selected, error text and dates. These details help the officer distinguish an incorrect account from a technical file problem. GST Portal and PFMS labels are not interchangeable: one describes application processing, while the other reports validation and disbursal.
What changes after the payment order has already been issued?
Correcting registration details after RFD-05 does not automatically rewrite the existing payment order. Under the January 2026 GST refund handbook, the taxpayer can rectify the account or add another account through a non-core amendment in FORM GST REG-14. The updated account then appears in the refund dashboard dropdown and is sent to PFMS.
If PFMS reports that the account is invalid after RFD-05, the payment order is invalidated and the proper officer must issue a replacement order after the account is corrected. The replacement order has a new reference number, but the original ARN, sanction order number and refund amount remain unchanged.

Contact the officer or jurisdiction handling the refund with the ARN, the amendment acknowledgement and the PFMS error. Explain that the account has been corrected and that a replacement RFD-05 is required when the failure is due to incorrect details. A new bank account alone does not complete this post-order step. If the failure is technical rather than caused by your data, ask that the record be returned for system revalidation instead of requesting an unnecessary replacement account.

Separate technical failures from wrong account details
The PFMS advisory distinguishes a technical file-exchange problem from incorrect taxpayer data.
- Technical file-exchange problem: GST System is expected to correct the record and send it to PFMS for revalidation. Do not replace a correct account solely to respond to a technical error.
- Incorrect account details: Correct or add the account through the non-core amendment. If RFD-05 has already been issued, the proper officer must reissue the payment order after correction.
If the error message does not clearly identify the cause, compare the bank name, account number, account type, IFSC, account activity and PAN before filing another amendment. Preserve the exact message so the tax officer can route a system issue correctly. Avoid assuming that a delay or an empty PFMS search automatically means the account is wrong; check the relevant PFMS view for the refund stage.
Refund timing and interest
The January 2026 GST refund handbook summarizes the general statutory rule that when an ordered refund is not credited within 60 days of receipt of the refund application, interest at 6% applies from the day after that period expires until the refund is credited. This is a general refund-timing provision, not a correction-specific service-level promise. Neither the handbook nor the GSTN materials reviewed establish an average correction time, a guaranteed revalidation time or a success-rate statistic.
A bank correction can add steps to the practical path to disbursal, particularly when RFD-05 must be replaced. Keep the original filing date, ARN, sanction details and every status date so any interest question can be considered against the statutory rule rather than against an assumed portal deadline.
When to involve a GST practitioner
You can complete a straightforward account amendment yourself when the bank confirms the details and the portal accepts the submission. Consider optional help from a GST practitioner or tax professional when the account is jointly held, the PAN or legal name has changed, the refund is already at the RFD-05 stage, the officer has not acted on a required replacement order, or the portal and PFMS show conflicting records.
CBIC refund rules also allow filing through a notified facilitation centre. This can be useful when the authorised signatory cannot complete DSC or EVC submission, but it does not remove the need to provide accurate bank and PAN information. A practitioner can help organize the amendment and officer follow-up, but no representative can bypass the portal’s validation requirements.
Correction checklist
- Locate the refund ARN and note the exact Bank Validation Status message.
- Determine whether the failure occurred after RFD-01, after RFD-05, or during a technical file exchange.
- Confirm the account number, account type, current IFSC, bank name and branch with the bank.
- Verify that the bank’s PAN record matches the PAN linked to the GSTIN.
- Use Services > Refunds > Track Application Status and select UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT when the control is available.
- If the account is absent or wrong, file the non-core amendment in FORM GST REG-14 with the amendment date, reason and at least one supporting document.
- Submit the amendment using DSC or EVC and save the acknowledgement.
- After the corrected account appears, assign it to the refund ARN; do not assume registration update alone changes the refund.
- Check GST Portal status and the appropriate PFMS view separately.
- If incorrect details caused a post-RFD-05 failure, request the proper officer to issue the replacement payment order.
- Retain screenshots, error text, amendment references and dates for every follow-up.
Official wording on changing auto-populated details
The January 2026 GST refund handbook states: Any change in these auto-populated bank account details shall not be allowed unless there is a validation error in relation to the same.
In practice, that means the correction function is tied to a validation failure; it is not a general option to switch the destination account after a refund has been successfully validated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the GST refund bank account after filing RFD-01?
Yes, when the refund shows a related bank-validation failure. Use Services > Refunds > Track Application Status, open the ARN and select UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT. If the account is not listed, add or correct it through the non-core amendment in FORM GST REG-14 first.

What if my account is correct but PFMS still shows an error?
Read the exact error. PFMS distinguishes incorrect account details from a technical file-exchange problem. For a technical problem, GST System is expected to correct the record and send it back for revalidation; do not replace a correct account solely because of that message.
Does adding a bank account to GST registration automatically update my refund?
No. The account must first become available through the non-core amendment and then be selected for the refund ARN with UPDATE BANK ACCOUNT.
What happens when validation fails after RFD-05?
If incorrect details caused the failure, the proper officer invalidates the payment order and issues a replacement after correction. The replacement has a new reference number, while the original ARN, sanction order number and refund amount remain unchanged.
Which PFMS screen should I use to check the refund?
Before RFD-05, use the PFMS GST Registered view and search by GSTIN or account number. After RFD-05, use GST Successfully Processed; if no result appears, check GST Under Process for validation errors.
Why can an account with the right number still fail?
GSTN identifies invalid bank name, IFSC mismatch, an IFSC inactive in PFMS, or an IFSC not found in PFMS as possible causes. The account may also be suspended or not in use, or the PAN maintained by the bank may not match the PAN linked to the GSTIN.
Is there a guaranteed correction time?
No correction-specific average or guaranteed revalidation time is established. The general statutory rule summarized in the January 2026 handbook provides 6% interest when an ordered refund is not credited within 60 days of receipt of the application, but that is not a correction service-level promise.
The Bottom Line
Match the remedy to the failure stage: update the account against the ARN after correcting registration details, track validation separately in PFMS, and ask the proper officer to replace RFD-05 when incorrect details caused a post-order failure.
