If you reported voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) compensation as “advance salary,” do not correct the return merely by changing the label. First compare the VRS scheme, employer settlement statement, Form 16 and the exact exemption or relief claimed in your filed return. If you claimed the section 10(10C) exemption for that compensation, the Income Tax Department says section 89 relief should not also be claimed on the same amount. If the mistake is in your own return and revision is still open, the normal route is a revised return. Rectification is intended for an apparent error in a CPC order or intimation, not as a general replacement for revision.
The right action depends on your assessment year, whether the return has been processed, what the employer reported, and whether the payment actually satisfies the conditions for section 10(10C) or section 89. No correction amount or deadline can be determined safely without those facts.

What “advance salary” means in this situation
“Advance salary” is a tax description for salary received before it becomes due under the employment arrangement. VRS compensation is a separate payment category arising from an employer’s voluntary retirement or separation scheme. A settlement statement may contain several components, such as compensation for loss of employment, notice pay, leave encashment, gratuity or other amounts. The employer’s description does not by itself decide the legal treatment.

Why section 10(10C) and section 89 must be checked together
Section 10(10C): exemption for qualifying VRS receipts
The Income Tax Department’s salary guide and tax-treatment summary describe a section 10(10C) exemption for qualifying compensation received on voluntary retirement or separation, subject to statutory conditions. The department’s summary lists an upper limit of ₹5,00,000. That figure is an exemption cap, not an automatic entitlement: eligibility depends on the scheme and the employee’s circumstances.
Start by identifying whether the employer treated the payment as compensation covered by section 10(10C), whether the scheme was structured to meet the applicable conditions, and whether your return actually claimed the exemption. The figure in Form 16, the settlement statement and the ITR may not be identical, so reconcile each one rather than relying on a single label.
Read the department’s current salary guidance and the tax-treatment summary when checking the conditions and cap: Income from Salary Under Income Tax Act Guide and Treatment of income from different sources.

Section 89: relief for eligible arrears or advance salary
Section 89 provides relief where qualifying salary, pension or similar income is received in arrears or in advance and the timing would otherwise push income into a higher tax burden. The relief is calculated by comparing the tax impact in the years to which the income relates with the tax impact in the year of receipt. It is not a blanket deduction from taxable salary.
The section 89 provision contains a specific restriction for compensation received on voluntary retirement or termination where the section 10(10C) exemption has been claimed. The department’s salary guide gives the same practical instruction: do not claim section 89 relief for VRS compensation for which section 10(10C) exemption has been claimed. Re-labelling that compensation as advance salary does not override this rule.
See the department’s statutory page for the wording of section 89: Section 89: Relief when salary, etc., is paid in arrears or in advance.

Documents to collect before changing anything
Download or assemble the records for the same assessment year. You need enough detail to distinguish the payment itself from the tax treatment selected in the return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The employer’s VRS scheme, circular or offer letter, including eligibility and payment conditions.
- The final settlement statement showing each component and the payment date.
- Form 16 and any revised Form 16 issued by the employer.
- The filed ITR, including the salary schedule, exempt-income schedule and any section 89 or relief entries.
- The acknowledgement number and filing date of the original return and any revised return.
- Form 10E acknowledgement, if you filed one.
- Any section 143(1) intimation, CPC order or later assessment communication.
- Bank credit evidence or payslips if the settlement statement does not clearly establish when the amount was paid.
Note the assessment year, not just the calendar year in which the money arrived. Also record whether the return is unprocessed, processed with an intimation, under scrutiny or otherwise subject to an assessment order. Those facts determine which correction channel can be used.
Determine the correct substantive treatment
1. Separate the payment into documented components
Do not assume that every rupee in a final settlement is one tax category. An employer may separately identify VRS compensation, salary paid for a notice period, leave encashment, gratuity, bonus or other dues. A section 10(10C) analysis may apply to the qualifying VRS compensation while another provision applies to a different component. Use the employer’s breakup and the governing documents; do not move the entire settlement into “advance salary” simply because one part was paid with the final settlement.
2. Compare the employer reporting with your ITR
Prepare a simple reconciliation with four columns: employer description, amount, Form 16 treatment and ITR treatment. Mark whether each amount was included in gross salary, excluded as exempt, or used in a relief calculation. This exposes common errors such as omitting taxable salary, claiming an exemption twice, or applying section 89 to an amount already excluded under section 10(10C).
3. Identify what you actually claimed
The restriction turns on the claim made for the compensation. A return that merely reports a payment as salary is different from a return that excludes it under section 10(10C), and both are different from a return that claims section 89 relief after filing Form 10E. Read the schedules and computation, not only the ITR acknowledgement summary.

4. Check eligibility before seeking section 89 relief
If the amount is genuinely eligible advance or arrear salary and is not VRS compensation for which section 10(10C) exemption was claimed, section 89 may be available. If the amount is qualifying VRS compensation and you claimed section 10(10C), section 89 relief cannot be stacked on that same amount. Where the documents are ambiguous, obtain a fact-specific opinion before changing the return.

Revised return or rectification? Use the error-and-status test
| Question | Revised return | Rectification request |
|---|---|---|
| What is wrong? | Your filed ITR contains an incorrect entry, omission or claim. | An apparent mistake exists in a CPC order or intimation when compared with the record. |
| Has the return been processed? | A revision may be available while the statutory revision window remains open; the applicable year’s rules control. | Usually used after CPC processing or an eligible order/intimation. |
| Can it replace the other route? | It is the normal correction for your own return mistake. | No. The department warns not to use rectification for a mistake on your part that can be corrected through a revised return. |
| What can be changed? | Subject to the assessment-year law and filing window, you can correct the return data and recompute tax. | Only the categories permitted by the portal, such as reprocessing, tax-credit mismatch correction or eligible return-data correction; some fresh or additional claims are excluded. |
| Typical evidence | Corrected schedules, computation and supporting employer documents. | The CPC intimation or order and the record showing an apparent processing error. |
The department’s rectification FAQ states: “Do not use rectification request for any other mistake on your part which can be corrected with a revised return.” Read the current FAQ at Raise Rectification Request FAQs.
How to correct your return when the entry is your mistake
Step 1: establish that revision is still permitted
Check the assessment-year instructions and the current e-Filing status. A revised return is available only within the applicable statutory window and subject to any assessment having been completed. Do not rely on a deadline remembered from another year. If the portal does not permit revision, note the reason displayed and obtain advice on the remaining statutory options.
Step 2: rebuild the salary computation
Use the employer’s final breakup and Form 16 to enter each salary component in the correct schedule. Remove any amount that was incorrectly described as advance salary if the documents show it is VRS compensation. Conversely, do not remove a component that is genuinely taxable salary merely because it was paid at retirement.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 3: apply only one valid treatment to the VRS compensation
If the section 10(10C) conditions are met and you claimed that exemption, retain the exemption only to the extent supported by the documents and remove any section 89 relief claimed on the same compensation. If the exemption was claimed incorrectly, the correction may require bringing the amount back into taxable income and recomputing tax. Whether that is the result cannot be decided from the phrase “advance salary” alone.
Step 4: recompute tax, interest and refund or demand
After correcting the schedules, review the tax computation, tax deducted at source, advance tax, self-assessment tax, interest and refund or demand. A revised return can create additional tax payable even when the original return showed a refund. Pay any amount that becomes due using the applicable payment facility and retain the challan details.
Step 5: submit the revised return and keep proof
File the revised return through the assessment-year return workflow on the official e-Filing portal, complete verification within the permitted period and save the acknowledgement. Keep the original return, revised return, computation, employer documents and payment evidence together. If the employer later issues a revised Form 16, reconcile it with the filed revision.

When Form 10E is required
Form 10E is a procedural requirement for claiming section 89 relief on eligible arrears or advance income. The department’s manual says it is filed online through the e-Filing portal and should be submitted before the ITR in which the relief is claimed. The department’s FAQ also says that if Form 10E is not filed, the ITR may be processed but the section 89 relief will not be allowed.
Form 10E does not create eligibility. Filing it cannot make VRS compensation eligible for section 89 where section 10(10C) exemption has been claimed for that compensation. First decide the substantive treatment; file Form 10E only if the resulting claim is legally available.
Use the current portal instructions in the Form 10E User Manual. Save the submitted form’s acknowledgement and the year-wise calculation supporting the relief.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When rectification may be appropriate
CPC omitted or misread information already on record
Rectification can be considered when the CPC’s processing does not reflect information that was correctly reported and is apparent from the return and supporting record. Examples include an eligible tax-credit mismatch or a processing error that fits one of the portal’s rectification categories.
Your return needs a new claim or a changed legal position
That is generally not a rectification matter. If you forgot a claim, entered the wrong amount or selected the wrong exemption, the department’s FAQ directs you toward a revised return when revision remains available. The return-data rectification category also does not permit certain fresh or additional claims, including fresh deductions.
The portal shows more than one rectification type
Read the description for each type and select only the category matching the CPC communication. A request that does not correspond to the order may be rejected or may not produce the intended change. Keep the intimation number and date beside you while preparing the request.

Assessment-year rules matter, especially for AY 2026-27
The Income Tax Department’s 2026 transition FAQ says that returns and revisions for assessment year 2026-27 continue under the Income-tax Act, 1961, even though the Income-tax Act, 2025 takes effect for the new framework. For AY 2026-27, the FAQ says section 89 relief uses Form 10E. Form 39 belongs to the new Act’s Tax Year 2026-27 framework and should not be substituted automatically for the form applicable to the return you are correcting.
The same transition material describes revision as available before expiry of the assessment year or completion of assessment, whichever is earlier, and marks 31 March 2027 with an asterisk as a proposed date. Treat that date as conditional, not as an unconditional deadline. Confirm the currently effective rule, your assessment status and the portal’s filing availability before acting. The transition FAQ is available at FAQs on Interplay and Transition.
Common fact patterns
The return is not processed and both exemption and section 89 were claimed
Check whether the VRS amount was claimed exempt under section 10(10C). If so, remove the section 89 claim on that same compensation in a revised return, provided revision remains open. Recalculate the return using only the treatment supported by the scheme and settlement documents.
CPC processed the return and denied section 89 relief
Read the intimation to see whether the denial arose because Form 10E was missing, because the claim conflicted with section 10(10C), or because of another processing mismatch. A missing Form 10E may be a procedural issue, but adding Form 10E does not cure the statutory restriction on double relief. If the CPC made an apparent mistake despite a correct filing, evaluate the appropriate rectification category.
The employer called the amount advance salary but did not identify a VRS exemption
Ask the employer for the scheme terms and a component-wise settlement statement. The employer’s label is evidence to examine, not a conclusive legal classification. Do not claim section 89 merely because the words “advance salary” appear on a certificate.
The revision window appears closed
Do not submit a rectification request simply to reopen a missed revision. Check whether a statutory remedy remains for the particular assessment status and year, and seek prompt professional advice if the amount is material. The available remedy can differ between an unprocessed return, a section 143(1) intimation and a completed assessment.
Mistakes that create additional risk
- Claiming the ₹5,00,000 section 10(10C) cap without checking whether the scheme and employee satisfy the conditions.
- Applying section 89 to the entire retirement settlement without separating VRS compensation from other salary components.
- Filing Form 10E and assuming that the form itself proves eligibility.
- Using rectification to introduce a new deduction, relief or legal claim that was absent from the return.
- Using a deadline from another assessment year, or treating the proposed 31 March 2027 date as confirmed for every taxpayer.
- Ignoring a revised Form 16 issued after the original return was filed.
- Changing the return without preserving the original computation and the employer’s supporting documents.
When to obtain professional help
Consider advice from a qualified Indian tax professional when the VRS scheme has multiple payment components, the employer and your ITR classify the amount differently, the return has already been processed, the revision window is uncertain, or the tax impact is significant. Provide the professional with the scheme, settlement statement, Form 16, original ITR, Form 10E acknowledgement and CPC communication. A professional can assess the facts and the remedy; no adviser can determine the correct result from the “advance salary” label alone.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist before you submit
- Write down the assessment year and every filing or processing date.
- Obtain the VRS scheme and component-wise employer settlement statement.
- Reconcile Form 16, the salary schedule and exempt-income schedule in the ITR.
- Identify whether section 10(10C) exemption was claimed and for which amount.
- Identify whether section 89 relief was claimed and whether Form 10E was filed before the ITR.
- Decide whether the issue is your return entry or a CPC processing error.
- Use a revised return if your own error can still be revised under the applicable year’s law.
- Use rectification only for an eligible apparent error in a CPC order or intimation.
- Recompute tax, interest, refund or demand and pay any resulting liability.
- Complete verification and retain every acknowledgement, computation and supporting document.
