If an e-way bill has already been generated with incorrect information, you cannot edit the submitted bill. The official E-Way Bill System FAQ directs you to cancel it and generate a new bill with the correct details. Cancellation must be completed electronically within 24 hours of generation, and the bill must not have been verified in transit by a proper officer. The goods must also not be transported, or must not be transported according to the details shown on the bill.
There is an important distinction between a submitted bill, an unsubmitted form and Part-B transport information. You can edit the form before submission, and the portal permits certain Part-B updates after generation. Those limited functions do not make the rest of a submitted e-way bill editable.

The correction rule in one view
For an Indian GST e-way bill, the available action depends on exactly where the mistake is and whether the bill has already been submitted.

The 24-hour figure is a statutory cancellation deadline, not a service-level promise or a study statistic. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) rule uses the phrase “within 24 hours of generation of the eway bill.”

First identify whether the bill was submitted
An unsubmitted form can be corrected
Before the e-way bill is submitted, the portal allows you to revise the information in the form. The FAQ notes a special limitation: once commodity details are entered, some fields may become locked because a change could affect the applicable tax rate. If that happens, delete the product lines, change the required fields, and enter the product details again.
This is ordinary pre-submission editing. It is not the same as modifying a bill that already has an e-way bill number. Confirm that the form has not been submitted before relying on this route.
A submitted bill is not an editable draft
Once the e-way bill has been generated, the official FAQ says it cannot be edited or modified. Changing a printed copy, retyping an invoice number elsewhere or making a note for the driver does not alter the data held in the system. For an error in the submitted bill’s general details, the prescribed route is cancellation followed by a new e-way bill.

General details require cancellation and regeneration
General information includes the core consignment and document information entered in the bill. If such information is wrong after submission, use the cancellation route if the legal conditions and deadline are still met. Do not try to repair a general-field error by changing only the vehicle section.
Part-B has a limited update function
The FAQ specifically allows Part-B to be updated. It describes updating vehicle details and says vehicle details may be updated during the e-way bill’s validity period. This is a transport-detail facility, not a general correction facility.
For example, if the consignment is correctly described but the vehicle has changed before dispatch, the relevant Part-B update may be appropriate. If the invoice number, value, goods description, quantity or another non-Part-B field is wrong, the FAQ’s correction instruction remains cancellation and generation of a fresh bill.
When cancellation is legally available
The CBIC rule permits electronic cancellation on the common portal when goods are either not being transported or are not being transported according to the details furnished in the e-way bill. The cancellation must be made within 24 hours of generation. The same rule bars cancellation once the e-way bill has been verified in transit by a proper officer.

Before dispatch, the goods may still fall within the “not being transported” situation, but that does not remove the other requirements. You must still act within the 24-hour period, and the bill must not already have been verified in transit. Non-dispatch is not a special extension of the deadline.
Three checks before you press Cancel
- Check the generation time. Record the date and time shown for the incorrect bill. Calculate the 24-hour window from generation, not from the time you discovered the error or from the planned dispatch time.
- Check whether transport has begun and whether verification occurred. A bill verified in transit by a proper officer cannot be cancelled under the stated rule. If there has been an inspection or verification, do not assume the portal will treat the bill as unverified merely because the vehicle has not reached its destination.
- Confirm the reason fits the rule. The rule concerns goods that are not being transported or are not being transported as described in the bill. Keep the underlying invoice, transport plan and error details available in case your organisation needs to explain the cancellation.
Step-by-step: replace an incorrect e-way bill before dispatch
1. Stop the release of the consignment
Tell the dispatch, accounts and transporter teams that the submitted bill is under review. Do not send the vehicle using the incorrect bill while assuming that a replacement can be generated later. The practical objective is to prevent movement under a document that does not match the consignment.
2. Compare the bill with the source documents
Place the generated e-way bill beside the tax invoice or other transport document and the actual dispatch plan. Compare the document number and date, consignor and consignee details, goods description, quantities, taxable value, tax information, transport mode and Part-B data. This comparison is a practical control for dispatch; it is not presented as a separate statutory checklist in the official guidance.
3. Decide whether the mistake is a Part-B issue
If the only problem is a vehicle or other transport detail that the portal permits you to update, use the Part-B update function while the bill remains valid. If any general bill field is wrong, continue with cancellation and regeneration instead of trying to use Part-B as a workaround.

4. Verify the 24-hour and verification conditions
Use the bill’s generation timestamp to confirm that the cancellation window remains open. Also confirm that the bill has not been verified in transit by a proper officer. If either condition is uncertain, pause dispatch and obtain case-specific advice rather than relying on an assumption.
5. Open the portal’s cancellation function
The official user manual documents a cancellation workflow on the e-way bill portal. Sign in to the current portal, open the cancellation function, identify the incorrect e-way bill and follow the prompts displayed for the account. The system will request the applicable cancellation reason; enter the reason accurately and submit the cancellation.
Portal labels can change, so follow the current on-screen wording rather than an old screenshot or an unofficial menu path. The rule also permits cancellation electronically through a Facilitation Centre notified by the Commissioner if that channel is used in your circumstances.

6. Confirm that the old bill is cancelled
Keep the cancellation confirmation or other system record with the invoice file. Do not treat a failed submission, an unsaved screen or a browser message as proof that cancellation succeeded. Verify the status in the portal before generating the replacement.

Generate a fresh bill using the corrected information, as directed by the official FAQ. Re-enter or select the details carefully; the new bill is a separate document and does not inherit corrections automatically from the cancelled bill.
8. Perform a final release check
Match the new e-way bill to the invoice, the consignment and the planned vehicle. Give the transporter the current bill number and retain the cancelled-bill record so the document trail explains why the first bill was replaced. Release the goods only after the replacement details are correct.
What to do before the form is submitted
The safest correction is the one made before the system generates a bill number. Review the complete form while it is still editable. If entering product lines locks other fields, follow the FAQ’s sequence:
- Delete the entered products.
- Edit the required fields.
- Enter the product details again.
- Review the completed form and submit it only after the information matches the source documents.
Do not confuse this sequence with the post-generation cancellation process. Once a bill has been submitted, deleting product lines in a new draft does not edit the existing bill.
Vehicle changes and other Part-B situations
Transport arrangements can change after the core bill has been created. The FAQ recognises this by allowing Part-B updates, including vehicle-detail updates during the bill’s validity period. Use that function only for the transport information it covers.
When a Part-B update is the appropriate response
- The invoice and consignment details are correct.
- The change concerns vehicle or another transport detail covered by Part-B.
- The e-way bill is still within its validity period.
- The portal accepts the update for that bill and transport situation.
When Part-B is not enough
- The goods description or quantity is wrong.
- The invoice or document number is wrong.
- The value, tax or other general bill information is wrong.
- The error changes what is being transported rather than merely how it is transported.
For these general-field errors, the official correction instruction is still cancellation and a fresh bill, subject to the 24-hour and verification conditions.

Common failure points and how to avoid them
Waiting until the planned dispatch time
Businesses sometimes discover an error in the morning but wait until loading is complete to act. The deadline runs from generation, so waiting can consume the available cancellation period. Review the bill immediately after generation, not only when the vehicle is ready.
Trying to edit a generated bill
The portal’s ability to update Part-B can create the impression that every field is editable. It is not. A generated bill’s general details remain unchanged; use the cancellation-and-new-bill route for those errors.

Assuming non-dispatch removes the deadline
The rule allows cancellation within 24 hours, even where goods are not being transported, but it does not create an open-ended period simply because the vehicle has not left. Record the generation time and act within the stated window.
Ignoring transit verification
Cancellation is barred when the bill has been verified in transit by a proper officer. If a verification has occurred, do not proceed as though the bill were still an untouched pre-dispatch document.
Giving the driver the old bill
After generating a replacement, withdraw the cancelled bill from dispatch instructions and electronic hand-offs. A correct bill in the portal is not enough if the transport team is still carrying or presenting the superseded number.
Failing to reconcile the replacement
A new bill must be checked independently. Reusing a copied value from the erroneous bill can reproduce the same mistake. Have a second person compare the replacement with the invoice and planned movement before release.

- Confirm that the invoice or other transport document is the final approved version.
- Check the e-way bill number, generation timestamp and current status.
- Compare consignor and consignee details character by character with the source document.
- Check document number and date, goods description, quantity, value and tax-related entries.
- Confirm the transport mode and Part-B information against the vehicle and transporter plan.
- Identify whether any discrepancy is a general-field error or a Part-B transport change.
- If cancellation is required, calculate the 24-hour deadline immediately and assign one person to complete the portal action.
- After regeneration or a Part-B update, perform a second-person review before loading.
- Send only the current bill details to the transporter and retain the cancellation or update record with the transaction file.
Worked examples
Example 1: Wrong invoice number found 90 minutes after generation
The bill has been generated, the goods have not left the premises and no proper officer has verified the bill in transit. Because the invoice number is a general bill detail, Part-B cannot repair it. The responsible user should cancel the incorrect bill within the 24-hour window, confirm cancellation, generate a new bill with the correct invoice number and complete the final document check before dispatch.
Example 2: Correct invoice, replacement vehicle
The consignment and invoice details are correct, but the planned vehicle becomes unavailable. This is the type of transport change for which the FAQ describes Part-B updates. Update the vehicle information during the bill’s validity period if the portal permits the update, then provide the transporter with the updated details.
Example 3: Wrong goods description discovered after generation
A goods-description error is not a vehicle-detail issue. The submitted bill cannot be edited. If the bill is still within 24 hours, the goods have not been transported as described and the bill has not been verified in transit, use cancellation and generate a fresh bill with the correct description.
Example 4: Error found after the 24-hour window
The cited cancellation rule is limited to 24 hours from generation. The fact that the goods remain at the warehouse does not itself extend that period. Do not represent the old bill as editable or cancel it outside the stated window without case-specific guidance from the relevant tax authority or adviser.
Official wording and legal basis
The E-Way Bill System FAQ states:
“If there is a mistake, incorrect or wrong entry in the e-way bill, then it cannot be edited or corrected. Only option is cancellation of eway bill and generate a new one with correct details.”
The CBIC rule describes the underlying condition in these terms:
“Where an e-way bill has been generated under this rule, but goods are either not being transported or are not being transported as per the details furnished in the e-way bill, the eway bill may be cancelled electronically on the common portal, either directly or through a Facilitation Centre notified by the Commissioner, within 24 hours of generation of the e-way bill:”

These are Indian GST and e-way bill instructions. Portal wording and applicable rules can change, so use the current official portal prompts and current CBIC instructions when carrying out the procedure.
Final decision rule
Before submission, edit the form. After submission, do not call the bill editable: update Part-B only for the limited transport information the portal permits, and otherwise cancel the incorrect bill within 24 hours and generate a replacement. The replacement route is unavailable under the stated rule once a proper officer has verified the bill in transit, and the deadline does not become longer merely because the goods have not yet been dispatched.
