Choose the record that needs correction
A PAN–Aadhaar mismatch is not automatically a PAN problem. Compare the exact spelling, date and address in both records, then correct the database containing the error. The Income Tax Department’s mismatch guidance points to UTIITSL or Protean for PAN changes and UIDAI for Aadhaar demographic changes.

When PAN is wrong
Use the Instant e-PAN update route when Aadhaar contains the correct details and you can receive a one-time password (OTP) on the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. A provider-based PAN correction is the alternative when you are not eligible for the Aadhaar route or need a field or process it does not cover.
#1 Best Overall
When Aadhaar is wrong
Correct the Aadhaar demographic information through UIDAI before trying to make PAN match it. Copying incorrect Aadhaar data into PAN would create two records with the same error and can leave the mismatch unresolved for later verification.
When both records are wrong
Correct the record for which you can establish the accurate legal information first, then update the other record. Do not select an Aadhaar-based PAN update until the Aadhaar details shown during e-KYC are correct.
Who can use the Instant e-PAN update
The Income Tax Department manual describes a pre-login service for an existing PAN, not the separate process for obtaining a new PAN. The documented route requires:
- A valid PAN that already exists in the department’s records.
- A valid Aadhaar number.
- A mobile number registered with Aadhaar so you can receive and validate the OTP.
- Correct details in Aadhaar for the fields you want to copy to PAN.
The service is designed for an individual whose PAN details should be brought into line with Aadhaar e-KYC. If you cannot authenticate Aadhaar, the names or dates do not represent the same person, or your case requires evidence outside the supported e-KYC fields, use a provider correction workflow instead.
Important date-of-birth limitation
If the PAN record contains only the year of birth, the manual says you must first add the complete date of birth to Aadhaar. Once Aadhaar contains the day, month and year, you can return to the PAN update service and request the date-of-birth update.
Step-by-step: update PAN to match Aadhaar
Keep your Aadhaar-linked phone available for the entire session. The labels below follow the Income Tax Department manual and may be presented in a slightly different visual layout as the portal changes.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Open the Income Tax e-Filing portal. Use the pre-login services area and select Instant e-PAN.
- Choose “Update PAN.” Do not choose the option for generating a new Instant e-PAN; you are changing an existing PAN record.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Check every digit before submitting the request.
- Validate the Aadhaar OTP. The OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Enter it within the validity period shown by the portal.
- Review the e-KYC comparison. The service displays Aadhaar information alongside the PAN information so you can see what will change.
- Select the supported fields to update. The manual lists name, date of birth, address, photograph, mobile number and email ID. Select only the fields whose Aadhaar values are correct.
- Confirm the request. Read the declaration and submit after checking spelling, dates, apartment or house details, locality, district, state and PIN code.
- Complete email validation if prompted. The manual says an email address must be validated. Mobile-number updating is selected by default in this workflow.
- Save the acknowledgement number. The portal displays an acknowledgement after successful submission. Keep it for status checks and for any support query.
What to check before final confirmation
- Compare every letter of your name, including initials, spacing and order.
- Confirm the date of birth as day-month-year, rather than relying on a year-only display.
- Check the complete address, including building or house number, street, locality, city, state and PIN.
- Make sure the Aadhaar-linked mobile can receive messages; a different phone number will not receive this OTP.
- Do not submit an email address you cannot access for validation.
Correcting each type of PAN error
Wrong name
Use the Aadhaar update only when Aadhaar has the name you want on PAN and the e-KYC comparison identifies the same individual. Resolve any spelling, order or identity discrepancy in Aadhaar first if Aadhaar is not the authoritative record for your situation.
If the desired name is not available through Aadhaar e-KYC, use the PAN change or correction service of UTIITSL or Protean. Follow the active provider’s instructions for the evidence it requests; the reviewed official material does not establish one universal document list for every name-change circumstance.
Wrong date of birth
The Instant e-PAN manual includes date of birth among the supported fields. A complete date must be present in Aadhaar when you use this route. A PAN entry that contains only a birth year cannot be expanded through the service until Aadhaar has first been updated with the full date.
Check the date in both records before submitting. A one-day or one-month transposition can cause later identity checks to fail even when the year is correct.
Wrong address
Address is one of the fields listed in the department’s e-KYC update manual. Select it only after confirming that the Aadhaar address is current and complete. UTIITSL separately advertises an Aadhaar-based address-update facility; its own service description says that facility is free.

The same manual lists photograph, mobile number and email ID as updateable fields. Mobile updating is selected by default in the documented flow. Email requires validation, so use an inbox you can open during the request. These contact-field options do not replace correcting a wrong legal name or date of birth in the underlying record.

When the Aadhaar route is not suitable
Use a provider-based correction when any of the following applies:
- You cannot receive an OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Aadhaar contains the wrong name, date of birth or address.
- Your PAN should contain information that is not present in Aadhaar e-KYC.
- The portal does not offer the field or correction you need.
- Your identity details require supporting evidence or a more complex change than a direct e-KYC update.
UTIITSL and Protean correction services
The Income Tax Department’s mismatch FAQ names UTIITSL and Protean as channels for PAN name updates and related corrections. UTIITSL lists a “Change/Correction in PAN Card” service, along with e-PAN download and card reprint options. A card reprint reproduces the current PAN information; it is not, by itself, a correction to the PAN database.
Use only the official provider workflow and read its current instructions before paying or uploading documents. UTIITSL states that it and Protean are the entities appointed for PAN applications and related services, so an unofficial intermediary is unnecessary.

Forms effective from 1 April 2026
UTIITSL’s current notice says new PAN application and change-request forms apply from 1 April 2026. It says older forms are not accepted after 31 March 2026. If you submit through a provider after that cutoff, obtain the current form from the provider’s live service page rather than reusing an older downloaded copy.
Fees, documents and processing expectations
What is confirmed about charges
UTIITSL describes its Aadhaar-based address-update facility as free. That statement applies to that specific facility, not automatically to every PAN correction method.
The Income Tax Department FAQ cites ₹1,000 for delayed Aadhaar–PAN linking. This is a linkage charge. It should not be described as the price of correcting a wrong PAN name, date of birth or address.
Rank #4
The available official material does not establish a universal fee for every provider-based correction. Fees can depend on the service, delivery choice and the provider’s current schedule, so check the amount shown in the live application before payment.

Supporting documents
UTIITSL provides links to proof-of-identity, proof-of-address and proof-of-date-of-birth checklists. The reviewed service page does not expose a single correction-specific list that applies to every applicant and every type of change. Gather documents that establish the correct information, then follow the exact checklist presented for your case by UTIITSL or Protean.
Do not assume that a document accepted for one correction is sufficient for another. A name change, a date-of-birth correction and an address change can trigger different evidence requirements in the provider workflow.
Processing time
The cited official material does not provide one guaranteed processing period for all PAN corrections. Treat any time estimate shown in a provider application as specific to that service and submission method, and retain the acknowledgement until the record is updated.
Decision table: which route fits your case?
| Situation | Best starting route | Authentication or evidence | Fee or timing established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar has the correct name, date of birth or address; Aadhaar-linked mobile works | Income Tax e-Filing portal, Instant e-PAN → Update PAN | Aadhaar number and OTP; review e-KYC fields | No universal correction fee or processing time stated for this route |
| PAN has only a birth year and Aadhaar lacks the full date | Update date of birth in Aadhaar first, then use Update PAN | UIDAI process for Aadhaar, followed by Aadhaar OTP for PAN | Not stated |
| Aadhaar contains the wrong demographic information | Correct Aadhaar through UIDAI, then reassess PAN | UIDAI’s current requirements | Not stated |
| OTP unavailable, field unsupported or e-KYC route unsuitable | UTIITSL or Protean PAN change/correction service | Provider’s current form and document checklist | Provider fee and processing time not universally stated |
| Only an Aadhaar-based address update through UTIITSL is needed | UTIITSL’s dedicated address-update facility | Aadhaar e-KYC | UTIITSL advertises this facility as free |
| PAN–Aadhaar linkage is delayed or fails after correction | Resolve the underlying data mismatch, then follow the department’s linkage process | Department’s linkage options; biometric authentication may be available in persistent failure cases | ₹1,000 cited for delayed linkage; this is not a correction fee |
What to do after submitting
Track the acknowledgement
Keep the acknowledgement number from the Instant e-PAN submission or the provider receipt. The Income Tax Department manual describes using the portal to check status. A provider application should likewise be tracked through the reference details it issues.
Verify the corrected record
After the status indicates completion, check the PAN details again rather than assuming that a card reprint or confirmation message reflects every requested field. Verify the name, complete date of birth, address and any contact fields you selected.
Best Value

- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Check the Aadhaar–PAN relationship
If the original problem was a mismatch, test the linkage or verification status after the correction is reflected. A correction request and a linkage request are related but separate administrative actions; a successful data update does not mean a delayed-linkage charge has been paid or that a failed linkage has automatically been retried.
Troubleshooting common failures
No OTP arrives
- Confirm that the number receiving messages is the mobile registered with Aadhaar, not merely the phone number in your e-Filing profile.
- Wait for the portal’s resend interval, then request a new OTP.
- If the Aadhaar-linked number is inaccessible, complete the appropriate UIDAI mobile-update process or use a provider-based PAN correction route.
The e-KYC details are wrong
Stop before confirmation. Correct Aadhaar if it is the wrong record, then start the PAN update again. Submitting an incorrect e-KYC value can replace an accurate PAN value.
The portal shows only a birth year
Follow the manual’s sequence: add the complete date of birth to Aadhaar first. The PAN update cannot supply the missing day and month from a year-only Aadhaar record.
The request is rejected because details do not match
Compare the exact name format, date of birth and other identity fields in both records. Decide which database is wrong, correct that database through its appointed channel, and only then retry the other update. If the mismatch remains or the e-KYC service cannot handle the case, submit the provider correction request with the documents requested for your circumstances.
A card arrives with the old information
Check whether you ordered a reprint without submitting a database correction. Reprint services reproduce existing PAN data; they do not amend the record. Use the correction status and updated details, then request a reprint only if you need a new physical card.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing “new PAN” instead of “Update PAN.” The Instant e-PAN area contains both concepts; an existing PAN record needs the update option.
- Correcting the wrong database. Always establish whether PAN or Aadhaar contains the error first.
- Using an e-Filing profile change as a PAN correction. Updating contact information in a profile is not the same as changing the PAN database record.
- Calling the ₹1,000 linkage amount a correction fee. The department associates that figure with delayed Aadhaar–PAN linking.
- Reusing an obsolete provider form. UTIITSL says forms issued before 1 April 2026 are not accepted after 31 March 2026.
- Paying an unverified agent. Use the appointed PAN service providers’ official workflows and retain your receipt.
- Submitting before checking every field. A successful OTP proves access to Aadhaar-linked mobile; it does not prove that the displayed name, date or address is correct.
A practical checklist
- Compare PAN and Aadhaar side by side.
- Mark the record containing the error.
- If Aadhaar is correct and you have its linked mobile, confirm that the required field is supported by Instant e-PAN Update PAN.
- If PAN contains only a birth year, ensure Aadhaar has the complete date first.
- Prepare the correct spelling, date and full address before starting.
- Submit through Instant e-PAN or the current UTIITSL/Protean correction workflow, as appropriate.
- Save the acknowledgement or provider receipt.
- Check the corrected PAN data after completion.
- Recheck PAN–Aadhaar linkage separately if that was the original reason for the correction.
