Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe correct fix depends first on your country, tax authority, return type and tax year. Do not send a second original return automatically. Check the authority’s notice and instructions: an arithmetic error or missing document may be corrected during processing, while a change to income, deductions, credits, dependents, filing status or tax liability usually requires an amendment or adjustment request.
Before acting, identify whether you filed an individual, business, trust or estate return, and whether the issue affects a related state, provincial or territorial filing. The detailed procedures below cover U.S. federal individual returns and Canadian individual returns. Regional and business rules can differ. Australia is included only as a limited reference because the available official material does not establish a complete procedure.

- What went wrong: an arithmetic mistake, omitted income, missing tax slip, wrong filing status, incorrect deduction, credit, dependent or tax calculation.
- Whether the original return has been processed: some services require a notice or assessment first.
- Whether a notice has arrived: a proposed adjustment may have its own response process.

A quick triage before you submit anything
- Find the filed return, filing confirmation and the tax authority’s latest notice or account message.
- Compare the filed figures with the underlying forms, slips and records. Mark each line that changes and every line that depends on it.
- Decide whether the authority is already correcting the issue, asking for evidence, or requiring you to initiate a formal amendment.
- Check the applicable deadline, payment consequences and online-service eligibility for that year.
- Prepare one complete, consistent correction rather than sending several partial submissions.
This process prevents a common mistake: correcting a visible number while leaving related income, tax, credits or payments inconsistent.
Decide whether you need an amendment at all
Arithmetic and processing errors
Tax authorities often detect calculation errors while processing a return. The IRS states: “Many mathematical errors are caught during the processing of the tax return and corrected by the IRS, so you may not need to correct these mistakes.” Wait for the notice or account update before filing another return unless the authority’s instructions tell you to act. Compare the agency’s corrected figures with your own records; if the correction is wrong or creates a new issue, use the response instructions on the notice.
Missing forms, slips or supporting information
If the IRS asks for a missing form or information, respond to that request instead of filing a duplicate original return. The notice should identify the documents, deadline and submission method. Send copies in the requested format and keep proof of delivery or upload. In Canada, a missing tax slip is commonly handled as a change request, but you still need to follow the CRA’s eligibility rules and timing requirement.

Substantive changes
An amendment or adjustment is generally appropriate when the error changes a reported fact or the resulting tax. Examples include omitted income, a changed filing status, a newly discovered deduction or credit, an incorrect dependent, a changed tax form or a revised tax liability. Recalculate the whole return, not just the line where you first noticed the error, because one change can alter several credits, tax brackets, payments or refund amounts.
A notice proposing a change
Read a notice before preparing an amendment. The IRS may offer a way to agree with a proposed change without filing Form 1040-X. Follow the notice’s response route and deadline; filing an amendment that conflicts with an active notice can delay resolution. If you disagree, provide the requested explanation and evidence by the stated method. Do not assume that silence, a phone call or a new original return substitutes for the formal response.
Correcting a U.S. federal individual return
The following applies to U.S. federal individual income tax returns. State returns, business returns and special federal situations can require different forms or procedures.

When the IRS says to amend
The IRS identifies filing status, income, deductions, credits, dependents and tax liability as categories that can require an amended return. If the error is only a mathematical mistake already corrected by the IRS, an amendment may be unnecessary. The notice or account transcript should show whether the agency has already made the correction. If the IRS has requested a form or explanation, answer that request even if you also need a separate amendment for another issue.
Use Form 1040-X after the original return
For an eligible correction, file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, for the year being corrected. An amended return is not a replacement filed from scratch: it follows the original return and explains what changed.
- Gather the filed return and notices. Use the exact year’s Form 1040-X instructions and retain the original filing confirmation or mailing evidence. Review any IRS notice before choosing a filing method.
- Recalculate the complete return. Determine the correct income, deductions, credits, tax, payments and refund or balance due for that year. Check that totals flow correctly from each changed schedule.
- Complete Form 1040-X. Report the original amounts, the corrected amounts and the net change, with an explanation of the reason for amendment. Make the explanation specific enough for the reviewer to connect each change with its evidence.
- Prepare every changed schedule and form. Include new or changed schedules, forms and supporting documents required by the correction. A changed credit, income item or dependent can require more than one revised attachment.
- Submit through an eligible channel. IRS online filing eligibility depends on the return year and circumstances; check the current IRS page and the form instructions. Use paper filing when electronic filing is not available for that return.
- Keep a complete copy. Save the amended return, schedules, evidence, submission confirmation and any later IRS correspondence together.
Do not attach unrelated documents. Include records that establish the changed item, such as an omitted income statement, corrected form, expense evidence or proof of a qualifying dependent, when the instructions require them. Never send irreplaceable originals; retain them and provide copies unless the authority specifically directs otherwise.
Refund-claim deadline
For a federal refund claim, the general deadline is three years after the original return was filed or two years after the tax was paid, whichever is later. If the original return was filed early, the three-year period is generally counted from the April filing deadline. The IRS lists special rules for certain claims, including some losses and credits, so do not apply the general rule without checking the exception that fits your claim. A late amendment can still be useful for correcting the account, but it may not produce a refund once the claim period has expired.
If the amendment increases tax
If the correction produces additional federal tax, the IRS says to pay by the original April due date to avoid penalties and interest. When filing after that date, do not add your own interest or penalties to Form 1040-X; the IRS will calculate and make the necessary adjustments. Paying as soon as possible can limit additional accrual while the amended return is processed. Keep the payment confirmation and match it to the year being corrected.
Check the state return separately
A federal change may alter state taxable income, deductions or credits. Contact the state tax agency to determine whether a separate amended state return, payment or response is required. Do not assume that submitting Form 1040-X updates any state account. Check state deadlines independently, especially when the federal amendment changes a refund or balance due.

Illustrative example
Suppose you filed a federal return claiming one dependent, then discover that a qualifying dependent was omitted. That change can affect filing status, credits and tax liability. Recalculate the entire return, complete the year-specific Form 1040-X, attach the changed schedules and dependency evidence requested by the instructions, and check whether your state return also changes. If the IRS has already sent a notice about the dependent, use the notice’s response procedure rather than starting an unrelated duplicate filing.
Correcting a Canadian individual return
CRA procedures are different from IRS procedures. The CRA’s rule is explicit: “You must wait until you receive your notice of assessment (NOA) before you can request a change to your return.” Do not submit an adjustment request while the original return is still awaiting its NOA.
Changes commonly accepted
After the NOA arrives, common adjustment requests include reporting omitted income, claiming a deduction, credit or expense, and adding a missing tax slip. Review the NOA and your filed return first so the request identifies the exact line or information that needs correction. If the NOA already reflects the item, do not submit a duplicate request without understanding what remains wrong.

Wait for an existing request to finish
If another change request is already pending, wait for the CRA’s response before sending another request. Multiple overlapping submissions can make it harder to determine which figures are current and can slow the account review. Keep the submission confirmation and the date of each request so you can distinguish an unresolved request from a new issue.
Choose an eligible submission route
Eligible individuals may use Change my return in a CRA account or ReFILE through certified tax software. A paper adjustment request may be available when online routes do not apply. Eligibility depends on the tax year, filing method, taxpayer circumstances and return type, so check the CRA’s current eligibility guidance before selecting a route.
- Wait for the NOA. Confirm that the assessment for the year has been issued.
- Identify the exact change. Note the line, slip, income, deduction, credit or expense that is wrong or missing.
- Check service eligibility. Determine whether Change my return, ReFILE or a paper request is available for your circumstances.
- Submit the corrected information. Follow the service’s instructions and provide supporting records if the CRA requests them.
- Save the confirmation. For online requests, keep the confirmation number and summary of the changes.
- Monitor the account. Retain the CRA response and compare the revised assessment with your requested correction.
Changes that may require another route
The CRA service cannot be used for every type of change. Its examples of excluded matters include revising an election and updating personal information. Use the CRA’s instructions for those situations rather than forcing them into an ordinary adjustment request. If you are unsure whether an election or personal-data correction is involved, obtain the correct CRA procedure before submitting figures.

Processing estimates
Current CRA guidance gives an estimate of about two weeks for online requests and about ten weeks for requests sent by mail. These are agency estimates, not guarantees; complex requests can take longer and processing times can change. Keep proof of submission while waiting. Do not send another request merely because the estimate has passed; check the account or contact the CRA using its current guidance.

The CRA reported that more than 95% of all Canadian tax returns in the referenced 2025 tax season were filed online. It also reported that over two million paper change requests were submitted in 2024, representing 80% of CRA change requests. Those figures describe CRA’s cited Canadian activity, not filing behavior in other countries and not a prediction of how long an individual request will take. They also do not make an online route available to every taxpayer; eligibility still depends on the return and circumstances.
Australia: what can be said from the available official reference
An Australian Taxation Office search result dated February 12, 2025 indicates that an amendment may correct an erroneous answer, omitted income or capital gain, an unclaimed offset or deduction, or later-received revised payment information. The available material does not establish the detailed Australian steps, deadlines, online eligibility rules or forms. Australian taxpayers should use the ATO’s current instructions for their return type and year rather than applying the U.S. or Canadian processes above.

Documents and records to assemble
Build a correction file before submitting anything. Include:
- A copy of the filed return and its filing confirmation.
- The notice, assessment or account message from the tax authority.
- Corrected income statements, slips and revised forms.
- Receipts, statements or other evidence supporting a deduction, credit, expense or dependent.
- Your calculation showing the original amount, corrected amount and resulting tax difference.
- A copy of the amendment or adjustment request and proof of submission.
- Any payment confirmation and all later correspondence.
Use the authority’s requested format and do not send originals of records you cannot replace. Label files clearly by tax year and keep the version actually submitted, not only a later draft. If a professional prepares the correction, review the final figures and attachments before authorizing submission.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Filing a second original return: use the authority’s amendment or adjustment process instead.
- Acting before a required milestone: Canada requires the NOA before a change request.
- Ignoring a notice: a notice may provide a faster or mandatory response route.
- Changing only one line: recalculate the complete return so related credits, tax and payments agree.
- Omitting changed schedules: include every new or revised form required for the corrected figures.
- Missing a refund deadline: check the applicable limitation period and exceptions before filing.
- Forgetting regional consequences: determine whether a state, province or territory needs a separate filing.
- Submitting while another request is pending: wait for the CRA response when its guidance requires it.
- Discarding proof: retain confirmations, notices, calculations and supporting records until the matter is resolved and the normal record-retention period has passed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I send a second tax return if I discover a mistake?
Usually no. First check the authority’s notice and instructions. A processing or arithmetic issue may be corrected by the agency; a substantive change generally uses the formal amendment or adjustment route for that country and year.
What if the IRS finds the error before I do?
Read the IRS notice. If it proposes a change, the notice may provide a way to agree or respond without filing Form 1040-X. Follow its method and deadline, and send requested evidence.
When can I file Form 1040-X?
After the original U.S. federal individual return, when the change affects items such as income, filing status, deductions, credits, dependents or tax liability. Check the current year’s instructions and online-filing eligibility.
What is the general U.S. refund-amendment deadline?
Generally, three years after filing the original return or two years after paying the tax, whichever is later. Early-filed returns generally use the April filing deadline for the three-year period. Special exceptions apply.
Can I request a Canadian change before receiving my Notice of Assessment?
No. CRA guidance says you must wait until the NOA arrives. If another change request is pending, wait for the CRA response before submitting another one.
How long does a Canadian adjustment take?
CRA estimates about two weeks for online requests and about ten weeks by mail, with complex requests taking longer. These are estimates, not guarantees, so keep your confirmation and monitor the account.
Does a federal amendment automatically change my state or provincial return?
No. Contact the relevant state, provincial or territorial tax agency and determine whether a separate correction, payment or response is required.

Should I hire a tax professional?
It is sensible for multi-year corrections, foreign income or assets, business activity, complicated notices, large penalties or uncertainty about elections. Verify credentials and review the completed submission yourself.
The Bottom Line
Identify the country, authority, return type and year before acting. Check notices and required milestones, distinguish an agency-corrected processing issue from a substantive change, then use the correct amendment or adjustment channel with complete schedules and evidence. Check refund deadlines, pay any additional tax promptly, preserve submission records and investigate any separate state, provincial or territorial filing.
