A rejected return can usually be corrected and transmitted again. An accepted return must not be replaced with another original return after the due date; a material change generally requires Form 1040-X, the federal amended-return form.
Some errors do not require an amendment. The IRS may correct certain math errors during processing or ask you separately for a missing form or explanation. Use the decision process below before changing anything.

Start with the return’s status
Keep the e-file acceptance or rejection message from your tax software or preparer. “Submitted” is not the same as accepted. Your next step depends on the IRS result and, for an accepted return, whether the original filing deadline has passed.
| Status | Typical action | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Rejected e-file | Read the rejection code, correct the eligible error, and retransmit the original return. If the cause requires paper filing, follow the IRS rejection procedure. | Do not prepare an amended return for a return the IRS never accepted. |
| Accepted return; IRS notice or request | Answer the specific notice and send the forms or information requested. Some math errors and missing items are handled during processing. | Do not automatically file Form 1040-X before determining what the notice requires. |
| Accepted return; substantive taxpayer change | Prepare a separate Form 1040-X for that tax year, with changed schedules and supporting forms. | Do not send another original Form 1040 for the same year after the due date. |
| Accepted return; original due date has not passed | A corrected filing may be a “superseding return” that replaces the original. Use the tax-year instructions and pay any additional tax by the original due date when possible. | Do not treat this as permission to submit an extra original return after the deadline. |
The IRS describes the core question as, “What should I do if I made a mistake on my federal return that I’ve already filed?” The answer begins with acceptance status, not with Form 1040-X.

If the IRS rejected your e-file
A rejection means the electronic submission did not pass the IRS or state validation rules; it is not an accepted return that needs amending. Open the rejection explanation in your tax software and identify the exact field or form involved.
Correct errors that the IRS allows you to retransmit
Common correctable rejects include an incorrectly entered Social Security number, payer identification number, omitted form, or misspelled name. The IRS says, “If you made a mistake in entering a Social Security number, a payer’s identification number, omitted a form, or misspelled a name, you can correct these errors and electronically file your tax return again.” See the IRS procedures for age, name or SSN rejects.
- Open the rejection notice and record its code and description.
- Compare the rejected field with your Social Security card, W-2, 1099, payer statement, or other source document.
- Make only the correction identified by the notice unless your software identifies a related validation problem.
- Run the software’s error check, recreate the e-file, and transmit the original return again.
- Save the rejection message, corrected copy, and new transmission confirmation.
If the IRS rejects the retransmission, use the new code rather than guessing. A rejection caused by an issue that cannot be corrected electronically may require a signed paper return.

When a rejected return must be mailed
For a rejected original return that must be paper-filed, IRS guidance says the return is timely if it is postmarked by the later of the return due date (including an extension) or 10 calendar days after the IRS rejection notification. Follow the current instructions attached to your rejection. They generally require you to:
- Explain why the return is being filed after the normal deadline.
- Include the rejection notice.
- Briefly describe the corrective steps taken, if applicable.
- Write in red at the top of page one: “Rejected Electronic Return – (Date)”.
- Sign and mail the complete return and keep proof of mailing.
Use the IRS’s current e-file FAQ and the instructions in your rejection notice if they differ from a general description. Do not file Form 1040-X for a return that was never accepted.

If the IRS accepted the return but you received a notice
An accepted return can still be reviewed. Read the notice line by line: it may explain an IRS adjustment, request a missing schedule, or ask for documentation. Many mathematical errors are caught during processing and corrected by the IRS, so you may not need to correct these mistakes. The IRS states this in its amended-returns FAQ.
Respond to the notice, not to a guess
- Use the mailing address, online response option, deadline, and document list printed on the notice.
- Send copies unless the notice specifically asks for originals.
- Explain a disagreement clearly and include calculations or records supporting your position.
- Keep the notice, your response, delivery confirmation, and every attachment.
If the IRS asks for a form that was omitted, supplying it as instructed may resolve the issue without Form 1040-X. If you still need to change another item—such as filing status, income, a deduction, credit, dependent, other tax, or withholding—amend only after addressing the notice and determining the correct amended figures.

Use Form 1040-X when you need to change a material item on an accepted eligible Form 1040-series return or change amounts the IRS previously adjusted. Typical changes include:
- Filing status
- Income or withholding
- Deductions or credits
- Dependents
- Other taxes
- Forms or schedules omitted from the original filing
The December 2025 Form 1040-X instructions require you to show the amounts as originally reported or previously adjusted, the net changes, and the corrected amounts. File a separate Form 1040-X for each tax year. Use the forms, schedules, and instructions for the year being changed—not the current year’s forms simply because you are filing now.
Gather the documents before changing numbers
- A copy of the accepted original return and its e-file acceptance record.
- The IRS notice, if the IRS already adjusted an item.
- Corrected W-2s, 1099s, receipts, records, or other substantiation.
- Every schedule and form that changes or was missing from the original return.
- Payment records for tax already paid and any estimated payments or withholding.
Attach copies of changed or newly included schedules and supporting forms as required by the Form 1040-X instructions. Explain the reason for the change in the form’s explanation section; a clear explanation helps the IRS connect the amended figures to the documents.

How to prepare and file Form 1040-X
- Choose the correct tax year. Download Form 1040-X and the instructions for that year. Prepare one amended return per year.
- Reconstruct the original figures. Enter what you originally reported, or what the IRS previously adjusted, rather than silently replacing the numbers.
- Calculate the change. Show the increase or decrease for each affected line and the corrected total.
- Recreate the tax return schedules. Complete any changed or newly required schedules and attach supporting forms.
- Write a concise explanation. Identify the original item, the corrected item, why it changed, and the attached evidence.
- Check the tax and payment result. Determine whether the amendment creates additional tax, increases a refund, or changes a credit. Pay additional tax as soon as you know the amount.
- File using an eligible channel. E-file through supported tax software when the year and return type qualify, or mail a complete paper package.
- Retain the submission record. Keep the signed copy, attachments, acceptance confirmation or certified-mail evidence, and payment confirmation.
E-filing versus mailing an amended return
IRS electronic-filing guidance says taxpayers can e-file Form 1040-X through tax-filing software for Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS for the current or two prior tax periods. Eligibility depends on the particular year, return type, and software. Confirm support before relying on an electronic route.
| Question | Electronic Form 1040-X | Paper Form 1040-X |
|---|---|---|
| Which original return can be amended? | Supported Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS, subject to year and software eligibility. | Paper filing remains available for eligible amendments; follow the year-specific instructions. |
| Was the original return filed on paper? | Do not assume e-filing is permitted. | The IRS FAQ says an amended return for an original paper-filed return must also be filed on paper. |
| Refund delivery | Direct deposit may be available for an eligible electronically filed amended return. | A paper filer may receive a paper check. |
| Record of filing | Save the software’s submission and acceptance confirmation. | Use a trackable mailing method and retain the postmark or receipt. |
The IRS’s electronic-filing FAQ is the controlling reference for current eligibility. Paper filing is still an option even when the original return was e-filed.
Superseding returns before the filing deadline
If an accepted original return is corrected before its filing due date, the IRS describes the corrected filing as a superseding return. It replaces the original return rather than serving as a later amendment. This route is different from sending a second original return after the deadline.
Use the tax-year instructions and your filing method’s procedures to determine whether a superseding return is available. If the corrected return shows additional tax, paying it by the original due date can help avoid penalties or interest. Once the due date has passed, do not submit another original return; use Form 1040-X when an amendment is required.
Deadlines for an amended refund or credit

- Three years after the original return was filed, or
- Two years after the tax was paid.
This is a general rule, not a universal deadline. Special circumstances can extend or alter the period, so check the Form 1040-X instructions and relevant IRS guidance. If you filed early, the general three-year period normally runs from the return’s due date. The instructions describe an exception when an extension applied and the return was filed before the extended date.
Do not wait for the amendment deadline if you owe money. Pay the additional tax as soon as the amount is known. Paying by the original return due date can avoid penalties and interest. For a late-filed amended return, the IRS says not to calculate or include penalties and interest on Form 1040-X; the IRS will make the needed adjustments.

The IRS’s April 28, 2026 Tax Tip 2026-35 says amended returns generally take 8 to 12 weeks, although some cases take up to 16 weeks. The IRS amended-return FAQ advises allowing up to 16 weeks. These are estimates, not guarantees; identity checks, missing information, prior adjustments, and workload can extend processing.
You can generally begin checking status about three weeks after submission with the IRS amended-return status tool. Have the identifying information from the amended return available, and check the IRS status page for the current tool and instructions. A status showing receipt is not the same as approval of the refund or acceptance of every position on the amendment.

Filing Form 1040-X for a rejected return
A rejected e-file was not accepted. Correct and retransmit it, or paper-file it under the rejection instructions. An amendment is for an accepted return.

Sending a second original return after the deadline
After the due date, a second original return can create duplicate-filing problems. Use Form 1040-X for a substantive correction.
Amending a math error the IRS already fixed
Read the notice and account transcript first. The IRS may have corrected the arithmetic without requiring an amendment. Amend only if another material change remains or the IRS specifically directs you to do so.
Using the wrong year’s forms
A 2025 amendment, for example, must use the 2025 return schedules and instructions even if filed in 2026. Tax-law lines, credits, and required attachments change by year.
Leaving out changed schedules
An amended Form 1040-X without the schedules supporting the new figures can delay processing. Include every changed or newly added schedule and supporting form required for that year.
Missing the refund-claim period
Calendar the later-of-three-years-from-filing or two-years-from-payment rule, then check for an exception that applies to your circumstances. A pending amendment does not automatically extend the claim period.
Ignoring payment while waiting
Filing Form 1040-X does not pause interest on an unpaid balance. Pay what you reasonably owe as soon as you calculate it, even if the IRS has not finished processing the amendment.
