How to Coordinate Social Security Claiming Ages With a Spouse

There is no single claiming age that is best for every married couple. Coordinate the decision by comparing each spouse’s own Social Security estimates at several ages, the timing and limits of any spouse benefit, work income and the retirement earnings test, taxes and cash-flow needs, and the survivor benefit the higher earner could leave behind.

Start with both spouses’ actual records in their Social Security accounts and estimators. Then test different combinations rather than assuming you should claim together, that the lower earner should always claim first, or that delaying always produces the greatest lifetime household income.

What “coordinating” means for a married couple

Each spouse has an individual retirement benefit based on their own earnings record. The amount changes with the age at which that person claims. Social Security retirement benefits can generally begin at 62, but claiming before full retirement age (FRA) permanently reduces the worker benefit. Delaying after FRA can earn delayed retirement credits through age 70; waiting beyond 70 does not increase the retirement benefit. See the Social Security Administration’s explanations of early claiming and claiming age.

Marriage adds a separate spouse-benefit calculation and a separate survivor-benefit issue. The couple therefore has more than two dates to choose from: each person may claim their own benefit at a different age, and a spouse benefit may become payable only after the worker on whose record it is based files. The right comparison is the household’s cash flow and protection over time, not either spouse’s age in isolation.

For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67; people born in earlier years should verify their FRA by birth year with SSA. SSA says claiming at 62 can reduce a worker’s benefit by as much as 30% for the applicable birth cohort. The exact reduction depends on birth date and the benefit being claimed.

Build the couple’s planning worksheet first

Do not begin with a rule of thumb. Create one line for each spouse and record the facts that determine the available choices.

  1. Date of birth and FRA. Confirm each spouse’s FRA from SSA, because the early-claiming reduction, earnings-test rules and spouse-benefit reduction depend on it.
  2. Own-record estimates. Retrieve each person’s estimated monthly retirement benefit at several ages, such as 62, FRA and 70, using the person’s SSA account or an SSA estimator. Record the assumptions and the date the estimate was obtained.
  3. Work and earnings. List the expected wages or net self-employment earnings for every year in which either spouse might claim before FRA. Pensions, annuities and investment income are not wages for the retirement earnings test.
  4. Spouse-benefit eligibility. Note whether either spouse could qualify on the other’s record, whether the worker has filed, and whether a qualifying child-care situation could allow a benefit before age 62.
  5. Household spending and other income. Separate essential expenses from discretionary spending and identify pensions, savings withdrawals and employment income that could cover a period in which one or both spouses delay.
  6. Survivor needs. Identify which spouse has the larger projected benefit and what income the survivor would need if that spouse died first.
  7. Health, longevity and taxes. These are personal assumptions, not SSA rules. Use them to stress-test the cash-flow choices, but label them as assumptions rather than guaranteed outcomes.

SSA calculates retirement benefits from a worker’s earnings record. It generally uses the highest 35 years of covered earnings; if a person has fewer than 35 years, zero years can enter the calculation. Continuing to work can replace a lower earnings year with a higher one. The agency explains this effect in Your Retirement Age and When You Stop Work.

Run several claiming combinations

Put the estimates into a month-by-month or annual spreadsheet. For every combination, show each spouse’s benefit, employment income, withdrawals and the total household income. Include the point at which both spouses are receiving benefits and the income available if one spouse dies.

Combination to test What it helps you see Questions to answer
Both claim near 62 Maximum early Social Security cash flow and the effect of early reductions Can the household meet essential expenses if both monthly benefits are permanently lower?
Lower earner claims earlier; higher earner delays Income now while building a larger higher-earner benefit and potentially larger survivor benefit Does the early benefit cover the bridge years, and is the survivor adequately protected?
Higher earner claims earlier; lower earner delays The opposite cash-flow and survivor pattern Would the lower earner’s delayed benefit materially improve later household income?
One spouse claims while the other continues working The interaction of wages, the earnings test and a possible spouse benefit Will benefits be withheld before FRA, and does filing trigger deemed filing for both benefits?
Both delay toward 70 Higher later monthly benefits and the cost of funding the waiting period What savings or work income will cover expenses, and is the survivor benefit worth the additional delay?
One spouse claims at FRA while the other delays A middle path between immediate income and maximum delayed amounts Does the FRA benefit reduce withdrawals without sacrificing the household’s desired protection?

These combinations are a testing framework, not recommendations. Use the actual dollar estimates for each spouse and show the result at different life spans. A spreadsheet can also display the age at which a delayed strategy catches up with an earlier one, but that break-even age is only one measure; liquidity, health, employment and survivor needs can matter more.

Understand each spouse’s own retirement benefit

Claiming before full retirement age

A worker may start retirement benefits as early as 62. Starting before FRA causes an age-based reduction that generally remains in the monthly amount. The maximum reduction commonly cited by SSA is up to 30% compared with waiting until FRA for the relevant birth cohort. The exact amount depends on the person’s FRA and claiming month.

Claiming at full retirement age

At FRA, the worker receives the primary insurance amount used in SSA’s calculations. FRA is not the same for everyone; for people born in 1960 or later it is 67. Verify earlier birth years directly with SSA rather than applying 67 universally.

Delaying after full retirement age

Delayed retirement credits can raise the worker’s retirement benefit for eligible months after FRA through age 70. There is no additional increase for delaying beyond 70. The governing regulation is 20 CFR § 404.313. Delaying one spouse’s benefit while the other claims can therefore produce a deliberately uneven claiming schedule.

Separate a current spouse benefit from a survivor benefit

How a spouse benefit is calculated

A spouse benefit can be available at 62, or at any age when caring for a qualifying child. At the spouse’s FRA, the amount can be up to 50% of the worker’s primary insurance amount. Claiming it before the spouse’s FRA reduces it, and waiting past the spouse’s FRA does not increase the spouse benefit. SSA’s guidance is available at Do You Qualify for Social Security Spouse’s Benefits? and Benefits for Spouses.

The worker generally must be receiving retirement benefits before the other spouse can claim on that record. Consequently, a plan in which the higher earner delays may postpone the point at which a current spouse benefit is payable. Compare that lost or postponed income with the value of the higher earner’s larger own benefit.

Why survivor protection can point in a different direction

A current spouse benefit is capped by the worker’s FRA amount and does not rise because the worker delayed past FRA. A surviving spouse’s benefit is calculated under different rules. Delayed retirement credits on the deceased worker’s record can increase the eligible survivor’s benefit. When one spouse has the larger earnings record, that distinction makes the higher earner’s claiming age especially important for the survivor’s long-term income.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In each scenario, record the income available to the survivor, not just the couple’s income while both are alive. Ask whether the survivor could maintain housing, health costs and other essential expenses after one Social Security check stops or is replaced by a survivor benefit. Do not treat the current spouse-benefit percentage as a forecast of the survivor amount.

Check deemed filing before pursuing a spouse-only strategy

For people who turned 62 on or after January 2, 2016 (generally those born on or after January 2, 1954), SSA’s deemed-filing rules generally apply when they are eligible for both a retirement benefit and a spouse benefit. Filing for one is treated as filing for both, so the person generally cannot take only the spouse benefit while allowing their own retirement benefit to grow. SSA describes the rules and older-cohort exceptions in Filing Rules for Retirement and Spouses Benefits and its spouse-only filing FAQ.

Birth date, eligibility and the exact benefit being claimed matter. Before relying on a spouse-only approach, verify whether deemed filing applies to both spouses and ask SSA how an application will be treated. Do not assume that selecting a particular option on an application will preserve a separate benefit if the law requires deemed filing.

Account for work and the 2026 retirement earnings test

Working while receiving benefits can affect near-term payments before FRA. For 2026, SSA lists an annual earnings-test limit of $24,480 for a person who is below FRA for the entire year. For a person who reaches FRA during 2026, the limit is $65,160 for earnings received before the month FRA is reached. Beginning with the month FRA is reached, earnings do not reduce benefits under this test. These dollar amounts apply to 2026; SSA updates them, so use the current year’s figures when making a future decision. The test counts wages and net earnings from self-employment. It does not count pensions or investment income. Benefits withheld under the test are not necessarily lost forever; SSA adjusts the benefit at FRA to account for months in which benefits were withheld. Because the exact withholding calculation depends on the year and circumstances, obtain the agency’s calculation rather than estimating it from a generic percentage.

Put the expected earnings in the same spreadsheet as the claiming dates. A spouse who claims while still working may receive less cash than the award notice suggests, while a spouse who waits until FRA may avoid the test entirely. Also consider whether additional work years will replace low or zero years in the 35-year benefit computation.

Know what voluntary suspension does

After FRA, a worker can request voluntary suspension to earn delayed retirement credits before age 70. Suspension has a household consequence: benefits payable on that worker’s record, including a spouse’s benefit, are generally suspended as well. SSA discusses this in its filing rules guidance. A suspension strategy therefore cannot be evaluated from the worker’s benefit alone; show the temporary effect on the spouse’s payment and the household’s cash reserve.

Use a decision framework instead of a universal rule

1. Protect essential cash flow

Determine the minimum monthly amount the household must receive from work, Social Security and savings. If delaying requires withdrawals, model the withdrawal rate and the possibility that employment ends earlier than planned. A strategy that produces a larger benefit later can still be impractical if it cannot fund the bridge period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Price the permanent reduction or increase

For each spouse, compare the actual monthly amount at 62, FRA and 70 (or other available dates). Show the difference in dollars per month and annually. Keep the early reduction attached to the person who claims early; do not average the couple’s percentages.

3. Identify when a spouse benefit can start

Mark the worker’s filing date, the other spouse’s eligibility date and any early-claiming reduction. Include deemed filing if the spouse is eligible for both benefits. This prevents a spreadsheet from showing a spouse payment that cannot legally begin on the assumed date.

4. Test survivor income separately

Run a first-death scenario for each spouse. The higher earner’s delayed benefit may provide more survivor protection, while claiming that benefit early may provide more income during the couple’s joint years. Decide how much weight the household places on each period.

5. Recheck work assumptions

Apply the correct earnings-test limit to each calendar year before FRA and identify the month FRA is reached. Include only wages and net self-employment earnings in that test, while still including pensions and investments in the broader household cash-flow forecast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Verify the rules before filing

Claiming decisions are difficult to reverse. Confirm birth-date-based FRA, deemed-filing status, spouse eligibility, the worker’s filing requirement and the current year’s earnings limits with SSA. Keep copies of estimates and application confirmations.

Common coordination mistakes

  • Assuming both spouses should claim together. Different earnings records and different FRAs can make separate dates more suitable.
  • Treating a spouse benefit as half of the check the worker receives. The maximum is tied to up to 50% of the worker’s FRA amount, and early claiming can reduce the spouse amount.
  • Using the current spouse formula to estimate survivor income. Survivor benefits follow a different calculation, and delayed credits can matter.
  • Ignoring the worker’s filing status. A spouse generally cannot receive a benefit on the worker’s record until the worker is receiving benefits.
  • Assuming “file and suspend” preserves every household payment. Voluntary suspension generally suspends benefits payable on the worker’s record, including a spouse benefit.
  • Applying a 2026 earnings limit to another year. The $24,480 and $65,160 figures are specifically for 2026.
  • Counting investment income in the earnings test. The test uses wages and net self-employment earnings, not pensions or investments.
  • Overlooking short work histories. Fewer than 35 years of covered earnings can leave zero years in the benefit computation; later earnings may replace lower years.
  • Choosing a date from a generic break-even article. A break-even age cannot account for your cash needs, health, taxes, work plans or survivor priorities.

Where to get the numbers and confirmation

Each spouse should sign in separately to SSA and save the retirement estimates for the ages being compared. Review the agency’s claiming-age explanation, spouse-benefit pages and working-benefit guidance linked above. If the household has a complicated work history, a government pension, a disabled family member, or a large gap between spouses’ benefits, ask SSA to explain the applicable filing rules before submitting an application. A fee-only retirement-income professional may help model taxes, withdrawals and longevity, but the professional cannot change SSA’s eligibility rules.

Bottom line

Coordinate claiming ages by comparing personal SSA estimates, not by applying a blanket “claim early” or “delay to 70” rule. Choose dates only after you have mapped current cash flow, spouse-benefit eligibility and deemed filing, work-related withholding, the 35-year earnings record and the income the surviving spouse would need. Recheck year-specific limits and the exact filing rules with SSA immediately before claiming.
