Use the gross dividend before US withholding, not the net cash that reached your brokerage account.
Convert US withholding tax separately. For a foreign-tax-credit claim, the tax is converted at the TTBR on the last day of the month immediately before the month in which that tax was paid or deducted. Report the dividend in the income-from-other-sources section and Schedule FSI; claim the credit in Schedule TR, file Form 67 online by the section 139(1) return due date, and complete Schedule FA when your taxpayer status and return form require foreign-asset disclosure.

The rule in one sentence
Indian tax law does not generally ask you to use the dollar rate displayed by your broker on the payment day. For a dividend, Rule 115 uses the SBI telegraphic transfer buying rate on the last day of the month immediately preceding the month in which the dividend was declared, distributed, or paid.
Recommended Free Tools
The conversion applies to the dividend’s gross US-dollar amount. If your broker shows a $100 dividend and $25 withheld, your Indian income is based on $100, not the $75 net credit. The $25 withholding is considered separately for foreign-tax-credit purposes.

| Item | What to use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend income | Gross dividend in USD multiplied by the SBI TTBR for the Rule 115 specified date | Determines the rupee amount reported as foreign dividend income |
| US withholding tax | Tax withheld in USD multiplied by the SBI TTBR for the separate foreign-tax date under the credit rules | Determines the rupee amount considered for foreign-tax credit |
| Exchange-rate source | SBI telegraphic transfer buying rate | Prevents use of an unsupported card rate, app rate, or arbitrary market quote |
| Income-tax return disclosure | Income from other sources and Schedule FSI | Shows the foreign-source dividend and its country |
| Credit claim | Schedule TR plus online Form 67 | Supports relief for eligible US tax already paid or deducted |
What “gross dividend” means
US withholding is normally taken before the money reaches your account. Your broker may therefore show three different figures: the declared dividend, tax withheld, and net amount credited. Indian reporting starts with the declared or gross dividend.
Example: a $100 dividend with 25% withholding
Assume a statement shows a $100 gross dividend, $25 US tax withheld, and $75 credited. The $100 is the foreign income. The $25 is a separate foreign tax amount that may qualify for credit, subject to the Indian limitation and documentation requirements. The $75 cash receipt is not the income figure to substitute in the return.
A 25% withholding figure is only an illustration. Use the amount actually shown on your broker or payer statement; do not assume every US security, account type, taxpayer, or treaty position produces that rate.
Finding the Rule 115 date for a dividend
Start with the statement’s dividend event dates. Rule 115 identifies the specified date by reference to the month in which the dividend was declared, distributed, or paid. The conversion date is the last calendar day of the immediately preceding month.
Single payment example
If a dividend was paid on 18 August, the immediately preceding month is July. The Rule 115 specified date is 31 July. Multiply the gross US-dollar dividend by SBI’s USD TT buying rate applicable on 31 July.
Declaration, distribution, and payment dates
Broker statements can display a declaration date, an ex-dividend or distribution date, and a payment date. Preserve all of them. Use the month that governs the dividend event under Rule 115 and retain the statement that shows why that month was selected. If the dates fall in different months or the statement is unclear, do not silently choose the most favorable rate; document the facts and obtain advice on the applicable event date.
Multiple dividends
Apply the rule separately to each dividend event. A March payment and an April payment can have different specified dates and different TTBRs. Do not convert an entire year’s dividends using one annual average or one rate taken from the brokerage app unless a qualified adviser confirms that approach is permitted for your circumstances.

How to calculate the rupee dividend
- Collect the statement. Record the issuer, security, declaration or payment information, gross dividend in USD, and US tax withheld.
- Identify the relevant month. Determine the month in which the dividend was declared, distributed, or paid for Rule 115 purposes.
- Set the specified date. Choose the last day of the preceding month. For an August dividend event, that is 31 July; for a January event, it is 31 December of the previous year.
- Obtain the SBI TTBR. Use the SBI telegraphic transfer buying rate for USD on that specified date and retain evidence showing the date, currency, and rate.
- Multiply gross dollars by the rate. The formula is:
gross dividend in USD × SBI USD TTBR = INR dividend income. - Keep precision consistently. Retain the unrounded calculation and apply the rounding convention used by your return-preparation process when entering the final rupee amount.
Worked calculation
Suppose the gross dividend is $100, the relevant event month is August, and the SBI USD TTBR on 31 July is ₹83.00. The reportable dividend is $100 × ₹83.00 = ₹8,300. The calculation does not use the $75 net credit.
| Calculation component | Illustrative value |
|---|---|
| Gross dividend | $100 |
| Rule 115 event month | August |
| Specified date | 31 July |
| SBI USD TTBR on specified date | ₹83.00 (illustrative only) |
| Indian dividend income | ₹8,300 |
| Net brokerage credit after 25% withholding | $75; not the income base |
Converting US withholding tax for a foreign-tax credit
The withholding conversion has a different timing rule. Income Tax Department guidance states that foreign tax credit is computed by converting the foreign tax at the telegraphic transfer buying rate on the last day of the month immediately preceding the month in which that tax was paid or deducted.
Therefore, the dividend’s Rule 115 date and the withholding-tax date can differ. The tax date is tied to when the US tax was paid or deducted, not automatically to the dividend’s declaration or payment date.
Separate calculation
- Read the broker or payer statement to determine the amount of US tax actually withheld or deducted.
- Identify the month in which that tax was paid or deducted.
- Use the last day of the immediately preceding month as the foreign-tax conversion date.
- Obtain the SBI TTBR for that date.
- Multiply the tax withheld in USD by that TTBR to obtain the rupee foreign-tax amount.
For example, if $25 was deducted in August and the applicable TTBR on 31 July was ₹83.00, the converted foreign tax is ₹2,075. If the deduction occurred in a later month, use the last day of the month before that later month, even if the dividend itself was converted using an earlier date.

How much foreign-tax credit can you claim?
Conversion into rupees does not guarantee a credit for the entire US withholding amount. The credit is generally limited to the lower of:
- the Indian tax attributable to the same foreign income; or
- the foreign tax actually paid or deducted on that income.
Any excess foreign tax beyond that limit is ignored for the credit calculation. The comparison is income-specific: a credit for US tax on one dividend cannot ordinarily be used to shelter unrelated Indian income.
Illustrative limitation
Assume the $100 dividend converts to ₹8,300 and the $25 withholding converts to ₹2,075. If the Indian tax attributable to that dividend is ₹1,600, the credit is generally capped at ₹1,600, not ₹2,075. If the attributable Indian tax is ₹2,500, the credit is generally capped at the ₹2,075 foreign-tax amount. These figures are demonstrations of the cap, not a calculation of your actual slab rate, surcharge, cess, or treaty result.

Keep the dividend-income conversion and tax conversion on separate working papers. Combining them into a single net-dollar calculation can obscure both the gross-income requirement and the credit limitation.
Where to report US dividends in an Indian ITR
Income from other sources
US dividends are generally reported under the return’s income-from-other-sources section. Enter the rupee amount calculated from the gross dividend and the applicable Rule 115 TTBR. Do not reduce this income by the US withholding merely because the broker deposited a net amount.
Schedule FSI
Schedule FSI is used for foreign-source income. Provide the country, the nature of the income, the converted amount, and the related foreign-tax information requested by the assessment-year form. Use the same gross-income figure and conversion basis as your working papers.
Schedule TR
Schedule TR records relief or foreign-tax credit claimed. Complete it when you are claiming credit for eligible US tax, using the separately converted foreign-tax amount and the permitted credit after applying the limitation.
Schedule FA
Schedule FA concerns foreign assets and income from foreign assets when the taxpayer and the selected return form require that disclosure. A US brokerage account or securities may therefore require reporting even though the dividend itself is also reported in the income and FSI schedules. Check the assessment-year instructions and your residential-status facts before deciding whether Schedule FA applies.
Form 67: the online prerequisite for claiming credit
For a resident taxpayer claiming credit for foreign tax paid outside India by deduction or otherwise, the Income Tax Department’s Form 67 guidance requires the statement to be furnished online. Submit Form 67 by the due date for the return under section 139(1), following the applicable assessment-year portal process.
Information to assemble before filing
- Gross dividend amount and the date information shown by the broker or payer.
- US tax withheld, with the statement identifying it as foreign tax.
- INR conversion workings for both the dividend and the foreign tax.
- Country and source details needed for Schedule FSI and Schedule TR.
- Any account or asset details required for Schedule FA.
After submitting Form 67
Save the acknowledgement and the submitted data. The form supports the credit claim; it does not replace the ITR schedules. Enter the credit in Schedule TR and retain the same supporting figures so the Form 67, schedules, and broker statement reconcile.

End-to-end filing workflow
- Download statements for every dividend. Use issuer or broker records that show gross dividend, withholding, and relevant dates.
- Build a dividend ledger. Give each payment its own row with security, gross USD, US tax USD, event dates, Rule 115 specified date, SBI TTBR, and INR income.
- Build a tax ledger. For each withholding entry, record the payment or deduction month, the separate specified date, SBI TTBR, and INR foreign tax.
- Reconcile cash. Gross dividend minus withholding should agree with the net brokerage credit, subject to fees, adjustments, or currency movements shown on the statement.
- Calculate the credit cap. Compare converted foreign tax with Indian tax attributable to the same income.
- Complete the return sections. Enter income from other sources, Schedule FSI, Schedule TR if claiming credit, and Schedule FA when applicable.
- Submit Form 67 online. File it by the section 139(1) due date applicable to your return.
- Review consistency. Check that gross income, foreign tax, exchange-rate dates, country, and credit figures agree across the ledger, Form 67, and ITR schedules.
- File and preserve evidence. Save the ITR acknowledgement, Form 67 acknowledgement, statements, TTBR evidence, and calculations.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the net amount credited
Problem: Reporting $75 because that is what arrived after $25 withholding understates foreign income.
Correction: Report the $100 gross dividend and handle the $25 as a separate foreign-tax figure.

Records to retain
Keep a complete audit trail for each dividend and each withholding entry:
- Broker or payer statement showing declaration, distribution, or payment information.
- Gross dividend in USD and US tax withheld in USD.
- SBI TTBR evidence for every specified date used.
- The calculation showing gross income conversion and separate tax conversion.
- Form 67 submission and acknowledgement.
- Filed ITR acknowledgement and copies of Schedules FSI, TR, and FA when applicable.
- Notes explaining any date ambiguity, amended statement, refund, or adjustment.
Retain records for the period relevant to Indian tax assessment and use a consistent naming system, such as security-date-income or security-date-tax, so a later query can be answered without reconstructing the exchange-rate history.
Checks before you submit
- Is every dividend reported on a gross basis?
- Does each dividend have a Rule 115 specified date tied to the relevant declaration, distribution, or payment month?
- Is each rate an SBI TTBR rather than an unsupported market or card rate?
- Was US withholding converted using the month before the tax was paid or deducted?
- Does the claimed credit respect the lower-of limit?
- Do income from other sources and Schedule FSI agree?
- Does Schedule TR agree with the foreign-tax calculation and Form 67?
- Have you assessed whether Schedule FA applies to your account or securities?
- Do you have the statements, rate evidence, acknowledgements, and filed schedules saved?
Tax forms, portal labels, and filing deadlines can change by assessment year. Confirm the current ITR instructions and Form 67 process for the year you are filing before submission.
