These controls do not make every Walmart advertisement disappear. Walmart says ads may continue after an opt-out, but they should not be tailored to your interests. A browser-only choice covers that browser on that computer, while a logged-in account request can reach more information associated with your account. Walmart says the opt-out applies immediately to data collected during the interaction, while older information may take up to 15 days to process.

What you can control—and what you cannot
Walmart separates the delivery of an advertisement from the use of information to target that advertisement. Opting out of interest-based advertising or targeted advertising generally changes how ads are selected; it does not remove all advertising space from Walmart.com, the app, or other sites.

Turning off personalization can also change experiences that depend on personal information. Walmart says it will not discriminate or retaliate against people who exercise privacy rights, but a feature may work differently when it cannot use information you declined to share or process.

Start in the Walmart Privacy Center
The Privacy Center is Walmart’s public starting point for privacy actions. Open it from a current Walmart privacy notice or Walmart account help area, then choose the path that matches your goal. The labels Walmart identifies are Privacy Requests, Your Privacy Choices, Consumer Health Data Choices, and Ad Choices.
- Decide what you want to change. For fewer personalized ads, use Ad Choices or Your Privacy Choices. For a copy of your information, correction, or deletion, use Privacy Requests. For a health-data-specific decision, use Consumer Health Data Choices.
- Sign in when the option is offered. An account-based request can cover information associated with that account. If you proceed without signing in, treat the result as a browser or device-level choice unless Walmart tells you otherwise.
- Read the confirmation. Save the request confirmation or Privacy Request ID. You may need the ID and your ZIP code if Walmart offers an appeal after declining a request.
- Repeat on other browsers or computers. A choice made in one browser does not automatically cover a different browser or computer.
Turn off Walmart interest-based advertising
Account-level route
Walmart’s customer privacy notice says shoppers can opt out of Walmart interest-based ads through their Walmart.com account. Sign in, open the privacy or advertising-controls area, and select the option to opt out of interest-based advertising. The advertising settings also address interest-based ads delivered by Walmart’s demand-side platform on sites outside Walmart.com.
After submitting the setting, look for an on-screen acknowledgement and retain a screenshot or confirmation email. Do not assume that an ad disappearing proves the setting worked: an ad may simply have changed, and Walmart says non-personalized ads can continue.
Browser-only route
If you shop without signing in, the setting can be tied to the current web browser on the current computer. Walmart says shoppers using multiple browsers or computers must opt out on each one. Deleting cookies can remove the identifier used to remember the choice, so you may have to opt out again after clearing saved cookies or using private browsing.
Mobile devices
Walmart directs shoppers to their mobile operating-system advertising settings for mobile interest-based-ad choices. Because Apple, Google, and other operating systems change labels and menu locations, use the privacy or advertising section in your phone’s current settings rather than relying on an old path copied from another device. The device setting is an additional layer; it does not replace an account request or a GPC signal.

Use Global Privacy Control for targeted advertising and sale/sharing
Global Privacy Control is a browser signal that tells participating sites you do not want certain processing. Walmart says GPC can be used to opt out of processing for targeted advertising and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
Enable the signal
- Use a browser or privacy extension that supports Global Privacy Control.
- Turn on the browser’s GPC setting and verify that the setting is enabled for the browsing session.
- Visit Walmart while the signal is active. Do not block the signal with a content-control setting that prevents the site from receiving it.
- Look for Walmart’s notification that the opt-out request is honored. Walmart says it will display a notification when it receives a GPC signal or a request to opt out of sale/sharing, including for targeted advertising.
GPC is browser-specific. A signal sent by one browser does not automatically represent a preference expressed from another browser, a different computer, or a separate app session. Keep the setting enabled on each browser you use for Walmart.

Logged-in accounts and connected products
Walmart says that when you are logged in, the GPC opt-out extends to your Walmart account rather than remaining only an anonymous browser signal. Walmart also says account-linked VIZIO OS products can be covered when the relevant current firmware supports the signal. The statement does not create a separate switch for every television or connected device, so check the device and account privacy notices for the controls actually offered.
Understand timing: current activity versus older records
Walmart distinguishes between information collected during the interaction and information already held in its systems. It says an opt-out is immediately effective for data collected during that interaction. For other data already held, processing the opt-out may take up to 15 days from receipt of the request.

The 15-day period is a processing window, not a promise that every advertising impression will change at the same moment. Ad systems, browsers, devices, and logged-in sessions can update on different schedules.

What an opt-out does not do
- It does not remove every ad. Walmart says you may still see advertisements on Walmart.com after opting out; they may not be related to your interests.
- It does not erase your account. An advertising opt-out is different from a deletion request. Use the Privacy Requests path if you want to ask Walmart to delete eligible personal information.
- It does not automatically cover every browser or device. Browser-based choices must be repeated after moving to another browser or computer, and deleting cookies can require a new opt-out.
- It does not necessarily stop all service personalization. Some shopping, membership, or convenience features may rely on information you choose not to have processed.
- It does not make an AI conversation anonymous. Generative-AI inputs have their own terms and retention purposes, described below.
Submit an access, correction, deletion, or appeal request
Privacy Requests is the appropriate path when your goal is broader than advertising. Depending on your region, Walmart says you may be able to request access to personal information, correction of inaccurate information, deletion, or an opt-out of targeted advertising or sale/sharing.

Access
An access request asks what personal information Walmart holds or uses about you, subject to the limits and verification requirements that apply in your jurisdiction. Provide the identifying details the form requests so Walmart can match the request to the correct person without exposing someone else’s information.
Correction
Use correction when information is inaccurate or incomplete. Be specific about the field or record that needs changing and supply the corrected value only where the form permits it. Correcting account information is not the same as opting out of targeted advertising.
Deletion
A deletion request asks Walmart to delete eligible personal information. Deletion can affect account functions, order history access, saved preferences, or other experiences that require the information. Read the form’s consequences before confirming, and save the request number.
Appeal
If Walmart declines a request, its notices describe an appeal process where applicable. The process may require the Privacy Request ID and ZIP code. An appeal is a review of the declined request; it is not a substitute for enabling GPC or turning off an advertising preference while the review is pending.

Protect what you type into Walmart’s generative-AI features
Advertising controls do not govern every use of text entered into an AI shopping assistant. Walmart’s Terms of Use state: Do not share any sensitive or personal data, or any proprietary or confidential information with the Generative AI Features.
The same terms explain that inputs are collected, used, and retained to answer questions, improve and maintain Walmart Sites, develop new features and services, and for other purposes described in the privacy policy. That means a prompt is not the same as a private note that disappears when the chat window closes.
Do not include these details
- Payment-card numbers, bank-account numbers, passwords, or one-time authentication codes.
- Government identification numbers, medical records, or precise health details.
- Private information about another person, such as a child’s full name and diagnosis.
- Employer trade secrets, unreleased product plans, customer lists, or confidential documents.
- Full order receipts or screenshots that expose addresses, phone numbers, or account identifiers.
Use a safer prompt
Replace identifying details with general facts. Instead of pasting a medical prescription, ask for a general explanation of how to compare product features and then consult a qualified professional for personal advice. Instead of sharing an order number and address, describe the problem without identifiers and use Walmart’s ordinary order-support channel for account-specific help.
Walmart’s 2025 Retail Rewired report presents privacy and security as important to adoption of agentic AI and describes more personalized AI-powered customer solutions. It does not establish a separate consumer switch for every AI feature. Treat the AI terms and the Privacy Center controls as complementary, not interchangeable.

Troubleshoot a setting that appears not to work
You still see personalized-looking ads
Confirm that the request was submitted under the intended Walmart account, that the browser still has the opt-out cookie or GPC enabled, and that the 15-day processing window has elapsed for previously held information. An ad can look relevant by coincidence or because it reflects the page you are viewing rather than a profile about you. Walmart’s commitment is that opted-out ads may not be related to your interests, not that every ad will look random.

The setting disappeared after clearing cookies
Walmart says deleting saved cookies can require you to opt out again. Revisit the Privacy Center in that browser and repeat the choice. If you use private browsing, expect the preference to be temporary or to require a new action in the next session.
GPC works on one device but not another
Check that both browsers support and have enabled GPC. A signal is sent by the browser, not universally by your household or Wi-Fi connection. If you are signed in on one device and anonymous on another, the scope can also differ.
A request was declined
Review the notice for the appeal route and gather the Privacy Request ID and ZIP code if requested. Rights and appeal procedures vary by jurisdiction, so a decline in one region or for one request type does not establish the result for every other request.
A shopping feature changed after opting out
Some experiences require personal information. Read the explanation shown with the feature, decide whether the convenience is worth the data use, and choose the narrowest control that meets your goal rather than deleting the entire account by default.
A practical privacy routine for Walmart shoppers
- Sign in to Walmart and review the privacy and advertising choices in the account.
- Enable GPC in every browser you use for Walmart, including a separate mobile browser if it supports the signal.
- Review your phone or tablet’s advertising controls after major operating-system updates.
- Use the Privacy Requests path for access, correction, deletion, or an appeal instead of expecting an ad setting to perform those tasks.
- Record confirmation screens, dates, and request IDs; wait up to 15 days for older information to be processed.
- Keep sensitive and confidential information out of generative-AI prompts, even when the assistant appears to be operating inside your account.
The most complete approach combines an account-level choice, GPC, device settings, and careful AI-chat habits. Each addresses a different data flow, and none should be treated as a universal “no ads” switch.
