How to Contact Your Federal Student Loan Servicer Safely

The safest way to find and contact your federal student loan servicer is to start at StudentAid.gov, not from a message, search advertisement, or unsolicited phone call. Sign in and open your Dashboard or My Aid details to see which company is assigned to the specific loan. Use the contact route shown in your account and verify it against Federal Student Aid’s current official servicer list.

If you cannot sign in or cannot identify the servicer, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243. Never give anyone your StudentAid.gov username or password, and do not pay a company for federal repayment-plan, consolidation, or forgiveness assistance that your servicer provides at no cost.

Why the account-first approach matters

Your federal loans may not all have the same servicer, and a servicer can change after a transfer. The company that contacts you, appears in an old email, or is printed on a previous statement may no longer be the correct point of contact. StudentAid.gov is the authoritative starting point for the loans currently associated with your federal account.

The Dashboard shows loan information and next-payment details. My Aid details provide the servicer associated with each loan. Looking up the loan before calling prevents you from discussing the wrong account and gives you an independent way to reject a convincing-looking message that uses a different phone number or web address.

Contact information and account interfaces can change. Use the live information displayed in your account and the current official servicer list rather than relying on a saved number or an older notice.

Six steps to contact the right servicer safely

  1. Open StudentAid.gov yourself. Type the address into your browser or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not open a link in an unexpected text, email, social-media message, or pop-up. Check that the site is the one you intended to visit before entering anything.
  2. Sign in through the normal account page. Enter your credentials only on the official StudentAid.gov sign-in page. Federal Student Aid and its loan-servicing partners will not ask you to disclose your StudentAid.gov username or password by phone, email, or text.
  3. Open Dashboard or My Aid. Find the loan in question and read the servicer shown for that loan. Record the company name exactly as displayed. If you have several loans, check each one rather than assuming one company handles every loan.
  4. Cross-check the company. Compare the name and contact path with Federal Student Aid’s current official servicer list. The published list includes Edfinancial, MOHELA, Aidvantage, Nelnet, ECSI, Default Resolution Group, and CRI. The list and contact details can change, so use the current page instead of an old copy.
  5. Use the verified channel. Select the servicer’s website, telephone number, email option, or chat route reached through the verified account or official list. Do not substitute a phone number supplied by an unsolicited caller. If you are already on the servicer’s official site, confirm that the account and company name match before discussing personal information.
  6. Keep your details current. Update your mailing address, email address, and telephone number in both StudentAid.gov and the servicer’s account. Accurate details help you receive billing statements, transfer notices, and security alerts.

If you cannot log in or still cannot identify the company

Use the official telephone fallback: call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. This is the route Federal Student Aid directs borrowers to use when they do not know their servicer. It is also appropriate when a sign-in problem prevents you from viewing Dashboard or My Aid information.

Do not let a caller who claims to be helping you “verify” your account by collecting your StudentAid.gov password. A legitimate representative can direct you to an official recovery or contact process without taking that credential. If you receive a suspicious callback request while you are locked out, end the call and dial the FSAIC number yourself.

Once FSAIC or an official notice identifies the servicer, repeat the independent check: enter StudentAid.gov yourself, look for the loan, and use the contact route shown there. This second check is especially useful if the first notice arrived during a transfer or after a long period without account activity.

Which contact route should you use?

Route When it works What it establishes Limit
StudentAid.gov Dashboard or My Aid You can sign in Shows the loan, assigned servicer, and related loan or next-payment information Requires account access
FSAIC at 1-800-433-3243 You cannot sign in or do not know the servicer Provides an official starting point for identifying the correct route It is a federal information center, not a substitute for the servicer’s account-specific billing support
Verified servicer telephone support You need help with billing, repayment, or an account issue Connects you with the company assigned to the loan Use only the number reached through StudentAid.gov, the current official list, or a verified notice
Verified servicer email or chat Your question is suitable for written or online support Creates a support conversation through the servicer’s published channel Do not use an address or chat link supplied by an unexpected message

Federal Student Aid’s repayment overview describes email and chat support and recommends calling the servicer last among those support options. That ordering is a convenience suggestion, not a rule that prevents you from calling when your situation requires it. The safety requirement is that whichever channel you choose must be reached independently and verified first.

Prepare before you contact the servicer

Start with the loan record, not the incoming message. Note the loan’s servicer as it appears in Dashboard or My Aid, along with the next-payment information shown there. If more than one loan is involved, make a separate note for each company so you do not accidentally apply an answer or payment instruction to the wrong account.

For a telephone call, begin with the number reached from your independently opened StudentAid.gov account or the current official list. If a representative gives you a web address, close the call before navigating there and type the address yourself. A safe workflow separates identification from contact: first establish which company is assigned, then choose how to communicate with it.

How to recognize a student-loan scam

Fraudulent messages often borrow official-sounding names, seals, logos, and government-style language. Those visual details are not proof of authenticity. Treat an unexpected request as unverified until you navigate to StudentAid.gov or the official servicer list yourself.

  • A request for your StudentAid.gov username or password. Federal Student Aid’s warning is explicit: The U.S. Department of Education and our partners—including loan servicers—will never ask for your StudentAid.gov username and password.
  • A different phone number or web address. A message may display a familiar company name while directing you to an unofficial address. Close the message and use the account or official list you opened independently.
  • A fee for routine federal help. Servicers can assist with repayment plans, consolidation, and forgiveness processes at no cost. Enrollment, subscription, maintenance, or upfront fees are warning signs, particularly when payment is demanded before any explanation of your options.
  • Pressure to act immediately. A demand that you pay, sign, or disclose information before you can verify the sender is a reason to stop, not a reason to hurry.
  • Promises that payment guarantees forgiveness. No private caller can make a federal servicer’s free assistance more official by charging you. Verify the program and account through StudentAid.gov.

Do not click the message’s link merely to inspect it. Open a fresh browser window, enter StudentAid.gov yourself, and compare the servicer shown for your loan with the name in the message. A match in the name alone is not enough; the contact path must also come from the independently opened official source.

What to do if you already shared information or paid

  1. Change your StudentAid.gov password immediately if you gave it to someone you now suspect is fraudulent. Use the official sign-in route rather than a reset link in the suspicious message.
  2. Inspect your account profile. Check the email address, mailing address, and telephone number for changes you did not make. Correct unauthorized changes through the official account process.
  3. Review loan activity and notices. Look for unfamiliar communications or account changes, then contact the verified servicer through the route shown in StudentAid.gov.
  4. File a complaint with Federal Student Aid. Report the conduct so the agency has a record of the suspected fraud.
  5. Contact your bank or card issuer if you paid the company. Ask what steps are available to stop additional payments or dispute the transaction.
  6. Use the other official complaint channels. Federal Student Aid identifies the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as additional places to report a suspected student-loan scam.

Keep copies of the message, caller information, receipts, and dates. Those records help the agencies and your financial institution understand what happened without requiring you to continue communicating with the suspected scammer.

Transfers: when the servicer changes

A transfer can make an old contact route obsolete. After the transferred loans have been fully loaded into the new servicer’s system and the new servicer has notified you, Federal Student Aid says the new information should generally appear on StudentAid.gov within 7–10 business days. This is a general estimate, not a guaranteed deadline.

During that window, check both the Dashboard and the transfer notice. Do not infer that a missing name means the transfer failed, and do not use a number in an unsolicited “update” message to fill the gap. If the account still does not show the expected servicer after the notice and the stated loading period, contact FSAIC or use the official route already displayed in your account.

Keep payment records and read the transfer notice carefully. A change in servicing does not make an unofficial fee legitimate, and it does not authorize a new company to request your StudentAid.gov password.

Special loan situations that use a different route

Federal Perkins Loans

For a Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Student Aid says to contact the school where you received the loan. If the Perkins loan has been assigned to the Department of Education, contact ECSI instead. Confirm which situation applies through your account and official notices before sending payment or personal information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Loans in default

For defaulted loans held by the Department of Education, the Default Resolution Group is the official servicer. Some loans may not yet have transferred, so confirm the current route in your borrower account and in official notices rather than assuming that every defaulted loan is already with that group.

Several programs or servicers at once

If your account lists more than one servicer, handle each loan separately. A repayment question, payment amount, or transfer notice may apply to only one company’s portion of your debt. Save the servicer name associated with each loan before you begin a support conversation.

Billing timing: what the 21-day rule does and does not mean

Federal Student Aid’s current payment-preparation guidance says a payment is due no sooner than 21 days after the servicer sends a billing statement. That is a billing-timing requirement, not a promise that customer service will answer within 21 days and not a reason to ignore a statement. Read the actual due date on the verified statement and contact the servicer promptly if the amount or date appears wrong.

  • Use the school or ECSI route for Perkins Loans when applicable.
  • Use the Default Resolution Group route for Department of Education-held defaulted loans, after confirming the current assignment.
  • Keep contact information current in both accounts.
