The safest way to contact the IRS about a letter is to read the notice first, verify it through an IRS-controlled channel, and then use the telephone number printed on that verified notice. If the letter seems suspicious, do not call its number, scan its QR code, click its link or send information through its website. Check your IRS Online Account, search the official notices and letters pages, and reach the IRS through contact details you independently confirm on IRS.gov.
This process helps you handle a genuine tax issue before a deadline while avoiding impersonators who use urgency, threats and realistic-looking mail to steal money or personal information. A letter is often the IRS’s first contact about a particular return or account, so treating it as both a possible real obligation and a possible impersonation is the safest approach.

How do I contact the IRS about a letter?
Start with the letter itself. IRS notices normally identify the tax year or account involved, explain the issue, state what the IRS wants you to do and provide a response date. The notice may ask you to pay, provide records, correct a return, verify identity or explain why you disagree. Read every page, including enclosures and the response instructions, before making a call.

The IRS says a taxpayer who needs to call should use “the number in the upper right-hand corner of the notice” and have a copy of the tax return and letter available. That language appears in Tax Tip 2026-39, published May 12, 2026.
- Record the notice details. Write down the notice or letter number, tax year, date issued, deadline, telephone number, mailing address and requested documents.
- Check for an IRS copy. Sign in to your secure IRS Online Account and look for the notice. You can also search the IRS notices and letters pages by notice number or subject.
- Confirm the contact route. If the notice is verified, call the number printed on it for that specific matter. Do not substitute a number found in a search engine, an email or a separate piece of mail.
- Prepare before calling. Keep the notice, the relevant tax return, payment records, prior correspondence and identification information nearby. The representative may need details from more than one page.
- Follow the notice’s response method. If it requests an online response, upload through the IRS site named in the notice. If it requests a mailed reply, use the address and payment or voucher instructions printed there.
- Document the conversation. Note the date, time, representative’s name or identification number if provided, what was agreed and any follow-up deadline. Keep copies of everything you send.
If the letter contains several pages, do not rely on a headline or payment amount alone. An enclosure may contain the actual response form, documentation list or appeal explanation. Compare the tax year and notice number on every page, and do not discard the envelope until you have finished verifying the item.
A notice-specific number is not a universal IRS help line. It is the safest route for the issue described on that notice after you have confirmed that the notice is genuine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow can I tell if an IRS letter is real?
Use more than the envelope’s appearance. A convincing logo, government-style formatting or a familiar return address does not prove authenticity. Verification should come from an IRS-controlled account or website, not from contact information supplied only by the letter.
Check the notice in your IRS Online Account
Sign in directly by typing IRS.gov into your browser, then open your IRS Online Account. Do not use a link or QR code in the letter. Look for a notice matching the number, tax year and issue described in the mail. An online copy is strong confirmation that the correspondence is connected to your federal tax account.
If you do not see the letter, do not treat that absence alone as proof of fraud. Some notices or account events may not appear immediately. Use the IRS notices and letters search, then contact the IRS through a route reached independently from IRS.gov if the document still cannot be confirmed. The IRS describes these verification steps in its notice guidance.
Search the official notices and letters pages
Enter the notice number exactly as printed, including any letter prefix or suffix. Read the IRS description to see whether the stated purpose, requested action and response address are consistent. A search result can explain a legitimate notice, but it does not by itself authenticate every piece of mail using that number; scammers can copy real notice numbers.

Use the search as one part of a check, not as permission to follow the letter’s web address. If the online description conflicts with the letter’s tax year, requested action or payment instructions, stop and verify through an IRS.gov contact route.
Inspect the links and requested action
- IRS web links use the irs.gov domain. An address such as “irs.com,” a misspelled domain or a different top-level domain is a warning sign.
- Unexpected requests for bank details, credit-card information, passwords, full login credentials or sensitive identity data deserve independent verification.
- Threats of immediate arrest, deportation, license cancellation or a police visit, especially paired with a demand for instant payment, are classic scam indicators.
- Spelling and grammar errors, unusual formatting, attachments or instructions to scan a QR code should make you pause.
The IRS lists these warning signs in “Know the warning signs of a tax scam” and “Beware of scammers posing as the IRS.”
Urgency is a behavioral warning sign even when the document looks polished. A demand to call back within minutes, pay through an unusual method or keep the conversation secret is not a reason to skip verification. Pause, preserve the letter and use an independently opened IRS.gov page instead.
Which IRS contact route should you use?
Choose the route based on what you are trying to establish. These options are complementary, not interchangeable.
| Route | Best use | Trust check | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telephone number printed on a verified notice | Questions, payment arrangements or document instructions for that notice | Confirm the notice through your IRS Online Account or official notice lookup first | It is for the notice’s issue, not every tax question |
| IRS Online Account | Checking whether a notice or account message exists | Type IRS.gov yourself and sign in through the secure account | A missing document is a reason to verify further, not conclusive proof of fraud |
| IRS notices and letters search | Understanding a notice number and its stated purpose | Use the IRS.gov notices and letters pages | Matching a number does not authenticate a counterfeit letter by itself |
| IRS.gov customer-service route | Suspicious, unconfirmed or unclear correspondence | Navigate to IRS.gov independently rather than using the letter’s details | Use the route appropriate to the tax issue and current IRS instructions |
| 800-829-1040 | Fallback specifically identified on the IRS Letter 725-B page when that letter is missing from search or appears suspicious | Confirm the number on the official Letter 725-B page | Do not present it as a universal number for every IRS matter |
The IRS page for Letter 725-B specifically directs recipients to call 800-829-1040 if that letter does not appear in the search or looks suspicious. That instruction applies to Letter 725-B; other notices may provide a different number or response channel. The page was checked October 9, 2026, so confirm current instructions on IRS.gov when you need them.
What should I do if a letter claiming to be from the IRS looks suspicious?
- Stop the interaction. Do not call the number, reply, click a link, open an attachment, scan a QR code or visit the website printed in the letter.
- Do not pay under pressure. Never buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency, wire money to an individual or provide a payment-card number merely because a letter threatens immediate consequences.
- Preserve evidence. Photograph or scan all pages and the envelope, retain postal markings and write down any telephone numbers, web addresses or payment instructions.
- Verify independently. Go to IRS.gov yourself, check your IRS Online Account and search the notice number. If you still cannot confirm it, use an IRS contact path reached from IRS.gov.
- Report the scheme through the appropriate IRS channel. The IRS reporting page explains different procedures for fake mail, email, text messages, telephone calls and websites.
- Secure exposed accounts. If you entered credentials or financial information, change affected passwords through the legitimate service, contact your financial institution and monitor accounts. If money or identity information was stolen, follow the IRS recovery guidance for the type of contact involved.
Use the IRS reporting page for current channel-specific reporting instructions. A suspicious letter can be reported even if you are not certain who sent it. Save the original file or paper copy and your notes before submitting a report, because the reporting process may ask for the wording, sender details, links or payment instructions.
Do not let a real notice become a missed deadline
Scam warnings should not lead you to ignore authentic mail. IRS guidance says prompt action can minimize additional interest and penalties where they apply. After verification, follow the notice’s deadline and instructions even if you disagree with the proposed change.

If you agree with the notice
Use the payment method, voucher and mailing or online address printed in the notice. Before paying, confirm that you are on an IRS.gov page and that the tax year, notice number and amount match. Keep the payment confirmation and a copy of the notice together.
If you disagree
Use the dispute or appeal instructions in the notice rather than sending an explanation to a random IRS address. Include the requested records and a clear explanation of the specific item you dispute. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals, unless the notice expressly requires an original. Keep the letter, your response, attachments, proof of mailing or upload confirmation and every subsequent IRS reply.
Read the response instructions for the correct channel and deadline. A phone conversation does not replace a written response when the notice asks for documents or an explanation. If you mail material, retain proof of mailing; if you upload it, save the confirmation page or other submission record.
If you need more time or cannot pay
Ask the representative or use the instructions on the notice to learn which extension, payment arrangement or alternative applies to your situation. Do not assume that calling automatically pauses the deadline; obtain and record the IRS’s stated next step.
How to make an IRS call safely
Call only after verifying the notice and using its printed number, or after independently confirming an IRS.gov route for a suspicious document. Have the notice and relevant return available, as the IRS’s 2026 guidance recommends.
Recommended Free Tools
- Call from a private location and avoid reading sensitive information aloud where others can hear.
- Ask what notice number, tax year and account issue the representative is addressing.
- Do not provide a password, one-time authentication code or online-account security answer to someone who called you unexpectedly.
- Write down instructions and deadlines, then verify any web address by typing IRS.gov yourself.
- If the conversation becomes threatening or demands an unusual payment method, end the call and recontact the IRS through an independently confirmed number.
Not every telephone contact claiming to follow a letter is fake. The IRS generally begins contact by mail, but its guidance says an agent may call after a notice to confirm an appointment or discuss a scheduled audit. That limited follow-up is different from an unsolicited demand for immediate payment or a caller claiming an arrest warrant will be issued if you do not call back. See Tax Tip 2025-46 for the distinction.
IRS contact patterns that help you spot impersonation
The IRS’s normal sequence matters. Its July 8, 2025 guidance says, “A letter or notice is the first way the IRS will contact a taxpayer.” The IRS does not initiate contact by email, text message or social media. Its 2025 guidance notes a limited exception: text messages may be sent when a taxpayer has given permission by subscribing to a service.

That does not mean every unexpected phone call is fraudulent. A call may follow mailed correspondence for a scheduled audit or appointment. Judge the call by whether it connects to a notice you can verify, uses an appropriate payment process and avoids threats or demands for information unrelated to the stated issue.
Likewise, an email, text or social-media message that claims a letter is waiting should not become your verification route. Open IRS.gov yourself and use the account or notices search. If you did subscribe to an IRS text service, that limited permission does not make an unsolicited payment demand or a link outside IRS.gov trustworthy.
Example: the cryptocurrency “compliance portal” letter
The IRS has warned about a fake letter aimed at cryptocurrency holders that directs recipients to a fraudulent “Digital Asset Compliance Portal.” The IRS says it did not send the letter and does not operate that portal. Do not scan its QR code, visit its site or respond through it. Verify any real tax issue through IRS.gov and your IRS Online Account instead. The warning appears in Tax Tip 2024-63.
This example illustrates why a specific tax topic does not make a letter credible. Scammers can tailor mail to cryptocurrency, employment, refunds or identity verification. The deciding evidence is the independently verified IRS account, notice lookup and contact route—not the sophistication of the story or the presence of a tax-related logo.
A practical recordkeeping checklist
Create one folder, digital or paper, for the notice and its resolution. Include:
- The original letter and envelope
- A screenshot or printout of the matching IRS Online Account message, if available
- The tax return and schedules for the affected year
- Copies of documents submitted to the IRS
- Certified-mail receipts, upload confirmations and payment records
- A call log with dates, numbers dialed, representatives and promised follow-up
- Every IRS response and any revised deadline
This file prevents you from relying on memory and makes it easier to prove that you responded on time if the account later shows a problem. Record which website you used to verify the notice and whether the number you called came from the verified notice or from an IRS.gov page.
When to get additional help
Most notice verification can be done with IRS.gov, the notice and your tax records; you do not need to buy a service to determine whether a letter is genuine. Consider professional tax advice only when the underlying issue is unusually complex, involves a large disputed amount, a business or international reporting, or you cannot understand the response and appeal rights. A paid adviser cannot replace independent verification of a suspicious letter or its payment instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I contact the IRS about a letter?
Read the notice, verify it in your IRS Online Account or through the IRS notices and letters search, then call the telephone number printed on the verified notice. Have the letter and relevant tax return ready. If the letter is suspicious, use contact details reached independently through IRS.gov instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How can I tell if an IRS letter is real?
Check for a matching notice in your secure IRS Online Account and compare the notice number, tax year, issue and requested action with the official IRS notice description. A missing online copy is not conclusive proof of fraud, so verify directly through IRS.gov.
What should I do if a letter claiming to be from the IRS looks suspicious?
Do not call its number, scan its QR code, click its links, open attachments or pay. Preserve the letter and envelope, verify through IRS.gov, and use the IRS reporting page for the contact type involved. If you shared financial or identity information, contact the affected institution and follow IRS recovery guidance.
Is 800-829-1040 the IRS number for every letter?
No. The general instruction is to use the number on a verified notice. The IRS Letter 725-B page specifically identifies 800-829-1040 when that letter is missing from the search or appears suspicious; do not treat it as a universal line for every tax issue.
Can the IRS call after sending a letter?
Yes. The IRS generally starts with mail, but an agent may call after a notice to confirm an appointment or discuss a scheduled audit. A threat of an arrest warrant, an immediate-payment demand or an unrelated request for sensitive information is a scam warning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if I disagree with a genuine IRS notice?
Follow the notice’s dispute or appeal instructions and deadline. Send the requested explanation and supporting records through the stated channel, keep copies and retain proof of mailing or upload. Calling alone does not necessarily pause a deadline.
The Bottom Line
Verify first, then use the number on the genuine notice. If anything looks suspicious, stop using the letter’s links, QR code and contact details; go to IRS.gov yourself, confirm the issue through your IRS Online Account or notice lookup, report the scheme through the appropriate IRS channel and preserve every record.
