The biggest video game publisher by revenue is not automatically the strongest investment. Revenue measures scale, bookings show customer purchasing activity, margins reveal cost discipline, and a release pipeline indicates how much future revenue depends on launches that have not happened yet.
A useful comparison therefore puts each company on the same fiscal-period and accounting basis, separates recurring spending from launch sales, adjusts for unusual charges such as impairments, and tests whether the next two years of releases are broad enough to absorb a delay or a failed hit.

Set a comparable basis before comparing publishers
Start by fixing the period, currency, consolidation scope and accounting definitions. Electronic Arts reports on a fiscal year ending March 31, while a calendar-year publisher’s December 31 results cover a different operating season. A holiday launch can fall into different annual periods even when two companies sell similar games. Put the fiscal-year end beside every figure and do not rank companies from mismatched periods without a date bridge.

Revenue and net bookings answer different questions
Net revenue is accounting revenue recognized during the period. Net bookings measure customer purchases and other contracted sales during the period, subject to the publisher’s definition and revenue-recognition rules. Take-Two defines net bookings to include digital and physical products, licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, strategy guides and publisher incentives.
Bookings can be above or below revenue because a purchase may be recognized over time, deferred to a later period, refunded, or recognized before or after the related booking. Treat the gap as a timing and mix signal, not as proof that one measure is “real” and the other is not.
Keep reported and adjusted results separate
Reported operating income includes the accounting charges recorded in the period. A normalized operating view can add back a clearly identified unusual item, but only after reading the reconciliation and deciding whether the cost is genuinely non-recurring. Goodwill impairment, acquisition-related amortization, restructuring, stock compensation and capitalized development costs each require different treatment. Present both views rather than replacing the reported result with an adjustment that management has not reconciled.

Net revenue: scale and recognition
Revenue is useful for judging the size of a publisher’s recognized business and for calculating margins. It is not a direct measure of player engagement or cash collected. A publisher with a large annual release can show a revenue spike, while a live-service publisher may recognize spending over several months.
Net bookings: demand during the period
Bookings are closer to the purchase decision. Compare bookings growth with revenue growth and ask whether the difference comes from deferred digital content, subscription arrangements, physical sell-in, refunds or a change in the publisher’s definition. Never compare a company’s bookings with another company’s billings unless both definitions are equivalent.
Gross margin: economics after direct costs
Calculate gross margin as gross profit divided by net revenue. It shows what remains after costs assigned to cost of goods sold, including platform fees, distribution and other direct costs recorded by the publisher. A high gross margin does not guarantee a high operating margin: development, marketing, research, support and corporate costs sit below gross profit.

Operating margin: the cost of running the portfolio
Operating margin equals operating income divided by net revenue. It captures the recurring cost of building and marketing games as well as unusual operating charges. Read the notes for impairment, restructuring, acquisition amortization and other items before deciding whether a low margin reflects the underlying pipeline or a one-time accounting event.

Operating cash flow and free cash flow show whether reported earnings turn into cash after working-capital movements and investment. A publisher can report profit while funding a large slate of games, or report an accounting loss while generating cash because an impairment does not require a current-period cash payment. Cash flow should be a separate line in your comparison rather than inferred from revenue or bookings.
FY2025 snapshot: Electronic Arts and Take-Two
The figures below illustrate a consistent comparison using the FY2025 information available for the two publishers. Values remain in each company’s reported currency. “Not stated” means the cited FY2025 results did not provide a comparable figure; it is not an estimate.
| Publisher | Fiscal period | Net revenue | Net bookings | Gross margin | Operating-result context | Revenue-quality indicators | Pipeline evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electronic Arts | FY2025, fiscal year ending March 31 | $7.463 billion | $7.355 billion | Not stated in the cited FY2025 results | Use the annual filing for reported and adjusted operating income | Mix percentages not stated in the cited FY2025 results | FY2024 reporting cited 11 titles and more than 600 content updates; Battlefield and skate were identified as pipeline franchises |
| Take-Two Interactive | FY2025, annual Form 10-K period | $5,633.6 million | $5,648.0 million | 54.3% ($3,062.2 million gross profit) | Goodwill impairment of $3,545.2 million drove a reported operating loss; show a separate normalized view only with a documented reconciliation | Recurrent consumer spending was 79.4% of revenue; mobile 52.2%; digital online channels 96.4% | FY2025 releases included NBA 2K25, TopSpin 2K25, Civilization VII, PGA TOUR 2K25, WWE 2K25 and Game of Thrones: Legends; Grand Theft Auto VI was planned for May 26, 2026 |
Take-Two’s gross profit divided by revenue produces the reported 54.3% gross margin. Its bookings exceeded revenue by $14.4 million, or about 0.3% of revenue, a small difference that should be interpreted in light of recognition timing rather than treated as additional profit. Electronic Arts’ bookings were $108 million below revenue, about 1.4% of revenue; the same timing and definition checks apply.
Electronic Arts CFO Stuart Canfield described the period this way: “Q4 marked a strong finish to FY25, with broad-based momentum across the portfolio positioning the business for accelerated growth.” That statement is management’s characterization of momentum, not a substitute for the reported revenue, bookings, margin and cash-flow data.

How to normalize margins without hiding the real result
1. Start with the reported operating margin
Divide reported operating income or loss by net revenue. Preserve the sign: an operating loss produces a negative margin. This is the result shareholders received under the applicable accounting rules.

2. Identify material below-gross-profit charges
- Goodwill impairment: an evaluation that acquired goodwill is worth less than its carrying amount. Take-Two recorded $3,545.2 million in FY2025, large enough to dominate its operating result.
- Acquisition-related amortization: expense from finite-lived intangible assets recognized after an acquisition.
- Restructuring: severance, facility closures or other reorganization costs that management identifies separately.
- Stock compensation: employee compensation recognized through the income statement; it may be non-cash in the period but still represents an economic cost to shareholders.
- Capitalized development: costs carried on the balance sheet and amortized later, which can move expense between periods.
3. Build a documented normalized view
For each adjustment, record the amount, the note or reconciliation where it appears, and the reason it is considered unusual. Then calculate:
Normalized operating margin = (reported operating income + selected one-time adjustments) ÷ net revenue
Do not add back routine annual restructuring, recurring launch marketing or development spending simply because it is large. A publisher’s ability to fund those costs is part of its business model. If management does not provide a reconciliation, label your calculation as an analyst estimate and keep it beside—not instead of—the reported margin.
Read revenue quality through spending and platform mix
Separate recurring consumer spending from full-game launches. Recurring spending includes virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and advertising. It tends to depend on retention, active players and a steady cadence of content updates. Full-game sales are more launch-driven and can create larger quarter-to-quarter swings.
Take-Two reported that recurrent consumer spending represented 79.4% of FY2025 revenue. Mobile accounted for 52.2%, and digital online channels represented 96.4%. Those percentages describe a business shaped by digital distribution and ongoing player spending. They do not prove that every mobile or recurrent-spending dollar is higher margin; platform fees, user-acquisition costs and content-support expenses still matter.
Questions to ask about platform mix
- What percentage of revenue and bookings comes from mobile, console and PC?
- Is growth coming from price, new users, more spending per user, or a shift toward a different platform?
- How much revenue is recurring consumer spending versus new-release sales?
- Are digital channels expanding faster than physical sales, and are platform fees changing the gross margin?
- Does the company disclose active users, retention or average revenue per user in a way that can be compared across years?
Use the same definitions each year. A change in the company’s classification can make a mix percentage appear to move even when player behavior has not changed.

Evaluate the game pipeline as an operating asset
A pipeline is not just a list of announced titles. It is the sequence of launches and content updates that must replace aging games, support revenue between launches and create future bookings. Evaluate each item by expected release window, franchise, platform, development ownership, evidence of production progress and commercial importance. If a company does not disclose one of those fields, leave it out rather than inventing a confidence level.

Release cadence
Count meaningful launches by fiscal year and identify whether they cluster in the holiday quarter. A publisher with one major launch can post strong annual growth but carry greater delay risk than one with several medium-sized releases. Annual sports cycles provide cadence, yet they also create dependence on a small set of licensed franchises.
Content-update capacity
Live-service games require a content calendar, not just a launch date. Electronic Arts reported 11 titles and more than 600 content updates in FY2024. Treat that figure as evidence of update volume in that fiscal year, not as a forecast for FY2025 or later. Investigate how many updates were major expansions, seasonal events or routine maintenance before comparing their economic weight.
Franchise durability and diversity
Map each announced title to a franchise and platform. A diversified slate can include sports, role-playing, strategy, action, mobile and licensed games, but nominal genre variety is not enough if most revenue still comes from one or two brands. Look for different launch windows, audience segments and monetization models.
Known releases and timing signals
| Publisher | Titles or pipeline item | Timing information | How to use the evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take-Two Interactive | NBA 2K25; TopSpin 2K25; Civilization VII; PGA TOUR 2K25; WWE 2K25; Game of Thrones: Legends | Reported as FY2025 releases | Shows a mix of annual sports, established franchises and a licensed mobile title within one fiscal year |
| Take-Two Interactive | Grand Theft Auto VI | Planned for May 26, 2026 | Flag as a high-impact, date-sensitive launch; recheck the date and platform details before publication or investment decisions |
| Electronic Arts | Battlefield; skate | Identified as pipeline items; the cited material does not provide launch dates | Record the franchises without assigning a release probability or fiscal-year contribution |
Release dates and outlooks are volatile. A planned date is not a shipment, and an announced game can be delayed, cancelled or commercially repositioned. Refresh the pipeline table whenever the publisher files a new annual report, earnings release or material release-date announcement.
Measure concentration and downside risk
Concentration risk asks how much damage one delayed or unsuccessful game could do. Start with the largest franchises’ share of revenue or bookings if the company discloses it. If it does not, use a qualitative flag and avoid manufacturing a percentage.

Concentration checklist
- Identify the top franchises and the fiscal periods in which they supplied revenue.
- Separate annual sports cycles from evergreen live services and occasional blockbusters.
- Check whether one title supplies a disproportionate share of bookings, recurrent spending or marketing attention.
- Stress-test a one-year delay, a weak launch and a shorter-than-expected live-service tail.
- Review dependence on licenses, platform policies, online infrastructure and regulatory approvals.
Take-Two’s risk disclosures specifically cite dependence on NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto, timely release, market acceptance and management of development and marketing costs. Those disclosures do not predict failure; they identify the variables that deserve the largest sensitivity range.
A practical risk score
For each publisher, score three dimensions from low to high using disclosed evidence: single-title exposure, release-timing exposure and live-operations execution. A pipeline dominated by one blockbuster receives a higher single-title and timing score. A broad slate with frequent updates may reduce launch concentration but increase the execution burden of supporting many products. Keep the score qualitative unless the company publishes enough data for a defensible percentage.
Build an apples-to-apples comparison sheet
- Set the period: write each fiscal-year end, currency and consolidation scope in the first row.
- Capture scale: enter net revenue and the publisher’s definition of net bookings.
- Calculate margins: gross margin and reported operating margin from the same annual period.
- List adjustments: record goodwill or intangible impairments, restructuring, acquisition amortization, stock compensation and capitalized-development effects.
- Add cash checks: include operating cash flow, capital spending and free cash flow when disclosed.
- Split revenue quality: enter recurrent consumer spending, mobile, console, PC and digital-channel shares with their definitions.
- Map the pipeline: list announced titles, expected windows, franchises, platforms and evidence of production progress.
- Stress-test concentration: identify the largest franchises and model a delay or weak launch without treating the scenario as a forecast.
Keep a source note beside every number. When a value comes from a quarterly release rather than the annual filing, label it clearly and do not merge it into a full-year table without a reconciliation.
How to interpret the two FY2025 examples
Electronic Arts was larger by reported FY2025 revenue and bookings: $7.463 billion of revenue and $7.355 billion of bookings. That establishes scale for the period, not superior profitability or pipeline quality, because the cited results do not provide a directly comparable gross-margin figure or platform-mix percentages.
Take-Two was smaller by revenue but supplied more detail about revenue quality: 79.4% recurrent consumer spending, 52.2% mobile and 96.4% digital online. Its 54.3% gross margin indicates substantial revenue remaining after direct costs. However, the $3,545.2 million goodwill impairment overwhelmed operating performance, so a fair analysis must show the reported loss and then, only with a documented reconciliation, an adjusted view.
The pipeline comparison is also different in character. Take-Two’s FY2025 list demonstrates multiple releases, but the planned May 26, 2026 launch of Grand Theft Auto VI creates an obvious date and concentration sensitivity. Electronic Arts’ 11-title and 600-plus-update FY2024 figures show release and support capacity, while Battlefield and skate provide named future franchises without disclosed dates in the cited material. Neither set of facts alone proves which publisher will deliver better returns.
Common comparison mistakes
- Ranking revenue as quality: scale can come from low-margin distribution, acquisitions or a different revenue-recognition mix.
- Mixing fiscal years: a March 31 year and a December 31 year capture different holiday and launch schedules.
- Calling bookings profit: bookings are purchases under the company’s definition, not gross profit or cash earnings.
- Ignoring impairments: a goodwill charge can dominate operating income and must be shown rather than silently removed.
- Adding back every large expense: recurring development, marketing and live-service support are necessary operating costs.
- Counting announcements as output: an announced game has no realized revenue until it ships and is accepted by players.
- Treating update counts as equal: a major expansion and a routine event are not economically interchangeable.
- Assuming digital means risk-free: digital businesses still face platform fees, user-acquisition costs, moderation, server expense and retention risk.
- Using a stale pipeline: dates, platforms and strategic priorities can change between filings.
A decision framework for readers and investors
Use a four-part conclusion rather than a single winner:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Scale: Which publisher has the larger comparable revenue and bookings base?
- Economics: Which has the stronger gross and operating margins after clearly identified adjustments?
- Quality: How much revenue is recurring, digital and diversified across platforms and franchises?
- Execution: Is the pipeline broad and supported by content updates, or does one launch determine the next period?
Then write the downside case in one sentence: name the title, cycle or accounting item that would most change your conclusion. For Take-Two, that exercise naturally centers on the timing and reception of major franchises and the effect of impairment charges. For Electronic Arts, it requires the annual filing’s margin, cash-flow and franchise-concentration disclosures before making a profitability ranking.
The resulting comparison is more informative than a league table. It tells you whether a publisher’s growth is launch-driven or recurring, whether a strong gross margin survives operating costs, and how much future performance depends on a release that has not yet shipped.
