To compare grocery deals, divide each package’s actual price by the amount it contains, then compare the results using the same unit. A $4.80 package containing 24 ounces costs $0.20 per ounce ($4.80 ÷ 24). The package with the lower comparable unit price usually costs less for the same amount of product.
Do not assume the largest package is the best bargain. Check that the products have comparable quality and formulation, confirm the price you will really pay after sale conditions or coupons, and consider whether your household will use the quantity before it spoils or is wasted.

What a unit price tells you
A unit price expresses the cost of one standard quantity of a product: dollars per ounce, dollars per pound, dollars per fluid ounce, dollars per liter, dollars per item, or another appropriate basis. It removes package-size differences so a 12-ounce container can be compared with a 24-ounce container.
The basic calculation is:
Unit price = item price ÷ package quantity
The result is meaningful only when the two products are genuinely comparable and the units match. Unit pricing measures the cost of the stated quantity. It does not by itself measure taste, ingredients, quality, usable yield, convenience, or the amount your household will actually consume.

Calculate unit price yourself
Use the package price and net quantity
- Find the total price you will pay, not a pre-discount price that does not apply to your purchase.
- Read the package’s net quantity. Use weight for products sold by weight, volume for products sold by volume, and count for products sold by number.
- Divide the price by that quantity.
- Round both options to the same number of decimal places so a small difference is not hidden by inconsistent rounding.
For example, a $4.80 package containing 24 ounces costs $0.20 per ounce. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a current market price.
Worked comparison: two cereal boxes

On unit price alone, the larger box is cheaper per ounce. It is the better mathematical deal only if the cereal is comparable and you can use the extra amount before it becomes stale or otherwise unusable.
Use a calculator when the numbers are awkward
A phone calculator, the calculator on a store website, or handwritten division is sufficient. Enter the price first, press divide, enter the quantity, and label the answer with its unit. Keep the original figures visible so you can check that you did not divide by the number of servings, a promotional quantity, or the wrong ounce measurement.
Read the unit price on a shelf label or online listing
Find the secondary price
Many shelf tags show a large selling price and a smaller unit price near it. An online listing may place the unit price below the headline price, in a product-details area, or beside the package size. Compare the unit-price lines only after confirming that each uses the same basis.
Check that the units match
A label showing $0.32 per ounce cannot be compared directly with one showing $5.10 per pound. Convert one value to the other before deciding. For weight, one pound contains 16 ounces, so a price per pound can be divided by 16 to express it per ounce. Do not compare a weight ounce with a fluid ounce: weight measures mass, while a fluid ounce measures volume. The appropriate unit depends on how the product is labeled and sold.
If one product is priced per liter and another per milliliter, convert them to a common unit. The same principle applies to gallons and fluid ounces, feet and inches, square feet and square yards, or count-based packages. NIST’s NIST SP 1181 Unit Pricing Guide (2025 Ed.) recommends consistent units that are familiar, helpful, and meaningful to consumers.

Verify the package quantity
Do not rely on a picture or a product name. Read the net quantity printed on the package or in the listing. Two containers that look the same can have different fill amounts, and a multipack may show both the number of units and the total quantity. Use the quantity that corresponds to the price being displayed.

A lower unit price is useful only when the products deliver a comparable purchase. Before choosing, check these four dimensions:
- Product type: Compare the same kind of item, such as regular pasta with regular pasta rather than pasta with a prepared meal.
- Quality and formulation: Organic, specialty, premium, reduced-sodium, concentrated, or otherwise different formulations may not be interchangeable for your needs.
- Usable content: A product with shells, bones, peels, brine, or another nonusable portion may provide less usable food than its stated net quantity suggests.
- Actual payable price: Include the sale price, required membership, minimum quantity, coupon, rebate, or other condition that determines what you will pay.
If a lower-priced item does not meet the same need, its lower unit price is not a true bargain for your shopping list. Unit price is a comparison tool, not a substitute for deciding what product you want.
Why a bigger package may not be the better deal
Larger packages often have a lower unit price, but size alone proves nothing. A store can price a large package at a higher per-ounce rate, and a smaller package can be discounted more aggressively.
For each size, calculate or read the unit price independently. Then ask whether you will use the entire package. Spoilage, staleness, freezer space, storage limits, and a household’s normal consumption can erase the apparent savings. If half of a large package is discarded, the effective cost of the food you used is higher than the shelf unit price.
A larger package can also carry a condition such as “buy two,” a member price, or a digital coupon. If you do not satisfy the condition, the advertised unit price may not be the amount charged at checkout.

Handle sales, coupons, and promotions correctly
Use the price that applies to your transaction
Write down the regular price and the qualifying sale price when both appear. If a coupon reduces the price, subtract the coupon only when you meet its terms. For a “two for” promotion, determine whether one item can be purchased at the same per-item price or whether buying the stated number is required.
Recalculate after a discount
If a $6 package receives a $1 discount, the relevant unit-price calculation is $5 divided by the package quantity, provided you qualify for the discount. Do not compare one product’s discounted price with another product’s regular price unless that is the choice you will actually make.
Check digital and loyalty conditions
Online and electronic labels can display a member price while your account is not signed in, or show a coupon that must be clipped before checkout. Confirm the final cart price and the quantity required. NIST’s 2025 guide addresses sale and e-commerce presentation as a labeling best practice; its recommendations do not guarantee that every retailer’s display is accurate.
Weight ounces and fluid ounces are not interchangeable
“Ounce” can describe mass or volume. Flour, rice, meat, and other products commonly use weight ounces. Beverages, sauces, detergents, and other liquids may use fluid ounces. A price per ounce by weight and a price per fluid ounce cannot be compared without product-specific information that relates mass to volume.
Stay within one category: compare weight with weight, volume with volume, and count with count. If the store uses different but convertible units, convert both labels to the same basis before dividing or ranking them. If conversion would require assumptions about density or usable yield, treat the packages as not directly comparable rather than inventing a precise result.
Consider practical value, not just the shelf number
Estimate how much you will use
Suppose a family uses about one box of a product every two weeks. A warehouse-size package may have a lower unit price but still be wasteful if it goes stale before the next use. A smaller package with a slightly higher unit price can cost less in practice when it prevents discarded food.

Account for preparation and usable yield
Concentrates, products sold with liquid, and foods with inedible parts can produce different amounts of usable product. Compare the same preparation state when possible. If one package requires adding water and another is ready to use, the printed quantity may not represent the same finished amount.

Single-serve portions, pre-cut produce, and prepared ingredients can cost more per unit while saving time. Unit price makes that premium visible; it does not tell you whether the convenience is worth paying for. Make that decision separately from the arithmetic.
A step-by-step method for shopping in a store
- Define the item you need. Decide the acceptable type, formulation, size, and quality before looking at prices.
- Collect comparable options. Record each package’s total price and net quantity, or photograph the shelf tags so you can check them without guessing.
- Standardize the unit. Convert pounds to ounces, liters to milliliters, or another basis when necessary. Keep weight and volume separate.
- Calculate or read each unit price. Use price ÷ quantity, and write the unit next to every result.
- Apply promotion rules. Recalculate using the price you qualify for, including any required quantity or membership.
- Check freshness and storage. Reject a larger package if you are unlikely to use it before quality declines or the product spoils.
- Choose the lowest practical cost. Select the lowest comparable unit price that fits your product requirements and expected use.
How to compare products in an online cart
Online shopping adds extra opportunities for mismatches. Open the complete product details rather than relying on the search-result thumbnail. Confirm the package count, net weight or volume, shipping or delivery charges that apply to the order, and whether the shown price requires a subscription or membership.
When a listing shows a unit price, verify that it is based on the same quantity as the competing listing. A multipack can display a per-item figure while another listing displays a per-ounce figure. Convert both to a common basis. If the listing omits a unit price, calculate it from the displayed price and net quantity.
Save the cart or checkout screen when a digital coupon changes the price. Prices and promotions can change between product selection and payment, so the checkout total is the decisive figure for a current purchase.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Make unit-price labels easier to use
Unit prices can be difficult to spot when they are printed in tiny type, placed far from the total price, or presented with different units across neighboring products. NIST’s June 2025 guide recommends clear, readable presentation, a blocked layout, the largest practical font, and consistent measurement units. These are best practices, not proof that every retailer follows them.

If a shelf label appears inconsistent with the package quantity or checkout price, ask an employee to verify it before paying. Keep the receipt when the discrepancy affects a substantial purchase. The unit-price figure is only as reliable as the underlying price and quantity.
What U.S. rules require—and what they do not
There is no nationwide shelf-label mandate
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Office of Weights and Measures states in NIST SP 1181 Unit Pricing Guide (2025 Ed.), dated June 2025: “There is no federal mandate that requires unit pricing.” The guide reports that laws or regulations were in effect in 16 states and three territories at the time of publication. That is a publication-dated snapshot, not a permanent count.
State and territorial requirements can differ by retailer, product category, display method, and exemption. When you need a legal answer about a particular store or jurisdiction, consult that jurisdiction’s current weights-and-measures authority. A separate NIST state-law overview updated July 31, 2024, lists 10 jurisdictions with mandatory provisions and nine with voluntary provisions; its earlier date is one reason not to treat that list as a current nationwide tally.

Package quantity labeling is a separate requirement
The Federal Trade Commission’s summary of the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act explains that covered consumer commodities must identify the commodity, the responsible business, and the net quantity, stated by weight, measure, or count in metric and inch-pound units. The Act helps consumers make value comparisons, but it is not a universal requirement that every grocery shelf display a unit price.
A quick decision checklist
- Are the products the same kind and a suitable quality or formulation match?
- Are both quantities measured in the same type of unit?
- Did you use net quantity rather than container size or servings?
- Did you calculate from the price you will actually pay?
- Do sale, coupon, membership, or minimum-quantity conditions apply?
- Will you use the amount before it spoils, goes stale, or becomes inconvenient to store?
- Does a difference in usable yield or preparation change the practical value?
When all seven answers are clear, compare the resulting unit prices. The lower figure identifies the lower stated cost for the comparable quantity; your final choice should also reflect how much of that quantity you can realistically use.
