The fairest way to compare UltraTech Cement with ACC or another cement stock is to build a quarter-by-quarter scorecard using the same consolidation basis, then compare revenue and volume growth, EBITDA or PBIDT per tonne, operating margin, capacity utilisation, costs, leverage and capacity additions. Raw revenue is a poor first ranking because UltraTech is much larger. Per-tonne profitability and the direction of utilisation usually reveal more about operating quality.
For the latest completed quarter in the available FY26 data, UltraTech reported Q4 FY26 net sales of ₹25,467 crore, PBIDT of ₹5,688 crore, operating PBIDT per tonne of ₹1,253 and 89% capacity utilisation. ACC reported Q4 FY26 cement volume of 11.9 million tonnes, operating EBITDA of ₹627 crore, EBITDA per tonne of ₹525, an 8.8% operating margin and about 80% utilisation. Those figures are useful starting points, but they are not a complete verdict until you reconcile definitions, geography, acquisitions, capacity additions and exceptional items.

What a like-for-like quarterly comparison should measure
A cement scorecard should answer six questions in order: Is demand growing? Is the company converting each tonne into profit? Are plants running efficiently? Are power, fuel and freight costs under control? Can the balance sheet fund expansion? And is the reported change caused by the underlying business or by an acquisition, divestment, accounting scheme or new kiln?

| Question | Primary metrics | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is demand expanding? | Consolidated revenue growth, cement sales volume growth, price and mix commentary | Separates more tonnes sold from higher prices or premium products. |
| Is each tonne profitable? | EBITDA/PBIDT per tonne and operating margin | Removes much of the distortion created by different company sizes. |
| Are assets being used well? | Capacity utilisation and commissioned capacity | Shows demand capture, while indicating whether new capacity will dilute utilisation. |
| Are costs competitive? | Power and fuel cost, freight cost, alternative-fuel rate and green-power share | Energy and logistics are major variable and semi-variable costs in cement. |
| Is growth financially safe? | Net debt/EBITDA, capex, operating cash flow and announced capacity | High returns can be weakened by excessive borrowing or a large construction pipeline. |
| Is the comparison genuinely comparable? | Consolidation perimeter, geography, product mix and exceptional items | Prevents a structural difference from being mistaken for superior execution. |
Step 1: Fix the comparison perimeter before collecting numbers
Start with the same quarter, currency and consolidation basis for every company. For an India-focused comparison, use consolidated results if one company includes subsidiaries, international operations or acquired businesses in its headline figures. Do not compare UltraTech’s consolidated PBIDT with a peer’s standalone EBITDA and call the difference an operating advantage.
Write the perimeter at the top of the worksheet: “Q4 FY26, quarter ended 31 March 2026, consolidated, reported; normalized figures shown separately.” If a company restates the prior period after a scheme or acquisition, retain the restated base and explain what changed.
Reported versus normalized results
Keep reported profit and normalized profit in separate columns. Reported figures are what the issuer booked under its accounting rules. Normalized figures remove clearly identified one-off effects, but only when the issuer explains the adjustment. Do not create your own “normalized” number by silently excluding a cost you dislike.

It also notes that some YoY comparisons exclude India Cements and Kesoram because those businesses were not part of UltraTech for the full prior period. Mark those comparisons as perimeter-affected rather than treating them as clean organic growth.
Step 2: Capture growth in both rupees and tonnes
Revenue
Record consolidated net sales and calculate YoY and sequential growth:
Revenue growth (%) = (current-quarter revenue ÷ comparable-quarter revenue − 1) × 100
Revenue can rise because of higher cement prices, more tonnes, a richer product mix, currency movements or an acquisition. Read the revenue line alongside volume and per-tonne realization. If revenue rises while volume is flat, price or mix is doing the work. If volume rises but revenue barely moves, pricing may be weakening.

Use cement sales volume rather than only production volume when available. Sales volume reflects demand capture; production can rise while inventory builds. Keep units consistent—million tonnes (Mt) is practical for large groups—and identify whether the figure covers grey cement, white cement, clinker or a broader portfolio.
For UltraTech, the FY26 scale indicator is 145.0 Mt of India grey-cement volume. In Q4 FY26, the company reported India grey-cement sales volume of 42.41 Mt and 89% capacity utilisation. The supplied figures do not state UltraTech’s Q4 YoY volume growth, so do not infer it from the annual number.

ACC reported Q4 FY26 cement volume of 11.9 Mt. Its FY26 volume was 43.9 Mt. A quarterly-to-annual comparison is a context check, not a substitute for a proper YoY quarter comparison.
Step 3: Rank profitability per tonne, not just total profit
EBITDA or PBIDT per tonne
Calculate operating profit per tonne using the issuer’s operating profit measure and the matching cement volume:
Operating profit per tonne = operating EBITDA or PBIDT ÷ cement sales volume
UltraTech calls the measure operating PBIDT per tonne and reported ₹1,253 in Q4 FY26. ACC reported EBITDA per tonne of ₹525 for the same quarter. These numbers show a large difference in the companies’ reported operating profit per tonne, but PBIDT and EBITDA labels are not automatically identical. Check each release’s definition, scope and volume denominator before making a precise ranking.
Per-tonne figures can be distorted if the numerator includes businesses that are not in the denominator—for example, international operations, ready-mix concrete or other products. Use a segment-specific measure when an issuer provides one; otherwise, label the comparison as group-level rather than pure cement economics.
Operating margin
Operating margin is a cross-check on per-tonne profitability:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOperating margin (%) = operating EBITDA or PBIDT ÷ revenue × 100
UltraTech’s Q4 FY26 operating margin was 22%. ACC’s was 8.8%. A margin gap can reflect price realization, fuel and power costs, freight distance, premium-product mix, accounting scope or integration effects. It is not proof that one company has permanently lower costs.
Profit after tax
PAT is useful for the shareholder outcome, but it is further down the income statement and includes depreciation, finance costs, tax and exceptional items. UltraTech reported Q4 FY26 normalized PAT of ₹3,011 crore, compared with ₹2,484 crore in Q4 FY25. In Q3 FY26, it reported normalized PAT of ₹1,792 crore. Keep normalized PAT beside, not instead of, operating metrics.

UltraTech’s FY26 quarterly reference points

Q4 FY26 quarter ended 31 Mar 2026 |
Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated net sales | ₹21,506 crore | ₹25,467 crore | Reported figures from the respective UltraTech releases. |
| PBIDT | ₹4,051 crore | ₹5,688 crore | Operating measure; preserve the issuer’s terminology. |
| Normalized PAT | ₹1,792 crore | ₹3,011 crore | Normalized, not the same as reported PAT. |
| Operating profit per tonne | ₹1,051, excluding India Cements | ₹1,253 | Q3 exclusion must remain attached to the number. |
| Capacity utilisation | 77% overall | 89% | Different scope labels; verify the denominator in each release. |
| India grey-cement sales volume | Not stated | 42.41 Mt | Q4 figure is India grey cement, not automatically a global group volume. |
The movement from Q3 to Q4 is a sequential improvement in the reported UltraTech figures, but quarter-to-quarter seasonality and the different scope of the Q3 per-tonne figure mean it should not be presented as a clean organic trend without further reconciliation.

ACC as a directly comparable peer example
| Metric | ACC Q4 FY26 | ACC FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Cement volume | 11.9 Mt | 43.9 Mt |
| Revenue | ₹7,146 crore | ₹25,962 crore |
| Operating EBITDA | ₹627 crore | ₹2,950 crore |
| EBITDA per tonne | ₹525 | ₹672 |
| Operating margin | 8.8% | Not stated |
| Capacity utilisation | About 80% | Not stated |
ACC Whole-Time Director and CEO Vinod Bahety described the quarter this way: “Amidst, the global volatility and energy cost pressures, we have delivered a sustained performance this quarter and during this fiscal, supported by strong brand penetration and disciplined execution across our operations.” Treat the statement as management commentary; test it against the cost, margin, volume and utilisation columns.
UltraTech’s and ACC’s Q4 numbers illustrate why scale and efficiency must be separated. UltraTech’s ₹25,467 crore of net sales is more than ACC’s ₹7,146 crore, but revenue size mostly reflects the size of the asset base. The per-tonne and margin measures are more informative for operating comparison, while utilisation indicates how much available capacity each company is using.
Step 4: Interpret utilisation together with new capacity
Capacity utilisation is cement produced or sold relative to available capacity, depending on the issuer’s definition. A high rate generally indicates strong demand capture, but it can also signal a tight network approaching a need for expansion. A low rate may reflect weak demand, temporary shutdowns, maintenance, ramp-up of a new plant or an unusually high denominator after commissioning.
UltraTech reported 89% utilisation in Q4 FY26; ACC reported about 80%. Do not award points mechanically. Ask whether either company commissioned capacity during the quarter or changed the calculation perimeter. UltraTech’s FY26 scale indicators include 200.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of domestic grey-cement capacity after April 2026 additions and 205.5 MTPA of global capacity including international operations. Because those additions came after the March quarter, they belong in the forward-looking capacity column, not as Q4 FY26 operating capacity unless the issuer says otherwise.
Two opposite signals to watch
- High utilisation, weak EBITDA per tonne: demand is present, but pricing, fuel, power, freight or mix may be pressuring economics.
- Low utilisation, strong EBITDA per tonne: premium products, favourable geography or temporary pricing may be supporting profit; test whether the result persists as volumes normalize.
- New capacity plus unchanged volume: the denominator rises before demand catches up, so utilisation can fall even while absolute sales remain stable.
- New capacity plus strong volume growth: the expansion may be filling quickly, but verify ramp-up costs and capital spending.
Step 5: Add the cost stack
Power and fuel
Track power and fuel cost per tonne or as a percentage of revenue when the company discloses it. Fuel prices, petcoke and coal mix, captive power, waste-heat recovery and renewable contracts can move margins independently of selling prices. Record whether the quarter benefited from a temporary input-cost decline.
Freight and logistics
Freight cost depends on lead distance, rail-versus-road mix, distribution centers and the location of new capacity relative to demand. A company with a higher freight bill may still earn more per tonne if it secures better prices or premium mix. Compare freight per tonne and the geographic mix rather than assuming the lowest rupee figure is always best.
Alternative fuel and green power
Alternative-fuel rates and green-power share indicate structural cost and carbon advantages, but they may require upfront investment. Record the percentage, the period measured and whether it applies to clinker plants, cement plants or the consolidated group. Do not treat a higher green-power share as an immediate margin winner without checking capital costs and utilization of the equipment.
Step 6: Check leverage, cash and capex
Net debt/EBITDA is a compact leverage test:
Net debt/EBITDA = (total debt − cash and equivalents) ÷ trailing or issuer-defined EBITDA

UltraTech’s net debt/EBITDA was 0.94x at 31 March 2026. Keep the date and denominator with the ratio; a quarter-end balance-sheet figure is not interchangeable with a forecast ratio. Add operating cash flow, interest cost, maintenance capex and expansion capex where disclosed. A company can report excellent EBITDA per tonne while consuming cash on a large construction program.
Capacity announcements should be split into three statuses: announced, under construction and commissioned. Only commissioned capacity should affect the current utilisation denominator when the issuer includes it. Announced capacity is a future opportunity and a future funding requirement, not present output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Account for portfolio and geography
Compare trade and non-trade sales, premium products, ready-mix or other businesses, regional exposure and international operations. A coastal plant serving export markets has a different freight profile from an inland plant serving a dense domestic market. A premium product mix can lift EBITDA per tonne even when total volume growth is modest.
Acquisitions require a bridge: show the reported group result, the acquired business’s contribution if disclosed, and an organic comparison only when management provides a credible basis. UltraTech’s India Cements and Kesoram references demonstrate why a simple YoY percentage can combine business growth with a changing perimeter.

A practical quarterly scorecard
Use one row per company and one column per metric. Keep the raw number, the YoY change, the sequential change and a short qualification in the same worksheet. The following layout prevents a high-level ranking from hiding an accounting or perimeter issue.
| Category | Column to capture | Required note |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | Revenue; YoY %; QoQ % | Consolidated or standalone; reported or restated. |
| Demand | Cement sales volume; YoY %; QoQ % | Grey cement, total cement or another stated scope. |
| Profitability | EBITDA/PBIDT; per tonne; operating margin | Issuer definition and matching denominator. |
| Utilisation | Percentage and available capacity | Include plants commissioned during the period. |
| Costs | Power/fuel; freight; alternative fuel; green power | Per tonne, percentage or physical share, with period. |
| Balance sheet | Net debt/EBITDA; operating cash flow; capex | Quarter-end date and trailing-period definition. |
| Capacity | Announced, under construction, commissioned MTPA | State domestic, global and product scope. |
| Quality flags | Acquisition, scheme, exceptional item, geography | Do not score a flagged figure as clean organic performance. |
How to turn the scorecard into a decision
- Confirm comparability. Remove or separately flag rows with different consolidation, product or geographic scope.
- Assess demand. Give more weight to sustained volume growth than to a single quarter’s revenue jump.
- Test economics. Compare per-tonne profit and margin, then inspect power, fuel, freight and mix for the reason.
- Test capacity. Ask whether utilisation is rising on existing assets or merely reflecting a temporary denominator.
- Check resilience. Review leverage, cash generation and the funding required for announced capacity.
- Review at least four quarters. A single quarter can be distorted by seasonality, shutdowns, price changes or an acquisition.
Rather than awarding a simplistic “winner,” classify each company as stronger on growth, stronger on current per-tonne economics, stronger on balance-sheet flexibility or exposed to a specific risk. That conclusion is more useful for an investor than one composite score whose weights are hidden.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Using revenue as the main ranking
Problem: the largest producer wins automatically. Fix: put EBITDA/PBIDT per tonne and margin beside revenue, then explain the mix and cost drivers.
Mixing standalone and consolidated results
Problem: subsidiaries or international operations are counted for one company but not another. Fix: use the same basis or label the comparison explicitly as non-like-for-like.
Ignoring restatements and acquisitions
Problem: a reported YoY jump is mistaken for organic growth. Fix: use the issuer’s restated base and identify the months during which an acquired business was included.

Comparing PBIDT and EBITDA without checking definitions
Problem: similarly named measures may use different segment scopes or adjustments. Fix: quote the issuer’s label, denominator and reconciliation before ranking.
Treating capacity announcements as current output
Problem: future MTPA is added to the present denominator or treated as revenue already earned. Fix: separate announced, construction and commissioned capacity.
Repeating a one-off margin peak
Problem: a temporary fuel or pricing benefit is extrapolated. Fix: examine at least four quarters and identify the input-cost and realization drivers.

How often to update the analysis
Refresh the worksheet after each company’s exchange filing, not when all peers happen to publish on the same day. Freeze the quarter-end date, then update the peer rows as filings arrive. Recheck the latest release for changed segment definitions, restated comparatives, acquisitions, capacity commissioning and management’s explanation of exceptional items. If a later filing revises a prior quarter, preserve the original published value in an audit column and use the restated value for the current comparison.
The final page of the worksheet should show the date of every input, the unit used, whether the value is reported or normalized, and a short note for any perimeter change. This makes the next quarter’s update reproducible instead of requiring a fresh reconstruction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UltraTech’s ₹1,253 PBIDT per tonne directly comparable with ACC’s ₹525 EBITDA per tonne?
They are directionally useful operating measures, but not automatically identical. Confirm each issuer’s definition, segment scope and volume denominator; retain the labels PBIDT and EBITDA rather than silently treating them as one standardized metric.
Should I compare quarterly or annual cement metrics?
Use quarterly data to detect changes in pricing, costs and utilisation, then use the trailing four quarters or FY totals to smooth seasonality. Annual figures should validate the trend, not replace the quarter-by-quarter diagnosis.
How should a new cement plant affect the comparison?
Record announced, under-construction and commissioned capacity separately. Include a new plant in current utilisation only when the issuer’s denominator includes it, and flag the ramp-up period because fixed costs can depress early per-tonne profit.
What does a high utilisation rate with falling EBITDA per tonne indicate?
It usually points to pricing or mix pressure, higher power, fuel or freight costs, or an integration effect. Check those cost and realization lines before concluding that demand is weak.
Which filing should I use when a company restates the prior year?
Use the latest issuer filing’s restated comparative for the main YoY calculation, and note why the perimeter changed. Keep a separate column for the originally published number so the adjustment remains traceable.
