No. UK and US companies do not use one shared fiscal-year timetable. A company’s fiscal year, quarter boundaries and earnings-announcement date are issuer-specific in both countries. To compare them, first identify each issuer’s exact year-end and accounting convention, then align the underlying start and end dates, period lengths, reporting rules and time zones. Treat the regulatory filing deadline and the voluntary investor-relations earnings date as separate events.
What a fiscal year means in the UK and US
A fiscal year is the 12-month (or near-12-month) reporting cycle used to prepare a company’s annual accounts. It does not have to run from 1 January through 31 December. A company may choose a month-end date, a 52- or 53-week retail calendar, or another closing date that suits its operations.

Companies House describes a financial year as usually a 12-month period for which accounts are prepared. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) presumes 31 December only when an issuer has not adopted another closing date; an adopted fiscal year may end on a different date and may not exceed 12 months.
Consequently, labels such as “Q1,” “H1” and “FY” are shorthand, not comparable periods by themselves. Two companies can both report “Q1” while covering different months, different numbers of weeks or different economic conditions.

How UK companies set their fiscal year
Companies House accounting reference dates
A UK company’s statutory year is anchored to its accounting reference date (ARD). For a newly incorporated company, the first ARD is generally the last day of the month in which the incorporation anniversary falls. The company can prepare accounts to a date up to seven days before or after the end of the accounting reference period, so the date printed on accounts may not be exactly the nominal ARD.
For an established company, the ARD remains the recurring year-end unless it is changed. A year-end change can create a shortened or extended transition period, so the next “year” may cover less or more than 12 months. Record the actual beginning and ending dates rather than assuming four equal calendar quarters.
Statutory accounts versus tax accounting periods
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) uses a Corporation Tax accounting period. It normally matches the financial year in the annual accounts, but the concepts are not identical in every situation. A tax accounting period cannot be longer than 12 months and may be lengthened or shortened, for example when a company changes its year-end or enters a closing period.

UK reporting frameworks
The accounting framework is another comparison field. A UK issuer may disclose accounts under UK-adopted International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), UK accounting standards or another permitted basis, depending on its status and reporting obligations. Do not infer the framework from the company’s nationality; read the basis-of-preparation note in the relevant report.
How US companies set their fiscal year
Adopted year-end, not an assumed 31 December
US domestic issuers report the fiscal year-end they have adopted in their SEC filings. If no closing date has been adopted, SEC guidance presumes calendar year-end. Many companies therefore end on 31 December, but retailers and other seasonal businesses often use a 52- or 53-week calendar that closes on a particular weekday.
A 52/53-week year does not divide neatly into calendar months. Quarter lengths can alternate between 13 and 14 weeks, and a 53rd week may be added to one quarter in some years. The filing’s stated “fiscal year end” is the authoritative date for the issuer’s calendar.
US reporting frameworks
US companies commonly present financial statements under US generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP), while some issuers use another framework when permitted or required. Compare the accounting policy disclosures before treating revenue, profit or segment measures as directly equivalent to a UK issuer’s figures.

The fields to capture before comparing two issuers
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal-year end | Exact date and whether it is a calendar, month-end or 52/53-week year | Determines the annual comparison point and quarter sequence |
| Period start and end | Actual dates for each Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, H1 or H2 | Prevents misleading comparisons based only on labels |
| Period length | Number of days or weeks | Explains apparent growth or margin changes caused by an extra week or a short period |
| Transition period | Any shortened or extended year after a year-end change | A transition “Q1” may not represent a normal quarter |
| Reporting framework | For example, UK-adopted IFRS or US GAAP, as disclosed by the issuer | Definitions and measurement can differ |
| Regulatory deadline | Latest date for the annual report or periodic filing | This is a compliance deadline, not necessarily the earnings-release date |
| Investor-relations date | Company-announced results release, webcast or call date and time | This is the date investors usually mean by “earnings” |
| Time zone and trading day | Local time, daylight-saving status and market calendar | A release can fall on a different UTC date for an overseas reader |
A practical method for lining up UK and US periods
- Identify the legal issuer and document. Use the latest annual report, interim report and regulatory filing for the exact entity being compared. A parent and subsidiary can have different reporting dates.
- Write down the fiscal-year end. For a UK company, confirm the Companies House ARD and the date to which the accounts are made up. For a US issuer, read the SEC filing’s “Fiscal Year End” field instead of assuming 31 December.
- Capture the period boundaries. Record the first and last day of every three-month or six-month period. A US EDGAR record displays both “Fiscal Year End” and “Period of Report”; the period end and the filing date are different fields and should remain separate in your data.
- Calculate duration. Count calendar days or weeks and flag 52/53-week periods. Match three-month periods with three-month periods and six-month periods with six-month periods; do not compare a 13-week quarter with a 14-week quarter without explaining the difference.
- Check for a transition year. Look for a disclosed fiscal-year change, acquisition, disposal or closing period. A first period after a year-end change may be unusually short or long.
- Confirm the accounting basis. Read the statement-of-compliance note and use like-for-like measures where possible. If one issuer reports under UK-adopted IFRS and another under US GAAP, label the comparison and avoid implying that every line item is defined identically.
- Add the compliance deadline. Calculate the applicable UK annual-report or US periodic-filing deadline from the fiscal-year end and filer category. Keep this date separate from the company’s investor-relations announcement.
- Verify the live earnings event. Check the company’s investor-relations calendar and announcement. For a US issuer, confirm the filing in EDGAR; for a UK issuer, check the regulated-news announcement (often an RNS announcement) where applicable.
- Normalize time zones. Store the issuer’s local date and time, the UTC equivalent and whether the event is before or after the local market close. This avoids placing a late-evening US release on the wrong day in a UK calendar.
Why “Q1” is not a universal quarter
Suppose a UK issuer’s financial year ends on 30 September. Its illustrative Q1 could run from 1 October through 31 December, Q2 from 1 January through 31 March, Q3 from 1 April through 30 June and Q4 from 1 July through 30 September. A US issuer with a 31 December year-end would ordinarily use January–March, April–June, July–September and October–December instead. The two Q1 periods overlap only partly, so a direct “Q1 versus Q1” comparison would mix different months.
The example is a date-mapping exercise, not a rule that every UK issuer uses those boundaries. Confirm each issuer’s published dates. A company with a 52/53-week calendar may have quarter ends that move by a day or two each year, and a 53rd week can make one quarter longer than the others.
| Question | Correct comparison | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Are both periods three months? | Compare exact start and end dates and duration | Assume every Q1 contains the same months |
| Are both periods six months? | Match H1 with H1 only after checking boundaries | Compare a six-month UK H1 with a US nine-month year-to-date figure |
| Did either year-end change? | Flag the transition period and explain its length | Treat a short first period as a normal quarter |
| Does either issuer use 52/53 weeks? | Use weeks as well as dates | Interpret an extra week as organic growth |
Publication deadlines: UK annual reports and US SEC filings
UK-traded issuers within FCA DTR 4.1
For an issuer within the scope of the Financial Conduct Authority’s Disclosure Guidance and Transparency Rules (DTR) 4.1, the annual financial report must be made public no later than four months after the end of each financial year. The report includes audited financial statements, a management report and responsibility statements. The four-month period runs from the issuer’s fiscal-year end, not from the date of its results presentation.
For example, an issuer whose year ends on 30 September has a latest DTR annual-report date four months later, subject to the precise calendar calculation and any applicable market rules. The company may publish earlier, and its preliminary results announcement may occur before the audited annual report.

US Forms 10-K and 10-Q
US domestic issuers use SEC periodic-report deadlines that depend on filer category and the period covered. The SEC’s accelerated-filing rules specify Form 10-K deadlines of 60, 75 or 90 days after fiscal year-end for the relevant categories and periods. Form 10-Q deadlines are 35, 40 or 45 days after the quarter-end for the applicable filer category.
These are filing deadlines, not promises about when management will announce earnings. A company can release results before filing its 10-K or 10-Q, and an earnings call can occur on the same day as, or separately from, the filing.
| Event | UK in-scope issuer | US domestic issuer |
|---|---|---|
| Annual regulatory timing | Annual financial report latest four months after year-end under DTR 4.1 | Form 10-K in 60, 75 or 90 days, depending on filer category and applicable period |
| Quarterly regulatory timing | Requirements depend on the issuer’s applicable UK market regime; do not assume a US-style 10-Q schedule | Form 10-Q in 35, 40 or 45 days, depending on filer category and applicable period |
| Earnings announcement | Issuer-specific investor-relations date; no single universal mandatory date established for every company | Issuer-specific investor-relations date; SEC filing timing does not set one universal release day |
How to build a reliable cross-border earnings calendar
Use three separate date types
- Period end: the last day of the quarter or fiscal year being measured.
- Regulatory deadline: the latest date by which the annual report or periodic filing must be public.
- Issuer-announced event: the results release, presentation, webcast or call scheduled by investor relations.
Store all three. A calendar that shows only “earnings date” hides whether the date is an accounting period end, a filing deadline or a voluntary announcement.
Verify announcements rather than relying on a generic calendar
Earnings-calendar services often estimate dates from historical patterns. Treat those entries as provisional until the issuer confirms them. Check the investor-relations announcement; then confirm the regulatory filing in EDGAR for a US company or the applicable regulated-news announcement for a UK company. The official sources establish filing and annual-report deadlines, but they do not create one mandatory earnings-release date for every issuer.

Handle weekends, holidays and after-hours releases
Record the issuer’s stated local time and whether the event is before market open, during trading or after the close. A Friday-after-close release may be treated as a Monday event by a market-data platform, while a release near midnight in one time zone can appear on the next UTC date. Preserve the original local timestamp so the transformation can be audited.
Special cases that distort comparisons
52/53-week retail calendars
Retailers and other seasonal businesses may close on a particular weekday rather than a calendar date. A 53rd week periodically adds sales and costs to one quarter. Compare week counts, comparable-store periods and management’s like-for-like explanation before attributing the entire change to operating performance.
Year-end changes
When a company moves its year-end, the transition period can be shorter or longer than 12 months. The next annual report may therefore cover an atypical number of weeks or months. Label that period explicitly and avoid annualizing a single quarter without a company-provided basis.
Acquisitions and disposals
An acquisition can place a different reporting calendar, seasonality profile or accounting framework inside the consolidated period. A disposal can remove a business partway through a quarter. Align dates first, then read the segment and pro-forma disclosures before drawing a cross-company conclusion.
First and final accounting periods
A new UK company’s first accounting period follows its incorporation anniversary and can be affected by the seven-day accounts rule. A company entering liquidation or ceasing to trade may have a final period that does not resemble a normal year. Treat those periods as special cases rather than forcing them into a standard Q1–Q4 pattern.
A repeatable data layout for analysts
A spreadsheet or database can prevent most errors if each observation has the same fields:
- Issuer name and legal entity identifier.
- Jurisdiction and market regime.
- Fiscal-year-end date and convention (calendar, month-end or 52/53-week).
- Period label supplied by the issuer.
- Period start date, period end date and number of days or weeks.
- Statement basis and reporting framework.
- Regulatory form or report type.
- Regulatory filing deadline and actual filing date.
- Investor-relations announcement date, local time and UTC time.
- Evidence location and the date it was last verified.
Use a separate “status” field such as estimated, announced, filed or amended. If an issuer later changes its schedule, retain the original estimate for audit history and replace it with the confirmed event rather than silently overwriting it.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Assuming every US company ends on 31 December. Read the adopted fiscal year-end in the SEC filing.
- Assuming every UK company’s tax year equals its accounts year. Check whether HMRC’s accounting period was lengthened or shortened.
- Comparing Q1 labels without dates. Match exact boundaries and durations.
- Confusing a filing date with an earnings date. Store the regulatory deadline, actual filing and investor-relations event separately.
- Ignoring an extra week. Flag 52/53-week calendars and explain the quarter’s week count.
- Mixing annual and interim periods. Match three-month with three-month and six-month with six-month periods.
- Overlooking a transition year. Search the report for a year-end change and identify the unusual period length.
- Dropping the time zone. Keep the issuer’s local timestamp and UTC conversion.
- Treating framework labels as interchangeable. Read the accounting-policy disclosures before comparing individual metrics.
Quick checklist before publishing or trading on a comparison
- Have you confirmed each issuer’s fiscal-year end from an official filing or annual report?
- Are the compared periods the same duration and based on exact start and end dates?
- Did you flag a 52/53-week calendar, a year-end change or a special first/final period?
- Are statutory, tax and market-reporting periods clearly distinguished?
- Did you record the reporting framework used by each issuer?
- Are regulatory deadlines separated from investor-relations announcement dates?
- Did you verify the event with the issuer’s own announcement and relevant filing system?
- Are local time, UTC date and market holidays handled consistently?
