How to Compare the Total Cost of a Large Appliance Online (Delivery, Installation and Removal Included)

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Compare the amount you will actually pay for the same appliance at the same address—not the advertised product price. Add delivery, unpacking or set-in-place service, installation or hookup, required parts, old-unit removal, tax and any other checkout charge. If a seller cannot perform the installation you need, add a written estimate from a qualified local installer before deciding which offer is cheaper.

Service names are not standardized. One retailer may bundle basic hookup and haul-away, while another may list room delivery, installation and removal as separate selections. The reliable comparison is the final, address-specific checkout total paired with a precise description of what the crew will and will not do.

Start with a like-for-like total

For each seller, price the identical model (or an appliance with genuinely identical specifications), use the same delivery ZIP code, and select the same services. Record the complete cash amount shown at checkout. A useful total-cost formula is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Total cost = appliance price − applicable discount + delivery + installation or hookup + required parts + old-unit removal + tax and other checkout charges.

Do not call an offer cheaper when it omits a service you need. If one store delivers a washer but does not connect it, add the cost of a local plumber or installer to that store’s total. If another store includes connection and a one-for-one pickup, compare the two fully scoped totals.

What belongs in the comparison

  • Product price: Include the exact model, configuration, color or finish and any discount conditions. A sale price may require a membership, coupon, bundle or limited date.
  • Delivery level: Distinguish curbside, threshold, room-of-choice, unpack-and-set-in-place and delivery that includes installation.
  • Installation: Write down the connections and tests included, not merely the word installation.
  • Parts: Check whether a water line, drain hose, power cord, anti-tip bracket or other kit is included, supplied by the installer or sold separately.
  • Removal: Confirm the fee, one-for-one rule, appliance type accepted, disconnection requirement and where the old unit must be located.
  • Excluded work: Note plumbing, electrical, gas conversion, carpentry, cabinet modification, venting and built-in work that the seller will not perform.
  • Address-specific charges: Include tax and every fee that appears after entering the delivery address and service selections.

Why advertised prices fail to match the amount you pay

Large-appliance listings commonly show the product first and services later. A low product price can become expensive after a delivery fee, a mandatory installation kit and a separate haul-away charge. Conversely, a higher-looking listing can be less costly when basic hookup, parts and removal are included.

“Delivery,” “installation,” “basic hookup,” “unpack,” “set in place” and “haul-away” describe different tasks. Delivery may stop at a threshold. Set-in-place may mean positioning and removing packaging without connecting water, gas or electricity. Basic hookup can be limited to an existing, compliant connection. Haul-away can require a disconnected appliance in an accessible location.

Eligibility is also part of price. Service availability can change with the product, delivery address, building access, local restrictions and the type of connection. A gas appliance, built-in refrigerator or other complex installation may require a specialized contractor or a second appointment even when the seller displays no separate installation price.

Build a comparison worksheet before opening carts

Use one row per seller and one column per cost or condition. Capture the evidence while the cart is open so a promotional headline cannot replace a confirmed total.

Comparison field What to record Why it matters
Model and configuration Model number, size, finish and included accessories A similar-looking appliance may have different connection requirements or parts.
Item price Regular price, discount amount and eligibility conditions Separates a one-time promotion from the amount available to every buyer.
Delivery Fee and level of service Room delivery is not the same as installation delivery.
Installation or hookup Price, included connections, testing and appointment details The label alone does not define the work.
Required parts Included, supplied at an extra charge or customer-provided A missing cord, hose or kit can create a last-minute expense.
Old-unit removal Fee, one-for-one rule, accepted item, location and disconnection requirement Removal may be unavailable or impossible if the unit is not ready.
Excluded work Electrical, plumbing, gas, carpentry, cabinet or venting limits Outside work belongs in the final comparison.
Checkout total Address-specific amount, tax and other charges This is the cash price you can compare.
Appointment and eligibility Available dates, secondary appointment and address restrictions A nominally free service may not be available for your home.

Step-by-step: price the same appliance at multiple sellers

  1. Choose the exact appliance. Copy the model number, capacity and configuration. Do not compare a base model at one seller with a premium configuration at another.
  2. Enter the delivery address or ZIP code. Service menus and prices can change after the address is known. Use the real destination, not a nearby store or billing address.
  3. Select the delivery level. Note whether the crew brings the item to the room, unpacks it, sets it in place or only leaves it at the threshold.
  4. Select installation or hookup. Open the service description and list each included connection. If installation is unavailable, ask a qualified local installer for a written estimate covering the same work.
  5. Add required parts. Check the product requirements and the cart. Record whether the seller includes the parts, sells them as an option or expects you to supply them.
  6. Add old-unit removal. Choose haul-away only after reading the one-for-one, disconnection and access conditions. Some carts hide the option under services or delivery preferences.
  7. Review exclusions and appointment notes. Look for gas, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, cabinet, venting and built-in limitations. Record whether complex work uses a specialized contractor or a separate visit.
  8. Save the final checkout screen. Record the item subtotal, each service line, parts, tax and total. A screenshot or printed cart helps when a price changes before purchase.
  9. Normalize outside costs. Add any local installer, plumber, electrician or disposal quote needed to make the appliance operational and remove the old one.
  10. Compare scope and total together. Select the offer that meets your required scope at an acceptable total and appointment schedule, not the offer with the lowest product line.

Delivery is a service level, not one universal product

Ask where the crew will place the appliance and what happens to packaging. Curbside or threshold delivery may leave you responsible for moving a heavy unit through doors, stairs or a narrow hallway. Room-of-choice delivery can solve that access problem but still leave connection and leveling to you or another contractor. Unpack-and-set-in-place generally addresses packaging and positioning, not every plumbing, electrical or gas task.

Measure the path from the delivery vehicle to the final location, including doors, turns, stairs and elevators. Confirm building rules and appointment windows. If the seller requires a clear, accessible path, the crew may refuse delivery or charge for a return when the site is not ready; treat those conditions as part of the financial risk even when no separate fee is displayed.

Installation: define the connection work precisely

Existing connections and basic hookup

Basic installation normally assumes a suitable, code-compliant connection already exists. It may include attaching a supplied hose or cord, leveling the appliance and checking operation. The installer generally does not create a new circuit, move a water line, alter a gas line, change a vent, modify cabinets or correct an unsafe outlet unless the service description expressly says so.

Parts and installation kits

Parts can be included, optional or customer-supplied. A washer may need a water-supply hose; a dryer may require a power cord or vent component; other appliances can require anti-tip hardware or a model-specific kit. Put the exact part cost in the worksheet. “Parts included” applies only to the stated service and product example, not automatically to every model.

When to obtain an outside quote

Get a local estimate when the seller does not install your appliance type, the home lacks a compliant connection, the appliance is built in, or the job involves gas, electrical, plumbing, carpentry or cabinet work. Ask the installer to itemize labor, parts, permit or code-related work and disposal so the quote can be added to the retailer’s total without hidden assumptions.

Old-unit removal has conditions you must prepare for

Haul-away is often a one-for-one service: the crew takes an old appliance when it delivers a replacement of the same general type. Confirm that the seller accepts your specific item and whether recycling or disposal is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the disconnection rule carefully. A delivery team may remove a washer only after it has been disconnected from water and electricity, or may require the old unit to be moved out of a recess and placed where the crew can reach it. If you select removal without installation, you may have to arrange professional disconnection and move the appliance ahead of arrival.

Removal-day checklist

  • Disconnect water, gas or electricity only in a safe, code-compliant manner; hire a qualified professional when required.
  • Drain residual water and secure hoses and doors according to the seller’s instructions.
  • Clear the route, stairs and doorway for the outgoing and incoming appliances.
  • Verify that the old unit is the same type as the replacement if the policy is one-for-one.
  • Remove personal items, shelves and accessories you intend to keep.
  • Confirm whether the crew will take packaging and whether a second appointment is needed.

What current retailer examples show

The following figures illustrate different ways services can be presented. They are not market averages, guarantees or a ranking; availability and price can change by product and address.

Seller or source Published example Important qualification
Whirlpool, U.S. in-home delivery page $29 in-home major-appliance delivery; $49 express delivery where applicable; $10 unpack/set-in-place; $49.99 haul-away Page-specific examples. Service availability and pricing vary by product and address, so confirm the current cart amount. Installation is not automatically free when proper plumbing or outlets are missing.
Costco Appliance Advantage and customer-service guidance For qualifying purchases, delivery/basic hookup, basic installation parts and one-for-one like-item haul-away/recycling are described as included for most members Limitations apply. Certain complex appliances may use a specialized contractor or require a secondary appointment. The delivery team excludes carpentry, electrical and plumbing work.
Frigidaire range checkout example $695 product subtotal; $29 delivery-and-installation option with parts included; $40 separate haul-away selection This is the displayed example for one product page. Do not generalize its fees or eligibility to another model or address.
National Consumers’ Checkbook comparison, 2026 update 17 appliance models from stores in seven major metropolitan areas; totals included delivery, installation, haul-away, necessary parts or kits and an estimated local plumber charge when the seller did not install that type The sample describes that publication’s methodology, not a universal market statistic or nationwide price.

Whirlpool’s official guidance states: “Service availability may vary based on product and address. See your cart at checkout for available services and pricing details.” That instruction is useful even when shopping elsewhere: treat the cart, not a generic service page, as the controlling price and eligibility check.

Worked example: turn separate lines into a real total

Suppose a checkout shows a $695 appliance, $29 delivery and installation, included installation parts and a $40 haul-away option. Selecting all displayed services produces a pre-tax total of $764: $695 + $29 + $40. If haul-away is not selected, the pre-tax amount is $724, but you must still arrange and pay for disposal separately. The figures are the example shown on that product page, not a prediction for another appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Now suppose a competing seller advertises the same $695 appliance with free delivery but no installation for that product type. A local installer quotes $125 to connect and test it, and a disposal company quotes $60. The economically comparable amount is $880 before tax ($695 + $125 + $60), even though the headline delivery offer says free. If the seller’s removal policy covers disposal at no charge and the installer’s quote includes required parts, those line items change; record the revised scope rather than assuming the lowest headline price wins.

Account for tax, promotions and payment offers correctly

Use the final cash checkout amount for a cash-price comparison. Include the tax and other charges shown after the address is entered. Keep one-time promotions attached to the exact conditions that unlock them.

Do not subtract financing rewards, points or a deferred-interest promotion from the cash total unless you are deliberately valuing financing or rewards. Those offers can have eligibility rules, expiration dates or interest consequences that are separate from the appliance’s purchase price.

Eligibility and appointment checks that prevent surprises

  • Product type: Built-in, gas-connected and unusually complex appliances may be excluded from a basic service.
  • Address: Rural delivery zones, apartments, elevators, stairs and local rules can alter service availability or require another contractor.
  • Connection condition: Existing plumbing, outlets, gas lines and vents may have to meet stated standards before work begins.
  • Access: Measure doors and routes; a crew may not move an appliance through an unsafe or blocked path.
  • Scheduling: A separate installation appointment can delay completion even when the displayed fee is zero.
  • Removal readiness: The old appliance may need prior disconnection and relocation, particularly for haul-away without installation.

How to choose when totals are close

First eliminate any offer that cannot deliver the appliance or perform the required connection. Among eligible offers, compare the fully scoped total. If totals are close, use these tie-breakers:

  1. Choose the service with the clearer written scope and fewer customer-supplied parts.
  2. Prefer a confirmed single appointment when another offer requires a second contractor visit that would disrupt your schedule.
  3. Value included one-for-one removal when arranging disposal yourself would require a separate booking.
  4. Check the cancellation, rescheduling and damage-reporting rules before paying.
  5. Keep the quote or checkout record until installation, testing and removal are complete.

A reusable final-check checklist

  • Same model and configuration entered at every seller.
  • Same delivery address and requested service level.
  • Delivery destination and unpacking responsibility understood.
  • Installation connections, testing and leveling written down.
  • Required parts priced and assigned to either seller or installer.
  • Excluded plumbing, electrical, gas, cabinet and vent work priced separately.
  • Old-unit acceptance, one-for-one rule, disconnection and access confirmed.
  • Appointment count and earliest completion date acceptable.
  • Tax, fees and the final cash checkout total recorded.
  • Any outside installer or disposal quote added before comparing.

How to keep the comparison current

Retailer service prices, promotions, local codes and appointment availability change. The Whirlpool examples above are page-specific, and the Frigidaire amount is tied to one displayed checkout example. Re-enter the address and open the cart immediately before purchase. If the service scope or total changes, update the worksheet and obtain a fresh outside quote rather than relying on an older screenshot.

The most defensible purchase decision is therefore not “which listing has the lowest price?” It is “which eligible offer provides the required delivery, working installation, parts and old-unit removal for the lowest confirmed total at my address?”
