The useful comparison is not Duke’s tuition against another school’s tuition. It is the amount your family would actually pay each year, the time required to finish, the debt used to cover the gap, and the earnings of comparable graduates. Start with Duke’s net-price calculator and the other college’s calculator, then compare those results on the same degree, major, completion-time and earnings basis.

Duke’s published 2025–2026 estimate puts billed expenses for a returning undergraduate at $92,849–$92,909 before aid, plus estimated books, personal expenses and transportation. That produces an estimated nine-month cost of roughly $97,241–$98,037 before financial aid, depending on engineering dues and the student’s home address. Your personal figure can be materially different after grants, family contribution, borrowing and work-study are applied.

What “lifetime cost” should include

A degree’s lifetime cost is the money and time required to obtain it, not a single tuition number. For each college, build a year-by-year estimate that includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Direct charges the institution bills, such as tuition, mandatory fees, housing and a meal plan.
  • Indirect expenses the college estimates, including books, supplies, personal spending and transportation.
  • Grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid.
  • Family cash contribution, savings withdrawals and payments from current income.
  • Loans, including the balance borrowed, interest and repayment period.
  • Work-study earnings, which require the student to work and should not be treated as a grant.
  • The number of academic years the student is likely to attend before earning the credential.
  • The opportunity cost of time in school, considered separately from the college bill when you assess earnings.

Use the same definition for every school. A four-year total that excludes transportation at one college but includes it at another is not a meaningful comparison.

Duke’s published cost baseline for 2025–2026

Duke’s Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support describes estimated cost of attendance as “our best approximation of what each student at Duke would need to cover basic expenses for nine months before any financial aid is applied.” The figures below are estimates for the 2025–2026 academic year and are not a guaranteed bill.

Expense category Duke estimate How to interpret it
Tuition $70,265 Annual estimate before aid
Estimated fees $2,727 Annual estimate before aid
Housing $10,910 Estimated living charge
Food $8,947 Estimated food or meal expense
Total billed expenses $92,849–$92,909 Range reflects engineering-dues variation
Books, materials and equipment $536 Estimated indirect expense
Personal expenses $3,274 Estimated indirect expense
Domestic transportation $582–$1,318 Range depends on the student’s home address

Adding the listed categories gives an approximate pre-aid nine-month cost of $97,241–$98,037. The lower end combines $92,849 in billed expenses with $536, $3,274 and $582 in indirect estimates. The upper end combines $92,909 with $536, $3,274 and $1,318. Use Duke’s current cost page for the final application-year estimate because fees, housing choices and allowances can change.

Get an individualized Duke net price

A sticker price cannot tell you what Duke will cost your family. Use the detailed Duke Net Price Calculator, and use the quick MyinTuition estimator when you need an initial range. Duke reported that its calculator estimates were based on 2025–2026 costs and that, for qualifying families, the displayed net price and family contribution should provide a close estimate of 2026–2027 costs. Check the calculator page’s stated year before relying on the result.

  1. Gather the required household information. Have recent tax returns, income figures, assets, household size, the number of family members in college and the prospective student’s academic information available. Duke says its contribution calculation uses tax information from two years before entry.
  2. Enter the information separately for each student. Do not reuse a result from a sibling or assume that a family contribution will be identical when enrollment years differ.
  3. Record the calculator’s cost of attendance, grants or scholarships, estimated family contribution and any displayed self-help aid. Save the date and academic year shown on the results page.
  4. Repeat the process for every alternative college. Use each institution’s own calculator rather than applying Duke’s percentage or aid assumptions to another school.
  5. Replace estimates with actual award information when available. An admission-year financial-aid offer supersedes a calculator projection, but it still may cover only one academic year.

Treat the calculator as an estimate, not a promise. A change in family income, assets, household size, enrollment plan or institutional policy can change the final award.

Separate billed expenses from indirect expenses

Direct charges are the amounts likely to appear on the student account. Indirect estimates are necessary spending that may be paid to other providers. Keeping the categories separate prevents two common mistakes: assuming the billed total is the full cost, or treating every estimate as a fixed charge.

Direct expenses

For Duke’s 2025–2026 returning-undergraduate estimate, tuition, fees, housing and food total $92,849–$92,909. The range is narrow because the published engineering-dues amount changes the billed total. Your housing and food choices may also affect what you actually pay.

Indirect expenses

Duke lists $536 for books, materials and equipment, $3,274 for personal expenses, and $582–$1,318 for domestic transportation. Transportation depends on the home address, so a student living far from campus may spend more than the allowance while a nearby student may spend less. Books and personal spending are budgets, not invoices.

Apply the same categories to another college

When an alternative school publishes only tuition and fees, obtain its housing, food, books, personal and travel allowances before comparing totals. If one school’s calculator includes transportation and another’s does not, add a documented transportation estimate to both or clearly label the difference. Do not silently omit an indirect category because it is inconvenient to measure.

Model financial aid without confusing grants, loans and work-study

Duke explains its need calculation as the cost of attendance minus the family contribution. That calculation identifies a financial need or gap; it does not mean every dollar of the gap will be covered by free aid.

  • Grants and scholarships: Reduce the amount your family must pay and do not require repayment under their stated conditions. Put them in the “aid that lowers cost” column.
  • Loans: Reduce the immediate bill but create principal, interest and a future payment obligation. Show borrowing separately from net price.
  • Work-study: Requires the student to work for wages. It is not an upfront credit against the bill unless the school’s process specifically says otherwise.
  • Family contribution: Is an estimate of what the institution expects the family to provide. It is not necessarily the amount the family can comfortably pay from current cash flow.

A practical first-year calculation is:

Estimated net cost after grants = total cost of attendance − grants and scholarships.

Then create a separate financing schedule:

Annual amount financed = estimated net cost − cash and savings − payments from current income.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Break that financed amount into federal loans, private loans and any other borrowing. Do not subtract loan proceeds again when calculating the underlying price of the degree; loans finance the price rather than eliminate it.

Extend the estimate across the expected time to degree

Never multiply one year’s price by four without qualification. Tuition, fees, room, food allowances and aid policies can change, and a student may finish early, take a fifth year or transfer.

  1. Create one row for each expected academic year. Enter that year’s published cost of attendance and the aid estimate available for that year.
  2. Use the current calculator or award for each year when possible. If only first-year information is available, label later years as a scenario rather than presenting a fixed four-year total.
  3. Set a completion assumption. Four years may be the plan for a bachelor’s degree, but include a fifth-year scenario if the major, co-op, health issue or transfer history makes it plausible.
  4. Sum net costs and borrowing separately. The lifetime cash requirement and the eventual loan balance answer different questions.
  5. Record what is excluded. State whether the total includes travel during breaks, health insurance, computer purchases, summer study, interest accruing while enrolled and lost wages.

For example, if a calculator shows a first-year cost of attendance and a grant, calculate that year’s net cost. Repeat the calculation with the second-year figures instead of copying the first-year number. Then add the years required for the student’s actual completion plan.

Compare Duke with another college on identical axes

A sound comparison uses the same definitions and assumptions at both institutions:

  • Individualized net price: Compare each family’s estimated cost after grants, not each school’s advertised tuition.
  • Direct and indirect expenses: Include the same categories and identify which are billed versus estimated.
  • Completion time: Use the student’s expected years to the same credential. A three-year accelerated program and a five-year engineering path cannot be compared as four-year totals.
  • Degree level and field: Compare bachelor’s with bachelor’s and, where possible, the same or closely related major. Earnings for nursing, engineering, arts and business can differ substantially.
  • Borrowing: Compare total principal, interest assumptions, repayment term and whether a parent or private borrower is involved.
  • Earnings horizon and population: Use the same post-enrollment window, cohort definition and earnings measure for both schools.

The U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency materials link tools for comparing tuition, fees, net price and other institutional characteristics. Those tools can help verify published figures, but they do not replace each school’s individualized aid estimate.

Understand what institutional ROI studies actually measure

Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce’s 2025 institutional analysis uses College Scorecard median earnings at six, eight and ten years after enrollment, average net price and the institution’s predominant credential. Its stated calculation is: “The ROI is the cumulative sum of earnings minus the total out-of-pocket costs based on the average net price.”

Method element Georgetown 2025 approach Meaning for your comparison
Earnings points Six, eight and ten years after enrollment These are post-enrollment checkpoints, not a full working-life forecast
Cost measure Average net price Institutional average, not your family’s calculator result
Credential assumption Predominantly associate-awarding institutions: three years; predominantly bachelor’s-awarding institutions: five years Analytical assumptions that may differ from your actual time to degree
ROI expression Cumulative earnings minus total out-of-pocket costs A comparative estimate, not a guarantee of profit or payback

The study does not provide your major-specific earnings, your aid package or your personal debt. A school-level median also does not establish that attending Duke caused a particular earnings premium. Students who attend different institutions can differ in preparation, field, geography, work experience and family resources.

Build a personal lifetime comparison

Use a worksheet with one section for costs and another for outcomes. For each college, record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The calculator’s academic year and estimated cost of attendance.
  2. Grants and scholarships, with renewal conditions and whether they require a minimum grade or credit load.
  3. The expected family contribution and the amount the family can actually pay.
  4. Annual federal, institutional, parent or private borrowing.
  5. Expected years enrolled and the probability of a fifth year or transfer.
  6. The student’s intended major, credential and likely work location.
  7. Available earnings data for the same field and the same six-, eight- or ten-year horizon.

Then calculate two totals:

  • Total out-of-pocket cost: cash payments plus savings withdrawals over all enrollment years, including indirect expenses.
  • Total financed cost: all borrowed principal, followed by a repayment estimate that adds interest and identifies who owes it.

Finally, compare the outcomes using the same earnings definition. If one source reports median earnings and another reports mean earnings, do not present them as directly interchangeable. If one figure is for all graduates and another is for a particular major, label the difference and avoid a false ranking.

Use scenarios instead of a single optimistic number

Low-cost scenario

Assume the student completes on schedule, receives renewable grants as expected, uses modest transportation and personal spending, and avoids additional borrowing. This shows the best case that remains plausible under the award terms.

Base scenario

Use the calculator’s estimates, the student’s likely living arrangement and the expected completion time. Include ordinary travel and books, and model the actual loan amounts in the financial-aid offer.

Stress scenario

Add a fifth year or one term of delayed completion, a reduction in grant aid, higher transportation costs or a need to borrow for living expenses. The purpose is not to predict hardship but to test whether the choice remains manageable when one assumption goes wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare schools using the same three scenarios. A college that appears cheaper only because its estimate excludes travel or assumes a three-year completion should not win on a distorted base case.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using tuition as the lifetime price: Add fees, housing, food and indirect expenses before applying aid.
  • Calling loans “financial aid” without qualification: Show loans in a repayment schedule, not as a reduction in economic cost.
  • Treating work-study as a grant: Count it as potential student earnings that require hours worked.
  • Multiplying a first-year estimate by four: Build a year-by-year model and include a fifth-year sensitivity case.
  • Comparing different credentials: Match associate, bachelor’s and graduate pathways before comparing earnings.
  • Mixing majors: Use field-specific data where available and label all-school figures as such.
  • Presenting average ROI as a personal promise: Explain the cohort, earnings horizon, net-price measure and credential assumption.
  • Ignoring geography: Transportation, housing and post-graduation wages depend on where the student lives and works.
  • Using an outdated calculator year: Record the year shown on every result and confirm that the estimate applies to the intended entry year.

How to decide whether the higher-cost degree is defensible

A higher net price can be reasonable when it buys a credential the student is more likely to complete, materially reduces borrowing, provides a better fit for the intended field or offers outcomes that remain stronger after controlling for degree and earnings definitions. None of those conclusions follows from Duke’s sticker price alone.

Ask four final questions:

  1. What is the family’s four- or five-year cash requirement after grants?
  2. What debt balance is likely at graduation under the base and stress scenarios?
  3. Are the earnings data for the same major, credential, geography and post-enrollment horizon?
  4. Would the decision still be affordable if the student needed an extra term or the expected grant changed?

If the answer to the last question is no, compare a lower-cost path, revise the borrowing plan or seek a more reliable aid package before enrolling. If both choices are affordable, use academic fit, completion likelihood and field-specific outcomes rather than a broad institutional ranking.

Bottom line

Compare Duke and another college by personal net cost over the actual time to degree, not by annual tuition or an institutional ROI headline. Start with each school’s net-price calculator, separate billed and indirect expenses, treat grants differently from loans and work-study, and compare earnings using the same credential, major, cohort and six-, eight- or ten-year horizon. Duke’s 2025–2026 published estimate is about $97,241–$98,037 before aid when its listed billed and indirect categories are combined, but only your calculator result and final aid offer can establish what the degree will cost your family.
