There is no universally best super fund. The sound way to compare is to match the investment option, time period, total costs, equivalent insurance and practical features that apply to your own account. Start with your statement and product disclosure statement (PDS), verify MySuper products in the Australian Taxation Office’s YourSuper comparison tool, and use comparison websites only as a secondary check.
A fund brand alone tells you too little: one fund can offer several products and options with different asset mixes, fees, returns and insurance terms. The process below shows how to make a like-for-like decision and what to check before moving your money.

What you are actually comparing
“Super fund” is often used as shorthand for three different things:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The fund: the trustee and organisation administering super products.
- The product or account: the specific accumulation, MySuper, choice or other product you hold.
- The investment option: where that product invests your balance, such as a diversified, lifecycle, single-asset, active or passive option.
Your comparison must identify all three. A “balanced” option in one product may have a very different allocation to shares, property, infrastructure, bonds and cash from a “balanced” option elsewhere. The product name also determines administration charges, insurance arrangements and available services. Moneysmart’s guidance on choosing a fund explains why comparing the option and product, rather than a logo, is essential: Choosing a super fund.

Eight steps for a like-for-like comparison
- Record the account you hold. From your latest statement or online account, write down the exact product name, investment option, balance, administration fee, investment fee, transaction costs and insurance cover.
- Define the comparison. Decide whether you are comparing your current option with another option in the same product, or with a product in another fund. Keep the product and option names in every note.
- Match investment risk and assets. Compare asset allocation, diversification, risk and return objectives, and whether the option is lifecycle, diversified, single-asset, active or passive.
- Align performance periods. Use five-year returns or longer where available, for the same or a genuinely similar option and the same end date.
- Add all applicable costs. Include administration, investment, transaction, buy/sell spread, switching, advice and insurance charges. Apply the charges to your balance and contribution pattern.
- Match insurance. Compare the same type and amount of life, total and permanent disability (TPD), and income-protection cover, then check exclusions, definitions, waiting periods and eligibility.
- Assess practical features. Check online tools, advice, customer service, change processes, employer arrangements and any defined-benefit or other special feature.
- Check the consequences of moving. Confirm future employer contributions, replacement insurance and any exit, transfer or market-timing implications before requesting a rollover.
Step 1: collect the facts about your current account
Your latest statement is the baseline. Moneysmart’s how to check your super guidance describes the records to review. Capture:
- the legal product name and member number;
- your balance and the date it was measured;
- the investment option and its current asset allocation;
- administration, investment and transaction costs shown on the statement or PDS;
- insurance type, benefit amount, premium and policy status;
- contribution history, including employer payments; and
- any employer-specific, defined-benefit or advice arrangement attached to the account.
Save the current PDS, fees-and-costs section, insurance guide and latest annual statement. Fees, allocations, performance and insurance terms can change, so date every document you use.
Step 2: compare investment options by substance, not label
Option labels such as “balanced” and “growth” are not standard risk categories. Read the option’s investment objective, strategic asset allocation, permitted ranges, suggested minimum investment period and risk description. Moneysmart explains the distinctions in Super investment options.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAsset allocation and diversification
Compare the percentage allocated to growth assets (for example, shares, property and infrastructure) with defensive assets (such as fixed interest and cash). A higher growth allocation can produce larger fluctuations and losses over shorter periods. Also check geographic exposure, unlisted assets, currency management and whether the option can move outside its strategic ranges.
Diversification means spreading money across asset classes and investments. A single-asset option, such as Australian shares or cash, will behave differently from a diversified option even if both are in the same fund. Do not infer diversification from the word “balanced”; read the allocation table in each PDS.
Lifecycle and diversified approaches
A diversified option generally keeps a mix of assets within stated ranges. A lifecycle option changes its mix as the member approaches a target age or retirement stage, usually reducing growth exposure over time. Compare the age-based switch rules, target dates and whether the change happens automatically. Two members with the same balance can therefore be invested differently because of age or lifecycle stage.
Active and passive management
Active options select investments with the aim of outperforming a benchmark; passive options seek to track an index or other reference portfolio. Compare the stated objective, benchmark, management fee and how closely results have tracked that benchmark. The label alone does not establish that one approach will deliver higher future returns.

Investment comparison table
| What to compare | What to record from each PDS | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Asset mix | Strategic allocation, ranges and major asset classes | Different mixes create different risk, volatility and diversification. |
| Option type | Diversified, lifecycle, single-asset, active or passive | The management method and how the mix changes can differ materially. |
| Objective and risk | Risk/return objective, risk label and suggested investment period | Shows whether the option fits your time horizon and tolerance for losses. |
| Liquidity and valuation | Any withdrawal, switching or valuation conditions described in the PDS | Unlisted or less-liquid assets can affect transaction timing and pricing. |
Step 3: use performance data carefully
Moneysmart recommends comparing five-year returns or longer, using the same or a similar investment option and the same timeframe. A one-year result can be dominated by a market event and is not a reliable basis for selecting a retirement investment.

Make the periods identical
Write the start and end dates beside every return. Do not compare a financial-year return with a calendar-year return, or a figure measured before a major option change with one measured afterwards. Check whether returns are before or after investment fees and taxes, and whether the published number is a personal account return or an option-level return.
Check that the options are genuinely comparable
Compare options with similar asset allocations, objectives and risk levels. A high-growth option should not be presented as outperforming a conservative option simply because it took more market risk. If the options differ, explain the difference instead of ranking them.
Use returns as context, not a forecast
Past performance does not guarantee future returns. It can show how an option behaved through different market conditions, but it cannot predict your final balance. Consider performance alongside fees, risk, diversification, services and insurance rather than using it as the sole selection rule.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 4: calculate every cost that applies to you
A headline administration fee is only one part of the price. Your total cost can include fixed charges, percentage-based charges or both, applied at different frequencies. Record the basis and timing of every charge, then calculate the amount on your balance.
Cost categories to collect
| Cost | What to look for | Comparison question |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Fixed dollar fee, percentage fee, or a combination | How much would this charge be on my balance, and how often is it deducted? |
| Investment | Option-level investment or management fee | Is the fee appropriate for the option’s strategy and asset mix? |
| Transaction | Transaction-cost allowance or activity-related cost disclosed for the option | How could trading and portfolio turnover affect my result? |
| Buy/sell spread | Spread applied when buying or selling units | Would a contribution, switch or withdrawal incur a spread? |
| Switching | Any fee or condition for changing investment options | What would it cost to move part or all of my balance? |
| Personal advice | Fees for advice charged to the account, where applicable | Am I paying for advice I use and understand? |
| Insurance | Premium deducted from super for each policy | What premium buys the equivalent cover, and how does it change with age? |
Check whether an illustration assumes a particular balance, contribution level or payment frequency. A percentage fee produces a larger dollar charge as your balance grows; a fixed fee can be relatively more significant for a small balance. Compare the dollar impact on your account, not just the advertised percentage.
Fees need an investment and cover context
Lower fees can help when other factors are equal, but a low fee does not identify the right investment option or adequate insurance. A cheaper option with a materially different asset mix is not a like-for-like bargain. Include insurance premiums in the cost comparison because they reduce the amount invested for retirement.
Model assumptions with the Moneysmart calculator
The Moneysmart superannuation calculator can illustrate how assumptions about costs affect a projection. Its figures are a model, not a promise or a fund-wide statistic; it cannot predict a final benefit and is intended for accumulation accounts, not defined-benefit accounts. Use it to test fee assumptions, then rely on each PDS and your statement for actual charges.
Step 5: compare insurance on equivalent cover
Insurance through super can be convenient and may be available without the same medical checks as an individually arranged policy, but premiums reduce retirement savings and default cover may not meet your needs. Compare the policy, not just the premium.

Cover types
| Cover | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Life or death cover | Benefit paid on death, terminal-illness provisions, exclusions, eligibility and age at which cover ends. |
| Total and permanent disability (TPD) | Definition of disability, occupation or activities test, waiting period, exclusions and claim requirements. |
| Income protection | Replacement-income percentage, benefit period, waiting period, definition of incapacity and policy end age. |
Match the benefit before comparing price
For each fund, request the premium and terms for the same dollar amount and type of cover. Check whether cover is unit-based, where the insured amount per unit changes with age, or a fixed dollar benefit. Record indexation, premium increases, occupational classifications and whether underwriting is required.
Eligibility and automatic cover rules
Moneysmart’s Insurance through super guidance says most funds automatically provide life and TPD cover to most members aged 25 or above. A new member under 25 or with a balance below $6,000 generally does not receive automatic cover unless an exception applies. By law, insurance on an account with no contributions for at least 16 months is cancelled, subject to the rules and exceptions described by Moneysmart. Verify the current thresholds and your fund’s terms before relying on them.
Check when cover can change or stop
Cover may change when you alter the amount, switch products, stop contributing, close the account or reach an age limit. Read the policy booklet for exclusions, pre-existing-condition rules, waiting periods, claim definitions and reinstatement provisions. Do not assume that an insurance amount shown on an old statement is still active.
Recommended Free Tools
Step 6: include services and account-specific features
Two products with similar investment results and fees can provide very different member experiences. Compare:
- online balance, transaction and beneficiary tools;
- how easily you can change investment options or contributions;
- telephone, digital and written customer service channels;
- access to financial advice and how advice fees are charged;
- employer payroll integration and contribution processing;
- beneficiary nomination processes; and
- any defined-benefit, employer-specific or legacy feature that could be lost on transfer.
These features matter most when you expect to change investments, claim insurance, update beneficiaries or resolve a contribution problem. Verify them in the PDS, service guides and your account portal rather than assuming every fund offers the same process.
Step 7: use comparison tools and documents for their proper purpose
ATO YourSuper
The ATO’s YourSuper comparison tool is designed to compare MySuper products. It is not a complete comparison of every choice investment option or every product in the super system. Use it to identify comparable MySuper products, then open the relevant PDS and product website documents to confirm fees, asset allocation, performance period and insurance.
Product disclosure statements
The PDS is the controlling source for product terms. Read the sections covering investment options, fees and costs, insurance, switching, withdrawals, cooling-off or transfer provisions, and complaints. Keep the edition date because a later PDS can change the information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrivate comparison websites
Moneysmart notes that private comparison websites may earn money from promoted links, may not show every option and can use different criteria and scoring methods. Their ratings are supplementary evidence, not a substitute for a PDS and your own account figures. Moneysmart’s direct warning is: Don’t choose a super fund based only on its rating on one of these websites.
See Moneysmart’s choosing-a-fund guidance for the scope and limitations.

How to build your comparison worksheet
Use one row per product and one column per decision factor. Keep the following fields separate so a low fee cannot hide a mismatched investment or weaker insurance:
- fund, product and investment-option name;
- balance used for calculations and statement date;
- asset allocation, option type and risk/return objective;
- five-year-or-longer return period, measurement dates and fee treatment;
- administration, investment, transaction, spread, switching, advice and insurance costs;
- life, TPD and income-protection benefit, premium and policy conditions;
- online, advice and customer-service features;
- employer contribution arrangements; and
- features or benefits that would be lost on transfer.
Calculate the annual dollar cost on your balance for each product, then annotate any costs that vary with age, transactions or investment performance. Record the date and document source beside every figure.
What to check before switching funds
Switching is a financial decision, not just an administrative form. Moneysmart’s switching super funds guidance highlights several checks.
- Confirm replacement insurance first. Obtain written confirmation of the new policy’s acceptance, benefit amount, exclusions and start date before cancelling existing cover. If medical underwriting is required, do not assume acceptance.
- Check employer payments. Give your employer the correct destination fund details and confirm payroll can direct future contributions there. Monitor the first contribution after the transfer.
- Identify special benefits. Ask whether your current account is defined benefit or has employer-specific terms, guarantees or features that cannot be recreated in the destination product.
- Understand closure effects. Confirm whether the rollover closes the old account, stops insurance, changes beneficiary nominations or prevents future contributions.
- Plan for market exposure. During a transfer, money may be out of the market briefly. Ask both funds how the transfer is processed, when units are sold and when the new investment is purchased.
- Check all balances and fees. If you have multiple accounts, list each one, its insurance and its costs before consolidating. Combining accounts can reduce duplicated fees but can also remove cover or other benefits.
- Keep evidence. Save rollover confirmations, insurance correspondence, beneficiary records and the final statement from the old fund.
Common comparison mistakes and the fix
Choosing a brand instead of an option
Problem: A fund-level reputation is treated as proof that every option is suitable.
Fix: Compare the exact product and option, including asset mix, objective, fees, performance period and insurance.
Ranking a one-year return
Problem: A recent result is used to predict retirement wealth.
Fix: Compare five-year or longer periods for similar options and treat results as historical context.

Fix: Add every applicable charge and convert percentage fees into dollars on your balance.
Comparing insurance premiums without matching cover
Problem: The cheapest premium appears best because it buys a smaller benefit or has narrower definitions.
Fix: Match type and amount of cover, then compare exclusions, waiting periods, eligibility and end dates.
Consolidating automatically
Problem: A rollover is treated as beneficial solely because it removes an extra account.
Fix: Check insurance continuity, employer arrangements, defined-benefit rights and transfer timing before closing anything.
Treating a comparison-site score as a recommendation
Problem: A promoted or incomplete ranking is mistaken for a full market assessment.
Fix: Use government tools for their stated scope, read the PDS and verify your own statement figures.
A practical decision rule
Choose the product and option that best fit your circumstances after you have compared the same five dimensions:
- Investment fit: asset allocation, diversification, risk and time horizon.
- Comparable performance: five-year-or-longer history for a similar option and identical dates.
- Total cost: all applicable fees and premiums on your balance.
- Equivalent insurance: benefit amount and policy conditions, not premium alone.
- Practical fit: services, employer payments and features you would lose or gain.
If two options remain close, document the trade-off rather than searching for a single “winner.” A modest fee difference may be outweighed by a materially different risk profile or insurance definition; a strong historical return may reflect more growth exposure than you want. Recheck the PDS, fees, insurance and YourSuper information whenever a fund changes its product or when your job, balance, health, family responsibilities or retirement horizon changes.
