How to Compare Soybean Basis and Cash Bids When Selling a Crop

The best soybean bid is the offer that leaves you with the highest dependable net return for your grain—not automatically the bid with the highest cash price or strongest basis. Compare each offer on the same futures month, delivery period, location, quality, quantity and contract terms, then subtract hauling, storage, handling, drying and other costs.

Basis is the local cash price minus the relevant soybean futures price. Once every quote is put on that common basis and adjusted for your actual costs, you can see whether a higher elevator price really beats a lower-looking offer delivered closer to your farm.

What a soybean cash bid and basis actually represent

A cash bid is the price a buyer offers for soybeans under specified delivery and quality conditions. It is a complete price only when you know the delivery window, location, grade, quantity, deductions, premiums and contract type.

Basis isolates the local component of that price:

Basis = local cash bid − relevant soybean futures price

USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA-AMS) defines the calculation as the difference between its Bid field and Futures Price field. For soybeans, the futures reference is the Chicago Board of Trade market within CME Group. A negative basis means the cash bid is below the futures price; a positive basis means it is above it.

Term What it means Why it matters when comparing bids
Cash bid The buyer’s stated local price for a specified delivery arrangement. It is the amount you may receive before your own delivery and carrying costs.
Futures price The price for the referenced soybean futures contract month. Different contract months can make two cash prices appear different even when local basis is similar.
Basis Cash bid minus the matching futures price. It shows the local differential created by supply, demand, location, transportation and handling conditions.
Net cash value Cash bid after hauling, storage, handling, drying, interest and contract-specific adjustments. This is the figure that should drive a sale decision for your farm.

Compare bids on an identical set of terms

Before doing arithmetic, make the offers comparable. A quote that looks higher can require a longer haul, earlier delivery, higher moisture deductions or a different contract commitment.

Record the buyer and physical location

Write down the elevator, processor, river terminal or other buyer and the exact delivery point. Two facilities in the same town can have different bids and receiving rules. A destination bid may include transportation that an origin bid leaves to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the delivery date or window

Record the first and last delivery date, whether the offer is harvest delivery, deferred delivery, forward delivery or “to-arrive,” and whether the buyer can change receiving hours or appointment requirements. A bid for delivery this week is not equivalent to a bid for delivery after harvest.

Confirm the commodity, grade and quality rules

Check that both offers are for soybeans rather than a different class or specification. Note moisture limits, damage, foreign material, test weight, splits, heat damage, vomitoxin or other quality provisions that the buyer applies. A nominal premium may disappear if your load receives a discount.

Match the quantity and commitment

Some prices apply only to a stated number of bushels, a minimum contract size or a scheduled delivery program. Record whether the bid is for spot bushels, a forward contract, a basis contract or another arrangement, and whether a failure to deliver creates fees or replacement-cost exposure.

Capture deductions, premiums and fees

List drying, grading, checkoff, storage, handling, loading, shrink, late-delivery and other charges. Record premiums separately rather than folding them into the headline price; doing so makes it easier to compare the same quality assumptions at another location.

Use the matching soybean futures month

The futures month must correspond to the cash bid’s delivery timing. USDA-AMS describes the closest contract month as the basis reference, while Iowa State Extension describes using the nearest-to-maturity futures contract. In practice, use the contract month specified by the buyer or the month that represents the cash delivery window, and use the futures quote from the same time as the cash quote.

Why the month changes the result

Soybean futures months can trade at different prices. If one elevator uses a nearby month and another uses a later delivery month, subtracting both bids from one futures price produces misleading bases. The cash-price difference may simply reflect the futures spread rather than a better local bid.

How to verify the reference

  1. Ask the buyer which soybean futures month underlies the quote.
  2. Check whether the quote is for a nearby, harvest, or deferred delivery period.
  3. Record the futures price and the time it was observed.
  4. Use that same month and observation time when calculating basis.
  5. If the buyer will not state the reference, treat the calculated basis as your estimate and confirm the written contract before selling.

Calculate basis for every offer

For each comparable bid, subtract the matching futures price from the cash bid. Keep the units identical—normally dollars per bushel—and do not mix a futures quote from one date with a cash quote from another.

Illustrative calculation: If a buyer offers $11.05 per bushel for delivery in a period tied to a soybean futures price of $11.30, the basis is $11.05 − $11.30 = −$0.25 per bushel. This example is a method demonstration, not a current market quotation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basis is useful because it separates the local differential from the futures component. It does not replace the cash price: your sale proceeds are based on the cash contract or the final futures-plus-basis pricing terms.

Illustrative comparison of two local offers

The following example uses invented numbers solely to show how the calculation and cost adjustment work. Assume both offers are for the same grade and quantity, and each buyer has confirmed the same futures reference month at the same time.

Elevator A Elevator B
Cash bid $11.05/bu. $10.98/bu.
Matching futures price $11.30/bu. $11.30/bu.
Calculated basis −$0.25/bu. −$0.32/bu.
Hauling and delivery cost from the farm $0.16/bu. $0.06/bu.
Other stated handling or quality cost $0.02/bu. $0.03/bu.
Illustrative net after listed costs $10.87/bu. $10.89/bu.

Elevator A has the higher cash bid and stronger basis, but Elevator B produces the higher net in this particular example because its delivery cost is lower. The conclusion changes if the hauling distance, receiving terms or deductions change. Never treat the table’s numbers as a market forecast.

Adjust the bid for your farm’s real costs

After calculating basis, convert each offer to an estimated net value at your farm. Use your own rates and the buyer’s written schedule; there is no universal hauling or storage cost that applies to every operation.

Hauling and transportation

Estimate the full cost of moving the grain, including truck hire or ownership cost, fuel, labor, loading, unloading, waiting time, permits and return miles where applicable. A destination bid may already include freight, while an origin bid may not. Subtract the cost only once.

Storage and handling

For grain held on-farm or at a commercial facility, include bin or warehouse charges, in-and-out fees, elevation, shrink, monitoring and expected handling. If the buyer’s bid includes free storage for a defined period, record the expiration date and subsequent rate.

Drying and quality adjustments

Use the buyer’s moisture schedule and your expected delivered moisture. Drying charges, shrink and discounts can materially change the net even when two headline bids are close. Include any quality premium only if your grain is likely to meet the documented specification.

Interest and opportunity cost

Holding grain postpones cash receipt and may require operating credit. Include the interest cost for the time between harvest and sale, along with the value of using storage capacity for another crop. A later delivery bid has to compensate for those carrying costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Futures spreads between delivery months

Extension guidance notes that differences between futures delivery months reflect storage and interest expectations. A later-month cash bid should be compared with the later-month futures reference and with the cost of carrying grain until that date—not simply against today’s nearby futures price.

Distinguish quote types before comparing prices

USDA-AMS reports can distinguish origin elevator bids from destination 30-day-to-arrive bids. Those are different delivery arrangements and should not be ranked as if they were interchangeable.

Origin or elevator bid

You deliver grain to the named facility, usually bearing the transportation cost and complying with that location’s receiving and quality rules.

Destination or arrival bid

The buyer quotes a price for grain arriving at a specified destination and period. Freight may be embedded, but you still need to confirm who arranges transportation, when title transfers and which deductions apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forward delivery offer

You commit to deliver during a future window. Check the delivery obligation, pricing deadline, cancellation language, margin or performance requirements and what happens if production is short.

Basis contract or futures-priced arrangement

The basis is established while the futures component is priced later, or the reverse. Compare the basis separately, but understand that your final cash price remains exposed to the component that has not yet been fixed.

Understand what moves soybean basis

Basis is local and changes over time. USDA-AMS identifies local and global supply and demand, local supplies, storage availability and transportation availability as important influences.

Harvest supply

When many farms deliver at once, elevators may face limited space, heavy receiving volumes and costly logistics. Cash prices can fall relative to futures, producing a weaker basis. This is a tendency, not a rule for every location or harvest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Immediate demand

A processor, exporter or livestock market needing nearby soybeans can bid more aggressively. Stronger local demand can lift cash prices relative to futures and strengthen basis.

Storage capacity

Full bins, terminal congestion or limited commercial space can pressure bids. Open capacity can support bids when buyers need to attract deliveries.

Transportation availability

Truck, rail, barge and terminal availability affects what a buyer can pay. A transportation bottleneck can weaken a local bid even when futures prices are unchanged; unusually strong freight demand can also widen local differentials.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use basis history as context, not a prediction

Historical basis helps answer whether a current quote is unusually weak or strong for that place and time, but it does not guarantee what the next bid will be. Compare the same location or reporting district and a comparable point in the marketing year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Iowa State Extension’s soybean-basis materials present averages, maximums and minimums across recent marketing years for selected Iowa and nearby markets. The analysis uses cash and futures prices observed on a specified weekday and the closest delivery-month contract. Some market quotations span several cents, and the tables use the midpoint of the range. Therefore, a regional average is context—not the exact offer available to your farm.

A practical history check

  1. Identify the location or reporting district that most closely matches your buyer.
  2. Find observations from a similar seasonal date or marketing-year point.
  3. Compare the current basis with the historical average and range.
  4. Investigate unusual differences by checking harvest pressure, demand, storage and transportation conditions.
  5. Use the result to ask better questions of the buyer, not to promise that basis will return to an average.

Public data you can use

USDA-AMS Grain Basis dataset

The USDA-AMS Grain Basis dataset contains soybean bid, futures price, nearby futures month, basis, market type and location fields. Its published temporal coverage begins in 2007 and extends to the present; the page consulted displayed a last update of July 23, 2026. The dataset publishes weekly, so a displayed value may not be the buyer’s live bid on the day you call.

USDA-AMS State Grain Reports

USDA-AMS maintains state-level grain-report products with a mix of daily and weekly schedules. Select the state and market report relevant to your farm, then read its metadata for collection frequency, market type and delivery description.

USDA-AMS My Market News example

The North Carolina Cash Grain Bids report describes daily price collection, periodic verification by reporters and reporter recertification every two years. Those details apply to that report page; do not assume every state report uses the same schedule or verification process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local elevator confirmation

Public reports are a starting point. Call the buyer and confirm the current bid, delivery window, quality schedule, quantity limits, fees and pricing basis before committing grain. Ask for the offer in writing when possible.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

  • Comparing cash prices tied to different futures months: identify each quote’s reference month and calculate each basis separately.
  • Treating the strongest basis as the best sale: calculate net cash after freight, storage, handling, drying, interest and other costs.
  • Ignoring delivery timing: compare the carrying costs and risk of holding grain until the later window.
  • Mixing origin and destination bids: determine who pays freight and where title transfers.
  • Overlooking quality deductions: apply the buyer’s actual moisture and grade schedule rather than the headline bid.
  • Using a regional average as a live quote: check the report’s date and frequency, then confirm with the buyer.
  • Assuming history predicts the next basis move: use historical ranges for context only; local conditions can change quickly.
  • Failing to document the offer: save the timestamp, futures month, bid, delivery terms and written adjustments before pricing grain.

A one-page soybean bid worksheet

Use one row per offer so every decision rests on the same fields.

Field What to enter
Buyer and delivery point Name, address or facility identifier
Quote date and time When the cash and futures observations were obtained
Quote type Origin, destination, spot, forward, basis contract or other
Delivery window Specific dates or month
Cash bid Buyer price per bushel before your costs
Futures reference Soybean contract month and futures price
Calculated basis Cash bid minus matching futures price
Quality terms Moisture, damage, foreign material, premiums and discounts
Quantity and commitment Bushels, minimums, delivery obligation and pricing deadline
Transportation Hauling or freight cost per bushel
Storage and carrying Storage, handling, drying and interest through delivery
Estimated net Cash bid plus or minus documented adjustments, less your costs

When one bid is actually better

Choose the offer with the best documented net value after matching all terms, provided you can meet its delivery and quality obligations. A higher basis is useful evidence of a stronger local differential, but it is not a standalone ranking. The practical decision combines five tests:

  1. The cash price and futures month are clearly identified.
  2. The delivery location and timing fit your grain and logistics.
  3. The quality and quantity terms are achievable.
  4. All freight, storage, handling, drying, interest and other charges are included.
  5. The buyer has confirmed that the quote is current and available for your volume.

If two offers remain close after these adjustments, consider operational reliability, receiving capacity and the risk of missing the delivery window—but document any fee or obligation before signing.
