How to Compare SIP and Lump-Sum Investments Using XIRR

By TheFinanceBase Team 12 min read

To compare a systematic investment plan (SIP) with a lump-sum investment, calculate XIRR separately for each strategy. Enter every contribution as a negative cash flow on the date the money actually left your account, then enter the portfolio value as a positive cash flow on one shared valuation date. XIRR converts those irregularly timed cash flows into an annualized rate, so the comparison reflects when each rupee or dollar was invested rather than pretending that all contributions were made at the same time.

Use the same investment assumptions, end date, valuation method, fee treatment and tax treatment for both cases. The resulting rates describe only the dated cash flows and ending values you supplied; they do not establish that SIPs or lump sums are generally superior.

What XIRR measures in a SIP-versus-lump-sum comparison

Microsoft Support defines XIRR as the function that “returns the internal rate of return for a schedule of cash flows that is not necessarily periodic.” That distinction matters because a SIP may be debited on dates that are not exactly one month apart, while a lump sum has one investment date. XIRR uses each date instead of assigning every entry to an equal-length period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The calculation finds the annualized rate at which the net present value of the dated cash flows is zero. In practical terms, it answers: What annual rate would make these actual outflows and this ending inflow mathematically consistent? It is a money-weighted return, not a simple average of monthly returns and not a forecast of what the investment will earn next year.

Microsoft states that succeeding cash flows are discounted on a 365-day year. Consequently, two contributions one calendar month apart are discounted according to their actual day counts, including months with 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. The convention is a calculation rule, not a promise of 365-day investment performance.

For a fair comparison, calculate one XIRR for the SIP cash-flow series and a second XIRR for the lump-sum series. Do not combine both histories in one formula: doing so would produce a rate for a mixed investor cash-flow history rather than a result for either strategy.

Set the comparison rules before opening Excel

A side-by-side result is meaningful only when the two scenarios are defined on the same basis. Write down these controls first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Contribution schedule: list the exact SIP debit dates and amount on each date. For the lump sum, specify the single investment date and amount.
  • Total contribution: state whether both strategies invest the same total amount. If they do, show how the lump-sum date relates to the first, last or other SIP installment; different timing creates a different exposure to market movements.
  • Comparison period: choose one start convention and one common end date. Do not give the SIP an extra month of valuation time or stop the lump-sum calculation earlier.
  • Ending valuation: value both portfolios on that same date, using the same pricing convention and treatment of uninvested cash.
  • Costs and taxes: either include fees, taxes, dividends, withdrawals and other cash flows in both scenarios or exclude each category from both. If a cost occurs on a particular date, record it with that date.
  • Currency and units: keep each strategy in the same currency and use the same sign convention throughout.

These are methodological controls, not a recommendation of one contribution strategy. A result changes when any control changes.

How to record a lump-sum investment

A lump-sum history normally has at least two nonzero entries:

  1. On the investment date, enter the amount paid into the investment as a negative number. For example, an investment of 120,000 is recorded as -120000.
  2. On the common valuation date, enter the portfolio’s value as a positive number. If that value is 137,500, enter 137500.

If the account receives a dividend, incurs a fee, or has a withdrawal between those dates, add a separate dated cash flow and apply the same inclusion rule to the SIP series. An investor contribution is an outflow from the investor’s perspective and therefore negative; money returned to the investor or the value received at the end is positive.

Do not enter a negative “return” for a falling portfolio. The ending value remains a positive inflow in the investor cash-flow model even when it is lower than the amount invested. The loss is represented by the smaller positive ending value.

How to record SIP contributions

Each installment is its own dated cash flow. A six-installment plan is not represented by one negative total on the first date unless all the money was actually invested then. Enter each debit separately, for example:

Date SIP cash flow Why it appears
2025-01-10 -20,000 First installment leaves the investor’s account.
2025-02-12 -20,000 Second installment on its actual debit date.
2025-03-11 -20,000 Third installment; the interval need not be exactly 30 days.
2025-04-10 -20,000 Fourth installment.
2025-05-12 -20,000 Fifth installment.
2025-06-10 -20,000 Sixth installment.
2025-12-31 Positive portfolio value Value of all SIP holdings on the shared end date.

The dates above are an illustration of irregular calendar spacing, not a prescribed schedule. Replace them with the dates in the account statement. If a contribution is missed, delayed or split, record what actually happened rather than the intended plan.

Build a spreadsheet that keeps the histories separate

A two-column illustration can make the comparison easy to audit. Put dates in one column, then use one cash-flow column per strategy:

Date SIP cash flow Lump-sum cash flow
Each SIP contribution date Negative installment 0 or blank, depending on the consistent range design
Lump-sum investment date 0 or blank Negative initial investment
Common valuation date Positive SIP value Positive lump-sum value

Zeros and blanks are not interchangeable descriptions of a cash flow. A zero explicitly says no cash moved on that date; a blank says the cell is empty. Either layout can work if the values range and dates range selected for each XIRR contain matching rows and the treatment is consistent. For maximum auditability, many people use zeros in a shared schedule and then select the full aligned ranges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternatively, maintain two compact tables containing only each strategy’s nonzero entries. This avoids rows that are irrelevant to one strategy, but the dates and values still must have equal lengths within each formula.

Illustrative aligned schedule

Date SIP cash flow Lump-sum cash flow
2025-01-10 -20,000 -120,000
2025-02-12 -20,000 0
2025-03-11 -20,000 0
2025-04-10 -20,000 0
2025-05-12 -20,000 0
2025-06-10 -20,000 0
2025-12-31 Positive SIP value Positive lump-sum value

This table deliberately does not supply portfolio values or an XIRR result. Insert the values from the same-day statements or valuation calculation, then let the spreadsheet calculate each rate. The investment amounts and dates are illustrative inputs, not a performance claim.

Calculate both rates with Excel’s XIRR function

In Excel, the syntax is:

=XIRR(values, dates, [guess])

The values range contains one strategy’s signed cash flows. The dates range contains the corresponding dates in the same order. The optional guess is an initial estimate that can help Excel find a root when the cash-flow pattern is difficult.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Enter actual contribution, investment, fee, withdrawal and valuation dates in a date-formatted column. Avoid typing dates as text that Excel cannot recognize.
  2. Enter SIP cash flows in one column: every contribution is negative and the shared ending value is positive.
  3. Enter lump-sum cash flows in a second column: the initial investment is negative and the shared ending value is positive.
  4. Check that each strategy has at least one negative and one positive value. Microsoft lists this sign requirement for XIRR.
  5. In an empty cell, select the SIP values range and its matching dates range. For example, if SIP values are in B2:B8 and dates are in A2:A8, enter =XIRR(B2:B8,A2:A8).
  6. In another cell, use the lump-sum range with the same date rows, such as =XIRR(C2:C8,A2:A8).
  7. Format each result as a percentage with a sensible number of decimal places. The percentage is annualized; it is not the total currency gain.
  8. If Excel cannot converge, try a reasonable initial guess, such as =XIRR(B2:B8,A2:A8,0.1), and investigate the cash flows before relying on the output.

Microsoft’s documentation is available at XIRR function. It notes that Excel solves iteratively and returns the rate for which XNPV equals zero. The function’s availability can vary by spreadsheet product and release, so verify support in the software and version you use rather than assuming every spreadsheet has identical behavior.

Why actual dates matter more than “monthly” labels

A label such as “monthly SIP” describes an intention, not necessarily equal time intervals. A debit on January 31 followed by one on February 28 is separated by fewer days than a debit on March 31 followed by one on April 30. XIRR uses the date serial values and a 365-day convention, so replacing actual dates with an artificial sequence of equal periods changes the answer.

Use the statement’s settlement or investment date consistently. If an instruction is placed on one date but units are purchased or cash is debited on another, decide which date represents the investor cash flow and apply that rule to both scenarios. A valuation date should likewise be a date on which both portfolio values can be established under the same convention.

IRR versus XIRR for recurring investments

Use ordinary IRR when cash flows occur at regular intervals and you intentionally represent every interval in a consistent period sequence. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes IRR for periodic cash flows from XIRR for cash flows that occur on actual dates and may be irregular. A genuinely regular schedule can be modeled with either approach only if the period assumptions are appropriate, but XIRR is the safer choice when dates differ, contributions are skipped, or extra cash flows occur between installments.

Do not “annualize” a monthly IRR by simply multiplying it by 12. That shortcut ignores compounding and the actual spacing of dates. If the cash flows are dated, use XIRR directly and report that the result follows the 365-day convention.

Microsoft’s broader cash-flow guide discusses choosing between periodic and date-based functions at Go with the cash flow: Calculate NPV and IRR in Excel.

Quality checks before you compare the percentages

Run these checks on both formulas:

  • Matching lengths: the values range and dates range contain the same number of cells and are aligned row by row.
  • Valid dates: every date is a real spreadsheet date, not an unrecognized text string, and dates are in a sensible chronological order.
  • Opposite signs: at least one negative outflow and one positive inflow exist in each series.
  • One shared endpoint: both ending values are measured on the same date and use the same price or valuation rule.
  • Complete cash-flow history: fees, taxes, distributions, withdrawals and additional contributions have not been omitted from one strategy only.
  • Units and currency: all entries use the same currency and scale; do not mix cents and whole currency units.
  • Formula ranges: headers, explanatory text and unrelated rows are excluded unless they are valid, intentionally included cells.

Microsoft notes that invalid dates, mismatched range lengths and missing positive or negative values can cause errors. A formula that returns a number is not automatically correct; inspect the rows that produced it.

Troubleshoot common XIRR errors and surprising results

#VALUE! or a date-related error

Check that every date cell is recognized as a date and that no text, currency symbol or explanatory label has slipped into the selected range. Re-enter a problematic date in the spreadsheet’s date format, then verify the formula’s ranges.

#NUM! or failure to converge

XIRR uses an iterative method and may return #NUM! when it cannot find a solution within its attempts. First check the signs, dates and ending value. Then look for accidentally omitted cash flows or a very unusual sequence with several sign changes. Supplying a different initial guess can help the iteration, for example =XIRR(B2:B8,A2:A8,-0.2), but a guess should not be used to conceal bad inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rate that looks implausibly high or low

Inspect the first and last dates, the units, and the size of the ending value. A contribution made near the valuation date has little time to compound, while an early contribution has much longer exposure; that timing can materially change the annualized rate. Also confirm that a fee was not entered as a positive receipt or that an ending value was not entered as a negative outflow.

Different answers after changing the guess

Multiple mathematically acceptable IRR or XIRR roots can exist when the cash-flow signs change more than once. Microsoft cautions that Excel returns the first result it finds and that a different initial guess can lead to a different result. If guesses produce different roots, disclose the guess, inspect the cash-flow pattern and avoid presenting one unexplained percentage as uniquely definitive. The relevant Microsoft discussion is at Go with the cash flow: Calculate NPV and IRR in Excel.

Adding fees, taxes, dividends and withdrawals correctly

There is no special XIRR formula for an expense or a tax. Add the event as a dated cash flow with the investor-perspective sign and apply the same policy to both strategies. For example:

  • An account fee paid from the investor’s bank account is a negative cash flow on the fee date.
  • A fee deducted inside the portfolio reduces the portfolio value; if it is separately known and already reflected in the ending value, do not subtract it again.
  • A distribution received by the investor is a positive cash flow on the payment date. If it is reinvested, represent the reinvestment as a negative investment cash flow on its actual date, or state and apply a consistent net-treatment convention.
  • A withdrawal is a positive cash flow to the investor on the withdrawal date, while the remaining portfolio value is still the positive ending value.
  • A tax payment is negative when paid by the investor. If tax is withheld from a distribution, use the net amount received or model the gross distribution and tax as separate dated entries, consistently in both cases.

Do not mix a pre-fee SIP result with a post-fee lump-sum result and then attribute the difference to contribution timing.

How to interpret the two XIRR results

Compare the rates only after confirming that the underlying histories are equivalent on the controls above. A higher SIP XIRR means that the SIP’s specific dated outflows and ending value imply a higher annualized money-weighted rate than the lump-sum series you entered. It does not mean every SIP would outperform every lump sum, nor does it reveal how much money was gained without looking at contributions and ending values.

A rate is sensitive to the chosen measurement window. Moving the common valuation date can change both results, especially when the portfolios are volatile. The result also says nothing by itself about liquidity, emergency-cash needs, risk tolerance, ability to continue contributions or future market conditions. Those are separate planning decisions.

Report the inputs alongside the percentages: total contributed, each schedule’s dates, ending values, included costs and taxes, valuation date, spreadsheet function and any non-default guess. Without that context, two percentages can appear comparable while representing different cash-flow histories.

A reproducible reporting format

Use a short audit block next to the formulas or in the accompanying notes:

Fees and taxes Included or excluded under the stated rule Included or excluded under the same rule

Keeping this record makes the comparison repeatable when a statement is corrected, a valuation date changes or a fee is discovered. Save the underlying dated cash-flow rows rather than only the final percentages.

Practical decision framework after the calculation

Once the arithmetic is checked, use the result as one input rather than a verdict:

  1. Verify affordability: confirm that the chosen contribution schedule leaves adequate cash for obligations and emergencies.
  2. Check timing exposure: recognize that a lump sum puts the full amount at risk earlier, while a SIP leaves some money uninvested until later installments.
  3. Check consistency: decide whether you can maintain the scheduled installments and whether a lump sum would compromise other goals.
  4. Stress the measurement date: recalculate with clearly stated alternative end dates if the conclusion depends on one unusually strong or weak market point. Label each date; do not cherry-pick a window and present it as universal.
  5. Document assumptions: retain the dates, values, fees, taxes, currency and formula so another person can reproduce the result.

This process keeps the mathematical comparison separate from personal suitability. XIRR answers the dated-cash-flow question; it does not choose an investment strategy for you.

Key takeaways

  • Use XIRR when contributions occur on actual dates that are not necessarily equally spaced.
  • Enter every contribution as a negative outflow on its actual date and the ending portfolio value as a positive inflow on one common date.
  • Calculate SIP and lump-sum XIRRs separately; their cash-flow histories are not interchangeable.
  • Use the same total-amount definition, measurement period, valuation method and fee/tax treatment in both scenarios.
  • XIRR is an annualized rate implied by the supplied cash flows, based on a 365-day discounting convention; it is not a forecast or a measure of total currency gain by itself.
  • Investigate errors, implausible rates and multiple roots instead of accepting a spreadsheet output without checking its inputs.
