How to Compare SIF Returns, Risks, Fees and Investment Strategies Before Investing in India

In this guide, “SIF” means India’s SEBI-regulated Specialized Investment Fund. It is a regulatory category, not a single investment approach. Compare each fund’s strategy information document (SID), dated performance data, risk disclosures, costs and redemption rules before deciding whether it fits your objectives and time horizon. SEBI issued the SIF framework on February 27, 2025, and clarified it on April 9, 2025; SIF can mean something different in another jurisdiction.

If you are asking, “How do I compare SIF returns, risks, fees, and investment strategies before investing?”, the practical answer is to compare the mandate first and the return second. A headline number is meaningful only when you know what the strategy owned, which benchmark it used, which dates are covered and which costs were deducted.

What an SIF is—and why the name is not enough

A Specialized Investment Fund can pursue materially different exposures from another SIF. One strategy may be predominantly long equities, while another may use debt, arbitrage, derivatives or other permitted assets. The label therefore cannot tell you the likely sources of return or loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the current strategy information document from the asset-management company (AMC). Record its investment objective, eligible assets, permitted long and short positions, derivative use, benchmark, risk band and intended investor. For example, Franklin Templeton’s Sapphire Equity Long-Short SIF describes listed-equity exposure with limited derivative-based short exposure and names Nifty 500 TRI as its benchmark. That document is an illustration of what to inspect, not a recommendation or a ranking of Indian SIFs.

Also check the jurisdiction before making any comparison. SEBI’s Indian framework was issued on February 27, 2025, with a clarification on April 9, 2025. A fund called an SIF in another country may have different legal protections, eligible assets, tax treatment, minimums and dealing rules. Confirm that the AMC, regulator and disclosure you are reading are the ones that govern the investment you can actually buy.

A step-by-step SIF comparison process

  1. Define your decision. Write down the return objective, acceptable loss, investment horizon, liquidity needs and whether you can meet the minimum investment. A strategy that is unsuitable for a two-year cash need may be reasonable for a long-term allocation, regardless of its recent return.
  2. Collect comparable documents. Use the latest SID, scheme-related documents, factsheets and audited or otherwise formally disclosed performance information for every strategy you are considering. Note the document date and whether a figure is indicative, audited, gross or net of expenses.
  3. Build a side-by-side record. Capture the fields in the table below rather than relying on a fund name, presentation slide or one headline return.
  4. Match definitions before calculating. Use identical start and end dates, the same return convention and the benchmark stated by each strategy. Do not compare a since-inception annualized number with a one-year absolute return, or a gross return with a net return.
  5. Stress-test the fit. Consider what could happen in an equity sell-off, a rapid interest-rate change, a volatility spike, a derivative-market disruption or a period when you cannot redeem immediately.
  6. Verify current terms before subscribing. Thresholds, charges, portfolio limits and dealing arrangements can change. Confirm them in the latest strategy document and applicable SEBI material immediately before investing.
  7. Separate facts from assumptions. Mark every entry as a published term, a calculated result or your own assumption. If a figure is missing, write “not stated” and ask the AMC; do not infer it from a similarly named fund.
  8. Keep an evidence trail. Save the document title, issue date, page reference and the date you checked it. This makes it easier to identify a changed fee, benchmark or redemption clause when you review the investment later.

How to compare SIF returns fairly

Use matching periods and labels

For each strategy, record one-year, three-year and since-inception results when those periods exist, along with the exact dates. Label every result as trailing, annualized or absolute, and state whether it is net of expenses. Include the market conditions covered: a short history that begins in a rising market cannot show how the strategy behaves in a downturn.

Compare a strategy with its own stated benchmark, then compare the benchmark-relative result across funds only when the dates and calculation methods match. A return without those details is not a fair basis for choosing between SIFs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the benchmark named in the strategy document, not a convenient index selected after seeing the result. For the Sapphire Equity Long-Short example, the stated benchmark is Nifty 500 TRI. A total-return index includes the treatment of distributions differently from a price-only index, so substituting a different series can distort the comparison.

Do not treat a short track record as proof

Newer SIFs may have limited performance histories. Investor.gov’s guidance on nontraditional funds warns that limited history cannot establish that a strategy will outperform the market. There is no established cross-SIF average return, expected return or success rate in the available disclosures, so do not fill that gap with an estimate or a third-party ranking.

Ask how much of the reported history reflects the current mandate, team and risk limits. If the portfolio or strategy changed, a long series may combine unlike periods. Record the inception date and any stated change in objective or benchmark before drawing conclusions.

Separate performance from prediction

Past performance describes a particular portfolio, period and market environment. It does not promise future results. Ask what positions, hedges, leverage or market views produced the number and whether those conditions are likely to recur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look at more than the top-line return. Where the disclosure provides them, review drawdowns, losing periods, volatility and benchmark-relative performance. A strategy that delivered a high return by taking concentrated or derivative exposure may behave very differently from one that earned a similar return with diversified long positions. Do not manufacture metrics that the AMC has not disclosed.

Make the return calculation reproducible

Write down the beginning date, ending date, valuation convention and expense basis before calculating any difference. If one return is annualized and another is absolute, convert only when the underlying dates and method permit a valid conversion, and show the formula in your notes. Keep contributions, withdrawals and cash flows separate from portfolio performance.

When comparing a fund with its benchmark, identify whether both series are total-return measures and whether the fund number is net of expenses. A benchmark-relative gap may reflect fees, cash holdings, trading costs, hedges or a different exposure—not necessarily manager skill alone.

How to examine SIF risk beyond the published band

Read the risk band, then look through it

Record the strategy’s published risk band, but treat it as a starting point. Examine current and permitted holdings, issuer and sector concentration, liquidity of the underlying assets, currency or interest-rate sensitivity, and the possibility that exposures change quickly.

Ask whether the band is based on a standard methodology and when it was last updated. A label is not a substitute for reading the portfolio limits. Compare the worst plausible loss you can tolerate with the risks described in the SID, rather than assuming that two strategies with the same band have the same downside.

Understand short positions and derivatives

Short exposure can profit when a security or index falls, but losses can be large if it rises. Derivatives may require collateral, create counterparty exposure and produce gains or losses that are disproportionate to the cash initially committed. The reviewed SIF disclosure warns that derivative risks can differ from, or exceed, the risks of holding the underlying security directly. Ask how derivatives are used, the permitted limits, collateral arrangements and what happens if a position must be closed in stressed markets.

For a short position, ask whether the exposure is intended as a hedge or a source of return, how it is sized and what happens if the market rises sharply. For derivatives, identify the underlying asset, maturity or rollover process, collateral terms and counterparty arrangements disclosed by the strategy. A “limited” short allocation can still alter the timing and size of gains and losses.

Check concentration and liquidity risk

A portfolio with a few large positions can move more than a diversified benchmark. Less-liquid securities may be difficult to sell at a reasonable price, particularly when many investors seek redemptions at once. Read the strategy’s concentration limits and the circumstances in which dealing, valuation or redemptions may be restricted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review concentration by issuer, sector, instrument and theme where the documents provide those limits. Also consider operational concentration: a strategy dependent on a narrow derivative market or a small number of counterparties may face different risks from a broadly traded equity portfolio. Do not assume that daily valuation means the underlying assets can always be sold at that valuation.

How to compare fees and other charges

List every cost that applies to the exact strategy: recurring expense disclosures, management or operating expenses, entry or exit loads, transaction-related charges and any performance-linked fee described in the current documents. Record whether the quoted expense ratio is an ongoing figure, a cap, or a historical amount.

Costs come out of investor returns. As the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov guidance states: “Fees and expenses reduce the value of your investment return.” That is general investor education, not an Indian SIF-specific rule, but the comparison principle is the same.

Never compare one fund’s gross return with another fund’s net return. If a cost is not stated in a current strategy document, write “not stated” and obtain clarification from the AMC or distributor rather than substituting a third-party estimate.

Separate recurring costs from one-time charges. An exit load may matter more to an investor who may need to redeem early, while a recurring expense affects every period. Check the period covered by each quoted expense ratio and whether taxes or transaction expenses are treated separately. Do not assume a zero entry load means the investment is cost-free.

For a simple illustration, if two strategies report the same gross performance, the one with higher ongoing expenses will leave less for the investor, all else equal. The actual difference depends on the fee structure, portfolio turnover and holding period, so use the current disclosure rather than a generic percentage.

Minimum investment and operational rules

The Association of Mutual Funds in India’s 2026 strategy information document (S-21) states a minimum aggregate investment of INR 10 lakh across an investor’s SIF strategies, with an exception for accredited investors. This is a documented threshold, not a return statistic. Confirm the current threshold, how it is calculated, and any maintenance or top-up requirement for the particular SIF you are considering; do not assume every future document will use identical wording.

“Aggregate” matters. Ask whether the amount is measured across strategies in the same SIF, across an AMC, or under another definition in the current document. Confirm whether subsequent withdrawals can take you below the required level and what action follows. Accredited investors should verify the evidence or status required to use the exception.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same reviewed disclosure describes a 30-calendar-day rebalance notice after an active breach and says units may be frozen in the circumstances specified by the document. These are strategy-specific operational terms. Ask what event constitutes a breach, when the notice clock starts, what transactions are permitted during the period and how a freeze is lifted.

Do not treat the minimum as a recommendation to invest that amount. It is an eligibility and maintenance rule. Keep enough separate liquidity for taxes, emergencies and other goals so that a threshold breach does not force a poorly timed redemption.

Liquidity: match redemption rules to your cash needs

Read the dealing frequency, notice period, settlement timetable, exit loads, gates and exceptional-condition provisions. In the reviewed strategy disclosure, redemption proceeds are generally dispatched within three working days, subject to regulatory conditions and stated exceptions. The document also contemplates temporary restrictions in exceptional circumstances.

“Open-ended” does not mean that every investor can always receive the full value immediately. Market closures, valuation uncertainty, extraordinary volatility, regulatory directions or a strategy’s stated restrictions can delay or limit access. Keep an emergency reserve outside the SIF and do not invest money needed on a fixed near-term date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish the date on which you submit a valid request from the date on which money reaches your bank account. Check cut-off times, non-business days, required forms and whether an exit load applies. Ask how the strategy handles partial redemptions, pending subscriptions, valuation errors and exceptional restrictions.

Test liquidity against your real horizon. If you may need the money within a known period, allow for the notice and settlement timetable plus the possibility of a temporary restriction. A three-working-day general timetable is not a guarantee that every request in every market condition will settle on that schedule.

Comparison table to complete for each SIF

Field What to record Why it matters
Strategy and AMC Exact legal and strategy name; document date Prevents mixing similarly named products or outdated terms
Objective and exposure Assets, long and short limits, derivatives, concentration and liquidity limits Shows how returns and losses are generated
Benchmark Stated benchmark and methodology Provides the correct performance reference
Returns Identical periods; trailing, annualized or absolute; net or gross Makes figures comparable
Risk Published band plus derivative, leverage, concentration, counterparty and liquidity risks Reveals risks the label may not show
Costs Expense ratio, loads and other applicable charges, with their dates Shows the return you may actually receive
Minimum and thresholds Aggregate minimum, accredited-investor exception, maintenance and rebalance rules Determines eligibility and ongoing compliance
Redemption Dealing frequency, notice, settlement, exit loads and exceptional restrictions Tests whether liquidity matches your horizon

If a current value is unavailable, enter “not stated” with the source document and date. Do not use a guess to make the table look complete.

Add a final column for the date checked and another for questions outstanding. This prevents a current fee from being mistaken for an older one and makes unresolved issues visible before you invest. For a multi-strategy allocation, record each strategy separately even when the AMC is the same.

How strategy type changes the comparison

Long-equity strategies

For a primarily long-equity SIF, compare sector and issuer concentration, cash levels, turnover, benchmark overlap and drawdowns against the stated equity index. A high return may simply reflect a concentrated exposure to a strong sector.

Check whether the portfolio is intended to stay substantially invested or can hold meaningful cash. Compare the stated objective with the actual holdings disclosed at the same date. A benchmark comparison is most useful when the strategy’s investable universe and risk limits are clear.

Long-short or derivative-using strategies

For a long-short strategy, identify the gross long exposure, net exposure, short instruments, hedge ratio, collateral and derivative limits. A low net exposure does not mean low risk: gross positions, basis risk, financing costs and short squeezes can all affect results.

Ask how often the hedge is rebalanced and whether the short exposure is discretionary or rule-based, if the document states this. Compare both legs of the portfolio, not only the net number. A strategy can have a modest net market exposure while still carrying substantial position, financing and counterparty risks.

Strategies with less-liquid assets

For strategies investing in less-liquid securities, focus on valuation frequency, pricing methodology, redemption gates and the time required to sell assets. Reported volatility can look low when prices are infrequently observed; that does not guarantee stable realizable value.

Questions to send the AMC before investing

  • What are the current permitted long, short and derivative exposures, and where are their limits stated?
  • Is each performance figure gross or net of expenses, and what exact dates and benchmark series were used?
  • Which recurring expenses, loads, transaction costs and performance-linked charges apply to my investment?
  • How is the INR 10 lakh aggregate minimum calculated, and what maintenance or top-up rule applies?
  • What event triggers the 30-calendar-day rebalance notice, and can units be frozen during that process?
  • What are the normal notice, settlement and cut-off rules for redemption?
  • Which exceptional conditions can delay, restrict or suspend dealing?
  • When was the SID last updated, and has the mandate or benchmark changed?

Request written answers or a pointer to the exact current document section. A verbal explanation that is not reflected in the governing disclosure should not replace the disclosure.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing the highest recent return: Replace the ranking with matched periods, benchmark-relative results and drawdown analysis.
  • Ignoring the mandate: Read permitted exposures and actual holdings before comparing performance.
  • Mixing gross and net figures: Put the expense basis beside every return.
  • Assuming the risk band is sufficient: Inspect derivatives, concentration, liquidity and counterparty disclosures.
  • Overlooking threshold rules: Confirm the INR 10 lakh aggregate rule, accredited-investor exception and any maintenance conditions in the current document.
  • Planning on immediate access: Read notice, settlement, load and exceptional-restriction clauses and keep separate emergency cash.
  • Using stale documents: Check the issue date and obtain the latest SEBI and AMC disclosures before subscribing.
  • Comparing unlike benchmarks: Do not treat a price index, total-return index and custom benchmark as interchangeable.
  • Filling missing data with estimates: Mark the field “not stated” and ask the AMC instead of importing an unverified number.
  • Confusing a category with diversification: Holding several SIFs does not automatically diversify you if their assets, sectors or hedges overlap.

A practical decision test before investing

  1. Can you explain in one paragraph what the strategy owns, shorts or hedges and how it seeks returns?
  2. Can you show that every return comparison uses matching dates, benchmark definitions and net-or-gross treatment?
  3. Can you tolerate the documented downside, including derivative-related losses and concentration risk?
  4. Can you pay the minimum and remain compliant with the strategy’s threshold rules?
  5. Can you leave the money invested through the stated notice, settlement and exceptional-restriction periods?
  6. Have you verified all current fees and charges rather than relying on a presentation or estimate?
  7. Have you checked that the strategy’s actual and permitted exposures fit your overall portfolio?
  8. Do you know which document and date you will use for your next review?

If any answer is no, pause and obtain clarification from the AMC and a qualified adviser. A SIF should be evaluated as a specific strategy with specific documents, not as a generic product category. Use the latest SEBI material and the exact AMC strategy information document for the final decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does SIF mean in this article?

It means India’s SEBI-regulated Specialized Investment Fund. The abbreviation can describe other structures elsewhere, so verify the jurisdiction and regulator for the product you are considering.

Is INR 10 lakh the minimum for every SIF investor?

The Association of Mutual Funds in India’s 2026 strategy information document S-21 states a minimum aggregate investment of INR 10 lakh across an investor’s SIF strategies, with an exception for accredited investors. Confirm the current threshold, calculation and maintenance rules in the exact strategy document.

Can I compare two SIFs by their one-year returns?

Only if the dates, return convention, benchmark and gross-or-net expense basis match. A one-year figure alone does not show how either strategy behaves across different market conditions.

Does an open-ended SIF guarantee quick access to my money?

No. Check dealing frequency, notice, cut-off times, settlement, exit loads and exceptional restrictions. The reviewed strategy disclosure generally describes dispatch within three working days, subject to regulatory conditions and exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are derivatives important in an SIF comparison?

Derivatives can create collateral, counterparty and disproportionate-loss risks. The strategy disclosure warns that derivative risks can differ from or exceed those of holding the underlying security directly.

What should I do if a fee or return figure is missing?

Record it as “not stated,” note the current document and date, and ask the AMC or distributor for clarification. Do not substitute a third-party estimate.

Does a lower-risk label mean an SIF cannot lose substantially?

No. The published band is only a starting point. Examine concentration, liquidity, short positions, derivatives, counterparty exposure and the potential for rapidly changing exposures.

Is there a reliable average return for Indian SIFs?

No comparable cross-SIF average, expected return or success rate is established here. Returns vary by strategy and measurement period, so use dated, strategy-level disclosures instead of an invented average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Compare the mandate before the marketing, and the net, benchmark-matched return before the headline number. Check the current SID for exposures, derivatives, risks, fees, the INR 10 lakh aggregate rule and redemption restrictions. If the dates, definitions or costs do not match, the comparison is not ready—and neither is the investment decision.
